Frequently Asked Questions
1. What wire sizes are recommended for use with the Liberty Bielle?
Liberty Bielle is intended for wires up to .022x.028. Although the appliance is recommended for .018 x.025
and .022x.028, the minimum size is .016x.022.
2. Wha t a re the exa c t slo t d imensio ns in the fixed p ivo t?
Slot dimensions are 0.6 mm x 2.0 mm (0.024 x 0.087).
3. Is the A00228 Hex Sc rew the sa m e a s RM Lo c ks sold sep a ra tely?
Yes. RM Lock screws have a special tapered end design ideally suited for securing the archwire into the
pivot.

4. Once the RM Lock is fully engaged should the wire be stationary or allowed to move?
If the RM Lock is engaged and tightened to the wire, it should not move. The screw should be tightened for
the tapered section to secure the wire against the back wall of the slot. Any slop in the wire is an indication
that the taper of the screw was not tightened far enough or that the wire itself is too small.
5. Wha t m a teria l a re Lib erty Bielle c o m p o nents m a d e o f?
Standard AISI 316L Stainless Steel.
6. Wha t fo rc e is p ro vid ed to a d va nc e the m a nd ib le sinc e there is no sp ring ?
If the appliance is measured and engaged correctly, the length of the upper rod according to each patient
provides advancing force when biting down. The lower rod acts as a hard stop during normal bite position.
Activation spacers can be added to further mandibular advancement (1.5 mm).

7. Ho w m uc h a d va nc em ent d o you p la n fo r in the initia l setup (first m o nth)? Per m o nth?
Individual cases should be measured to Ideal Class I position from the start. The disappearance of the
posterior malocclusion indicates offset correction. At least 3 months is necessary to observe changes.
8. Ca n there b e a ny d isto rtion in the w ire w hen eng a g ed insid e the p ivo t a nd RM Lo c k?
If the pivots are mounted correctly parallel to the occlusal edge (horizontal) there should be no distortion
in the wire.

9. Wha t p revents the b a ll sc rew fro m b ec o m ing lo o se o r c o m ing o ut?

Theballscrewisspeciallydesignedtotaroundedholecavityontheupperandlowerrods. Thedesign
is unique and allows the rods / posts to move in circular motion without loosening the screw (the ball
assembly joint is what prevents the screw from coming out).
If the ball screw is tightened correctly, the rod should move with ease without loosening the screw (imagine
ball bone joints in the body works the same way!)

10. What is the intended range of lateral mobility allowed by Liberty Bielle?
LibertyBielleallowsfulllateralmobilityduetothebenetsofincorporatingaballjointdesignwhich
minimizes destructive lateral forces found in other modern Herbst appliances. The appliance allows range
far exceeding what the human bite construction will allow ~ 710 mm right and left (Fricton, 2004)
11. Wha t p revents the up p er a nd lo w er ro d s fro m c o m ing a p a rt o n a la rg e o p en ja w ?
Range of motion of the jaw is measured from occlusal edge to occlusal edge of the central incisors.
Minimumnormaljawopeningisconsideredtobeabouttwongerwidthsattheknucklesofthepatients
dominant hand, or approximately 40 mm (1.57) (Fricton, 2004).
Under recommended mounting procedures, upper and lower rod lengths are more than enough to
accommodate the estimated 1.70 total extension from pivottopivot on a typical open jaw, if measured and
cut correctly.
12. Are the RM Lo c k sc rew s tig htened fro m the o c c lusa l fo r b o th up p er a nd lo w er?
Yes. The hex screws should be tightened from the occlusal to allow access by the hex wrench.
