I. EXODUS OF ISRAEL FROM EGYPT


(1:1 18:27)
A. Setting: Growth and Oppression of
Israel in Egypt (1:1 2:25)
Chapter 1
Israel increases greatly in Egypt

12 tribes Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,


Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin, Dan, Naphtali, Gad,
and Asher
Pharaoh oppresses Israel

Pharaoh was threatened by the growing Israelites


(Egyptians made them slaves)

Pharaoh commanded the midwives to kill male


Hebrew babies that are born
Chapter 2
The birth of Moses

Born from Levite parents

Found by pharaohs daughter among the reeds by


the riverbank
Moses flees to Midian

Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. So


Moses killed the Egyptian

Moses encountered two Hebrews that were


fighting. One thing lead to another then one of the
Hebrews told Moses he knew of the Egyptian he
killed. That irked Moses to flee to Midian
God hears Israels groaning

6:27)
Chapter 3
The burning bush

God appeared to Moses through a burning bush

God commissions Moses to deliver Israel from


Egypt

Moses said to God: If I come to the people of


Israel and say to them the God of your fathers has
sent me to you and they ask me What is his
name? (v.13)
God replied to Moses: I am who I am Yahweh
Chapter 4
Moses given powerful signs

Moses was concerned that the Israelites and


Egyptians would not believe him. So God (through
Moses) will show wondrous signs:
Staff to serpent

Leprous hand to non-leprous hand


Water from Nile to blood

Moses was also concerned because he was not


eloquent. Moses pleaded with God to send him
someone so God sent with him Aaron.
Moses returns to Egypt

Chapter 5
Making bricks without straw

The pharaoh commanded the people of Israel to


produce bricks without the use of straw. To make
things worse, the quota is the same as that with
using bricks. Pharaoh ordered this because he
said the Israelites were idle (v.17)

Moses and Aaron are really brothers by blood

Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh

Egyptian sorcerers and magicians can also turn


their staffs into serpents (vv.11-12)

Aarons staff swallowed their staffs but still


Pharaohs heart is still hardened as God ordained
in v.3 (v.12)

God told Moses to turn all sources of water into


blood

Egyptian magicians and sorcerers can do the


same (v.22)

Frogs everywhere; Egyptian magicians can do the


same (v.7)

Gnats all over Egypt; Egyptian magicians can no


longer imitate

It was Gods grace why pharaoh and his people


were still alive (v.15)

God purposely raised up pharaoh to show his


power, that his name may be proclaimed in all the
earth (v.16)

A final plague threatened

The Passover

Blood of the lamb on the doors of the Israelites as


the LORD will passover and strike the firstborns of
Egypt

Unleavened bread Israelites were sent out of


Egypt so quickly that they have to pack up the
dough before it was leavened (v.34, 39)

Firstborns of the land of Egypt including the

Vv.17-18: Although there was a shorter route, God


led them through the wilderness; God knows
whats best for us. Gods wilderness is better than
mans comfortable and short routes.

Crossing the Red Sea

When the Israelites saw that the Egyptians were


pursuing them, they complained against Moses
and why he had to bring them to the wilderness to
die than to remain in Egypt and serve there
Look at what Moses said in vv. 13 to 14.

The song of Moses

This song is inspired by the greatness of God, and


how he delivered Israel from Egypt and guiding
them all the way

D. Journey to Sinai (15:22 18:27)


Chapter 15
Bitter water made sweet

3 days in the wilderness of Shur without water.


When they found water at Marah, they could not
drink it because it was bitter

As God instructed, Moses threw a log into the


water and it became sweet

Bread from heaven

# The Israelites grumbled again because of their


hunger

They did not listen to Moses whom God (not man)


appointed as leader (v. 20)

40 years they ate manna until they came to the


border of Canaan

Manna white like coriander seed; taste like


wafer made with honey (v.31)

Water from the rock

# The Israelites grumbled because they were


thirsty (vv. 2-3)

Moses struck the rock (at Horeb) by his staff and


water came out (vv. 5-6)

Chapter 18

Jethro, Moses father-in-law, brought Moses wife


and children to him from Midian (where Jethro
lives)

Jethro places faith on Yahweh because of what he


has done for Israel

Jethro advises Moses to appoint leaders (that are


trustworthy, etc.) (v.21) to share in his burden of
judging Israel.

II. COVENANT AT SINAI (19:1 40:38)


A. Covenant at Sinai (19:1 24:11)
Chapter 19
Israel at Mt. Sinai

Chapter 19 focuses on the instructions that the


LORD gives to Moses in order to prepare the
Israelites for his presence at Mt. Sinai

Israel encamped before the mountain of Sinai

The consecration, limits, etc. are necessary


because of the presence of a Holy God

The LORD will descend through a fire and thus


produce smoke (v.18)

Even the mountain trembled at Gods presence


(v.18)
Chapter 20
The Ten Commandments

When the ten commandments was spoken, the


Israelites heard it with their own ears (19:9)
1. You shall have no other gods before me (v.3)
2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image
(vv. 4-5)
3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your
God in vain (v.7)
4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy (v.8)
5. Honor your father and mother (v.12)
6. You shall not murder (v.13)
7. You shall not commit adultery (v.14)
8. You shall not steal (v.15)
9. You shall not bear false witness against your
neighbour (v.16)
10. You shall not covet your neighbors house; you
shall not covet your neighbors wife
