A week after the Memorial Day weekend, Gov. Chris

Christie kicked off the summer tourism season at the
Jersey Shore Friday, receiving a warm, cheerful welcome from a mostly supportive crowd but that didnt
mean he could escape questions about some recent policy decisions or his political future.
As he walked along the boardwalk in Belmar and
Point Pleasant Beach, Christie stopped to shake hands
and take photos with people who lined up to meet him.
Although Christies support has been waning in the
polls and the crowds seemed smaller than in previous years he still had a legion of fans.
The recent decline in Christies popularity certainly
has not lessened the excitement of Melinda Zamaloff
and Jackie Philippe of Toms River, who were on the
Boardwalk in Point Beach when Christie arrived on the
scene to greet them.
Not at all, Philippe said, when asked if she was any
less enthusiastic about the governor.
Christie didnt talk about his possible 2016 run, but he
did answer a number of questions from the New Jersey
media, including his announcement Thursday that the

Talk about ground zero for torrential rainfall.

An amazing 5 inches of rain fell in a very localized area of Toms River in a few hours Thursday, the
state climatologist said, causing the flash flooding
that turned roads into rivers.
The flash flooding made roads in eastern Toms
River impassable and stranded motorists.
Rainfall totals include 5.24 inches and 4.6 inches
in southeastern Toms River; 2.76 inches in Pine
Beach; 2.54 inches in southeastern Berkeley; 2.37
inches in Seaside Heights; 1.08 inches in eastern Lacey and just 0.09 inches at Robert J. Miller Airpark in
western Berkeley, according to David A. Robinson,
the state climatologist based at Rutgers University.
An isolated area of strong thunderstorms just
sat over the Toms River area for a couple of hours
and in the afternoon There were some other scattered storms in the state, but nothing like what fell in
Seaside Heights, Toms River, he said.
