Dwelling vs.

Delivery
Dwelling: John 14:15-17 – Read through.
Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit will be with us forever. This is described as God dwelling with us and in us.

What comes with His dwelling?


1) Counsel –
i) Teach us all things (John 14:26)
ii) Remind us of what Jesus has said (John 14:26)
iii) Convict us of our guilt (John 16:8-11) –
(a) In regard to sin, righteousness and judgment –
1. Sin: Rejecting the sovereignty of Jesus (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9)
2. Righteousness: Must have faith in Jesus (Romans 1:17)
3. Judgment: Judged by Jesus’ standard (2 Corinthians 5:10)
iv) Remove deception (John 16:13)
v) Knowledge of the future (John 16:13)
2) Testimony –
i) The Gospel of Jesus (John 15:26)
ii) Cause us to glorify Jesus (John 16:14)
3) Lifestyle –
i) He gives us these characteristics (Galatians 5:22-23)
(a) Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control*

4) Intercession –
i) Helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27)

Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit comes as a baptism. This is described as a gift from the Father.

What comes with His gift?


1) Common good –
i) Message of wisdom (1 Corinthians 12:8)
(a) God’s will and path for your life and others (Jeremiah 29:11, Isaiah 30:21)
ii) Message of knowledge (1 Corinthians 12:8)
(a) Facts about others, thoughts of others or God (John 4:15-18, 39; Matthew 9:4; 1 Cor. 2:11)
iii) Faith (1 Corinthians 12:9)
(a) Faith to be healed; different from righteous faith and faithfulness* (Mark 5:21-34)
(*we will discuss these differences in the next lesson on His fruits)
iv) Gifts of healing (1 Corinthians 12:9)
(a) Plural, indicating multiple ways to heal (John 9:1-7, Mark 8:22-25, Mark 10:46-52)
v) Miraculous powers (1 Corinthians 12:10)
(a) Separate from healing; anything that brings glory to Jesus (2 Kings 4:1-7, 6:1-7)
vi) Prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:10)
(a) Used for strengthening, encouragement and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3)
vii) Distinguishing between spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10)
(a) Able to recognize the Spirit of God vs. all others (1 Kings 22:1-14, 1 John 4:1-3)
viii) Speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 12:10)
