1. Why do I have to go through a Concentration Portfolio Review?

In accordance with National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accreditation guidelines,
students within the Art and Art History Department at UT Arlington with the intent of pursuing a B.F.A.,
B.F.A with Art Certification, or a B.A. in Studio Art are required to participate in a Concentration Portfolio
Review.
The Concentration Portfolio Review (CPR) is a method of assessing art students progress and their
preparedness to enter advanced classes in the B.F.A. or B.A. program. The evaluation of a students
portfolio results in a recommendation for acceptance into either the B.F.A. or B.A. program based on the
potential to excel in the intended area of study.
All students pursuing a degree in studio art are considered Art Intended until successful completion of
CPR. Art Intended students are scheduled for CPR according to their degree progress. Reviews occur
during the semester that a student has enrolled in their 21st hour of studio art (either Fall or Spring
semester), which is the equivalent of seven classes.
The Art Foundations curriculum is fundamental in forming sound studio practice where critical thinking is
encouraged through the implementation of principles of discussion, writing, and visual expression.
Students must complete Art Foundation courses before moving on to upper level classes. Moreover, all
foundation level courses are required for CPR application into the B.F.A. or B.A. program.

2. When will I be notified?

You should receive an email notification through your UTA email account approximately one month prior to
the review. Please read the email carefully and visit the Art + Art History departments website
(www.uta.edu/art) to download the necessary application forms. Students must return the CPR application
to the main office Art + Art History office (Room 335 in the Fine Arts Building) by the specified due date.

3. What do I need to bring?

Portfolios should include 14-17 works of art representing seven studio art courses, including Art 1305- 2D
Design, Art 1306-3D Design, Art 1307-Drawing Fundamentals and Art 2304-Digital Design. Any course that
satisfies the 2D Studio, 3D Studio and Media requirement of the degree plan should also be included. Two
works from each course is sufficient.
If you are utilizing Transfer or Architecture credit to fulfill an Art Foundation requirement, you will be
required to submit work from these classes. Check your UMAP or with an advisor to verify.
If you do not have work from the Art Foundation courses necessary for the review, you should create works
that exemplify the course objectives found in the course description and syllabus.

4. When and where do I bring my work?

Your intended area of concentration/study determines your portfolio review date, scheduled several weeks
prior to the start of advising for the following semester. Typically 6 weeks into each semester (Fall and
Spring). On the review date, applicants check in across from Einstein Bagels the Fine Arts Building lobby,
and receive instructions for set up, including a room designation and placement number.

5. Who will review my work?

Reviews are conducted by faculty within the intended area of concentration.

6. How is my work being evaluated?

The work should represent a strong understanding and grasp of the following: elements and principles of
design in both two and three dimensions, drawing fundamentals and digital and/or time-based media. Work

should express strong potential for continued studies within the intended area of concentration.
All work should be displayed anonymously. Faculty will evaluate work according to each concentrations
principles, and the evaluation rankings are tallied for an overall score. An evaluation template is available
on the departments website for your reference.

7. What if I do not pass the review?

Students who do not earn a satisfactory CPR score and wish to continue in the Art + Art History department
are required to submit a revised portfolio at the CPR in the Fall or Spring semester immediately following
their first review.
These students are advised for classes and degree options based on their overall score. Students may
have an opportunity to take advanced art courses, or may be restricted to additional foundation courses in
preparation for a second CPR attempt.
In the event of an unsuccessful second attempt, students will be advised to pursue degree options in an
area outside the Art and Art History Department.
If you have questions regarding your CPR experience or score, please contact an academic advisor at 817272-2891.
