MAST Test

The MAST Test is a simple, self scoring test that helps assess if you have a drinking
problem. Please circle the answers to the following YES or NO questions:

The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) incorporates questions about


consequence of alcohol use. It has been tested in primary care settings and has

high levels of validity and reliability. It is useful in detecting problem drinking


and probable alcoholism.
Scoring for the (MAST)
Score one point if you answered the following:
1. No
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. No
5. Yes
6. Yes
7 through 22: Yes

Add up the scores and compare to the following chart:


0 - 2 No apparent problem
3 - 5 Early or middle problem drinker
6 or more Problem drinker

Below is a shorter (13 question) version of the Michigan


Alcohol Questionnaire called the Short MAST or SMAST
On the following sample questionnaire page answers related to a
diagnosis of alcoholism are shown in parentheses after each
question. Score one point for each of these answers:
A score of three or more indicates probable alcoholism.
A score of two indicates possible alcoholism.
A score of one or less indicates alcoholism is not likely.
