WITHOUT TREES,
I THINK ...
- flashfloods will occur in lower areas
4. Generalization
Deforestation is when humans remove or clear large areas of forest lands for nonforest use. These include clearing for farming purposes, ranching and urban use. In
these cases, trees are never re-planted. Since the industrial age, about half of
worlds original forest had been destroyed and millions of animals and living things
have been endangered.
Effects of Deforestation see table above
5. Application
Imagine a forest which had been cleared by deforestation. Draw it in your science
notebook.
6. Evaluation
Complete the following statements
1. Trees absorb water in their roots. Without trees, _____.
2. Trees release oxygen in the air to make food. Without trees, _____.
3. Trees hold the soil with their roots. Without trees, _____.
4. Trees absorb carbon dioxide in the air. Without trees, _____.
5. Forest is the home of millions of species of animals. Because of deforestation,
_____

by a pipe leak of
Petron
2. Presentation
Present to the pupils the effect of oil spill in the marine ecosystem and the
people leaving near the
ocean. Ask the pupils, what kind of pollution is oil spill? Let them state the
problem, What are the
destructive effects of all types of pollution?
3. Activity/Discussion
a. Divide yourselves into groups
b. With your group mates, gather data and share ideas about the following:
1. Definition of pollution?
2. 2 examples of air pollutants
3. 2 harmful effects of air pollution
4. 2 examples of water pollutants
5. 2 harmful effects of water pollutants
6. 2 examples of land pollutants
7. 2 harmful effects of land pollution
c. Answers will be discussed in class
4. Generalization
Pollution is the presence of impurities on land, water and air and effects
ecological balance. Pollution is
a result of overpopulation, destructive practices of man and natural calamities.
A. Air pollution The atmosphere helps protect the Earth from the intense heat of
the sun and contains gases which allow life to exist. Making the air impure with
the addition of gases or particles either by nature or human activity destroys
the atmosphere. Things that pollute the air includes nitrogen oxides, carbon
monoxides, hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxides, CFCs (aerosol sprays, refrigerators,
air conditioners) , dust particles and organic compounds are called air
pollutants. These pollutants came from factories, vehicles, burning fossils and
household and farming chemicals. Effects: acid rain(nitrogen oxide and sulphur
dioxide) , health problems, disrupt natural cycles and processes, destruction of
ozone layer, death of plants and animals
B. Water pollution - Impurities that can affect the natural properties of water are
called water pollutants. Water pollutants: garbage, sewage, waste water,
decaying matter, particulate matter, oil spill, poisonous chemicals from
factories, pesticides, insecticides and fertilizer run-offs. Effects: death of
aquatic plants and animals. disruption of food chains, destruction of coral reefs,
health problems, destruction of ecosystems.
C. Land pollution deterioration or destruction of the earths land surfaces as a
result of mans activities and their misuse of land resources. Land pollutants:
pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, minerals from mining activities, garbage,
chemicals from factories. Effects: health problems, destruction of animal
habitat, less fertility of soil.
5. Application
Draw a campaign poster showing the harmful effects of pollution.
6. Evaluation
Write Yes or No in your answer sheet.
1. Acid rain can help plants grow faster.
2. Improper waste disposal can cause health problems.
3. Too much carbon dioxide in the air can cause global warming.
4. Oil spilled from leaking pipes in the oceans can cause the death of marine life.
5. Biodegradable wastes in oceans and seas help sustain marine plants and
animals.
IV. Assignment
