Employees Personality
You dont hire for skills, you hire for attitude. You can always teach
skills. (Simon Sinek, 2009)
Based on Hyper Island study in 2013, it shows that 78% of the
participant who are the leader of a company cited personality as the
most desirable quality in employees. Followed by another qualification like
cultural alignment and skill-set. This shows us that a company is not only
sees their employee by his/her skills or work performance, but also the
personality or the behavior. How people behave in a daily life represent
their own personality.
Recording to Pervin and John (1993), personality refers to those
characteristics of the person that account for consistent patterns of
feelings, thinking, and behaving. Personality is an important aspect of a
person in living with others, including in a working world.
To know the employees personality, it must be proven first by
giving some personality tests. Thats way most of companies did a
personality test in a one of recruitment processes besides the other
requirement. The test could be done by several methods like MBTI (MyersBriggs Type Indicator), DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and
Conscientiousness), Graphic (BAUM and DAP), and others.
If there was two kinds of employee, the A who has high achiever but
has a bad attitude, and the B who has average achiever but has a good
attitude, which one that the company should choose? If I was someone on
the human resource, I will choose the B employee. An employee with an
average achiever and a good attitude is better than an employee with a
high achiever but reach it through devious way, never could be respect to
the boss, company rules, and the other employees. Being an employee in
a company is not only about working skill, its important to improve the
social skill and a good attitude also.
Knowing the employees personality is not only from what we saw
from the outside. We cannot sure whether what we saw is a real
personality or not. It could be the way of creating a personal image or
called imaging. A real personality of the employee can be known by
analyzing the how he/she doing his/her job, solve the problem, handle the
pressure, make a decision, and treats colleague.

In contradiction, sometimes some of the company is more concern
about the result of the logic test, skill test, pressure test, IQ test, and
others rather then personality test. All those tests are important, yes, but
when someone works in a company they required to do a team work, they
should know how to work together with people who have various interest
and behavior. The employee must maintain a good condition and
environment with people around them as they work together everyday. A
good condition and environment provide a good work performance.
Like what Simon Sinek said, skill can always be teached. A low score
in skill achiever can be solved by giving some training or secondary
education, but an attitude is very hard to change even impossible.
Because attitude created since we were child and became to makes us
who we are.
It may be impossible to change an employees bad attitude, but its
not impossible to correct the problems that caused bad attitude.
Managers can do a lot to influence employee ethics and personality by
carefully cultivating the right norms, leadership, reward systems, and
culture (Gary Dessler, 2013).
Management should talk to the troubled employees directly and in
private about the issue, ask them what they want and what problem
caused they behave like that. Give some advices and guidance, about how
they should behave as expected by the company and motivates them to
change. Give a specific time to make that change, and see how it works
later.
If there was a good improvement in their behavior, it means that the
company can retain these employees. If there wasnt, the company might
be like to give the second chance like giving more time. Or, tell them what
the worst consequences are. Like the company wont give any promotion,
transferred to the other department, demotion, or fired.
