The history of your favorite pizza began in 1958, with the vision and the passion of two
brothers, from Wichita, Kansas. Being students, they had to borrow $600 from their
mother to open a tiny pizza restaurant: the very first Pizza Hut.
Fifty years later, with more than 12,000 restaurants in more than 90 countries, Pizza Hut
is the first choice for pizza lovers and still remains true to its founding beliefs: that
because we love pizza and care about our customers, we have a responsibility to offer
great products and service!
It is a good philosophy. And in Greece - a country that knows a thing or two about
philosophy - it is no surprise to see that Pizza Hut has a strong presence, with 16
restaurants in Athens.

2.History of Pizza Hut

History
of
Pizza
Hut
The history of Pizza hut began in 1958, when what is now the world's largest
pizza franchise was born. Pizza Hut is the world's largest pizza restaurant
chain and is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc., whose restaurants total
approximately
34,000
restaurants.
The whole history of pizza hut has been achieved through innovation, but the
history of pizza hut really took off with amalgamation into the Pepsi
Company and more aggressive marketing techniques especially in the take
out
market.
It was founded in 1958 by Dan and Frank Carney. Their friend suggested
opening a pizza parlor they agreed with the idea that it could prove
successful, so that they borrowed $600 form their mother to start a business.
At that time the original Pizza hut was at Wichita State University with 25
seats.
When making the sign for the restaurant they only had enough room for nine
letters and because they made pizza's they wanted pizza in the name, that
only left 3 letters and because the restaurant looked like a hut they named it
Pizza
Hut.
Their first franchise was opened in 1959 in Topeka, Kansas. In 1977, Pizza Hut
was
acquired
by
Pepsico.
On April 1, 2008, Pizza Hut sent emails to customers advertising that they
now offer pasta items on their menu. The email (and similar advertising on

the company's website) stated "Pasta so good we've changed our name to
'Pasta Hut'."

3. A Brief History of Pizza Hut

I was recently in Wichita, Kansas, where Pizza Hut was founded, so I thought I should
take a moment to share what I learned about perhaps the nations most recognizable
pizza brand. Brothers Dan and Frank Carney borrowed $600 to finance their pizza
dreams, and the first Pizza Hut opened in Wichita on May 31, 1958. The name Pizza Hut
was actually chosen as they only had room for nine characters and spaces on the sign
they purchased. Pizza Hut was incorporated in Kansas in 1959, and the first franchise
unit opened in Topeka, Kansas. The basic freestanding design of Pizza Hut restaurants,
which sadly seems to be going away now, was adopted in 1964 although the familiar red
roof was not put in place until 1969. By 1966, a year after their first television commercial
aired, their first home office was built in Wichita to handle the pizza of a chain that had
grown to over 145 Pizza Hut restaurants. Amazingly, by 1971 Pizza Hut had become the
number one pizza restaurant chain in the world in terms of both sales and numbers of
restaurants, and, in 1972, it became publicly traded on the New York Stock exchange
and went international by opening a restaurant in Costa Rica. Above is a picture of the
original Pizza Hut building that has since been relocated to Wichita State Universitys
campus as the Carney brothers both attended school there, and below is a picture of the
plaque attached to Pizza Hut Number One. As it states, their $600 investment was
eventually sold to PepsiCo in 1977 for $300,000,000 (not a bad return on investment).
