COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Extensive use of computers as part of the mechanical engineering design process. Introduction to the
finite element method for thermal and mechanical systems design. Software packages using solid
modeling, finite element analysis, nonlinear solvers, and kinematic simulation will be introduced. Design
project work using computational tools is a major component of the course. Prerequisites: ENGR 1204,
BENG 3375, and MENG 3332.
COURSE PREREQUISITES: BENG 3303, Introduction to Materials Science and MENG 3332,
Mechanics of Materials.
REQUIRED COURSE TEXTBOOKS:
(1) Toogood, Roger, Creo Simulate Tutorial Releases 1.0 and 2.0: Structural and Thermal, Schroff
Deveopment Corp., 2012. (2) Kuang-Hua Chang, Mechanism Design with Creo Elecment/Pro 5.0,
Schroff Development Corp., 2011.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
A. Apply the mechanical design methodology
B. Effectively communicate a mechanical design in graphics, written report, and oral presentations
C. Use computer tools to solve nonlinear and linear equations
D. Use CAD software to design parts and assemblies
E. Use CAE software to determine forces and analyze the motion of a mechanism
F. Use CAE software to analyze stress, strain, and heat transfer.
G. Use computer tools to animate and verify design.
EVALUATION REQUIREMENTS:
Course grading will be weighted as follows: quizzes (25%), midterm exams (two at 25% each), final
project (25%). Any changes will be announced in class. Grades will be assigned based on the following
scale:
A
90% or better
B
80 89%
C
70 79%
D
60- 69%
F
less than 60%
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance is expected at all classes. Make-up exams and quizzes may be given only for documented
medical reasons, emergencies, or University sponsored activities. Advance notice must be given for
absence due to University sponsored activities.
