Realencyclopaedie der Classichen Altertumswissenschaften
Long history of publishments, first volume was published in 1894.
The work is a revision of the Paulischen Real-Encyclopaedia der Klassischen Altertumswissenschaft. It does list all the scholars who contributed to the work in the preliminaries, but doesnt list who is responsible for individual entries, which is a pity. If you want to know, you will have to dig through a list of 119 contributors to find the one who potentially wrote the entry youre reading. Note Theres a separate book called index, published in 1980 with a complete index, and a guide on how to use the work. 1100 mitarbeiter aus vielen Disziplinen. In total bestaat het uit 34 delen, dat is inclusief supplementen. In the book called index theres also a guide on how to use the work. The supplements contain digressions, further explanations on certain themes that cannot be discussed in the actual entry due to space constraints. It does give a list of abbreviations. It does refer to primary literature. Looked at an article about Aphrodite. The articles are subdivided in different passages, numbered by the letters of the Alphabet. A is Cultus, and under that header it lists the specifics of the cult based on region, lists all regional variations, its very meticulous in that. It does assume you read Greek and Latin though, it sometimes offers a translation of either languages, but most of the time it does not. D ( cant find B and C ) is epithets, E is relations with other gods, F is literature, but the funny thing is that it doesnt go into the role of Aphrodite in literature, but rather points out secondary literature to use, due to space constraints. G Aphrodite in Kunst. Does not use footnotes, but uses in text notes, which is a tad annoying.
List of subjects -
Geographie und Topographie.
Geschichte und Prosographie Literaturgeschischte Antiquitaeten Mythologie und Kultus not complete, leaves out Mesopotamian deities and cults. Archaeologie und Kunstgeschichte
Cons -
Its very old
Its entirely written in German Follows the original spelling of Greek names. Youll be searching for a very long time if youre looking for Thucydides rather than Thoukudides. Gosh its dense. Its got no inventory list. Yeah it does, its a separate volume, published in 1980.
Pros -
It does cover a very wide range of subjects
Der Neue Pauly

Intended as a practical reference for everyday use, according to the
preface. German version from 1997, English version in 2002, first tome. Divides itself into two parts, Antiquity and classical reception ( Five tomes for that last part ). Also, there is an online reference. In time it focusses on the mid. Second millennium BC to 600-800 AD. Oh goody, its helpful, it gives transliterations of other alphabets, Greek, Hebrew, Arabian/Persian and Turkish. A very extensive list of abbreviations, the most extensive one Ive seen, covering general abbreviations, bibliographic abbreviations, abbreviations of ancient authors and titles of works, list of maps, list of illustrations and a list of authors. Lets use the same article as the last time and have a look at Aphrodite again. Instead of having to look at the entire article to find out what the Focusses on the Greek and Roman world. In a way its a continuation of the old, oooollllld one. It gives a list of subjects and the entries that belong to that subject. Subjects are political history, Historiography, Epigraphy, Cultural history and everyday culture, Eductation, Phases of life, leisure and festivals, nutrition and table culture, sports, environment, law, military. I could list them all, but that would take a long time. For our convenience, a lot more subjects are listed and they are a lot more specific than any in the Realenceclopaedie. It has a list of places and where they are geographically. Overall, its very complete and it would take me far too long to list all the things that are in the indexbook alone, seeing as its got at least 600 pages. These are very general, but they do get far more specific, more subdivisions. I have done some crossreferencing for you, and as far as I can see the entries on the German version, the English version and the online version are all identical. Theres a lot less information in these entries about Aphrodite than there was in the Realenceclopedie, but the information that is there is far more readable and far more usable. In the realencyclopaedie one has to wade through endless references and abbreviations to get to the actual text. Also, Der Neue Pauly lists bibliographical details of
secondary literature directly under every entry, so it points people in the
direction of where to get certain information. It doesnt assume active knowledge of ancient languages, and will give transliterations when Greek or Latin is used and translations.
