Minnedosa History
T

he town of Minnedosa is situated in a valley with the

Little Saskatchewan River running through it. The
valley of the Little Saskatchewan River came into
existence some 12,000 years ago. The valley was created as
melt water from the receding glacier ran its course into the
nearby glacial Lake Aggassiz. The rushing waters, at some
points measuring more than a mile wide and 200 feet down
to the rivers edge, carved the valley out of the prairies.
The Little Saskatchewan River forms at Lake Audy in
Riding Mountain National Park, some thirty miles north of
Minnedosa, and flows south into the Assiniboine River at
Brandon.
Archaeological discoveries date the presence of human
habitation back tot he time of the glacier receding with the
finding of Clovis and Folsom points.
The recorded history of this area dates back to the mid
1700s as fur traders began to enter the area. Two small fur

trading posts, one by the Hudsons Bay Company and the

other by the North West Fur Traders Company, were built in
the immediate area in 1818. After the amalgamation of these
two companies in 1821, both posts were abandoned.
The first settlers in the Minnedosa valley arrived in the early
1870s. One of these settlers was John Tanner. He opened a
crossing on the Carlton trail and operated it until 1883 when
the railroad came through. In 1874, the North West Mounted
Police established a post at Tanners Crossing. This site is
marked by a stone cairn which is located along the Beach
Road approximately 1/4 mile east of Main Street.
Pioneers began arriving to this area in great numbers in
the late 1870s and began building homes and businesses.
By 1879 a grist mill had been built. The Manitoba and North
Western Railroad built track to the area in 1883, the same year
that the Town of Minnedosa was incorporated.

Fun Fest

ince 1963, Minnedosa has hosted an unforgettable

summer celebration! Over the years there have been
a number of name changes for this festival but no
matter what you call the current Fun Fest, there is something
special for the whole family.
The festivities kick off with Kiddies Day targeted toward
the children. There are numerous games and activities
planned as well as a Kiddies Parade. During the parade,
many children like to dress up in costumes and decorate
their bikes or wagons to show off to the parade spectators.
The big Fun Fest Parade is held Saturday morning and
features floats, marching bands, animals, vintage cars and
tractors, and pretty much everything else a parade should
have.
Other popular Fun Fest attractions include great food,
social gatherings, dances and many other unique attractions.

A Downtown Street Market and music jam in the park

were introduced in 2010 and proved to be a success which
continues each year.
If you happen to be in the area during the second weekend
in July, be sure to take in some Fun Fest activities. There is
something for every member of the family to enjoy.

W

e hope your visit to Minnedosa is enjoyable and

that during your time in our community you will
not require our emergency services. However,
if you do need emergency assistance, our community is
prepared with a high level of quality services.
Minnedosa is served by a dedicated team of well-trained
emergency responders, whether its firefighters, paramedics
or police.
The Minnedosa Fire Department, located at the corner of
Main Street and 5th Avenue N.W., includes two fire trucks,
a pick-up truck with small pumper unit and a top-of-theline rescue unit, all equipped with the latest rescue tools and
equipment.
If you happen to become ill while visiting Minnedosa,
our community offers a medical clinic, located at 129 2nd
Avenue S.W. (west of the clock tower) Walk-ins are available
beginning at 10 a.m. Afternoon visits are by appointment.
In the event of a medical emergency, our area is served by
a dedicated EMS team of paramedics with fully equipped
ambulances. The Minnedosa District Health Centre is located
on 1st Avenue, S.W., Our health care facility features 27 acute
care rooms and offers public health, lab and x-ray services.
Located just north of the hospital is the local detachment
office of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which serve
our community as part of the Spruce Plains Area RCMP.
Whether you require the assistance of our fire department,
Emergency Medical Services or Police, dial 911 for assistance.

innedosas main tourist attraction is a gem that

many may not realize exists Minnedosa Lake.
The beginnings of this man-made body
of water dates back to 1907 when a group of local men
created the Minnedosa Power Company. The plan was to
construct a dam, spillway, hydro-electric generating station
and lake, which would serve as a reservoir to run the
power turbines and supply electric power to the booming
Town of Minnedosa. Water first flowed over the logs of
the Minnedosa spillway on April 10th, 1912, marking the
birth of our lake. Disaster struck on May 4th, 1948 when
the spillway collapsed causing a major flooding disaster
for downtown Minnedosa. For the three years following
the spillway collapse, the lake remained dry with only the
Little Saskatchewan River meandering through its once
pristine waters. The current spillway was completed in the

early 1950s.
The creation of the lake brought with it a beach,
nearby campground and cottage area, lake front properties
and many recreational and tourism related opportunities.
Over the years, our lake has played host to numerous
water related sporting events and competitions including
Canada Summer Games, Pan Am Games and National
Sprint Championships. In the 1960s Minnedosa was
known as the Waterski Capital of Canada.

Minnedosa Cafe. Owner Asteria Kirita attended college in
nearby Brandon and decided to honour her Manitoba friends
by naming her business after Minnedosa.

hen visiting Minnedosa you will

most likely hear a wailing siren
at certain times during the day.
Do not be alarmed, the siren sounds three
times a day at 8 a.m., 12 noon, and 6 p.m.
The siren is also used in certain
emergency situations. If you hear the siren
wail at numerous intervals, it is alerting
local fire department volunteers of a fire
or emergency call in which their assistance
is required. The Town of Minnedosa has
also chosen to use the siren to alert local
residents of a larger emergency situation,
such as a chemical spill or explosion which
could put residents to risk of danger or
require the evacuation of residents. In the
event of such an emergency, the siren would
wail continuously alerting residents to head
indoors, close windows and doors and wait
for further instructions.

Japanese Garden
T

ucked away in a peaceful nook behind the Minnedosa

Regional Library is a tranquil Japanese Garden.
This garden was a result of a sister-city partnership
established in the mid-1990s between Minnedosa and Ishii,
Japan.
Creating such a garden in Canada was no easy task. Due
to drastic climate differences between the two countries,
certain plants and materials, which would withstand the cold
temperatures of a Manitoba winter, while remaining authentic
to a Japanese garden were used. Several non-plant features
have been used to bring authenticity to the garden. One of
these features is a basin made of rock which is known as
Chozubacki. Located near the gardens entrance, its purpose
is for visitors to wash their hands and face upon entering.
Other unique features include a Shishi Odoshi made of
bamboo and a rain chain, also called Kusari doi, which creates

a fountain-like effect making a musical sound in the falling

water. Some non-water related features include a lattice and
bamboo fence, known as Sodi Gaki and a static (non changing)
Zen Garden.
Visit the peaceful Japanese garden and experience firsthand

ince 1883, the Minnedosa Agricultural Society has off some of the winning home baking. Bidders are
held an annual summer fair. This tradition, started by always generous with their bids to take home a delicious

number of parks and playgrounds for children and

Located north of the Little Saskatchewan River,
west of Tanners Crossing School, the development
of this park is a multi-year project. Phase One has
been completed with a walking trail, bike park and
picnic area. Phase Two is now underway and includes the
development of a dog park. Future phases will include a
disc golf course and skate park.
Tanners Crossing Park, located east of the Main
Street Bridge was created in 1970 by the local Railroad
Centennial Committee. Highlights of the park include a
decommissioned Canadian Pacific engine and caboose as
well as a band stand dedicated to the memory of former
Minnedosa Mayor and musician, Rick Everett.

Downtown Minnedosa also features a number of

small corner parks, known as Founders Parks. These parks, a
project undertaken by the Chamber of Commerce Business
Improvement Committee can be found along Main Street
at the corners of 2nd Avenue North, 3rd Avenue North,
Armitage Avenue and 2nd Avenue South (across from the
clock tower). Further south on Main Street, is a
Founders Park dedicated to Minnedosa resident and
former Manitoba Premier, the late Walter Weir. This one is
located at the corner of Main Street and 3rd Avenue S.W.
The Elks playground can be found at Minnedosa
beach, just north of the spillway. There are also playgrounds
located at the corners of 4th Avenue and 2nd Street N.W.,
8th Avenue and 2nd Street S.W., and along 5th Avenue
N.E. between 3rd and 4th Street. Enjoy some time alone or
together with family and friends at one our beautiful parks
or playgrounds.

Heritage Village

tep back in time at the Heritage Village.

If you are interested in seeing how people lived and
how things were done back in the good old days be
sure to take a tour of the Minnedosa Museum and Heritage
Village. Open during the months of July and August, as well
as other times of the year by appointment, the Heritage
Village features ten beautifully restored buildings, each full
of artifacts from days gone by.
During your tour of the village you will visit a blacksmith
shop, one-room school house, country church, trappers
cabin, period home, log barn and more.
The most unique building on the village grounds is the
two-storey octagon display building, which was moved
onsite from the Minnedosa Fairgrounds and restored back
to its former glory. It is one of only three such buildings still
standing in the province and is the only one which features
its original upper cupola. Other village attractions include a

working windmill, wooden waterwheel and a trout pond.

The Heritage Village will comes alive with a pioneer
church service, tours of the buildings, BBQ, music, dancing
and other old time attractions during the museums annual
Heritage Day celebration.
To get to the Museum and Heritage Village turn east off
Main Street at 3rd Avenue N.E. and travel four blocks. A
welcome sign and stone gate will welcome you as you follow
the road into the heart of the Heritage Village.

odeo action comes to life each August long eekend

in Minnedosa. After many years absence, a group
of dedicated volunteers brought a family-friendly
rodeo back to Minnedosa in 2004. Since that time, the local
rodeo has continued to grow in success and as a result, the
Minnedosa Rodeo has been named Rodeo of the Year by
the Heartland Rodeo Association in 2009 and 2012!
Each year, over 1,500 people take in the Minnedosa
Rodeo and enjoy events such as bareback, calf roping,
barrel racing, saddle bronc, team roping, goat tying and
of course the adrenaline rising, nail-biting bull riding!
Other popular rodeo attractions include muttin bustin
for the kids, an evening dance, various vendors and other
family-friendly attractions.
In addition to the two-day Heartland Rodeo,
Minnedosa is also one of the stops on the Manitoba High

School Rodeo Associations annual circuit.

Throughout the rodeo weekend, spectators are sure to
see the talent of local cowboys and cowgirls as a number of
hometown and neighbouring competitors in various events.
This August long weekend, put on your jeans, cowboy
hat and boots and head on down to the local rodeo grounds.

Rodeo of the Year!

Spillway and Dam

popular attraction in our valley is the Minnedosa

Spillway. Located at the southeast corner of
Minnedosa Lake, the current spillway is the second
such structure to stand at this location. The original collapsed
on May 4th, 1948, causing a major flooding disaster for
downtown Minnedosa. A book on this event, Hold Back
the Dam, was produced by the Minnedosa District Heritage
Foundation to mark the 50th anniversary of the collapse in
1998. This book is still available for purchase at a number of
local businesses.
History of the spillway and Minnedosa Lake dates back
to 1907 when a group of local men created the Minnedosa
Power Company. The plan was to construct a dam, spillway,
hydro-electric generating station and lake, which would serve
as a reservoir to run the power turbines and supply electric power
to the booming Town of Minnedosa. Our man-made lake is
103 years old as water first flowed over the logs of the
Minnedosa spillway on April 10th, 1912.

For the three years following the spillway collapse in 1948,

the lake remained dry with only the Little Saskatchewan River
meandering through its once pristine waters. A combined effort
of the Town and surrounding Rural Municipalities convinced
government departments that the lake and spillway must be
rebuilt to serve as a major water conservation area for the
entire district. Work on the current spillway began in 1950 and
was completed two years later. Maintenance and repairs to the
spillway and earthen dam that holds the waters of Minnedosa
Lake back from the town have been ongoing with the most
recent major stabilization project undertaken in 2009 and
2010.

visitors, the variety of recreation available to our youth in Minnedosa allows us to ignite the passions of our young

Home to a number of indoor and outdoor venues that lend themselves well to support living and learning while being
active and social, the Minnedosa & District Recreation Commission offers more than 30 programs, events and activities
throughout the year and this doesnt even touch on the organized minor league sports teams and leagues which are
based here in the community.
We offer a solid slate of fitness and physical activities throughout the year including swimming, skating, kayaking,
running, spin classes and yoga. These are supported by activities that focus on our creative and curious population with
arts and science camps, language classes, photography, painting, chess, story nights and skills development like dog
obedience training. A third category allows us to make full use of our unique prairie landscape as its very own setting
for engaging experiences including geocaching, ice fishing and pond hockey. This list just includes a portion of what is

Winter Fun

innedosa is a fabulous tourist destination during the hot

summer months, but there is also a lot of activity and
special attractions for all ages during the chilly winter

months.
Skiing is a huge attraction and Minnedosa is fortunate to be
home to a local downhill skiing venue, Ski Valley. Located 7 km
Northwest of the Town of Minnedosa, Ski Valley offers nine runs for
various levels of expertise, from beginners to advanced.
Snowmobiling is also a huge part of winter recreation in the area.
Minnedosa is home to the Valley Snow Hawks Snowmobile Club,
which promotes snowmobile fun, safety and tourism. Throughout
the winter season, the club hosts a number of snowmobile related
events and gives back to the community by way of financial
contributions. Minnedosa is connected to a groomed trail route
in the area and there is a designated snowmobile route within
town limits for snowmobile enthusiasts to use to get in and out of
the community and fill up with gas without great disturbance to
residents.
The frozen surface of Minnedosa Lake is the perfect foundation

of ice fishing huts and each winter, a small community of shacks

develops on the lake. During the February Long Weekend, a large
outdoor pond hockey tournament, Skate the Lake is held at the
lake. Since 2007, this fundraiser has donated over $62,000 to local
projects such as the Community Daycare and Minnedosa Regional
Events Centre (new arena).
Minnedosa, like most Canadian communities is no stranger to
hockey or curling activity. Throughout the winter, the local Arena
and Curling Club are both hopping with activity as our local hockey
players and curlers compete in various games, tournaments and
bonspiels.
Minnedosa truly is a year round tourist destination!

Rockin the Fields

ock fans from coast to coast have come to

know Minnedosa as the place to spend their August
long weekend. In 1996, Minnedosa hosted its first
assic Rock weekend attracting thousands of people for
weekend of classic rock music. In 2004 the festival was
vamped as Rockin the Fields of Minnedosa and has
ntinued to grow and gain strength and popularity as each
ar passes.
The festival comes together each year with the
pport of over 150 co-operative members, 11 board
embers and over 300 dedicated volunteers and generous
onsors. In 2012, festival fans voted RFM the #1 festival in
anitoba and the #5 festival in Canada during the West Jet
n n Festivals contest. Numerous other honours, awards
d accolades have been bestowed on this home grown, nonofit co-operative festival.

A number of local service groups band together in

support of the festival each year, volunteering their time
in exchange for a percentage of the festivals proceeds.
Since this partnership began, over $300,000 has been
donated back to the community from the Rockin the Fields
weekend.
Some of the acts booked for this year include Queen
City Kids, Moist, The Tea Party and Daughtry.

Actress Maxine Miller was born in
Minnedosa on June 18, 1949. The actress had
roles on popular tv shows such as Mr. Rogers
Neighbourhood, Party of Five, Corner Gas and
Supernatural.

Bison Park

Minnedosa and Minnedosa Lake, you will find a herd
of bison housed in a large, fenced compound known
as the Bison Park.
Decades ago, bison herds, numbering in the millions
roamed the plains and crossed the Little Saskatchewan River
Valley as part of their natural migration route. In March
1996, the bison returned to Minnedosa, thanks to a tourism
project developed by the Minnedosa Lake Rehabilitation
Committee. For the past 19 years, our local herd of bison
have been a popular attraction for both local residents and
visitors to our community.
The bison park is designed to provide a spacious grazing
ground for the herd as well as visibility for spectators from
all sides. The bison remain onsite at the local compound
year-round, so it does not matter what time of year you

visit Minnedosa, you can always visit the bison! If you are
fortunate enough to be in the area during April or May, there
is a great chance you will see newborn calves roaming close
to their mothers.
Bison bulls live for an average of 20 years and weigh
in at an average of 900 kg or 2,000 lbs. The female bison
(cows) have an average lifespan of 17 years and usually
weigh in the neighbourhood of 545 kg or 1,200 lbs. Bison
calves are born between April and May and weigh an average
of 27 kg or 60 lbs.
