Project Proposal

From this project, I personally want to achieve the creation of a strong character driven
piece that is atmospheric and focuses strongly on both narrative and storytelling.
Additionally, I would like to focus on my clean up skills as well as some inbetweening, as this
is a section of animation I have not really explored before in group work and I am drawn to
the thought of fulfilling this role. I am excited to experiment more with Photoshop
animation as I have only previously explored with this once before. I am ready to embrace
the challenge of animating elements and believe that I am part of a strong group that will be
able to produce a high quality piece of animation that we will be proud to present at the
end of our final year.
Our aim was to create an atmospheric piece of animation combining a number of different
art styles we attained throughout our university degree.
Taking influences from the ancient Egyptian culture and history which we thoroughly
researched in order to create a believable animation, by keeping it true to the traditions of
Egyptian culture and reflecting this in our animation we aim to draw in an Egyptian fan
based audience.
Our target audience is PG (parental guidance) as there will be some slightly scary scenes for
young children although we plan to educate younger viewers on the mythology and
traditions of the ancient Egyptian culture. We aim to achieve this through the use of our
young protagonist Safiya as she is a relatable character.
This is a coming of age story, as this young heroine is on journey of self discovery as she is
trying to learn to control her dangerous magical powers therefore, teaching the importance
of responsibility and maturity in certain situations when faced with danger. In order to do
this we aim to create a strong character driven piece using 2D animation.
We plan to do the animation in flash and bring it in to Photoshop for final effects, texturing
and touch ups, we also plan to bring certain scenes in to after effects for final compositing
and rendering.
We want our environments to look traditionally painted although we plan to use digital
programs in order to achieve this.
We aim to focus strongly on the colour palette as it was previously pointed out that we
were using a limited colour range and failed to take the audience on a visual journey
therefore, we needed to digress and create a more varied colour range in order to change
the mood of certain scenes when necessary. We aim to do this by expanding our colour
palette and creating a theme using complementary colours such as purple and yellow as we

had created previous concepts unknowingly with this palette and we were pleased with the
aesthetics.
We wish to create a stylised look to our animation by not restricting our colours to the harsh
lines of the usual cleaned up look, we hope this will give it a painterly almost water colour
essence.
We have never animated the elements therefore our aim is to overcome the challenge of
creating a believable simulation of magical sand and water as a substantial amount of our
animation takes place around an Egyptian river and of course our protagonist has the ability
to manipulate the sand.
