wait if your child is ready.

Its common for a previously toilettaught child to have some trouble

using the potty during times of stress.
For example, a 2- or 3-year-old dealing
with a new sibling may regress (return
to a previous level of development).
But if your child was previously potty
trained and is having problems, talk
with your doctor just to be on the
safe side and to rule out things like an
infection.
If your child is 3 years or older and
is not yet potty trained, talk to the
doctor, who can help determine the
problem and offer advice to make the
process easier.
Even before your child is ready to try
the potty, you can prepare your little
one by teaching about the process:
Use words to express the act of
using the toilet (pee, poop, and
potty).
Ask your child to let you know when
a diaper is wet or soiled.
Identify behaviors (Are you going
poop?) so that your child can learn
to recognize peeing and pooping.
Get a potty chair your child can
practice sitting on. At first, your child
can sit on it clothed. Then, he or she
can sit on the chair with a diaper.
And when ready, your child can go
bare-bottomed.
If youve decided that your child is
ready to start learning how to use the
potty, these tips may help:
Set aside some time to devote to the
potty-training process.
Dont make your child sit on the
toilet against his or her will.
Show your child how you sit on
the toilet and explain what youre
doing (because your child learns by
watching you). You can also have
your child sit on the potty seat and
watch while you or one of his or
her siblings use the toilet.
Establish a routine. For example, you
may want to begin toilet teaching by
having your child sit on the potty
after waking with a dry diaper, or
45 minutes to an hour after drinking
lots of fluid. You may be able to catch
your child peeing. Only put your
child on the potty for a few minutes
a couple of times a day, and let your
child get up if he or she wants to.
Try catching your child in the act of
pooping. Children often give clear
cues that they need to use the
bathroom their faces turn red,
and they may grunt or squat. And
many kids are regular as to the time
of day they tend to have a bowel
movement.
Have your child sit on the potty
within 15 to 30 minutes after meals
to take advantage of the bodys
natural tendency to have a bowel
movement after eating (this is called
the gastro-colic reflex).

www.centralcoastfamily.com

Page 2

Child Development
Remove a bowel movement (poop)
from your childs diaper, put it in the
toilet, and tell your child that poop
goes in the potty.
Make sure your childs wardrobe is
adaptable to potty training. In other
words, avoid overalls and shirts that
snap in the crotch. Simple clothes are
a must at this stage and kids need to
be able to undress themselves.
Some parents let their child have
some time during the day without a
diaper. If he or she urinates without
wearing a diaper, your child may be
more likely to feel whats happening
and express discomfort. (But if you
opt to keep your childs bottom bare
for a little while, youll need to keep
the potty close by, protect your rugs
and carpet, and be willing to clean
up.)
When your son is ready to start
peeing standing up, have target
practice. Show him how to stand
so he can aim into the toilet. Some
parents use things like cereal pieces
as a bulls-eye to aim at.
Offer your child small rewards,
such as stickers or time reading
with Mommy, every time your child
goes in the potty. Keep a chart to

track successes. Once your little one

appears to be mastering the use of
the toilet, let him or her pick out bigkid underpants to wear.
Make sure all of your childs
caregivers follow the same routine
and use the same names for body
parts and bathroom acts. Let them
know how youre handling the issue
and ask that they use the same
approaches so your child wont
become confused.
Above all, be sure to praise all
attempts to use the toilet, even if
nothing happens. And remember that
accidents will happen. Its important
not to punish potty-training children or
show disappointment when they wet
or soil themselves or the bed. Instead,
tell your child that it was an accident
and offer your support. Reassure your
child that he or she is well on the way
to using the potty like a big kid.
If youre torn about when to start the
toilet-teaching process altogether, let
your child be your guide. Dont feel
pressured by others (your parents,
in-laws, friends, siblings, coworkers,
etc.) to begin. Many parents of past
generations started potty training
much sooner than many parents do

GRADUATION

by Kristen Barnhart

I have always been a reader. No

surprise there! But all the books
that Ive read could not truly
prepare me for the roller coaster
ride of motherhood. I know,
men are filled with their awe
of fatherhood, but I only know
what I used my E Tickets for.
The sheer daunting physicality
of being taken over by someone
inside you, their right from that
first moment to be nurtured and
defended, and the way inner
strengths surface, still catches me
unaware.
Six years ago, my daughter
graduated from high school. She
stood in front of her senior class
and sang. Her voice was strong
as it fell over a standing-roomonly hushed stadium, and her gift
pure. Id give you the moon, but
youd never know the warmth of
the sunshine. My daughter and
her friend offered their wishes to
the friends they had known since
birth or at least since high school.
The wish was for them to try for
arms that open wide and wings
to fly. They sang the wish each
parent feels for their newborn
and all the way to this rite of

My daughter is now graduated

Thousands of people gathered in
front of CSUNs library to watch
their child graduate, and the

All the languages came together

their childs name was read and
the smiling teary faces needed
no translation as eyes met and
parental nods were exchanged.
It was also rather surreal, because

Make timely
adjustments
to your 529 plan

by Molly Peoples

If you have school-age children,

you might greet the arrival
of June with some relief. For
at least a few months, you
dont have to worry about
encouraging kids to do their
homework, study for tests,
give you their permission slips
for field trips, and so on.

Up until this year, you were

only allowed to change the
investments in your 529 plan
once a year.
This caused
concern among some investors,
who wanted the freedom to
change their 529 investments
in response to movements in
the financial markets.

But one day, these obligations

will give way to a substantially
bigger one paying for
college.
If youve already
begun preparing for that day
with a tax-advantaged collegesavings vehicle, such as a 529
plan, youre taking a positive
step, because higher education
is expensive.
But its not
enough to just set up your 529
plan. You may also need to
adjust it over time.

But late in 2014, President

Obama
signed
into
law
the Achieving a Better Life
Experience (ABLE) act, the key
purpose of which was to create
tax-exempt accounts allowing
people to save for various
disability - related expenses.
One provision of the ABLE act
also allows 529 plan investors
to change their investments
twice each year, rather than
only once.

Local History

North SLO County

by Guy Crabb

It is summer and time to go

exploring strange and mysterious
places. Sure, you could go to
India or China, but why spend a
whole bunch of money when you
can visit some strange places in
our own county? I am going to
tell you about some places to take
family and visitors alike.

There are benches and friendly

people enjoying themselves, so
plan to spend several hours at the
zoo and the park.

While you are at the zoo, you can

eat lunch at Atascadero Park.
This park has tons of grass where
the kids can run around like wild
monkeys. Huge trees provide a lot
of shade if you want to throw out
a blanket and lay under the trees.

Since you are in Atascadero, you

should park near that big building
with the round top and some
fountains. This is Atascadero City
Hall or some people call it the
Administrative Building. It was
originally completed in 1918 and
was the jewel of the town. This
building recently reopened after
being closed for several years due
to earthquake damage in 2003.
My wife and I enjoy exploring, and
we had never been inside city hall.
So, we decided to boldly walk in
the front doors of this incredible
building. They have all kinds of
artifacts in display windows that
show the people and history of
Atascadero. As we were looking
at the displays, people working
in the building seemed to be
very friendly. A man came in and
immediately offered to take us
on a tour of the building, but we
made plans to go back at another
time. The inside of the building
is magnificent. Ive been in some
state capitals that werent this
nice. You really need to make
some time to visit. The park
called Sunken Gardens in front
of the building always seems to
have people sitting on the grass

Central Coast Family

First, I insist that you pack up

the kids and go directly to the
Atascadero zoo, officially known
as Charles Paddock Zoo. The zoo
was named after Charles Chuck
Paddock, a park ranger who begin
taking in wounded animals and
nursing them back to health. In
1963, the animals he cared for
were brought to the current
location, and in 1979 the zoo was
renamed Charles Paddock Zoo.
The Zoo has had a recent facelift
and it is full of great animals that
kids love to look at. You can
explore while walking around
the 5-acre property and sitting
on benches as the kids enjoy
checking out the spider monkeys
or the tiger.

this has to do with a combination

Thank You, Authors
We have countless authors to
thank for coining some of the more
colorful words in our language.
This week, lets celebrate a few.

June 2015

The quote sparked not only a good

laugh, but an interest in the origins
of the word brow. It seems the
Old English braew initially meant
blinker or twinkle, and was used to
refer to the eyelid or eyelashes. Its
early relatives can be found in brus
(proto-Germanic), bhrus (Sanskrit),
ophris (Greek), bruvis (Lithuanian),
and the Old Irish word bru.
To refer to what today is called
the eyebrow, the Anglo-Saxons
combined bru with a prefix
meaning over, to create the term
ofer-bru, but somewhere in the
1200s the prefix evaporated and
the prefixless bru or brouw came
to mean eyebrow. It wasnt until
the 1500s that the word brow came
to be used to refer to the forehead.
The term browbeat showed up in
the late 1500s, though it appears
that 16th century browbeating
had more to do with frowning, or
lowering ones brows than with
any sort of attack.
The terms low-brow and high-brow
didnt come about until 1902, a
mere decade before the coinage
of that beautiful term labeling
those of us who consider books a
source of intellectual enjoyment,
middle-brow.
