registered in Bath in May 1932. The chassis is in very good order and the
engine is running well after recent work and a new battery has just been
fitted. The body is sound but of scruffy appearance. The interior has that
well worn look. In ideal condition to drive around as it is and lots of fun.

182 A 1962 Triumph Vitesse
Mark I 1600 saloon, registration
number 616 XUX, chassis
number HB1342DL, engine
number HB1434HE, blue with
white flash. The Herald family
was launched in 1959 with a
948cc engine which was
available in saloon and
convertible designs, with coupé
and estate versions to follow.
Triumph continued to improve
the Herald range to cater for all
tastes, but it was evident from the
earliest days that the car was no
ball of fire, so in 1962 a re-
engineered version called the
Vitesse 1600 was introduced.
Lot 182 The main distinguishing features
of the new model were the new
straight six overhead valve engine, restyled front end with twin head
lamps which were angled seductively giving the new model an easily
identifiable look from the previous models. The Vitesse offered here is a
saloon from the first year of production. It is fitted with a Webasto style
sunroof, blue vinyl interior and the desirable four speed with overdrive
gearbox. This Vitesse has been part of a large private collection in recent
years and has been dry stored in that time and used sparingly. V5C, MOT
to November 2010, tax exempt See illustrations £1500 - 1800

183 A 1977 Triumph Spitfire

1500, registration number RAR
117R, chassis number FH86767,
engine number FMHE, white.
The Spitfire 4 (Mk 1) was
introduced in 1962 at a cost of
£641.00, based on the Herald
running gear and as a direct
competitor to the Austin Healy
Sprite and MG Midget.
Throughout its production run
the Spitfire models always out sold the Sprite and Midget range of cars.
The Spitfire went through Mk 2, Mk 3 and Mk 4 versions with the 1300cc
engine. The final Spitfire had the new 1500cc engine, which gave the little
sports car a true 100 mph top speed. The 1500 went through some detailed
changes during its production run. The main visual ones being the chrome
door handles, wing mirrors and windscreen wipers being replaced for
matte black items in 1976. In 1977 the Spitfire received TR7 column
Lot 183
stalks and the upholstery changed from all vinyl to houndstooth vinyl and
cloth. This Spitfire 1500 has received some minor power and cosmetic
improvements from standard specification. These include a stainless steel
sport exhaust, high lift sports camshaft, double duck hood and chrome
carburettor dash pots. It also has the desirable four speed overdrive gear
box. The history file has five old MOT’s. The car has been part of a large
private collection and has been used sparingly in recent years. V5C, MOT
to March 2010, tax to be confirmed See illustrations £1500 - 1700

having full dove grey leather and walnut interior, navy blue electric hood
(recently replaced), electric windows, mirrors, driver’s airbag, JVC CD
player with bluetooth and iPod dock, and other luxury equipment. The
vendor informs us that
the car has been

standard and has recently
had new discs, pads and
suspension fitted

Lot 185

189 The historically
significant one millionth
Morris Minor 1000 saloon,
registration number
1 MHU, chassis number
M-A2S3/1000000, engine
number 503889, originally
9M-U-H/504066, lilac. The
millionth Morris Minor
rolled off the No 1
assembly line at the giant
Cowley Works on the 22nd
December 1960. Its
designer Alec Issigonis was
there with other Nuffield
organisation top brass to
savour the success of a car
which had captured the
hearts of the British public.
The publicity department
Lot 189 played their part, issuing a
press release on 4th
January 1961 entitled The
Morris Minor Million - a Great Engineering and Commercial
Achievement, which went on to tell of the feat unique in the history of the
British Motoring Industry i.e. the production of one million vehicles of a
common design - the greatest British-made seller in any class. The
Millionth Minor, one of 349 Specials produced, 318 were sold on the UK
home market, 31 left-hand drive models were exported to North America
and 9 to Europe. Based on a standard 1961 2-door saloon, the Millionth
Specials were painted in eye-catching lilac. They received a luxurious
white leather interior with black piping, white door cards, black carpets
and grey sun visors, externally they bore extra chrome rings on the wheel
trims and unique 1,000,000 badgeing. The actual Millionth Minor was
passed from the Nuffield Group publicity department to the National
Union of Journalists on the 20th April 1961 for use in a National fund
raising campaign in aid of the British Red Cross, and was subsequently
raffled on National television. The lucky winner was a Miss Susan George
from Wales, who was too young to drive at the time and it was
subsequently sold to the local postman. The Millionth Minor came to the
attention of the current owner in 1970 when visiting his holiday home in
Dyfed Wales, still going strong, although now painted red. In 1971 the car
was involved in an accident when it slid into a ditch damaging the driver’s
side. The current owner purchased the car soon after the accident and
trailered it back to his Birmingham home. Two further house moves and
two decades passed before restoration took place at Northbrook College
in Worthing, where it received a full restoration by Derek Smith, a Senior
Lecturer in Motor Vehicle Studies. There is a vast history file with the car
within five document wallets containing receipts totalling approximately
£15,000 for the restoration, various magazine and newspaper articles
relating to the car, photographs of the rebuild, Heritage Certificate and old
MOT’s. The car has been dry stored in recent years due to pressure of
work and has only covered a nominal mileage since the restoration. This
is a unique opportunity to purchase an historically significant vehicle and
a small piece of the British motoring history. RF60, V5, no current MOT,
currently on SORN See illustrations £18000 - 22000

190 A 1972 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Mk 1, registration number
HOU 999L, chassis number SRH13625, engine number 13625, Sand over
Astrakhan. The Silver Shadow was launched in October 1965 and had the
all new monocoque body and a V8 engine first seen in the Silver Cloud II.
This Silver Shadow comes direct from a large private collection and has
been stored in a car-coon. The history file contains the original build
sheets and car specification which shows that it had some specially
ordered fitments. These included plain Sundym glass, automatic speed
control, Marshall Quartz Iodine headlamps and white wall radial tyres.
There is the original bill of sale from Mann Egerton and Co Ltd, London
Road, Derby for £8734.93, service bills and seventeen MOT’s including
the current MOT to substantiate the 52,450 recorded miles. This is a very
well maintained and low mileage Silver Shadow which is a cut above the
average car, and deserves a new caring owner. V5C, V5, MOT to August
2010, tax exempt See illustrations £6500 - 7500

Lot 190

191 A 1948 Rolls Royce HJ Mulliner Sedanca de Ville, registration
Number KXN 617, chassis number WCB55, engine number W183B,
black over maroon. KXN 617 was first registered to the Honorable Mrs
Elizabeth Stockdale in August 1948. The current custodian of KXN 617
purchased the car from Jack Barclay Ltd in 1979. He has maintained
KXN 617 to a very high standard over the last 31 years with maintenance
carried out by various specialists including Jack Barclay Service Ltd and
Hoffmans of Henley. KXN 617 is exquisitely appointed with full leather
interior, the rear passenger compartment is finished in maroon leather, has
twin writing tables, two occasional seats, period radio, clock, rear window
blinds, armrest mounted ashtrays and electrically operated glass division.
The drivers cabin is finished in black leather and has complete under
dashboard tool kit. The boot still has the rare tool kit and original foot
pump. KXN 617 has recently been fitted with a stainless steel exhaust and
new tyres. This rare Sedanca De Ville is used on a regular basis and will
be driven to the sale. The history file contains various maintenance
receipts. V5C, MOT to August 2010, tax exempt See illustrations

192 A 1969 Mercedes Benz 280SL (W113) Pagoda, registration
number EHJ 298H, chassis number 11304422012282, engine number
13098322067730, metallic blue. The W113 series of Mercedes sports
cars were produced between 1963 - 1971 with the 230SL model, the
250SL which was produced for just one year and finally the 280SL. All
models were fitted with a straight six engine with Bosch multi point fuel
injection. The Pagoda name came from the shape of the hard top which
was dished in the centre with high flanks resembling the shape of a
Japanese pagoda roof. The W113 cars were fitted with a fully retractable
soft top, which sat underneath a metal tonneau cover, and when the hard
top is fitted it gives the impression that it is a full fixed head coupe. The
280SL offered here is an automatic model with works hard top and soft
top, and blue MB-tex interior. This SL formed part of a private collection
and has been dry stored in a car-coon for a number of years. It will now
require recommissioning before going back into regular road use. V5C,
no MOT or tax See illustrations £11000 - 13000

Lot 192

24
193 A 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL, registration number YRW 623L, chassis
number 2285404, engine number 2285404, yellow with black vinyl roof
and black coachlines and script. The BMW CSL (Coupé Sport Leicht)
was the lightweight homologation version of the 3.0 CS. Utilising thinner
gauge steel, bespoke aluminium panels (doors, bonnet & boot), slimmer
glass and less sound deadening, this reduced the overall weight by 300 lbs
compared to the standard CS coupé. This very rare lightweight coupé is
one of 500 right hand drive examples, this being No 404. The
specification and equipment levels were high with all-round independent
suspension, Getrag five speed gearbox, 3003cc straight 6 engine with
Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection. The performance figures are still
impressive by today’s standards with 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds and a
top speed of 149 mph when new. The current vendor purchased the CSL
in 1981 and used it as his everyday transport until 1986. The coupé has
been kept in dry storage since. The indicated 67,000 miles is believed to
be genuine. The history file contains the last MOT dated November 1986,
owner’s handbook and various magazine articles. The CSL will now
require careful recommissioning and localised restoration to retain the
originality and should appeal to any BMW collector. V5, no current MOT
or tax See illustrations £7000 - 8000

rule the bidding and no bid shall be retracted. The auctioneer reserves the right to refuse any
bid. The bidder at the sale who is successful in purchasing any lot or lots is entirely responsible
for paying for such lot or lots in accordance with our terms of business. Purchases made on
behalf of a third party are entirely the responsibility of the bidder at the sale. The auctioneer
reserves the right to bid on behalf of the vendors for any lot and to withdraw, consolidate or
divide any lot or lots.

b) The buyer of any lot shall be solely responsible for conforming with the requirements of the

c) The buyer of any lot shall be solely responsible for the obtaining of any export license that
may be required in connection with any lot purchased. (see below)

Export Licences
i) Buyers are reminded that an export license is required for any vehicle purchased for more
than £15,999 and manufactured or produced 50 years prior to the date of export. Certain other
items including, inter alia, all manuscripts and documents 50 or more years old and
photographic material 60 or more years old and valued at £400 or more require export licences.

ii) It should be noted that export licences usually take a minimum of four weeks to obtain and
buyers are reminded that their purchases must be stored away from the auction site, at their
cost, pending export.

iii) Buyers are reminded that it is a serious offence to breach or attempt the regulations
concerning export licences.

4) Buyers are reminded that their purchases are held at their risk from the fall of the hammer and
Charterhouse will not accept any liability for loss of or damage to any lot.

5) Registration. To assist the progress of the sale, all prospective buyers must register their name

sale, either because they are leaving absentee bids or are having a telephone bid, and who are

the bid is not successful. If the bid is successful, this sum will be used towards the final bill.

6) Buyer’s Premium. A buyer’s premium of 15% plus VAT up to £30,000 and 10% plus VAT
thereafter of the hammer price is payable on each lot.

7) Value Added Tax. Lots on which Value Added Tax may be payable by the buyer on the

8) Auctioneers Margin Scheme. The Auctioneers Margin Scheme allows auctioneers to sell
items without VAT on the hammer price. Under the margin scheme an amount equivalent to VAT
at the current rate is added to the buyer’s premium. This amount cannot be refunded. The VAT
element will not be shown separately on the buyer’s invoice.

28

10) Description
a) All lots are sold and purchased ‘as seen’. A vehicle sold ‘as seen’ is sold and purchased
for what it is and with all its faults (if any) and without any condition, warranty or other term
(whether expressed or implied and whether implied by statute, common law, custom or
otherwise) as to the age, description, mileage, suitability, fitness for purpose, merchantable
quality or roadworthiness of the vehicle.

b) Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the description of each lot, but
these, whether made orally or in the catalogue, are expressions of opinion and not
representations of fact. Illustrations whether in the catalogue, on the web site, or sent by email
are solely for guidance and must not be relied upon in any manner whatsoever. Most lots are
of an age and nature which precludes their being in pristine condition. The condition of any lot
and the nature of any damage and/or restoration should be confirmed by the buyer by
examination prior to the sale. All prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the
condition, colour, age and all other matters relating to any lot and no claims will be accepted
in respect of any such matter.

c) Each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied him or herself fully
as to the condition of the lot. If any damage is done to any lot at the viewing or before, during
or after the sale, such damage shall be made good by the person committing such damage,
principals being responsible for the acts of their servants, such damage to be assessed by the
auctioneers.

d) Whilst every endeavour has been made to ensure that the items lotted in this catalogue
will be available and offered for sale in catalogue order, no responsibility can be accepted by
the auctioneers for variations and omissions due to circumstances beyond their control.
Neither Charterhouse nor the sellers of any lot will accept responsibility for any
misrepresentations, misdescriptions or omissions obtained in this catalogue.

11) Contract of Sale

a) On the fall of the hammer, a contract of sale is completed between the seller and the buyer.
Charterhouse is not a party to the contract of sale and shall not be liable for any breach thereof
by the buyer or the seller.

b) If successful in buying a lot, please ensure that your number can be seen by the auctioneer
and that it is your number that is called out. Should there be any doubts as to price or buyer,
please drawer the auctioneer’s attention to it immediately. Please contact the accounts desk
with details of how you will pay.

c) The ownership of the lot(s) purchased will not pass to the buyer until the buyer has paid
the auctioneers in full the total amount due and the auctioneers have applied such payment to
the lot.

29
12) Transfer of Risk. Each lot shall be the purchaser’s sole risk from the fall of the hammer and
shall be sold with all faults and imperfections, the auctioneer not being responsible for the
correct description, genuineness or authenticity of any lot and making no warranty
whatsoever. The purchaser is deemed to have inspected the lots and satisfied himself as to
their condition.

13) Commission Bids. If instructed, the auctioneers will execute bids and advise prospective
purchasers. This service is free. Lots will always be purchased as cheaply as is allowed by
such other bids and reserves as are on the auctioneer’s books. In the event of identical bids,
the earliest will take precedence. There must always be a maximum limit indicated, ie the
amount to which you would bid if you were attending the auction yourself. "Buy" or unlimited
bids will not be accepted. Commission bids placed by telephone are accepted at the client’s
risk. We do accept commission bids by facsimile and email, providing they are accompanied
by full name and address details. We urge our clients to place such commission bids within
one hour of the close of the view day.

14) Telephone Bids. Requests for telephone bidding must be registered with the Accounts
department within one hour of the close of the view day. It may not be possible to accept
requests on sale days. Written confirmation of such bids from persons unknown to the
auctioneers must be received before the commencement of the sale. Whilst every effort will
be made to execute telephone bidding, the auctioneers cannot be held responsible for any
default or neglect in connection with this service. All such arrangements therefore are made
entirely at the prospective buyer’s risk.

15) Collection of Goods. All vehicles must be collected by 3.30 pm on Monday 15th February.
Vehicles not collected by this time will be removed to a compound at Evercreech at a cost of
£50.00 + VAT per vehicle. Storage charges will then be levied at £10.00 per vehicle per day
or part thereof. Motorcycles not collected by 3.30 pm on Monday 15th February will be
removed to our head office in Sherborne at a cost of £30.00 + VAT per motorcycle. Automobilia
will also be removed to our head office for collection at no charge. Lots will only be released
to the buyer or their authorised representative upon presentation of release notes issued by
Charterhouse and settlement of any removal, handling and storage charges due. Purchasers
are reminded that each lot shall be the purchasers sole risk from the fall of the hammer.
Buyers should be aware that no lots will remain at the auction site after 3.30 pm on Monday
9th November.

16) Third Party Liability. Every person on the auctioneers’ premises before, during or after a
sale, shall be deemed to be there at their own risk and shall have no claim against the
auctioneer or owner of the auction premises in respect of any injury they may sustain or any
accident which may occur.
