and service was extended to cover Kuala Lumpur in September 1992. In that year, Hospis Malaysia had 44

a leased land at Taman Sri Bahtera, Cheras. A full time CEO/Medical Director was appointed in June 1997 in
view of the increasing clinical activities. The following years saw Hospis Malaysia's steady growth in the field of
Palliative Care. More volunteers began joining Hospis Malaysia which enabled the clinical team to expand its
service to visit more patients and to cover more areas. The experience that the clinical team was obtaining
created a potential for Hospis Malaysia to confidently set out into Palliative Care training and education. The first
Pallative Care lecture by Hospis Malaysia was in 1997 for a group of medical undergraduates from Universiti
Malaya. With the completion and launch of its building in 1998, the idea of starting Professional Palliative Care
workshops for doctors and nurses became feasible. Hence, in 1999, Hospis Malaysia ran its first Palliative Care
Foundation workshop. Where operations and governance were concerned, noteworthy changes that took place
were the commencement of its Day Care activities in 2000, and the reshuffling of Council which their previous
Chairman, the late Dato Francis Huang, taking over from Dato Dr. Peter Mooney in 2001. In the year 2015, the
newest CEO is Dr. Ednin Hamzah who joined the Council in 1997. He graduated in Medicine from the University
of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom in 1986. He was trained in General Medicine and General Practice
and worked as a General Practitioner in Newcastle Upon Tyne until 1997, when he joined Hospis Malaysia. He
is currently also on the Board of International Association of Hospice and Palliative Care, the Asia Pacific
Hospice Palliative Care Association, the Malaysian Oncological Society and the Malaysian Society for the Study
of Pain. In 2002, Hospis Malaysia expanded its training capacity by offering more Palliative Care programs in
collaboration with the Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network (APHN), thus placing itself more firmly in the
local and international Palliative Care circle as a recognised Palliative Care service and training provider . Since
the time it began, Hospis Malaysia has attended to thousands of patients in Klang Valley, and has recorded
immense growth, both in its capacity as a professional Palliative Care provider, and in its staff strength. From its
simple beginnings with one nurse and two volunteer doctors, Hospis Malaysia has since grown into the largest
hospice in Malaysia in terms of the number of patients it accepts each year, and which has a full-time Palliative
Care team comprising fourteen nurses, four doctors, a pharmacist, and an occupational therapist. Hospis

The objectives of Hospis Malaysia as one of the non-profit oriented organization in Malaysia is to provide more
open contributions in the society and also providing ultimate leads of donations for the organization as well as
proposing excellent marketing strategies with justification to the organization.
As for the vision of the company, it is to provide the highest quality of Palliative Care so as to provide relief
from, and prevent pain and suffering associated with progressive and life-limiting illnesses.
And the mission of the company is, its best to provide the best possible Palliative Care services to our
community based on their needs, and the human and financial resources available to us. Besides that, it is to
assist in training and education of health professionals in the necessary skills of Palliative Care to provide relief
of suffering that affects patients and their families. Moreover, the last mission is to increase the awareness of the
needs of those with progressive and life threatening illnesses. Lastly, to value life and promote quality of life for
all our patients regardless of illness or stage through advocacy, education and research.

Organizational Structure
Hospis Malaysia comprises three core departments Clinical, Public Relations and Finance and Administration.
On the clinical side, there are four doctors, seventeen nurses, a pharmacist, and an occupational therapist who
work closely with the volunteers to care for patients, and are closely supervised by the CEO/Medical Director.
The management of Hospis Malaysia strongly encourages the growth and development of its clinical staffs, and
as such they are constantly exposed to training and dialogue sessions.
Not affiliated with any political, religious, governmental or private groups, Hospis Malaysia depends entirely on
individual and corporate support as its' source of funds. Besides donations received, the numerous fundraising
events organised by Hospis Malaysia ensure a steady stream of fund inflow to enable continuous and effective
running of the hospice. Funds received are managed by a team of council members who act, on a voluntary
basis, as trustees of Hospis Malaysias funds while full time staff, headed by the CEO/Medical Director, handle
the operational aspects of the hospice.
This recognition is the result of of its committed involvement in major international Palliative Care developments,
and its close working relationship with the Ministry of Health Malaysia, universities and clinical partners. Hospis
Malaysia's track record as a committed Palliative Care education and training provider in the country, backed-up
by its strong international teaching faculty, has also further reinforced its position in the field of Palliative Care,
both locally and internationally.
Hospis Malaysia also has affiliations with notable international Palliative Care networks which complement and
support its role as a recognised Palliative Care training and education provider in the country. One such
collaboration is with the Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network (APHN). Dedicated to promoting hospice
and Palliative Care in Asia and the Pacific, APHN acts as a bridge that links all its members who are interested
in developing hospice and Palliative Care programs in the Asia Pacific region. We are also collaborate with the
International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), to focus on advancing palliative care
programs, education, research and policies to improve the care provided to our patients.

Sample of projects done in the past and their past achievements

Hospis Malaysia is helping those in need, especially Palliative Care for patients who suffer from blocking
life. The services offered are free. The Centre did not choose or distinguish the type of sex, religion, race and
politics. The purpose of this center was established to help patients undergoing treatment, and finding effective
solutions for the needs of patients. Hospis Malaysia interdisciplinary team is comprised of an integrated group of
clinical staff working together to help patients who need treatment services. The center is always thinking of
something better to improve the quality of services provided, and always put the needs and circumstances of
the patient. There is a total of nine nurses and four doctors will make a trip of about 600-700 home visits each
month. This visit is not being conducted in homes but also in the hospital and a medical treatment. In 2005,
patients referred to Hospis Malaysia are around 950 of them then increased in 2006, total patients referred to
this center are 1183. The majority of patients referred to Hospis Malaysia are those who are suffering from
cancer as lung cancer, breast and colorectal cancers. Most patients who are referred to Hospis Malaysia usually
make an assessment within 48 hours after receipt of order. Assessment was made in the context of physical
symptoms, emotional problems and psychological problems.

At this point, Hospis Malaysia has made The Day Care Centre, where patients and family members can join this
Day Care Centre. It is open on Tuesday and Thursday and is open only to patients who are registered under
Hospis Malaysia. It is intended to prevent the patient feeling tired in their daily activities. In this way, patients can
be free from a situation of boredom and loneliness. With the existence of The Day Care Centre, the patients can
interact and know each other. Conditions in a medical situation that is often associated with the tedious, so
Hospis Malaysia would like to deny these opinions, having The Day Care Centre. The Day Care Centre also
offers a number of activities such as seeing a few symptoms that are likely to be available by the
patient. Whether symptoms are harmful to the existing disease occur or not. In addition, The Day Care Centre
also shows how the medical and personal care for the way the disease can be well controlled.

Internal Strength is to provide high quality treatment for free and Hospis Malaysia is not affiliated with any
religious, political, public or private and does not distinguish anything. High quality of awareness are also one of

them and good quality image in Malaysia and International or even Globally. The location of Hospis Malaysia is
at Taman Sri Bahtera, Cheras which has high level of expertise, professionalism and experience of the nurses,
doctors and volunteers. The flexibility of times patients can get treatment with specific needs in Hospis Malaysia
as said in numerous articles and websites.
The internal weakness is the organization's funds, equipments and facilities that are strongly depend on
contributions and donations of the generous public and sponsorship. There isnt enough space to provide better
service for the patients who are in need.
The external opportunities is to increase the market opportunities and the free service treatment for the people.
Next is the opportunity for geographic expansion, the opportunity to introduce, train and educate more people to
familiarize them about basic concept of palliative care.
The external threats are people that do not care about the charity organization and besides that some donators
and contributors no longer donate and contribute anymore due to personal and unreasonable issues.

Conclusion

In summary, Hospis Malaysia is work on charity business that helps patients with high quality services for free.
As charity organization, Hospis Malaysia is strongly depending on donations and contributions from people or
other organizations. In order to increase their increase their quality and capability to help people, Hospis
Malaysia trying to expand their business with constructed a new building that are purposed on increasing in
educational activities and initiatives for organization.
