SUMMER GUIDE
Letter From the Editor
Today would the last Rundown until August, but instead Im doing a
Summer Guide what to watch for in politics and history over the
SUMMER!!!!
Have a good summer,
Gabe Fleisher
Editor, Writer, and Everything Else Imaginable
The Daily Rundown

Elections
Utah GOP Senate Primary On June 26, longtime Republican
Sen. Orrin Hatch will face a primary challenge to the right, former
State Sen. Dan Liljenquist.
Texas GOP Senate Runoff Primary Remember back in late May,
the GOP Texas Senate primary? And remember how nobody quite
got 50%? Well, on July 31, well see wholl prevail Tea Party or
the establishment. The two candidates are Texas Lt. Gov. David

Drewhurst, the establishment candidate, and former Texas

Solicitor Gen. Ted Cruz, from the Tea Party.

Other Politics
SCOTUS decides on Obamacare In late to mid-June, the U.S.
Supreme Court will really decide what to do about President
Obamas health care plan. Keep it? Strike it down? Take away
some of it? Right now, nobody knows what will happen except for
nine robed symbols of justice and fairness. These nine men and
women will tell all SOON!

What to Do
Editors Picks! As you may know, I already visited Boston this
simmer. I visited the newly-renamed Bostons Trails to Freedom,
formerly known as the Freedom Trail. The new name was to
recognize the Black Heritage Trail, which used to be much farther
off the beaten path and less remembered. The new name was
unveiled just recently, on Memorial Day, when Faneuil Hall
reopened, a building that was home to patriots and abolitionists
alike.
I also visited the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and
Museum, also in Boston, for the THIRD TIME! That is a testament
to how fun both of these sites are, and I recommend to anyone
going to Boston!
Other Libraries Theres never a better time to visit our countrys
presidential libraries, the only museums dedicated to specific U.S.
Presidents. 13 of the libraries are administrated by the National

Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which does a

FANTASTIC job! I have visited the Adams, Lincolns FDRs,
Trumans, Kennedys, and Clintons.
All over the summer, the Libraries will be holding special events.
Clinton and George Bushs birthdays both occur in the summer,
August 19 and something respectively, and the libraries will be
holding celebrations then. Admission to Bill Clintons is free on
the day before.
Looking Back 150 Years As you know, The Daily Rundown
celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the
sesquicentennial.
The National Park Service (NPS) is celebrating the anniversary,
too, and you can visit any of their Civil War sites over the summer,
and there will be special events because of the sesquicentennial.
Here you can see a map of all Civil War sites owned by the NPS.
Find on near you and go! ROAD TRIP!

Happy Birthday To
Happy Birthday! Besides George Bush and Bill Clinton, other
historical figures celebrate birthdays through the summer:
June 21 Martha Washington Our first First Lady, Lady
Washington.
June 28 Leon Panetta This man has served as CIA Director,
White House Chief of Staff, Director of the Office of Management
and Budget, and a Congressman, and now he is the U.S. Defense
Secretary.
July 10 George Dallas Although from Philadelphia, this Vice
President is suspected of being Dallas, Texas namesake.

July 11 John Quincy Adams 6th President of the United States,

and also Secretary of State for his predecessor, James Monroe (in
this entity, Adams wrote the MONROE Doctrine.)
July 14 Gerald Ford 38th President of the United States, and
also Richard Nixons 2nd Vice President. He wasnt elected to
either office.
July 17 Elbridge Gerry The U.S. fifth Vice President (serving
under Madison.) Also a Congressman and signer of the Declaration
of Independence and almost-signer of the Constitution (he was a
delegate to the Convention, but he refused to sign it), BUT he is
best remembered for his time as Massachusetts Governor, where
he started the practice of GERRYmandering (where a politician
redistricts to the favor of some political party. Anyways, hes the
namesake of it.)
July 24 John Bryson Since October 2011, the Commerce
Secretary. Just a few days ago, Secy. Bryson suffered a seizure and
got into multiple car accidents.
July 26 George Clinton Our fourth Vice President, one of only
two to serve under multiple Presidents (he was Jefferson and
Madisons Veep). Clinton was also the first Governor of New
York
August 18 -Tim Geithner Currently U.S. Secretary of the
Treasury.

Today (and other days) In

TODAY June 15, 1849 Just 3 months after leaving office,
President James Polk dies.
June 17, 1775 One of the first major battles of the Revolutionary
War, the Battle of Bunker Hill, takes place on Beacon Hill, near
Boston, Massachusetts. While the British win, at the end of the
fight, the patriots have clearly killed many of their number. If the
patriots had had more bullets, some think they could have won.

This is another cool place to visit: the Bunker Hill Monument at

Boston National Historical Park.
June 18, 1812 EXACTLY TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO, the
War of 1812 BEGINS!
LOOKING BACK 150 YEARS - June 19, 1862 President
Lincoln puts an end to slavery in the U.S. territories.
July 1-3, 1863 The famous Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. On
the 3rd, it ends with a Union victory.
July 2, 1881 President James Garfield is shot by a crazy/turneddown office seeker. He wont die until September of the same
year.
July 7, 1898 The U.S. buys Hawaii as a territory (it wont become
a state for a while.) July 7, 1958 60 years later, the other noncontintel U.S. state has exciting news: Alaska becomes a state!
July 12, 1804 After being mortally wounded in a duel with Vice
President Aaron Burr the day before, Alexander Hamilton dies.
July 23, 1885 Former President Ulysses S. Grant dies in New
York, just days after finishing his famous memoirs, creatively
names Memoirs.

GOOD BYE!
HAVE A GREAT
SUMMER
