About image uploads

Every product on Amazon requires at least one product image. Choose images that are
straightforward, clear, and easy to understand.
Images have a direct impact on customer's purchasing decisions. They inspire customer confidence
and boost sales. Images must be:

Information rich
Accurate representations of the product
Attractively presented and of high quality

Show only the product that you sell, with minimal or no props. Text, logos and inset images are not
allowed. Whenever possible, provide multiple images, showing different angles and details of the
product. This is your opportunity to show your product to your customer, so quality matters.
To upload and manage your images in Vendor/Advantage Central, go to Items > Upload Images.
Important: Images must follow our technical and content requirements, and if you use someone
else's photos, you must get permission.

Choose the right image

Our guidelines help you choose images that can be easily uploaded and that will be effective in
selling your product.
Technical image requirements
The image should meet the following technical requirements:

File format should be JPG, PNG, TIFF or GIF (JPG preferred).

Color should be RGB or CMYK (RGB is preferred because CMYK color sometimes shows color
tonal variations when displayed on the website).
Resolution should be at least 72 dpi.
The ideal size is 1000 pixels on the longest side so the images can be zoomed in on the site.
The smallest your file can be is 500 pixels in either height or width.

Note: Most image editing programs include a function that indicates the pixel dimensions. If
you do not have an image editing program, but the image will display in a browser, you may be
able to right-click (for Windows users) and view the image properties, which will indicate the
pixel dimensions. Image editing programs often allow you to change pixel dimensions. Resizing
small images to be larger usually reduces image quality, sometimes significantly. Any images
that are blurry or pixilated from upsizing or recompression damage will be rejected.
We apply additional compression to images when displaying them on its website. For the best
results, submit your images with minimal or no compression. For JPEG images, save at the
highest possible quality level and avoid resaving the image in JPEG format while editing the
image. For TIFF files, do not apply any file compression. Remove layers from all images before
submitting.
We do not accept images submitted in the following formats:

p2

EPS (Encapsulated Postscript File)

BMP (Windows Bitmap)
PDF (Portable Document Format)

We also do not accept file formats that are proprietary to a specific software application,
including, but not limited to:

PSD (Native Photoshop Files

IA (Adobe Illustrator
ART (America Online
CDR (CorelDRAW)
CPT (Corel Paint)
FH (Macromedia Freehand)
FLA (Flash), .PICT (MAC OSX default)
PSP (Paint Shop Pro)
DOC (Microsoft Word)

Image types
You will have one MAIN image, which is the first image customers will see on a product's detail
page. A product must have at least a MAIN image in order to be visible on the detail page and in
search results. It is also helpful to provide additional images to show details and other views.
Important: Our servers can only accept images that are formatted to our specifications. In
addition, we reserve the right to reject images that do not meet our content standards, even if the
images meet the technical formatting specifications.

Image color
Our customers use a wide variety of computer monitors that display color differently. It is likely
that colors you see on your screen are different from what someone else sees. To ensure your
images display accurately, follow our image color specifications.

Color Modes
Color Mode

Description

Accepted?

RGB

RGB is the color mode native to the web and

most color screen displays. RGB stands for
red, green, and blue. These three colors
displayed at varying levels of intensity create
over 16 million colors. The RGB color space is
used for product images.

Yes

CMYK

CMYK tends to show color tonal variations

when displayed on a website, since this color
mode is designated for printed materials not
web display.

Not preferred. Use RGB instead.

Grayscale

Grayscale is a color mode that is used both in

print and on the web. The grayscale color
space uses 256 shades of grey to create
images.

The grayscale color mode can be

used for images on Amazon only
when it accurately depicts the color
of gray or silver metal products.

Color Profiles and Color Display

ICC color profiles are a type of data stored in an image to indicate how electronic equipment
interprets color data. These are useful in the printing industry to ensure color accuracy, but are not
commonly used for web display. Images, which rely on a specific color profile for accurate color
display, may not appear as intended on Amazon. To ensure color accuracy, submit files that use
the RGB or working color format. To convert your image profile to RGB or Working RGB you must
have image editing software that has that capability. For instructions on how to convert color space
or assign the RGB profile, please consult the help documentation of the application, or speak to
your imaging service provider about preparing your images with the RGB color profile.

MAIN image guidelines

The primary image of your product is called the MAIN image and represents the product in search
results and browse-pages. It is the first image customers see on a product's detail page.
In addition to technical requirements, the image content of your MAIN image should follow these
guidelines:

The product image should be an attractive, professional, high-resolution photograph that

fills 85 to 100 percent of the image's area.
The background must be pure white (pure white blends in with the Amazon search and item
detail pages with RGB values of 255, 255, 255).
Natural shading or light reflection are acceptable if they are high quality, realistic, and blend
into the pure white background.

Guide to Uploading Images to Vendor Central/Advantage Central

p4

The image must show the entire product; no part of the product may be cut or sectioned in
the image.
The image must show the product and not the packaging.
Do not include accessories or props that are not included in the delivery of the product as it
may confuse the customer.
Do not include multiple views of the same product in a single image (use additional images
for additional views).
Do not include additional text that is not part of the product.
Do not include website URLs, advertising, pricing, discount information, or QR codes.
Do not include graphics, drawings, illustrations, logos, or watermarks. Only photos of the
delivered products are permitted. Designs or sketches of the products are not allowed.
For books, CDs, DVDs, and other media products, the MAIN image should be a photograph
or scan of the front cover.

Important: If you use someone else's image, you must get permission in order to avoid violating
any third party rights.
If your product is part of a variation parent/child relationship, each variation must have images
that represent that product variation.
Note: Some product lines have Image Synchronization enabled. For such cases, you only have to
upload one image for one of the sizes available and our system will copy that image for all the
variations.

Additional image guidelines

Additional images supplement MAIN image by showing the product in use, showing different sides
of a product, or showing details that aren't visible in the MAIN image. These images are displayed
on the item detail page next to the MAIN image.
Additional images can:

Show the product in use.

Show the product in an environment. While a white background is recommended, it is not
required.
Show the cross sections, textures, or other details of the product.
Convey the use of the product to enhance the buying experience.
For media products, the additional images can include the back cover, sample pages, or
screenshots.
All props or accessories must be presented in a way that does not cause customer confusion
about what is included, or not included, when ordering the product.

Additional images should NOT:

Be placeholder images.
Include logos or watermarks.
Include other website URLs or any selling information that leads customers to other
websites.
Include any shipping, pricing, promotional details or discounts.
Deceive or mislead customers with partial or inaccurate information.
Confuse customers about what is included, or not included, in the product.

Important: If you use someone else's image, you must get permission in order to avoid violating
any third party rights.

Verify image file format

Images need to be formatted in JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or GIF formats, in RGB or CMYK color mode, and
they must be at least 500 pixels in either height or width.
We prefer JPEG format and RGB color mode because CMYK tends to show color tonal variations
when displayed on Amazon. To enable the zoom function, we recommend that pixel dimensions be
1000 or larger in either height or width. Zoom has been proven to enhance sales.
To confirm that your images meet these requirements:
1. Locate the image file on your computer.
2. Right-click the image file and click Properties. The Properties window appears.
3. On the General tab, verify that the file type is one of the following formats:
JPEG (preferred because JPEG images are smaller and upload faster)
TIFF
PNG
GIF
Note: File Extensions are the three or four characters (jpg/jpeg, tif/tiff) that indicate
the file type. Changing the file extension of an image doesn't change the image type.
Images must first be converted to JPEG or TIFF format with image editing software.
If you change the file extension outside of the image editing software, it may cause
an upload failure in the Upload Images feature in Vendor/Advantage Central.
4. On the Details tab, verify the width, height, and color representation.
o
o
o

Note: If you need to make changes, you can use any image editing program to convert
your images to one of the required file formats by opening the file and selecting Save as.

Name your image files

We use the file name of your images to associate them with your product's detail page and to
identify them as MAIN or additional images.
File name components
You create the file name with three components, separated from each other by a period. Spaces,
dashes or additional characters are not allowed because they will prevent your image from
uploading to Amazon (for example, NEW-B000123456.jpg).
The naming convention is: product identifier + variant code + file extension (for example,
B000123456.MAIN.jpg or B000123456.PT02.jpg).
Details and additional examples are given below.
Note: If you receive an Incorrect file name error, but you followed the naming convention outlined
below, your product may not yet be active in the Amazon catalog. If you just uploaded your
product, you have to wait for the product to show up via search or browse in the Amazon catalog
before you can upload an image for that product.
Product identifier

Guide to Uploading Images to Vendor Central/Advantage Central

p13

The product identifier is either the Amazon ASIN code or one of the following ID codes, with no
dashes, spaces, or other punctuation. Any spaces, dashes, or additional characters will prevent
your image from going online.
Product identifier

Where to find It

ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number)

You should have received the ASIN from

your product management team.
Alternatively, the ASIN can be located
under Product Details on the product
detail page.

ISBN-13 (International Standard Book Number)

Use for books only. This product

identifier can be found under the
barcode of the book.
Use for products other than books.
These product identifiers can be found
under the barcode of every product.

EAN (European Article Number)

JAN (Japanese Article Number)
UPC (Universal Product Code)

Variant code
The variant code is a 4-character code that indicates what type of image you are uploading. For
MAIN images, the variant code is MAIN. Images with no variant code in their name will be treated
as a MAIN image. For example, both B000123456.MAIN.jpg or B000123456.jpg will be treated as
main images.
For additional images, choose a four-character variant code based on the content of the image. For
example, B000123456.PT01.jpg would show part 1, and B000123456.BACK.jpg would show the
back of the product.

Upload your image files

After you have correctly chosen, formatted, and named your image files, you are ready to upload
your product images.
Note: All product images submitted to us are subject to the vendor agreement currently in effect
between you and Amazon or, if there is no such agreement, the Limited License Agreement.
If the asset is eligible for synchronization, the system tries to identify all of the children ASINs of
the same parent and selects the ASINs that have the same color as the asset. The system then
copies the published image from that asset to this list of ASINs in the family. It additionally copies
the image to the parent ASIN. For such instances, you only need to upload one image for just one
size and color of the product. Contact your Product Management team to find out if Image
Synchronization is enabled for your product category.
You do not need to email us about submitted images. Your image will appear right away unless the
system detects an issue with your file and rejects it, or unless your image is trying to overwrite an
existing image from another source. Our Quality Assurance (QA) specialists will determine if your
new image should overwrite the existing image. This analysis is usually completed within 1-2
business days. If your image does not appear online within this time frame, check the status of
your image files for possible errors.
To upload individual or ZIP files:
1. (Optional) To combine your image files into a ZIP folder, select all of the desired images,
right-click, select Send to, and click Compressed (Zipped) folder.
Important: Image ZIP files should be no larger than 100 megabytes. If you have more
than 100 megabytes of images to upload, split them into multiple ZIP files, each of which is
smaller than 100MB.
2. Go to Items > Upload Images.
3. Click Browse.
4. Locate the desired image or ZIP files:
Option

Step

Individual image file Click Open.

Locate the ZIP folder and click Open.

5. Click Submit.
A confirmation message appears when your image upload has completed. Wait for the upload to
complete before closing your browser window or logging off of your computer.

6. Make the necessary corrections and upload the corrected image file.
The Image Upload Status page lets you track the status of your submitted images. The page
shows information about each submitted image, including its current state in the system. You can
sort on the column headings. To see a detailed explanation for each error message, click Learn
more on any image with errors.

Rejection and retouch reasons

We may reject or retouch submitted images if they do not meet our requirements.
The table below references the topics for each rejection or retouch reason. If your image has been
rejected, please correct the image so that it meets our image requirements and upload it again. If
your image has the Pending Retouch status, you don't need to take any action; our quality
assurance review determined that our retouch service may be able to fix your image to better
represent your product. You will see the final status of your upload within 1-2 business days.

Rejection 1 - POOR IMAGE QUALITY

We may reject images if the quality is poor.
To ensure quality, images must:

Meet the size requirements without having been up-sized (increasing the original size can
cause pixelation)
Come from a good source like a high quality scanner or professional photographer
Be JPEGs that were saved only once

Poor quality can also occur if your image file was corrupted, if the image was copied from a
website, or if it came from a poor scan.

Rejection 2 - PRODUCT OUT OF FOCUS

We will reject an image if the product appears blurry.
Blurry photos may be a result of photos that were originally out of focus, or the scanner may have
blurred your image. You will need to obtain a clear photograph or scan.
Acceptable

Unacceptable

Rejection 3 - PRODUCT NOT PROFESSIONALLY PHOTOGRAPHED OR SCANNED

We will reject an image if your scanner, camera, or lighting arrangement did not produce a high
enough quality image to represent the product appropriately.
You will need to review the lighting and the scanner or camera settings to make sure they are
producing the highest quality image possible. Ideally the product should be professionally
photographed or scanned.

Rejection 4 - PRODUCT TOO SMALL IN FRAME

We will reject an image if it has too much space around the product so that the product appears
too small on the website.
You will need to crop the photograph or scan the image so that the product fills as much of the
image frame as possible. Ideally the photograph should fill 85 to 100 percent of the image's area.

Rejection 5 - PRODUCT NOT AGAINST A WHITE BACKGROUND

We may reject images if the background is not pure white, has a poor quality shadow, or has text,
logos or watermarks.
A pure white background blends in with the detail and search page backgrounds. You can usually
only achieve this through an image edit software (in an edit software a pure white background
would have RGB values of 255, 255, 255). Shadows are acceptable as long as they blend to the
background and the product fills most of the image frame. You will need to have the image reedited if it does not meet this standard.

Rejection 6 - PRODUCT NOT OUTSIDE OF PACKAGING

We will reject images if they show the packaging rather than the actual product.
If not enough of the product is visible to enable a buying decision or if the packaging is too
prominent, then the image has failed to feature the actual product being sold. You will need to
obtain an image that clearly shows and features the entire product.

Rejection 7 - EXTRA PRODUCTS DEPICTED, MULTIPLE VIEWS OF THE PRODUCT, or UNACCEPTABLE

ELEMENTS
We will reject an image if the MAIN image includes extra items that are not included with the
product.
The MAIN image must have only a single view of the product that the customer will receive. It
cannot show accessories that are not included in the delivery, or props that may confuse the
customer. Multiple views of the same product in the MAIN image are not acceptable, but you can
use additional images to show alternate views. MAIN images cannot contain graphics, illustrations,
inset images, or logos. Have the image re-edited to remove any additional items that are not
shipping with this product or obtain a photograph or scan that includes only the product that is for
sale.

Rejection 8 - NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION TO ENABLE A BUYING DECISION

We will reject an image that does not provide enough information about the product.
Make sure that enough of the product and its attributes are visible and that the image represents
the actual product. Do not use graphics, black and white images, or placeholder images. Obtain a
photograph or scan that shows the entire, actual product as it will be seen by the customer.

Rejection 9 - PRODUCT DOES NOT MATCH ASIN

We will reject an image that does not match the ASIN (10-digit Amazon product identifier), title,
product description, color, quantity, or variant naming.
This rejection could occur because it was either named with the wrong ASIN, or your EAN, UPC, 13digit ISBN, or JAN did was not renamed to the correct ASIN. Check and correct the catalog
information, possibly renaming the file to the correct ASIN, EAN, UPC, 13-digit ISBN, or JAN, then
upload the image again.

Rejection 10 - BAD ASIN OR VARIANT

We will reject an image if it could not be associated with an ASIN or variant.
Some of the reasons we may reject an image are:

The system did not recognize the ASIN (10 digit Amazon product identifier) or variant.
The EAN/UPC/13-digit ISBN/JAN did not belong to an ASIN.
Your ASIN was not yet set up in our system for these external IDs to map.

We accept ASIN, 13-digit ISBN, EAN, JAN and UPC codes, along with a valid four digit variant code
from an established set of variants.

Rejection 11 - UNSUPPORTED FILE SUFFIX

We will reject an image with an unacceptable or unrecognizable file extension or file type.
We accept JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), .PNG or .GIF file types (JPEG is preferred). The extensions can
be upper or lower case.
Verify that your file is in one of the accepted formats by right-clicking the image file and selecting
Properties. If is not in an accepted format, open the file in an image edit program and save as the
correct format or obtain a file in the correct format from the photographer or scanner.

Rejection 12 - IMAGE FILE WAS CORRUPTED OR OF AN UNEXPECTED FORMAT

We will reject an image if the file is incomplete, corrupted, or in the wrong format.
Common reasons you may be receiving this error are that the file type extension was incorrectly
attached or it was an un-flattened .tif or .psd file that was saved as a jpg. We accept JPEG (.jpg),
TIFF (.tif), .PNG or .GIF files with either RGB or CMYK color models. You may also get this error if
there are color tonal variations in the image (this can occur when CMYK images are used on a
website). RGB images are preferred.
Verify the image file format if you get the Rejection 12 error.

If you cannot view the file, it may be corrupt. You can try using an image editing program
to change the file extension to a known file type to see if it was assigned the wrong
extension. If the file appears to be something other than the current named extension,
flatten and re-save it as a JPEG using an image edit program.
If you can view the file, it may be an incomplete file. You can try using an image editing
program to re-save the file as a JPEG. This sometimes solves the issue. It is also possible
that we have designated an existing image for this ASIN as read-only to avoid unwanted
overwrites. If this happens, please click Contact Us.

Before using a corrected file, verify that it can be viewed on your computer using a preview or
image editing program.

Rejection 13 - IMAGE DIMENSIONS TOO SMALL

We will reject an image if the longest side is smaller than 500 pixels.
Your image should meet the format requirements. To verify the image size, right-click the image
file and click Properties. If your image is less than 500 pixels on its largest side, you will need to
obtain a larger photograph or scan. Images that are larger than 1000 pixels will enable zoom
functionality on the site.

Rejection 14 - AUTHORITATIVE IMAGE ALREADY EXISTS

We will reject an image if we prefer to use an image that already exists for this product.

Rejection 15 - RESUBMISSION OF PREVIOUSLY ACCEPTED/REJECTED IMAGES

We will reject an image if the same exact file is already successfully online, is currently in the
Quality Assurance queue, or was previously rejected/accepted for this ASIN.
Every uploaded image has its own unique identifier that belongs only to that exact image file. This
rejection code is only activated when that unique identifier is recognized as having already been
uploaded previously. Make sure that you do not upload the exact same image for the same ASIN
multiple times.
If your ASIN does not have an image on the website, it is probably due to one of the
following reasons.
Image was automatically rejected by the system because it did not meet file formatting,
naming, or size requirements
Images was rejected during Quality Assurance
Image was replaced by a new image from a different source
If you meant to upload a new image, upload the new file from your computer.

again later.

Rejection 17 - IMAGE WITH IDENTICAL ASIN AND VARIANT ALREADY QUEUED FOR REVIEW

Vendor/Advantage Central while your image was still queued for review.
A newer image takes precedence over older images that were being reviewed.

Troubleshoot image uploads

Here are some troubleshooting tips for common image upload issues and questions.
Issue

Troubleshooting solution

An image you uploaded is not yet active Your image will generally show up a short time after the
on the site
upload, unless the system detects an issue with your file
and rejects it, or your image is trying to overwrite an
existing image from another source Quality Assurance
(QA) specialists will determine if your image should
overwrite the current image usually completed within
1-2 business days.
An image you previously uploaded is no
longer on the site

This is most likely because your image didnt meet the

site standards or the technical requirements. Or, the
image may have been replaced by another image from a
different source. Images on Amazon come from a variety
of sources and any image can be replaced by a new
uploaded image that meets our requirements.. The
reason for any errors or rejections can be found in the
Notes section of the status page.

Incorrect file name error

If you receive an Incorrect file name error, but you

followed the naming convention outlined below, your
product may not yet be active in the Amazon catalog. If
you just uploaded your product, you have to wait for the
product to show up via search or browse in the Amazon
catalog before you can upload an image for that product.

Upload multiple images

You can upload multiple image files in a zipped folder

(WinZip).

Replace old images

As long as you have a replacement image already

available, there is no need to have an image removed.
Simply upload the replacement image as if you were
adding a new image for a product. Our upload system will
automatically detect that this is an updated image and
will process the image accordingly. Replacement images
will go into a pending state in the upload report until the
image is reviewed by our team to ensure that it meets
our site standards; this usually occurs within 2 to 3
business days. Once the review has completed, the
upload report will be updated with the final status of the
image.
