Background

ways. To this network will be integrated the

rail link between CKS International Airport
and Taipei, and the Taipei Circle Line.

Capital of Taiwan with more than 5 million

inhabitants for the metropolitan area, Taipei
City started planning its metro network in the
1970s, the construction in 1980s and progressively the revenue services in 1990s.
Nowadays, the 1st stage network is totally
completed and put into revenue service. This
first metro network of 69 km includes 6 lines
and 64 stations, with a daily passenger flow
of about 1 million.
A 2nd stage network has been approved by
the Central Government and is now under
construction. Including 7 lines and 57 stations, the second stage will add up 70 km rail-

The Neihu Line

In 1996, the first line of the Taipei metro
network to be put into commercial operation
is the Mucha Line (Brown Line), an elevated
Medium Capacity Transit system (VAL). As part
of the 2nd stage network, the Neihu Line is an
extension of the Mucha Line.
The Neihu Line starts north from the existing
elevated terminal station BR2. The line then
goes down into tunnel to the Sungshan
domestic airport with BR1 station, it turns
north under the airport and Keelung River
and re-emerges after B1 station. The Neihu
Line continues east by viaducts crossing Neihu
District to reach the terminal and depot
in Nankang. There a connection is made to
Nankang Line.
The system definition, as well as the design of
the civil works, track and depot have been
carried out between 1999 and 2002. The construction has started in 2003. The revenue
service is scheduled to begin in June 2008.

Stations

Mucha Line

The Neihu Line includes 12 stations, of which

2 are underground and 10 elevated. Added to
this is a maintenance depot.

Infrastructure

Dec. 2005

The total length of Neihu Line is about 15 km,

including 4 km under tunnel and 11 km on
viaduct.

Taiwan

Taipei Neihu Line

For the first time in Taiwan, the Department

of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) have adopted the U Shape viaduct. This design was
developed and proposed by SYSTRA as an
optimised solution to elevated metro systems.

Superstructure
The tracks consist of steel running surface.
Neihu Line will be fully compatible with the
existing VAL system of Mucha Line, using
rubber tired driverless AGT technology with a
minimum headways of 72 seconds.

SYSTRAs Role
SYSTRA has already been deeply involved in
the Mucha Line at the beginning of 1990s. At
the time, SYSTRA carried out the coordination
between E&M systems and civil works and
ensured the training of operation and maintenance staff of the line.
Within the frame of Neihu Line, SYSTRA has
taken the role of Special Design Consultant
for the local designers, which are: China Engineering Consultants Inc. (CECI), Resources
Engineering Services Inc. (RESI), Moh and
Associates (MAA), of the Department of Rapid
Transit System (DORTS) of Taipei Municipal
Government. SYSTRA performed the following services:

System-wide assistance, including:

- definition of the system-wide requirements and interfaces between systems and
civil works,
- power supply simulation of the whole
line,
- noise & vibration studies and recommendations to mitigation solutions.
Viaduct design
Compared to the traditional box girder viaduct, the U Shape viaduct is an optimised
solution to elevated metro systems, which
allows reducing significantly the visual impact
to urban environment, as well as the costduration ratio.
To improve the construction quality and
speed, the typical U shape spans as well as
the pier caps are fully pre-cast.
Within this project, SYSTRA has performed:
- basic and detail design of the typical sections of U Shape viaducts,
- architectural design of the typical U
shape structures (superstructures and substructures),
- design assistance for special bridges,
- detail design review.
Running surface design, including:
- functional specifications,
- basic Design.
Depot design
- general layout and basic design,
- detail design review.

One of the key issues of this project is to minimize the mass of the structures, for a better
insertion of the line in the dense urban area
and to reduce the environmental impacts.
