TRANSLATION-RELATED COURSES IN UK-BASED UNIVERSITIES

Translation Studies is a relatively new academic study, but, over the years, it has gained much
popularity. More and more institutions are introducing a variety of diploma and degree level
courses in translation and interpreting. What I have observed, however, is that it is the
European universities, which are comparatively more prone towards opening Translation
Studies centres and departments, and offering a colourful variety of courses to the prospective
students. The field of study is not quite popular with the US-based institutions, where only a
handful of universities pay heed to translation studies. I will thus start with European,
specifically Uk-based, universities to talk about translation-related courses.

Owing to the mounting interest among students to opt for translation-related undergraduate
and postgraduate courses, there is an obvious need for providing a rich source of information
regarding these programmes around the world. I am starting this gigantic task with this post,
which should be considered first in the series. In this first post, I am presenting links to the
translation and interpreting courses offered at UK-based universities. I have tried my best to
check out every Uk-based universitys academic programmes, so as not to miss out on a
relevant diploma or degree. To the best of my knowledge, the following list is the most
comprehensive in comparison with other such lists found online. Just for instance, in perhaps
all the online lists, you may not find the mention of Aberystwyth University certificate in Welsh
translation. Similarly, Cardiff Universitys newly-established translation-related programme
does not get a place on such lists. But, as you would find out while reading my posts in this
series, I have taken care of presenting the latest and an all-encompassing list to my readers. I
would appreciate your comments on the list, and would especially welcome your personal
experiences with these courses and universities. If you could share your opinions as to which of
these translation-related programmes you consider the best and why I will be able to
reserve a future post for talking about some top courses and universities with reference to
translation and interpretation. It will certainly be of great help to the students interested in this
line of study.
Note: About a year ago, when I started to search for appropriate universities where I could
begin my PhD research, I was confronted by a lack of information on the Internet. I, thus, had to
spend a lot of time searching through a large number of universities across the world. Through
this post and those that will follow it I aim at saving a lot of your time.
