1. INTRODUCTION
The work covered in this Method Statement is the topographic survey of the Work Site (including
Gama Temporary Site Facilities) of the Air Separation Unit Construction of Shell Pearl GTL Plant
Project.
The main objectives of this study are:
1. To verify and confirm the status and coordinates of the reference benchmarks.
Benchmarks are referred to as CONTRACTOR benchmarks for construction and were
established previously. If required, new benchmarks may be established by the
Contractor and/or Subcontractor based on the existing ones at required locations.
2. To verify and confirm existing ground on site prior to topsoil removal and excavation.
3. To provide a proper topographical grid system to form the basis for future measurements
at facilities and construction works.
The construction of Benchmarks is beyond the scope of this document and will be carried out as
per the Method Statement for Establishment of Permanent Benchmarks (T-4.234.068)

4. HSSE
All works shall be in compliance with the State of Qatar laws and regulations, Ras Laffan
Industrial City and international standards/codes, and Company and Contractor
requirements and instructions.
All personnel will go through Gama, Linde and Company Safety Induction courses as well
as other trainings as identified by their supervisor. Please see Document Number GTLGM-001-A-5635 for details.
A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) specific for this work including a Risk Assessment, is
prepared as per Gama procedure GTL-GM-001-A-5626 and is attached herein. Such
JSA addresses the hazards associated with each task within the scope of this Method
Statement and introduces the controls that will be implemented to reduce the associated
risks to acceptable levels. The JSA will be used by the Site Supervisor as the basis of his
TSTI / TSTO and his Toolbox Talks.
All personnel will have PPE required for their specific tasks in addition to the minimum
PPE (coveralls, safety goggles, safety shoes, high-visibility vests, gloves) at site at all
times as required.

METHOD OF EXECUTION
5.1.

RECONNAISSANCE

Upon completion of mobilization to Ras Laffan and receiving of necessary passes, the chief
survey engineer and the survey team shall conduct a site reconnaissance.
The main objectives of the said reconnaissance are to:
1. Determination of work order
2. Benchmark verification
3. Reference point set up
4. Calibration record of survey equipment
Prior to GAMA Survey permanent controls (which will be established by close traverse
method), GAMA survey team shall relocate existing benchmark (Contractor will provide
survey control drawings for the use of construction) and will be checked/accepted/signed by
Contractor and/or Company representative. The Benchmarks will be established as per
Method Statement for Establishment of Permanent Benchmarks (T-4.234.068) in line with
Technical Specification for Survey and Monitoring (T.4-132.867).
The maximum acceptable closing error of all leveling shall be less than 15 K mm (where K
is the distance leveled in kilometers (Qatar Survey Manual-2.1.1.5).
The maximum acceptable standard for traversing shall be used as a representative fraction
will close to 1/25000 (Qatar Survey Manual-2.2.3.1)
The benchmarks shall be constructed with concrete according to the existing benchmarks
in adequate frequency. To specify the coordinates of the benchmarks, angular and
dimensional values shall be obtained by using total stations and implementing closed
traverse method. Moreover, in order to specify and determine the levels, Automatic Levels
shall be used.
In the case of existing underground services, the coordinates of these identified services
will be provided by Contractor prior to commencement of the work.

TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY

A closed traverse to test the accuracy of the surveying equipment

B

A
C
1. A, B and C are the existing point with known coordinates. Total station is to be placed at
A point and A, B and C points coordinates are to be transferred to Total Station after the
reflectors (tripod) are set at B and C points
2. The azimuth angle is calculated in accordance with the existing coordinates between
points A & B, so A point is connected to B point by using azimuth angle
3. C points coordinates are checked by using total station. If correct, the survey is to be
started.
All data shall be electronically stored for post-processing at the end of each day. The
appropriate field shall be completed by the surveyor for quality checking.
Underground services are to be identified and established first by securing from existing
underground utility drawings furnished by the Contractor and/or the Company and will be
relocated with ground markings, if necessary. However, their above ground identifiers
(i.e. manholes, cable markers, etc) shall be surveyed.
Calculations and drawings of triangulation will be submitted to Contractor.

5.3.

FINAL REPORT

All reports shall be related to the site datum points and the results of the Topographical
Survey shall be presented by a Final Report consisting of the following:
1) Existing ground level prior to excavation (Soil excavation).
2) After excavation (Rock levels, etc.).
3) After filling (final/required levels).
4) Backfilling Grid System for FDT locations
