1.0 BACKGROUND

Alhamdulillah, Praise be to Allah finally we manage to complete the group assignment/ technical
report that have been given by our lecturer, MR ROHAIZAD HAFIDZ B ROZALI for the
Subject Shipbuilding Technology For Economic Production (LDD 22102) Group L03.For this
assignment, we were required to do a research on the Computer-Base Tool in UNIVERSITI
KUALA LUMPUR MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF MARINE ENGINEERING
TECHNOLOGY (UniKL MIMET). The lecturer we referred to is Mr. Syed Khairul Sani Bin
Syed Wazar as being our lecturer by teaching us about Lines Plan and how to use a Maxsurft
Software. We have been faced many challenges and difficulties throughout doing this
assignment . For instances, we have gain a lot of knowledge that we had never knew before from
this assignment. Me myself Amnan Mussani Bin Musaluddin doing this assignment with my
group mate that is Khairul Syazwan Bin Khairuddin.

2.0 INTRODUCTION
In this modern day the computer modern technology many things are done by computer and
internet. A counterpoint to the aging problem is that young workers are more oriented toward the
use of computers in their daily work and are often more willing and capable to use
CAD/CAM/CIM in ship design and construction than older workers accustomed to little or no
use of computers. In this assignment we must Identify Computer-Aided Design (CAD),
Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software that
are been using by the students at UniKL MIMET.Explain the relevant using all software above to
them and suggest other softwares can be used by student at UniKL MIMET.

3.0 SCOPE OF THIS COMPUTER-BASE TOOL

3.1) Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is a direct outgrowth of the traditional drafting board
approach to ship design. CAD depicts geometry and dimensions on a computer monitor
and not directly on paper, though an important output of CAD is still paper drawings.
Sophisticated CAD systems are much more powerful than computer versions of drafting
boards. They may have extensive parts libraries, cut-and-paste capabilities, and efficient,
menu-driven user interfaces.
Stand-alone CAD is most appropriate for relatively simple designs such as those
developed in the smaller shipyards. For more complex designs, CAE and product model
programs are more appropriate.
3.2) Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE)
Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) automates various ship design calculations in the
areas of hull and equipment. While the more typical CAE programs specialize in specific
areas, such as ship structure, some are modules of more integrated ship design programs
and represent an evolutionary link to product model programs.
3.3) Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) programs help bridge the gap between ship
design and construction. CAM programs develop data for use in areas such as welding,
cutting, lifting, bending, forming, planning, and monitoring.

4.0 COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN (CAD)

1. Autocad
AutoCAD package is suitable for accurate and prefect drawing of engineering designs. The
drawing of machine parts, isometric views and assembly drawings are possible in Auto-CAD.
This package is suitable for 2 D & 3 D drawings.
2. Inventor
It is a 3D mechanical engineering, design, visualization, and simulation software. Autodesk
inventor is a parametric and feature-based solid modeling tool. It allows you to convert the basic
2D sketch into a solid model using very simple modeling options. It allows the user to create life
like 3D models and then use certain features in order to create an overall assembly. Autodesk
Inventor is a great tool to implement during the design phase because now you can see what is
happening in a life like way without waiting to see and re-design once fabrication has already
begun.

3. Maxsurf
The Maxsurf suites of software offer a comprehensive range of capabilities for the design of all
types of marine vessels. Providing naval architects with a complete range of software tools for all
phases of the design process. Maxsurf includes tools for hull modeling, stability, motions and
resistance prediction, structural modeling, structural analysis, and export to vessel detailing.
Maxsurf software applications operate from a single parametric 3D model that facilitates smooth
communication and coordination between different team members and design activities.

4. Solidwork
SolidWorks is a 3D solid modeling package which allows users to develop full solid models in a
simulated environment for both design and analysis. In SolidWorks, you sketch ideas and
experiment with different designs to create 3D models. Designing in a modeling package such as
SolidWorks is beneficial because it saves time, effort, and money that would otherwise be spent
prototyping the design.

NX
NX is the commercial CAD/CAM/CAE PLM software suite developed by Siemens PLM
Software. NX is widely used in the engineering industry, especially in the automotive and
aerospace sectors.NX was originally called Unigraphics. In 2001, Unigraphics was combined
with SDRC's I-DEAS CAD product. The gradual addition of I-DEAS functionality into the
Unigraphics code base was the basis for the current NX product line.NX is commonly referred to
as a 3D PLM software application. The product supports all stages of product development from
conceptualization (CAID), to design (CAD), to analysis (CAE), to manufacturing (CAM). NX
integrates these product lifecycle stages into an end-to-end process using concurrent engineering
workflow, design-in-context and product data management tools that apply across all functional
areas.
