Detection of Tramp Metal in Bulk Materials

ORETRONIC III TRAMP METAL DETECTOR

Thermo Ramseys New Oretronic III Tramp Metal Detector ...

Because theres nothing cheap about tramp metal.

Tramp metal can stop your operation and
the damage it can cause to equipment can
be expensive. That's why conscientious
operators and owners consider tramp
metal detectors to be an essential part of
their operation. The Thermo Ramsey
Oretronic III Tramp Metal Detector provides
an economical and reliable means to protect expensive crushers, conveyors and
other process equipment from damage by
tramp metal.
The Oretronic III is designed especially for
belt conveyors moving coal, iron pellets,
minerals, aggregates and other bulk materials. It can detect all types of metallic
scrap including: bucket teeth, manganese
steel mantles, bore crowns, bar scrap
chains, tools, etc. It can even detect tramp
metal when buried in wet conductive
materials. And, because it is insensitive to
materials with high magnetic permeability
and electrical conductivity, the Oretronic III
can be used in applications where conventional metal detectors produce an unacceptable false alarm rate.

The Oretronic III TMD has a microprocessorbased control unit that automates system
setup and calibration. The operator interface
provides easy-to-read indicators and has a
touch panel keypad designed to simplify
setup and system maintenance.

It also features password protection for

security, RS-485 serial communications and
variable frequency to eliminate interference
from other electrical equipment.
So if you're an owner, plant manager or
engineer, remember the Thermo Ramsey
Oretronic III Tramp Metal Detector. It protects against turning your profit into scrap.

Features and Benefits

Microprocessor-Based - No adjustments
inside the enclosure. All functions accessed
by the front panel.
Variable Frequency - Allows you to set
the operating frequency. Interference and
false trips from motors, radios and other
devices are eliminated.
Quick Balance - Allows you to electronically balance the coil with the push of a key.
Single Coil (Optional) - A single coil assembly with both generator and receiver coils in
a single, under-the-belt coil assembly eliminates damage from high burden depths and
interference from overhead metal objects.

New Coil Frame - Coils are mounted on a

fiberglass support structure and made of
impact resistant PVC. The entire support
structure and coils are impervious to
moisture.
Offset Swing Arm - Provides coil protection and reduces likelihood of coil breakage from high burden.
Simple Installation - Can be installed
without cutting the belt and without special
tools or instruments.
Serial Communications - RS-485 is available as standard to communicate with a
remote PLC or remote front panel.
Password Protection - Prevents unwanted access by entering your personal PIN.

conveyor (e.g. a shovel tooth and an

adapter). In the calibrate mode, this display indicates calibration function codes.

9. SCROLL When pressed, scrolls

through various calibration and set-up
functions.

6. TOTAL COUNT Indicates the running

total of detected tramp (total trips). Total is
not resettable. In calibration mode, the display indicates calibration function value.

10. VALUE When pressed, changes

displayed calibration function value when
in the calibrate mode.

7. LEVEL Bar graph display indicates

the relative signal level.

Keypad
8. RESET When pressed, resets an
alarm by de-energizing alarm output and
resetting coast count display.

Distance Indication (optional) - With a

speed sensor, the front panel display will
show the distance from the coil to the
tramp metal in tenths of feet.
Thermo Ramseys Oretronic III Tramp
Metal Detector is designed for ease of
operation and calibration. In addition to
the easy-to-read displays, all operations
of the detector are accessible on the front
panel via switches.

Lamp Indicators
1. ALARM Red lamp on indicates
that tramp has been detected and that
the alarm output is activated.
2. BYPASS Amber lamp on indicates
that the detector has been manually bypassed. The detector operates normally
except Alarm and Time Delay outputs are
deactivated.

The single coil unit combines the generator

and receiver coils in one assembly to eliminate
potential damage to an upper coil on a
conventional system.

The coils are mounted to a rugged support

made of nonconductive materials. The field
generator coil is swing-mounted to protect
the coil and support from being struck
from oversized material. The coils are
made of impact-resistant polyvinyl chloride
and designed to withstand stresses up to
10 times gravity. The generator coil and
dual wound
receiver coils
are mounted
on the support.
A dual receiver
coil is employed
to counteract
interferences
from sources
such as electric
motors, lightning and radio
transmitters.
Remote front panel can be
located up to 4,000 feet away
from the TMD.

3. NORMAL Green lamp on indicates

normal detector operation.
NOTE: Special bezels on the door
enhance the colored indicator lights for
high visibility at a distance and when
viewing from the side.

5. COAST COUNT In the run mode,

indicates the number of pieces of tramp
detected since last reset. This feature
alerts the operator that several pieces of
tramp must be located before restarting

MENU STRUCTURE
The operator interface is based on a menu structure that
guides you through TMD setup and calibration. The menu
structure has five "high-level" menus, shown in the eightcharacter alphanumeric display, that indicate the operating
mode and status of the TMD.
Within the setup and calibrate high-level menus are the individual parameters and settings that define how your TMD is
to operate. The following shows the TMD menu tree.
