look good
all summer
long?

SUMMER IS CLOSING IN FAST


and this summer wont be any different

than past summers. Americans love the


summer. Kids are out of school and the
longer days, vacations and sunshine
lure us all out to play. Bathing suits
are encouraged as many of us will be
keeping cool at beaches and pools,
or just limiting our clothing to stay cool.
And of course this brings on the pressure
of how am I going to look in my bikini
or when I take my shirt off. Pretty much
all of us deal with this on some level.
Yes it would be nice if we all had the
courage to not care, but we are humans
and of course we will! Besides, a little
pressure to look better can be healthy.
Here are a few tips to help you look
good all summer.
Do Cardio. One of the easiest ways
to speed up your metabolism is with
basic cardio training (walking, jogging,
biking, etc.). When youre walking, use
an invigorated pace to make sure your
heart rate increases and you can burn
more fat.
Work out with a friend. You will
keep each other accountable and this
will help you be more consistent. Your
workouts will also go by much faster as
you chat between sets or during cardio
training.
Drink plenty of water. Take 16-32
ounces of water with you and sip it as
you run, walk, lift weights etc. If your
body is properly hydrated you will also
fnd yourself less hungry. The summer
months will draw water out of your
body much faster than in the winter. A
good range is between 3 and 5 quarts
per day depending on your weight and
activity level.

Breathe. Breathing is very important


as oxygen will help you burn fat and
increase energy. As you are exercising
be sure to take in long, deep breaths.
Just as we focus on staying hydrated,
remember to stay oxygenated, too.

along a small cooler with some healthy


snacks when going on outings. Fruits,
veggies, nuts, etc. This will help you
avoid unhealthy snacks and binge
eating when you get too hungry. Fruits
and veggies will also help you stay
hydrated.
Involve the whole family. Our family
has enjoyed some great memories
renting bikes and riding on the beach
for a couple of hours. We all fnished
up exhausted, but invigorated from the
fresh air.
Use what's around you. Find
anything you can to help you work out:
benches, stairs, sand, etc. You may not
even need a gym to get your ftness
groove on. I recently found a fight of
20 stairs and at the top was the perfect
bench for seat dips and pushups. Within
20 minutes, I was exhausted. Look
around and be creative; there is no
excuse for not getting some training
in no matter where you are. If you're
traveling, pack some elastic tubing just
in case you cant fnd anywhere to work
out. Bands can be a great way to get in
a quick workout when youre on the go.

Maple Syrup for


Fighting Bugs?

Antibiotic usage, sometimes when


not really needed, has led to
the emergence of drug-resistant
bacteria, a growing public health
concern worldwide. But a recent
study at McGill University in
Canada suggests a tasty
solution: maple syrup.
In the study, the researchers
found that a concentrated
extract of maple syrup used
in combination with common
antibiotics can increase the
bacterias susceptibility to the
medication, leading to overall
lower antibiotic usage.

Its long been recognized that the media, particularly high fashion or beauty
magazines, often objectify women, reducing them to a collection of body parts.
And women who spend a lot of time reading such magazines may compare their
appearances, often unfavorably, to other women.
But increasingly, young women who spend an average of two hours a day
on Facebook looking at photos often objectify themselves, comparing their
appearances with their peers, and even their own past images, claims a paper
published recently in Psychology of Women Quarterly.
The researchers say that this comparison is unhealthy and recommend that
young women post fewer images of themselves on Facebook and follow
others on Facebook who post photos less frequently in order to stop comparing
themselves and promote wellness.

in them? There may be good
reasons to include tree nuts like
almonds, cashews and pistachios
in your diet, regardless of calorie
count, say researchers from Tufts
University. It seems that these
high fat, low carb treats can
help with blood sugar control
perhaps even fend off Type
2 diabetes by replacing less
healthy carbs like pretzels and
crackers, which raise your blood
sugar rapidly. And the healthy
fat in nuts helps you to stay
full longer, which decreases the
likelihood that youll overeat.

Trying to do the right thing with diet and workouts, but just
cant give up that sugar? It may be a tough habit to break
because sugar helps relieve stress, a new study suggests.
The study, published in the Endocrine Societys Journal of
Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, found that those who
drank sugar sweetened beverages over a 12-day period of time
had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol when exposed to
a stressful math test than those who drank aspartame-sweetened
beverages. And they had less of a stress response in the brain on
MRI screening.
The authors concluded that varying levels of sugar
consumption may be a reason that people react differently to
stressful situations. They also suggest that there are healthier
ways to deal with stress than with sugar.

Hate hay fever? Preliminary research suggests that those
who suffer from the spring and summer scourge are less
likely to develop cancer, perhaps because of the immune
stimulating effect of the condition.

Academy of Dermatology
(AAD) does not recommend
getting vitamin D from sun
exposure or indoor tanning
due to the increased risk of
developing skin cancer.
Very few foods (with the
exception of cod liver oil and
some fatty fshes) contain
the amount of vitamin D
recommended by the Institute
of Medicine, so supplementing
may be the way to go with this
essential nutrient.

Sunscreen 101

Choosing the right sunscreen can help reduce your risk of skin cancer,
including melanoma. Here are some things to look for on the label.
Broad-Spectrum. Means the product protects the skin from both
ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays.
Sunscreen vs. Sunblock. Since no lotion, spray or cream can block
the sun entirely, manufacturers can no longer identify their products as
sunblocks.
Water-Proof vs. Resistant. Sunscreens can no longer claim to be
sweat- and water-proof, so youll see the terms sweat- and waterresistant on product labels. This protective warning is meant to remind
you to reapply after swimming and sweating.
How long am I protected? Sunscreens must now reveal the amount
of time you are safely protected (e.g., 40 minutes) from UV rays while
swimming and/or sweating based on standard testing.
SPF rating. The SPF rating on the bottle actually applies to UVB rays
ONLY (rays that cause sunburn). Some experts believe that there is
little-to-no additional beneft in products with SPF ratings higher than 50.
In fact, a proposed FDA regulation may require sunscreen products with
SPF values higher than 50 to be labeled as SPF 50+. Others disagree.
The jury is still out on this one, but you will see some sunscreens have
already moved to labeling their products this way.

New Sunscreen Ingredients on the Horizon

On November 29th, 2014, President Obama signed the bipartisan Sunscreen Innovation Act into law, which
provides timelines for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to review new sunscreen ingredients. These ingredients
(Tinosorb S and Tinosorb M to name a couple) have been used safely and effectively in Europe for many years and
offer signifcantly more defense against harmful UV rays.
Wondering why the United States is so behind the times on this one? Sunscreens are reviewed in the same manner
as drugs (not cosmetics) by the FDA, which is a more stringent process. Until recently, some of these new ingredients
have been sitting in backlog for years waiting to be reviewed! The new law gives the FDA up to 270 days to
determine if the new sunscreen ingredients are generally recognized as safe and effective.
Hopefully, youll see sunscreen brands in the United States fnally able to add these new ingredients to products by
next summer!

SUMMER OFFICIALLY STARTS JUNE 21ST. Are you ready?


Before you head for beaches, outdoor sports, BBQs and pool parties,
check in with yourself. Where are you right now with your health and
ftness goals? Have you been working hard all year? If so, congrats
youve been able to make health and ftness a habit. As for the
rest of you, did something keep you from reaching your goals?
Did life happen and your schedule couldnt coexist with your
goals? Maybe a little procrastination snuck itself in there.
Whatever the case may be, weve got a simple, yet
effective training regimen for you to get back on the right
track. While this is not a comprehensive training program,
this plan is plenty good and monumentally better than
having no plan at all. So feel free to use this booster shot to
jumpstart your training to see you into summer.
1. SET A GOAL: First, begin by asking yourself what your long-term goal is starting now.
Then pick your frst checkpoint (i.e. six week summer slimdown). Start thinking of things you can
do every day to push you closer to your goal, and go from there.
2. MINIMUM EFFECTIVE DOSE: Chances are you might be reading this article because
you need a kick in the pants but dont want to be overwhelmed by a massive program. After
establishing some goals, its time to consolidate your plan into something manageable
given the short time frame of getting your body ready for summer. This accounts for
outside variables to ensure you dont become a victim of your own circumstances. Be
realistic, states personal trainer Mark Leiker (@marionallstarz) of Stamina Fitness in
San Anselmo, CA. Factor your current status versus time. Set check-point goals
within your time frame on track to your ultimate goal. Set S.M.A.R.T. (specifc,
measurable, action, realistic, time-bound) goals to hold yourself accountable.
3. CONSISTENCY: Making progress, especially with a time frame in
mind, will require consistency. Whether its nutrition or training, it will take
hard work, consistency and patience, says nutrition coach and trainer
Ritz Guggiana (@nutra_ritz) of Warehouse Fitness, in Rohnert Park, CA.
Remember Rome wasnt built overnight, but there was progress made
every single day.
4. TRAIN SMARTER & HARDER: Just because the time frame is
shorter, doesnt mean the principle foundations of your training regimen
should suffer. Dont disregard the fundamental movements and skip the
get-ripped-quick gimmicks. Work on the fundamental movements (push,
pull, hinge, squat and ground work), and each workout will improve
overall movement quality, maintains strength and conditioning coach,
Taylor Lewis (@tlstrength), of San Rafael, CA. If pressed for time, follow
the sample workouts provided in this article.
5. DONT OVERSHOOT: Be cognizant of training balance; dont seek
to overcompensate for your weaknesses by cutting out foundational training
elements. Global trainer Chris Albert (@warriorsoulftness) of Redlands, CA
warns that overtraining lagging body parts can actually further exacerbate
existing imbalances and is potentially problematic.

on the beach and watched a surfer
effortlessly dance upon the waves?
Have you ever yearned to experience
the rush of riding a wave for yourself?
Now is the time to get off the beach and
into the ocean.
For beginners, surfng can feel more
like foundering when youre starting
out. Just getting your board through
the surf and paddling out can be a
workout in itself. You may never be
able to fully prepare for or control what
Mother ocean will present to you each
day, but proper training on land can
help ensure you stay afoat and enjoy
your surfng experience.

improve your surfng technique with
key exercises using a stability ball.
Here are fve moves he suggests you
should try if you want to get in great
shape for surfng. All you need is a
yoga mat and a stability ball:

3. Keep your spine long, head in line
with your spine.
4. Repeat on the other side.

More than a Rush

While catching a wave can be


exhilarating, being in the ocean offers

benefts that go beyond the adrenaline


rush. I go out there [into the water]
with questions. Im always answered,
says Nevarez.
Being in the water can help your
thoughts slow down, put life matters
into perspective, and also help you
become less reactive. Hence, the
laid-back surfer reputation. Ive
lost 3 phones in the ocean during
long distance paddles, says Jaime
Moreno, a stand-up paddleboard and
ftness instructor in Hermosa Beach,
California. Things I used to get
upset about dont bother me as much
anymore.
What lessons does the ocean have
for you? Youll have to take the plunge
and ride the wave to fnd out.

Before You Go

Before you step foot in the ocean, get


familiar with your environment. Mike
Murphy, an Ocean Lifeguard Specialist
in Los Angeles County advises
beachgoers to seek out the guard on
duty and get informed before diving in.
Rip currents are a primary concern,
says Murphy. The lifeguard on duty can
point out trouble zones, and let you
know where its safe to surf.
Also, remain humble and stick to
small crumbling waves when starting
out. And lastly, learn the basics and
surf with an experienced surfer or hire

1. Begin in pushup position with your
hands on the mat, shoulder-width

2. Lift one leg up off the ball. Stabilize
yourself on the ball as you pull the
knee in towards your elbow. Contract
the outer glute and aim to have your
inner thigh parallel to the ground.
3. With control, replace your foot on
the ball and repeat on the other side.
JACKHAMMER PUSHUP:
This is an excellent move to help you
get through the surf. The spinal fexion
in this move mimics the duck dive,
sink-under (the wave) and pull-through
(when you come up through the wave),
says Nevarez.

1. Be the observer. In order to get


past the break successfully you have
to watch the patterns of the waves,
look for channels and go when the time
is right so you save your energy for
catching waves rather than struggling to
get out past the break.
In life, its important to listen and
watch rather than just act. You can
waste precious energy doing the same
thing and failing over and over again.
Through observance and introspection
we open ourselves up to growth and
change creating the awareness to
choose differently.

2. Its tough getting started.


Whether its starting an exercise
program, a business or a new
relationship, getting started can be the
toughest part. Waking up early, tugging
on a sometimes-still damp wetsuit and
tackling the waves requires a lot of
effort and motivation, but once you
get out on the water, hear nothing but
the waves crashing and catch your frst
wave, you know it was all worth it.
In life, we all have to go through
undesirable obstacles. Dont let those
obstacles stand in the way of your goal.
Youll miss out on the best rides of your
life if you stay on shore.

3. Let go of control and go


with the fow. You cant control the

conditions of the ocean, just like you


cant control life or others. By letting
go of control in the water you may
start letting go of thoughts, feelings,
people and situations that are weighing
you down emotionally. When you stop
struggling and fghting for control, you
foat.

of the experience. Getting back on


your board every time you fall builds
resilience and character.

4. Reserve your energy and


wait for the right wave. Waves
can be deceiving. Sometimes it looks
like the perfect wave so you furiously
start paddling, only for the wave to
roll beneath you and pass you by.
Opportunities are a lot like waves. If you
go for every one that rolls in youll be
exhausted and unable to catch the right
wave when it comes. Have patience, be
the observer, reserve your energy and
wait for right opportunity to present
itself. Believe in yourself and have faith
that it will.

5. You have to lean over the


edge. If you want to catch a wave
you have to lean over the edge. Many
people tend to scoot too far back on
their boards out of fear of nose-diving,
but know that youre going to nose-dive
from time to time. If you sit back and
expect the wave to do all the work youll
be left disappointed. The same goes
for life. If you expect your goals to just
happen or rely on someone else to do
the work for you, then youll be waiting
for a long time.

6. When you fall, get back up.


Heres the truth: youre probably going
to falla lot. But with every fall you
learn something new. Falling is part

If you paddle too far out past the
break youll never catch a wave. You
cant always play it safe. You have to
take risks. Dont be afraid to go for the
opportunities that seem the scariest.
They normally turn out to be the best.

8. There are sharks out there.


There are sharks out there, just like

world. You have to be careful, but you
cant let it stop you from pursuing your
goals.

9. Ground yourself and just


hold on. When a wave is crashing and
you cant go over it or cant duck or dive
beneath it, you may have to ditch your
board and ground yourself by digging
your hands into the ocean foor and
holding on. Whenever life gets tough,
ground yourself by doing what makes
you happy. Hold on to the positive and
know that the negative feelings and
obstacles will pass.

10. Fully commit to the wave.


If you decide to take a wave, you have
to fully commit. If you stop paddling too
soon youll never catch a ride. The same
goes for your dreams in life. You have to
put your heart, body, mind and soul into

The Weekend Binge

Don't let a weekend spent racking up the calories ruin your dieting eforts
during the week. Pay attention and stay strong! BY JENNY BROERS
DO YOU FEEL like youre always on a diet, but never making progress?
Chances are your weekends are to blame. Many people on nutrition
programs start their week off well. They track their macros and prepare
most, in not all, of their meals at home. But, by the time Friday night rolls
around, they are ready to reward themselves for sticking to their meal
plan and celebrate.
I was guilty of this. My typical weekend meal would consist of
eating half of an appetizer, spinach and artichoke dip, followed by
festa lime chicken, and topped off by sharing a chocolate chip
cookie sundae. I knew my meal wasnt healthy but I never
researched the nutritional information...until now.
According to the restaurant's website, spinach and
artichoke dip from Applebee's contains 830 total calories
(490 from fat), 1,930 milligrams of sodium and 69 grams
of carbohydrates. Fiesta lime chicken contains 1,310 total
calories (690 from fat), 3,400 milligrams of sodium and
100 grams of carbohydrates.
Add in half of the chocolate chip cookie sundae (700
calories, 103 grams of carbohydrates and 70 grams
of sugar just for half!) and my meal equals 2,425
total calories and three days worth of my current
allotment for carbohydrates. Talk about a cheat
meal! Consider the rest of your weekend meals
following this pattern and its easy to see where the
extra pounds start to sneak up.
Its frustrating to consistently make sacrifces,
turn down delicious food at work lunches, exercise
regularly, eat well; avoid soda, alcohol and sugary drinks,
and still gain weight.
Identifying the problem is half the battle. Here are some tips for
surviving the weekend, meal plan intact.
1. Do your research ahead of time. Most restaurants have
nutritional information for their menus posted online. Even
healthy looking choices like salads can be inundated with calories
and sugar. Help yourself make a good choice by browsing the
nutritional information ahead of time and walk into the restaurant
with a plan that fts your goals.
2. Ask for a to-go box when your meal arrives. Correctly
portion your servings according to your macros and put the
remaining food in the box. Boxing up your extras ahead of
time will help avoid mindless overeating.
3. Avoid letting a cheat meal become a binge or a
cheat weekend. Perhaps its better to think of it as a cheat
item. Have a drink, or your favorite main dish, or dessert
not all three. One small indulgence isnt going to completely
derail your progress, but multiple allowances will catch up
with you quickly.
When the weekend approaches, continue to be mindful of
your goals. Dont let an hour of overindulgence counteract
an entire week of hard work. Your discipline and sacrifces
will pay off in the future if consistently prioritize what you
want most over what you crave now. MS&F

The holiday vacation on South Padre Island

had been great fun and included a yacht
cruise and a beach horseback ride. But when
Crissy Cantu later saw the picture of the horses
behind and hers it was not so fun.
When her husband jokingly made the
comment, I like my women big, to a coworker, Crissy saw something she hadnt seen
before. Her husband hadnt meant to hurt her
feelings at all, but suddenly she saw how out
of control her weight had become. I was
very overwhelmed by the picture of me on the
horse, she said. My butt was huge!
Crissy knew at 229 pounds, it was time for
some changes.

To Go To a Farmers Market

HAVE YOU BEEN to a farmers


market lately? According to the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA), farmers
markets have never been more popular.
Since 1994, when the agency began
publishing the National Directory of
Farmers Markets, which lists all markets
known to operate in the country, the
listings have gone from a mere 1,755 to
a whopping 8,268!
But as the farm-to-table, local-food
movement is gaining momentum
in homes, restaurants and schools
throughout the nation, the reality
is that supercenters like Walmart
capture a full fourth to half of the $550
billion Americans spend each year on
groceries.

And its easy to see why. With todays


busy lifestyles, parents schlepping
between work and a myriad of after
school activities one stop shopping
has its appeal. Whats easier than being
able to buy toiletries, school supplies,
clothing, hardware items and your
groceries all in one place, and be
done with it for a week or two?
But there are great reasons to try
to carve out the time to attend a local
farmers market near you as often as
possible, according to food experts.
Here are seven:

1. FOOD SAFETY. When you take


a look at major food recalls, in every
instance, there are just too many

bodies handling the food, said Lee


Lichtenwalner, owner along with wife
Dawn of Dandelion Lane Farm in
Northeast Ohio.
Just this year, according to
Lichtenwalner, foods containing
spinach contaminated with Listeria
monocytogenes that were sold at a
number of major retailers, including
Target, Costco and Wegmans, were
recalled, necessitating a long and
complex federal investigation into the
source of contamination to determine
whether it happened at a particular
farm or at one of several food
processing plants.
On the highest level, the advantages
of buying at farmers markets is the

relative traceability and transparency


of the food supply chain, said Rachel
Greenberger, Director of Food Sol, an
action tank for food entrepreneurs and
eater entrepreneurs at Babson College
in Massachusetts. Because production
is closer by and tends to have a human
face, not just the side of a box on the
shelf, eaters are increasingly feeling
that local sources are more trustworthy
and easier to comprehend than those
of the multinational producers where
components of the end product may
have touched 5-6 continents on the
lengthy journey to plate, and thus
possibly have been handled in suspect
circumstances, she explained.

2. PRODUCE FRESHNESS AND


QUALITY. News fash: fresh produce
is alive. For a short period of time after
it has been removed from the plant,
said Monique Richard, MS, RDN, LDN,
a licensed and registered dietitian
nutritionist and owner of NutritionIn-Sight, it continues the metabolic
activity that allowed it grow in the
feld. This occurs through a process
called respiration, which involves the

oxidation of sugars to produce carbon


dioxide, water and heat.
The storage life of the produce is
affected by its respiratory activity, and
those crops with higher respiration
rates, like sweet corn, spinach, peas,
okra, snap beans and strawberries
perish more quickly than those with low
respiratory rates, such as apples, beets,
potatoes and watermelon.
Proper harvesting and storage
conditions, such as when the food
is picked, how its cleaned and what
temperature and level of humidity
its stored in can reduce the rate of
respiration water loss but this only
slows the rate of deterioration and
extends shelf life to a degree. So buying
produce at a farmers market, a day
or two after harvest rather than two
weeks post-picking assures optimum
produce quality. When you limit the
time between picking the produce and
eating it, you arent compromising favor
and nutrition, said Richard.

3. REDUCTION OF CARBON
FOOTPRINT. For an increasingly
eco conscious society, were wasteful

Ask questions. Farmers are happy to answer questions, even if theres a crowd. This is his or her

opportunity to tell you about the products you see and establish a relationship with you.
Look around before buying, at least until you have the lay of the land. Think through

whats important to you when buying. Do you want only products that are organic, those that are as cheap
as possible, the biggest and best looking? If you take a spin around the market before settling on your choice, youll be able to hone
in on your priorities. After a few trips to market, youll be able to narrow your vendor preferences to one or two who consistently have
what you need at an affordable price.
Bring your own bag. Vendors will happily supply bags for your items, but its great to do your part for the environment with a
few mesh or breathable cloth bags for your produce.
Bring cash. While many vendors accept credit or debit purchases and checks, farmers market vendors are small business
operators, and as such, may not want to invest in equipment and accounts that allow them to take credit cards. And many vendors are
reluctant to accept checks, unless theyre local.
Be early. The old adage the early bird gets the worm holds true for farmers markets. Its impossible for vendors to predict market
attendance or interest in a particular item that day, so as the day goes on, he or she may run out of certain items.
Ask whether the produce was picked this morning. Of course you

want to know whether your kale is fresh. But think about it. If the market opens
at 8 a.m., and it took an hour or two to load the truck, an hour for the farmer to
drive to market and an hour or two to set up, at what point in the morning did
he or she have time to pick a several bushels of tomatoes and beans, 100 pints of blueberries, or 10 dozen eggs? Even if it is a small
market, it takes many hours and often many hands to harvest. Most farmers market produce is picked a day or two before market,
stored in ideal conditions, then loaded in the cool of morning to go to market.
Ask for early sales. Farmers markets have certain hours for a reason. It takes a long time for farmers to unload their products
and set up their booths. Early sales may prevent your farmer to be ready for the opening of the market.
Ask for a special deal at the end of market. Farmers markets arent Priceline.com. Your hard working farmer has set the
price needed in order to make a living and pay the bills. Leftover produce is typically sold to restaurants or given to a food bank, so
you neednt worry it will go to waste. That said, if you are buying produce in bulk for canning or freezing, some farmers will cut you
a break.

production, according to a 2010 report
by the Department of Agricultures
Economic Research Service. The report
indicated that food related energy use
is growing at a rapid pace as the food
industry relies on more energy intensive
technologies to produce food.
Food distribution is a large of the
problem, too. In a University of Iowa
study, researchers found that the
distance conventionally sold food
traveled was an average of 27 times
farther than that of local foods sold
at a farmers market. So it makes
sense to reduce the amount of food
miles, or the carbon impact associated
with moving food long distances in
refrigerated trucks, said Greenberger.

4. SUPPORT OF LOCAL
ECONOMY/WAY OF LIFE. Who
doesnt want to support their local
businesses and communities? Buying
locally not only supports the small
farmer, but nearby businesses. Farmers
markets have been shown to increase
spending at neighboring shops and
stores; one study found that as many
as 63 percent of patrons at farmers
markets planned to do other errands in
the area that day.
And if you live in a rural area where
agriculture is a way of life and the
heart of the community, you can
preserve both farmland and the way of
life of those living on the land. Many
previously agricultural communities
have given way to urban development
when small farmers have been unable
to make a living by competing with
large scale farms that practice industrial
agriculture.
5. EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.
When is the last time you were able to
ask a big box supermarket associate
what a particular vegetable is, how it
was grown and processed, what the
nutritional value is and how to cook
it? Chances are that you wont get the
answer. But at a farmers market, said
Lichtenwalner, you can interact face to
face with the grower and ask questions.
While there is no guarantee (other
than if the grower is Certifed Organic
or Certifed Naturally Grown) that the
farmer grows organically, at least you
can ask what types of herbicides and
pesticides are used on the food, what
the animals are fed and how the food
or meat is processed. Farmers markets

have varying rules about whether farm


vendors may sell food that has not been
grown on that farm, but most have a
stipulation that if the farmer is reselling
food grown on another farm, he or she
must have a written statement to that
effect and also should be able to tell
you how that food is grown.
You can challenge yourself to get
outside of your food preference comfort
zone by asking questions about food
that is unfamiliar to you, too and
trying it. Ask a farmer about what they
eat among the produce on the stand,
and youre in for a long discussion
about food, said Lichtenwalner.
Most farmers will tell you that theyve
tried everything that they sell. And
many can give you a sample, even a
recipe or two for preparing your fnds.

6. UNIQUE PRODUCTS. It doesnt


pay for large supermarkets or chain
stores like Wal-Mart to carry unusual
fruits and vegetables; they are able
to offer low prices by buying the most
commonly purchased foods in bulk. But
at the farmers market youre likely to
see unusually colored produce like blue
potatoes, lavender caulifower, black
Spanish radishes, blonde cucumbers,
and white beets, to name just a few.

And youll see unusual items that small


farmers enjoy growing in order to
attract customers. Things like kalettes,
a cross between kale and Brussels
sprouts, or Mexican sour gherkins, one
inch cukettes with a sweet cucumber
favor and tangy citrus twist.

7. ADDED VALUE. When you think


of a farmers market, its likely youre
thinking primarily of produce. But youll
also fnd, depending upon the market,
jams and jellies, honey, maple syrup,
milk, eggs, meat, cheese, fsh, breads,

Watemelo Salad with Grilled Avocado Sauce

Serves 8

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

FOR SAUCE:
2 large ripe avocados
Juice of 1 lime
Zest of 1 lemon
Juice of 1 lemon
1 medium jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
2 Tbs champagne vinegar
4 basil leaves
10 mint leaves
1 Tbs honey
cup greek yogurt
tsp white pepper
tsp sea salt
3 Tbs watermelon juice or water

FOR SAUCE:
Heat grill to high heat. Slice avocados in half, lengthwise,
remove seed. Using a large spoon, scoop out whole
avocado halves. Place on hot grill, at side down, and
grill about 3 minutes or until grill marks show clearly on
avocado esh. Turn and grill an additional 3 minutes or
until grill marks show clearly. Remove from heat and set
aside.
In a food processor or blender, combine grilled avocado
and remaining ingredients for sauce. Blend until smooth.
Refrigerate until ready to use. Makes about 2 cups.
For thinner sauce, add watermelon juice or water in 1
tablespoon increments.

FOR SALAD:
medium seedless watermelon (about 7 cups)
reserve cup juice for the sauce
1 to 1 pints yellow cherry or grape tomatoes
medium red onion, thinly sliced
1 large cucumber, quartered lengthwise and
sliced into 1 chunks
cup pistachios

FOR SALAD:
In a large mixing bowl, toss together watermelon,
tomatoes, red onion, cucumber and pistachios.
Divide among serving plates and drizzle with Grilled
Avocado Sauce. Refrigerate any remaining sauce for up to
4 days. Sauce can also be used on chicken or as a dipping
sauce to vegetables and fruits.

Vitamin E

How it works: Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant in

How it works: Though it is probably the most


popular antioxidant around and foods rich in this
nutrient are plentiful, studies report that adults in
the United States still arent getting enough vitamin
C in their diets. The body needs vitamin C to make
collagen and it is essential for wounds to heal properly.
Vitamin C also has super immune-boosting properties,
protecting the body from all types of diseases.
Some studies show that vitamin C can help prevent
upper respiratory infections in endurance athletes
and reduce the duration of a cold up to a few days,
but other studies have shown no beneft when tested
against a placebo.
The RDA for adult males is 90 mg/day, which you
should fnd in a good multivitamin.

Vitamin D

How it works: According to leading experts, vitamin


D defciency has become a major problem. The major
source of this vital nutrient is sun exposure, which has
been deemed more of a risk due to the threat of skin
cancer. The main role of vitamin D is to help the body
absorb calcium to strengthen bones and prevent bone
loss. Other studies have linked low vitamin D levels to
weight gain, symptoms of depression
and issues below the belt such as
low sperm motility and erectile
dysfunction.
The RDA for vitamin D is 600
International Units (IU) per day.

more if a blood test has
indicated that you have a

Endurance Sports
Researchers from the Universidad de Alicante, Spain
conducted a literature review on the current state of the
effect of consumption of dietary BCAA supplements in
endurance sports and its effects on muscle damage,
athletic performance, central fatigue, anabolic signals
during recovery and immune system response published
in any country until May 2014. Out of 330 studies
identifed, 14 met the inclusion criteria. The sports
that we found in the studies were running, cycling,
combining cycling and running, Olympic distance
triathlon and one study included 2 groups of athletes
(Olympic distance triathletes and runners). Researchers
concluded that there is a lesser degree of pain and
muscle damage, less perceived exertion and mental
fatigue, greater anabolic response in recovery period
and improved immune response when supplemented
with BCAAs. (Salinas-Garcia ME, Martinez-Sanz
JM, Urdampilleta A, et al. Nutr Hosp. 2014 Nov

Ginger Safe and Efective in


Treatment of Osteoarthritis

The aim of this study was to assess the clinical safety


and effcacy of oral ginger for symptomatic treatment of
osteoarthritis (OA) by carrying out a systematic literature
search followed by meta-analyses on selected studies.
Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs)
comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients
aged >18 years. Outcomes were reduction in pain and
reduction in disability. Five trials (593 patients)
were included for meta-analyses. A statistically
signifcant pain reduction was found and a
statistically signifcant reduction in disability
were seen, both in favor of ginger. Patients
given ginger were more than twice as likely
to discontinue treatment compared to
placebo. Researchers concluded that
ginger to be safe and effcacious for

Researchers from the School of Kinesiology, Auburn University examined


the effects of different dietary protein sources on skeletal muscle, adipose
tissue and satiety-related markers. Wistar rats were given either a) whey
protein concentrate; b) 70:30 whey-to-egg protein; c) 50:50 whey-to-egg
protein; d) 30:70 whey-to-egg protein; and or e) water with no protein
as a fasting control. Skeletal muscle analyses revealed that compared to
the controls a signifcant increase in mTOR signaling and muscle protein
synthesis in all protein groups with the greatest increase
in the whey protein concentrate group. Researcher
concluded that higher amounts of whey versus
egg protein stimulates the greatest posttreatment anabolic skeletal muscle response,
though test proteins with higher amounts
of whey protein more favorably affected
post-treatment markers related to adipose

Losing weight isnt easy. Choosing a fatburning supplement can be even harder.

Fat burning supplements can be
broken down into three categories:

Stimulant-Based Fat Burners


A stimulant based fat burner will give

Lipolysis: Epinephrine and


norepinephrine are chemical messengers
that are part of the sympathetic
nervous system. These hormones are
responsible for the bodys response
mechanism, called fght or fight.
During periods of intense emotional or
physical stress, or when stimulant-based
fat burners are ingested, a reactionary
chain of biochemical events take place
in the body, hence the fght or fight
response.

Fight or Flight?
What does that mean, from a
biological standpoint? As a part of the
evolutionary process, we are hard-wired
by Mother Nature to able to react and
survive stressful, dangerous situations.
During times of extreme physical or
emotional stress, the adrenal fght
or fight hormones, epinephrine and
nor-epinephrine, are injected from our
adrenal glands into the bloodstream.
These chemicals target multiple body
cells, causing an adaptive excitatory
state.
For example, think of ancient man,
our caveman cousins. If our ancient

Secondly, stimulant-based fat
burners enable us to exercise more
productively, for longer or more intense
sessions than we might otherwise
be able to. Research has shown
that controlled use of stimulantbased fat-burners can aid in exercise
performance, and increase calorie
expenditure both during exercise
sessions and throughout the day by
supporting increased physical activity.
Some examples of sympathomimetic
or stimulant-based ingredients
commonly found in fat loss products
today include synephrine, coleus
forskohlii, green tea, theobromine,

from our adipocytes. Fatty acids can

A thermogenic fat burner contains


ingredients that will raise the
bodys core temperature a small but
signifcant amount (thermo=heat,
genesis=creation of). Increasing the
bodys core temperature is a complex
task that typically involves supporting
the bodys major thermogenic
hormone, thyroid hormone. Increasing
the bodys core temperature will speed
up blood fow, increase your metabolic
rate (and calorie expenditure), and
improve circulation. You will also
likely sweat like you have never sweat
before!

This catch-all category includes any


of the many products that can impact
the energy-processing system in the
body, which governs our ability to either
store body fat or lose it. The storage
of excess energy in the form of fat
deposited into our adipocytes and
the counterbalance of this in the form
