First of all, let us express our gratitude
to the God Almighty for His blessing so we
are able to attend the Opening Ceremony

of the 8th Joint Exercise Garuda Shield
2014.
As the Indonesian Army Chief of Staff, I
would like to convey my grateful to the US
Army First Corps Commander, Lieutenan
General Stephen Lanza, for the opportunity
given to Indonesian Army soldier to
participate in this joint exercise.

The Garuda Shield joint exercise is not
only intended to improve the military
professionalism and interoperability among
training participants, but to increase the
cooperation as well, to boost mutual trust
and friendship by upholding the principle of
equality and mutual relationship between
two Armies.

Distinguished participants,
We all realize that the Joint Exercise of
Garuda Shield has been conducted yearly

for 8 times. During this time, the two
countries have learned and shared
experiences dealing with combats tactics
and technics along with the experience of
the respective soldiers.

The 8th Joint Exercise of Garuda Shield
2014 will encompas on various exercise
subjects. Firstly, the Command Post
Exercise will train both participants the
conduct of peacekeeping operation. Then, in
Field Training Exercise, both of our soldiers
will share knowledge and skill in Counter
Insurgency
operation.
Our
Medical
Personnel will also conduct join training in
medical treatment and evacuation. Lastly,
both of our army will conduct aviation
exercise which will focus on tactical
operation and firing exercise.

Hence, I fully hope that all activities in
this exercise could be performed well as its
target, so it could encourage the soldier, the
unit and the two Armies of both countries.

As a professional soldier, exercise is an
essential need to ensure the successful of
task execution and the readiness of troops
in facing every possibility tasks with different
characteristics.

The characteristics of regions that
experiencing conflict, require different
pattern of treatment. Thus, we need a
realistic training scenarios approaching the
actual area of operation, so the

In accordance with that, I would l expect
all participants to pay attention and abide by
the following :

Firstly. Conduct the exercise seriously and
full of responsibity, as the medium to
sharpen the soldiers skills and enhance the
soldiers professionalism.

Secondly. Pay attention to the safety and
security of personnel, material, information,
as well as carrying out all the activities with
the procedures of exercise, discipline and
professional.

Thirdly. Create the atmosphere of intimacy
as the expression of friendship and solidarity
among fellow trainees based on mutual
understanding and mutual respect .

Forthly. Evaluate thoroughly, so constraints
and obstacles during exercise could be used
as the input to improve the quality of the
next joint exercise.

Moreover, I do hope this exercise could
be conducted well by performing the
Standard of Procedure of the Joint Exercise
which has been agreed, so all the term of
exercise could be executed safely and
smoothly.
