The Sifaat (qualities) of the 'Ibaadur-Rahmaan

Allah (swt) describes the 'Ibaadur-Rahmaan, the true slaves of Allah, in Surah Furqaan -
ayaat 63-76. They are characterized by the fact that they perform certain acts and abstain
from others. These adjectival qualifiers of the 'Ibaadur-Rahmaan are detailed below:

1. They are those who walk upon the earth modestly, that is, peacefully and humbly, and
who, when the ignorant address them (with statements that they are averse to), say [words
of] peace (salām), in other words, words by which they are safe (yaslamūna) from
[committing] any sin.

2. They spend the night before their Lord, prostrating and standing [in worship], in other
words, they spend the night performing prayers.

3. They beseech Allah to avert from them, the chastisement of Hell - that wretched
destination whose chastisement is abiding.

4. They spend upon their dependents in moderation, and are neither prodigal nor
parsimonious.

5. They do not call on another god along with Allah, nor do they slay any soul which
Allah has forbidden to be slain, except with due cause, and they do not commit
fornication — for whoever does one of these three things, shall meet with a penalty
multiplied on the Day of Resurrection and will abide in that torment humiliated - except
for one who repents, and believes, and acts righteously, for such, Allah will replace their
evil deeds with good deeds in the Hereafter, for Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.

6. The 'Ibaadur-Rahmaan are also those who do not give false testimony, that is,
testimony containing mendacity and falsehood, and, when they come across senseless
talk, in the way of vile speech and otherwise, they pass by with dignity, shunning such
vanity.

7. They are those who, when they are reminded or are admonished, of the revelations of
their Lord, that is, reminded of the Qur’ān, do not behave as if they are deaf and blind to
the reminder, but listen, contemplate, benefit from the reminder and are obedient to Ar-
Rahmaan.

8. They beseech Allah for good for themselves as well as their families, saying: ‘Our
Lord! Grant us in our spouses and our offspring a joyful sight, for us, so that we see them
obedient to You, and make us paragons of virtue, for the God-fearing’.

For such among the slaves of Allah, that possess these noble traits, Allah has promised
the following reward:
Those, they will be rewarded with the sublime abode, the highest degree in Paradise,
forasmuch as they were steadfast, in obedience to Allah, and they will be met therein
with a greeting and [words of] peace from the angels; abiding therein ... excellent is it as
an abode and station, as a place of residence for them (i.e. the 'Ibaadur-Rahmaan).

[Surah Furqaan: Ayaat 63-76]

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the
earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say
[words of] peace,

And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and
standing [in prayer]

And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell.
Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;

Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."

And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or
sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate

And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul
which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not
commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will
meet a penalty.

Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he

will abide therein humiliated –

Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them
Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving
and Merciful.

And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allah
with [accepted] repentance.
And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass
near ill speech, they pass by with dignity.

And those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall
upon them deaf and blind.

And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and
offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the
righteous."

Those will be awarded the Chamber for what they patiently endured,
and they will be received therein with greetings and [words of] peace.

Abiding eternally therein. Good is the settlement and residence.
