graduate was recently recognized among
the top scientists in the country.
Jonathan Moerdyk, 28, was recently
named one of the 30 Under 30 in science by
Forbes magazine. Moerdyk was recognized
by the magazine for research in developing
new classes of carbon-based compounds,
namely diamidocarbenes, to imitate the
properties of metals.
For nearly five years, Moerdyk analyzed
the carbon-based compounds while in
graduate school at the University of Texas
at Austin. One of the goals of the research
was to develop possible alternatives to metals such as rhodium, platinum or palladium, as well as to uncover new reactivity, he
said.
While attending the University of Texas,
Moerdyk was also invited to attend the 63rd
annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting
dedicated to Chemistry in Lindau, Germany.
Moerdyk was among 625 undergraduate
and graduate students from 78 countries
who received the opportunity to interact
with more than two-dozen Nobel Laureates from around the world. Among the scientists Moerdyk met was Nobel Laureate
Robert Grubbs. Since 2002, the American
chemist has received the Tolman Award,
Linus Pauling Award and Nobel Prize in
Chemistry.
My advisor in graduate school had
worked for Robert Grubbs so having a
chance to meet him was very special, Moerdyk said. Overall, it was just a wonderful opportunity to be invited to a gathering
of scientists from all over the world.
Prior to being featured in Forbes, the
Reed City High School graduate was named
in the 30 Under 30 Scientific American list.
Moerdyks love for chemistry began during his freshman year at Hope College
alongside chemistry faculty member, Dr.
Jason Gillmore. Moerdyk had worked with
Gillmore to analyze and develop light-sensitive molecules.

Jonathan Moerdyk,

named one of the
30 Under 30 in
science by Forbes
magazine. Moerdyk
was recognized by
the magazine for
research in developing new classes
of carbon-based
compounds, namely
diamidocarbenes,
to imitate the properties of metals.
I took organic chemistry in college and
really enjoyed it, Moerdyk said. That was
the point where I knew I wanted to make it
a career.
Gillmore said when he first met Moerdyk,
he was a freshman student interested in
one day becoming a high school chemistry
teacher. But during their three and a half
years of conducting research, Gillmore
said Moerdyk became a sponge, constantly
absorbing new information. It was also the
longest Gillmore spent working alongside a
student.
He was just a superstar in the classroom
and in the laboratory, Gillmore said. In
my opinion, he is one of the top 3 students
in my 11 years at Hope College.
Growing up, Moerdyk said hed dreamed
of becoming a professional baseball player.
Moerdyks years playing baseball at Reed
City High School eventually led the Paris
native to serve as pitcher on Hopes baseball team.
I think its almost every little boys
dream to become a professional athlete,
Moerdyk said.

In the fall of 2014, Moerdyks chemistry

talent led to an assistant professor of chemistry position at Seton Hill University in
Pennsylvania.
Gillmore said he believes its Moerdyks
love of research that has inspired him to
make great strides in the field of chemistry.
Here is a guy who turned down accepted letters at Harvard and MIT to pursue a
project he loved, Gillmore said. I believe
Jonathan is a scientist whose work will one
day change the world.
As for Moerdyk, he plans to continue analyzing the reactivity of carbon-based molecules and each day teaches a classroom of
students who remind him of his younger
self.
There are times when I speak to a student and I think that sounds like something I would have said, Moerdyk said.
Moerdyk said he is excited for the future
of his research. In five years, he hopes to
continue having the opportunity to teach
exceptional students at Seton Hill University and involve them in new research projects.

REED CITY The Reed City

Rotary has established a $1,000
scholarship for Reed City High
School students studying the
skilled trades.
The scholarship is available
to graduating seniors or recent
graduates of Reed City High
School wishing to attend an accredited vocational-technical
school or University. Certificate,

associate and higher degrees

in vocational areas along with
nursing and pharmacy are eligible.
The scholarship funds were
provided to the Rotary by an
anonymous local donor who
directed the scholarship be used
for students studying the trades.
We are pleased to offer his opportunity to local youth who are
interested to further their studies in the skilled trades, nursing
and pharmacy vocations, Ron

Marek, Reed City Rotary past

president, said.
Marek said there has been a
significant need to fill skilledtrade jobs in Northern Michigan.
One of the major difficulties is finding young people
who want to fill jobs in skilled
trades, Marek said. Hopefully,
this scholarship will boost interest.
Marek said the Reed City
Rotary hopes to award an annual $1,000 scholarship to those

interested in the skilled trades

and vocational careers for years
to come. Therefore, the Rotary is
welcoming any donations to the
program from private individuals and local businesses.
The entry deadline for applications is June 15. The top
candidate will be selected and
announced by July 15.
For questions concerning
the scholarship or to receive a
scholarship application, contact
Marek at 231-388-4082.

Decoration Day in 1885

a memorable occasion for area vets
By Shanna Avery
Special to the Weekly Voice

Decoration Day was

formed after the Civil War
to commemorate the soldiers who died in the war
and was a very important
occasion for the Civil War
vets who settled in the
area.
In 1885, 20 years after the
Civil War ended, the vets
went all out in commemorating their comrades.
G.A.R. Posts from several
different towns, including
Reed City, Hersey, Chase,
Luther, Tustin, Bear Lake,
Pierport and other locations, were invited to Manistee to observe and celebrate the occasion with the
James F. McGinley Post.
The Manistee Standard
reported, An excursion
from Reed City under
command of W. A. Higbe,
consisting of 5 coaches,
will arrive in the city today,
to assist in the Memorial
exercises. May 30, 1885
The following is a detailed account of the occasion, as well as a stirring
plea on behalf of vets that
were still living, printed
in the June 6, 1885 issue
of the Manistee Standard,
Memorial Day opened
cloudy and cool, with rain,
which undoubtedly kept
hundreds at home who
otherwise would have attended. At 10 a.m. the boats
from the north came in
crowded with comrades
from Bear Lake, Pierport,
Onekama and that region,
and were met at the dock
by G. A. R. of Manistee and
escorted to Maple street,
where the entire procession crossed the bridge to
meet the special train from
the south and east.
At 11:30 the train arrived with seven passenger
cars crowded to their utmost capacity. There were
some 60 waiting at Chase
who could not get on, and
the train was obliged to
run by Baldwin because
there was no more room.
The comrades from Chase,
Reed City, Luther, Tustin
and other places were well
represented with wives
and friends.
The Reed City Band led
the way to German Hall
where about 400 partook
of an excellent dinner. At 2
oclock p.m. the procession
was formed on First Street
led by the Light Guard of
this city and the bands
under charge of Gen. Hart,
and composed of all the
societies of the city, the G.

A. R. of Manistee and visiting comrades, carriages

and citizens generally,
and marched east on First
street north to River and
down River street to the
bridge, thence to the Oak
Grove cemetery where the
decoration ceremonies
and general program was
carried out as herefore
published.
The graves were most
elaborately and beautifully
decorated. After speeches,
songs and music the lines
were reformed and all returned to the city, where a
most bountiful repast was
served at German Hall
under charge of the committee.
The afternoon was cool
and pleasant, and the occasion was a most delightful
reunion, and general time
of congratulation and enjoyment, long to be remembered.
Comrade Henderson
and others decorated the
soldiers graves in the cemetery south of the city in
the forenoon. None were
neglected. As an occasion
for reunion and general
decoration of graves, we
trust the day will always be
observed; but in observing
it we should not forget that
it is the living and not the
dead that require aid. It
may help us and cultivate
humanity and patriotism
thus to commemorate our
fallen comrades; but the
time to help comrades is
before they take their last
rest.
At Oak Grove Cemetery
there are seven graves of
fallen comrades, who have
been removed from the
Potters field, where they
had been buried in charity,
friendless and poor, and
many of them had died in
the poor house in want,
and penury, and alone.
A few of the friendly
faces that gathered around
their graves Saturday
would have been exceedingly comforting in their
last moments. A few of the
dollars spent decorating
their graves would have
brought sunshine and
happiness to their lonely
coughs of woe and want.
Let us not forget that the
good time to help comrades
is this side of their graves.
Commemorating the dead
is well, but comforting the
living is better.
After allowing old soldiers to starve, suffer and
finally die in poor houses,
and rattling their bones
over the stones, nay

worse than that, after suffering a law to remain on

the statute book for selling
paupers to be cut up at
medical college, (University of Michigan) at $15 a
head, it seems grim mockery to parade around their
graves with muffled drums
and funeral march. But if
these reunions and decorations shall serve to cultivate larger charity, more
brotherly love, and a civilization that shall sweep all
grave robbing license from
our statute books, then
indeed the work will be
worth the effort.
A beautiful arch of
evergreens and flowers
spanned the gateway at
the cemetery, while the
words welcome comrades
in evergreen letters was
swung across the street at
Mr. Mamerows, near the
depot. The word welcome
also decorated German
Hall, and evergreens and
flowers were tastefully arranged nearly all over the
city. Four beautiful floral
designs, together with several hundred button-hole
bouquets were presented to
the G.A.R. and Light Guard
by the ladies of Manistee.
In the Evening that
popular amusement palace, the Maple St. Rink,
was filled to its full seat-

ing, standing, and skating capacity, by a happy

throng of young and old.
The exercises were all
well rendered, the Light
Guard and Broom Brigade
acquitting themselves in a
manner to do credit to both
companies and Capt. Baldwin. The swinging of the
May Pole was particularly
fine. The remarks by Gen.
Cutcheon were timely, being a review of the Manistee Light Guard from their
organization nine years
ago to the present time.
The bayonet exercise,
under direction of Lieut.
Nims, was omitted, by
reason of the weariness
of those who were to take
part in the same, having
been on the march nearly
the entire afternoon, but
Capt. Baldwin wished the
Standard to state that at
some future date a free
exhibition of bayonet practice will be given to our citizens. The rink was tastefully decorated in bunting
and evergreens, presenting
a very fine appearance.
We learn from the committe that there were 875
fed on Memorial Day in
this city. They used 208
pies, 271 pounds of cake
and nearly 103 pounds of
canned goods, and other
things in proportion.

Addition No. 6

On May 11, 2015 the

Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District
(MOISD) Board of Education voted to improve
the Education Center, a
facility serving the most
severely disabled K-12
students in Mecosta and
Osceola counties.
One of the most important functions of the
MOISD is to serve special
needs students on our
main campus located over
by the National Guard
Armory building in Big
Rapids. The Education
Center students are bussed
in from all corners of our
area to this specialized

facility.
The Ed Center was
initially built in 1979 and
opened with a small population of SMI (Severely
Mentally Impaired), TMI
(Trainable Mentally Impaired), and a room of preprimary students.
In 1981 an addition
was added to provide
more space for a growing
population and additional
impairments. In 1990, another two additions were
added a small multipurpose room and a wing
on the South end of the
building. In 1998 the fifth
addition was added on for
more student services

the North Annex.

Because of overcrowding, the late 1990s saw a
move of a transition
program to downtown Big
Rapids (on the same side
as the movie theater); a
program designed to connect students to everyday
living skills. In 2004 the
program was split into
two transition groups and
moved across the street
into a remodeled building
for students up to 26 years
old.
In 2009, one of the transition programs moved
back to a remodeled North
Annex of the Ed Center. In
2012, our Early Childhood

Student Athlete
Of the Week
Meet Sam Bressler
Evart High School, senior

special needs program

moved out of the Ed Center and over to the newlyleased Eastwood Early
Childhood Center operated
by the MOISD.
The current Ed Center
houses students from 5 to
26 years old with programs
for Moderately and Severely Cognitively Impaired
and two special Resource
Rooms.
The new additions and
remodeling this summer
will upgrade and add new
boilers, a new cafeteria,
and attach a new front office entrance for security
purposes.
Remodeled portions will

widen some interior doors,

remodel a special bathroom, and add city water.
The goal is try to complete
the project before the snow
flies in December; any
sooner will be a bonus.
The dollars for this project were saved over a period of 10 years by trimming
budgets, planning ahead,
and keeping promises to
staff from times gone by.
We are excited for these
new additions and the
more positive learning
and safe environment it
will create for our special
needs students; look for an
Open House later this year.
