GEOLOGICAL SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

Plains Exploration and Production Company spudded the Pancake Summit Well 21-1 in White
Pine County, Nevada, on the 16th of March 2007 with Ensign Rig #82. The 14 inch surface
hole was drilled out from conductor pipe with fresh water in a dark gray brown silty shale,
interpreted as the upper part of the Diamond Peak Formation. The signature sandstone and
conglomerate interval of the Diamond Peak was encountered at 1150 feet, and the Mississippian
Chainman Shale came in at a sample top of 1480 feet. The hole was logged, and 9 5/8 inch
surface casing was set at 1572 feet on March 24. The drilling fluid in the 8 inch hole was a gel
mud aerated at 750 cfm through a parasite string at the casing shoe.
The Chainman Shale consisted of dark gray brown to black brittle marine shales with minor
pyrite, mica and carbonaceous material. The upper portion was interbedded with streaks of
poorly sorted sandstone and siltstone, while limestone interbeds marked the base of the
formation. Hole inclination soon built to 10 degrees, and at 2150 feet a VertiTrak motor was
utilized to control deviation. No other drilling problems were encountered here.
The sample top for the Mississippian Joana Limestone was at 3444 feet. It consisted primarily of
light gray, brown and buff earthy fossiliferous limestone with an abundance of calcite lined
fractures. Some spotty yellow fluorescence with a weak solvent cut were observed near the top
of the formation, with small amounts (100 ppm) of methane and ethane. The wellbore lost
returns at 3630 feet, and gas readings were compromised for the remainder of the well. Surging
fluid levels and jetted air from the flowline would diminish any potential shows. Later, the air
and drilling fluids were diverted through the gas buster. At 3870 feet, two Form-a-Seal pills
were spotted in an unsuccessful attempt to regain circulation. Then a 150 bbl cement plug was
set, and a second cement plug was spotted at 3600 feet after drilling to 3918 feet. Drill cuttings
became heavily contaminated with lost circulation material and Chainman Shale cavings. At
4100 feet, air was rigged up to the standpipe and circulated through the bit as well as the parasite
string. At 4125 feet a third cement plug was spotted, and drilling proceeded with partial-to-no
returns. The wellbore would alternately take fluid and make water, soon over-filling the reserve
pit.
The Devonian Pilot Shale was picked at 4008 feet in a limestone / shale sequence near the base
of the relatively clean Joana Limestone. Sample quality was poor, but some spotty fluorescence
with milky yellow cut was observed in the brown microcrystalline limestone fragments. The
dark gray brown silty Pilot shales became more prominant around 4570 feet. Air to the bit was
shut off at 4660 feet in an attempt to dispose of excess water down the wellbore, and drilling
proceeded without returns. A bit trip was made at 4731 feet before regaining circulation. While
reaming to bottom, the hole packed off at a bit depth of 4577 feet; the drill string was stuck for
10 hours before coming free.

GEOLOGICAL SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS (CONT.)

The top of the Devonian Guilmette Formation was picked at 4733 feet. The upper limestone was
dark gray brown, dense microcrystalline to earthy with minor calcite lined fractures. By 4800
feet the lithology was predominantly a medium to dark brown dolomite with micro-sucrosic
texture. White coarse-crystalline dolomite rhombs and partially filled vugs indicated fair
porosity over much of the interval. Visual shows were spotty and rare, with less than 5 percent
fluorescence in any given sample. Most trays had no fluorescence or cut, despite fairly good
vuggy porosity. The best visual shows were from 5630 to 5740 feet, with pinkish brown
staining, spotty bright yellow to gold fluorescence and a bright yellow streaming cut. Again, this
occurred in about 5 percent of the sample fragments, and the better porosity rarely exhibited any
oil show.
A total depth of 6000 feet was reached at 01:00 on April 18, 2007. Wireline logs were attempted,
but tagged at 2290 feet. A wiper trip was necessary to clean the hole, and subsequent logging
runs went to bottom without incident. The Sonic tool failed, but the Nuetron/Density, Resistivity
and Imaging/Dipmeter logging runs were all successful. On April 20th the decision was made to
plug and abandon.
