1.0

PURPOSE

To provide general guidelines for ensuring that work is conducted in a safe manner.

2.0

POLICY

It is the policy of Nu-Iron Unlimited to create the safest work environment possible for
all employees, contractors and visitors.

3.0

PROCEDURES

3.1

Plant Safety

1.

Employees must use protective safety equipment provided by the company.

2.

Report all unsafe job conditions to your Supervisor. These can include defects in
lighting, equipment, floors, tools, and machines.

3.

Report all injuries, no matter how slight, to your Supervisor and the HSE
Department immediately.

4.

Use and maintain properly, all assigned personal protective equipment. Safety
glasses, hearing protection and hard hat shall be worn in all plant manufacturing
areas. Special eye protection must be worn where required and respiratory
equipment is to be worn and maintained as directed.

5.

Loose clothing, torn clothing, or wire belts can be hazardous and will not be worn
around machinery. Also, with long hair, hair protective equipment must be worn.

6.

Jewellery will not be worn in operation or maintenance areas.

7.

Know the locations of fire exits, alarm boxes, and fire extinguishers.

8.

Never block or place material in front of, against, or on top of fire apparatus,
sprinkler valve houses, electrical equipment, and control valves. Do not obstruct
fire lanes, extinguishers, aisles, exits, and stairways.

9.

Return fire extinguishers to the designated areas after use. Never return a used
extinguisher to the rack before it is refilled or recharged.

10.

Strictly observe the "NO SMOKING" rule where posted.

11.

Lift properly to avoid strains. Bend knees, keep body erect, and then push upward
with legs. Use lifting equipment or ask for help when lifting or moving large loads.

12.

Stack material safely, always using proper blocking and never exceed an authorized
height.

13.

Do not go on a scaffold without first checking it for stability, strength and proper
work platform including hand rails, also use a safety belt and lanyard.

14.

Wash hands after using paints, solvents, chemicals, or other toxic materials.

15.

Never start or operate machinery, equipment, or vehicles unless authorized.

16.

Never run in any part of the plant, except in emergencies.

17.

Only authorized operators are permitted to use lift trucks and mobile equipment.
Riders are not permitted on any crane, hook, lift, cable, sling, platform truck, or
fork truck.

18.

Never drop materials from overhead.

19.

Use extreme caution while working around suspended loads and never work under
one.

20.

Do not use portable ladders unless they are of proper length and equipped with
safety shoes. Return them to the proper storage area, and report any defects to your
Supervisor.

21.

Welding equipment is to be used only by qualified welders. Welders must remove


flammable or combustible materials in the area before welding and always have a
fire extinguisher with them when welding.

22.

Never look at welding arc unless wearing appropriate eye protection equipment.

23.

Chain or securely tie down all compressed gas, oxygen ammonia, or other
cylinders. Use valve protection caps when cylinders are moved from place to place
or put in storage.

24.

Use compressed air only as directed and never on yourself or others. Low pressure
nozzle must not be removed or tampered with.

25.

When grinding on stationary grinding equipment, tool rest must be adjusted to a


maximum opening of 1/8" between the rest and the wheel.

26.

The operator of a machine must have all safeguards in place prior to starting.

27.

Observe safety load requirements on all equipment.

28.

When new equipment is installed, all personnel who will be working with the
equipment will be trained in its setup, adjustments, and the safe work practices
involved in its operation.

29.

Only authorized persons may enter electrical equipment areas, such as, power
houses or substations.

30.

Only authorized persons are permitted to repair or trouble shoot electrical


equipment.

31.

Before setting in motion any machinery or equipment you are authorized to operate,
make certain the other employees are clear of the equipment. Equipment tagged
with "DO NOT OPERATE" sign is not to be operated until the person signing the
tag has removed it.

32.

Electrical controls must be locked in the "OFF" position and "DO NOT OPERATE"
signs attached before entering any equipment for the purpose of set-up, cleaning,
oiling, or mechanical repair_ Where electrical controls cannot be locked, fuses must
be pulled.

33.

Never take short cuts over or under dangerous places or equipment.

34.

Employees may not wear clothing contaminated with work place materials outside
of the plant.

35.

Food or beverage may be consumed only in offices, lunchrooms, and outside eating
area, or other designated areas.

36.

Employees may enter a confined space by permit only.

37.

Vehicles wheels shall be chocked during loading and unloading operations.

38.

Employees taking medication or suffering from a common illness that may affect
their ability to perform their work shall report that information to their supervisor.

39.

Obey the plant speed limit of 15 km/hour.

40.

Supervisors shall be responsible for the general housekeeping in the work areas.

41.

Employees are responsible for cleaning up after their work activity.

42.

After completing a job, remove tools, scrap, or materials. Tear down all temporary
scaffolds; remove nails or bend them down.

43.

When a new process or chemical is being used, all Managers, Supervisors, and
Employees involved will be trained in the hazards, signs of trouble, and what steps
to take in the event of an emergency.

3.2

Office Safety

1.

Walk, never run.

2.

Keep aisles and walkway clear.

3.

When using stairs, always use handrails.

4.

Keep stairs clutter free.

5.

Keep filing cabinets closed, unless using them. Never leave filing cabinets open.
This could cause severe injury.

6.

Use proper lifting techniques while lifting boxes, etc. Keep back straight, bend
knees, and lift with your legs. This will save your back and aggravation.

7.

Never use damaged extension cords. Use well insulated cord.

1.

Always use well maintained machinery (Adding machines, Typewriter, etc.).

2.

Protect your eyes from carbon paper residue, liquid paper, or ink. Always wash
your hands after handling these products.

3.

Take breaks to rest your eyes from VDT (Video Display Terminal) Strain.

4.

Keep combustible materials at least eight inches away from appliances like coffee
makers, hot plates, space heaters, etc.

5.

Never walk on wet floors. Keep floors free of water and other wet products.

6.

Use properly adjusted chairs and never sit on the edge of a chair.

7.

Do not store office or other materials on cabinet top. Material will fall down.

8.

Do not lean back in your chair, it might tip over with you.

9.

Always use a step ladder when materials are too high to reach.

10.

Do not use window cleaner or other water based cleaners on electrical or electronic
equipment, such as, computers fax machines.

3.3

Visitor Safety

The safety of everyone who visits our site is of utmost importance to us. Persons who are
not familiar with our site and our safe rules and practices can get themselves into an
accident and be seriously injured.
The guidelines below are intended to keep visitors/family safe.
1.

Any visitor needing to enter the compound must check in with the main gate
security and obtain a visitor pass which must be displayed at all times.

2.

Visitors will be required to undergo visitor orientation, prior to entry onto the plant
site. Visitors will be required to abide by all site rules while on site.

3.

The speed limit on the site is 15 km/hour. All traffic signs must be obeyed.

4.

Visitors to the plant will be required to wear the relevant PPE. The minimum
requirement will be safety helmet, safety glasses, ear plugs, steel toed shoes.
Depending on the area visited, flame retardant clothing may be necessary.

5.

Visitors must be escorted by a Nu-Iron person.

6.

Security will ensure that at the beginning of each shift that their radio is working.
New security personnel must complete orientation and meet with the Shipping &
Logistics Manager the day before starting duty.

7.

In emergency situations, where offsite assistance is required, security will notify the
supervisor that the ambulance/fire truck is here and an employee will lead them in
to the emergency site. An updated Emergency Contact Numbers sheet will be kept
at security.

8.

In the case of an emergency and evacuation is necessary, all visitors will assembly
in the parking lot.

9.

Employees should notify security when family members are expected and at what
number they can be reached.
