Orwell separates everyone in London into three groups. At


the bottom are the proles. the middle is the , and the top is
the Party. The party workers are represented by blue
overalls. Blue overalls are usually worn by the hard
working people of america. The proles wear torn clothes or
clothes that are ill fitting. These types of clothes represent
the poor, the people who can not afford to live the good
life.

Answers to questions relating to your prompt: Question 3.The two different social groups
that are being discussed are the party workers and the proles. The party workers are
represented by blue overalls and nice living conditions while the proles are represented
by tattered clothing and poor living conditions. The reason they are depicted this way is
because the party workers are meant to be shown respect and to show that they are
important and the proles are to not get respect and seen as low lives. The party workers

receive good jobs from the government that pay well and the proles dont have good
paying jobs instead they have to sell their bodies to live.

How the proles can bring down the party. The proles have
feelings, they are more of a human being then we are. They
can think for themselves and voice their opinion without
trouble.
If there is hope, Winston writes, it lies in the proles.
Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and

Separation of Social Groups in 1984
How and why is a social group represented in a particular way?
George Orwell creates two social groups in 1984. The Proles and the Party Workers. He
describes the workers as wearing blue overalls, the color of the party while the proles wear dirty
and tattered clothing. The party workers live in nice buildings and the proles live on the side of
town that is rundown always getting bombed. The party workers are treated better than the proles,
they receive more benefits from Big Brother while the proles have none and most times the only
job a prole has is to sell their bodies because the government will not hire them. The social
groups are separated by power, thoughts, and treatment. The following are examples of how
Orwell does a good job at describing each of them and making them all seem as though they are
important parts of the story line.
The party workers wear blue overalls to work, no matter what department they work in
they all wear the blue overalls. emphasized by the blue overalls which were the uniform of the
party (Orwell 4 Kindle Version). The proles wear tattered clothing and live in rundown houses in
areas that are always getting bombed.The party workers have better clothing than the proles
because they are more important than the proles. The proles are seen as undesirable, nobody
working for Big Brother wants to be a prole so they follow the laws without question.

The Party represents the power that they hold above all of the people living in London.
The party shows its power when they take Winston to Room 101 after he gets arrested and is
interrogated by OBrien. When OBrien ask where the past exist Winston answers that they are in
the memories and records of the people and OBrien replies we,the party, control all records,and
we control all memories. Then we control the past, do we not?(Orwell 313 Kindle Version). As
OBrien continues to ask questions Winston continues to defy him and this results in Winston
receiving shocks and they keep increasing every time Winston answers a question wrong. The
party is able to show its power over what people think, if you think different from the party then
the party tries to fix you so that you think they way they want you to think.
The proles are the other social group that are in 1984. The proles live in the dirtier part of
London and are not treated as nice as the party workers are. The part of town in which the proles
live is constantly getting bombed, almost every week there are dead proles after every bombing.
Unlike the party workers the proles thoughts are not monitored as much and they also dont get
into as much trouble as the party workers. When Winston writes in his diary he writes if there is
hope, it lies in the proles,what Winston means is that is there is ever any hope of bringing the
party down then it lies within the proles because they are able to freely think and speak the way
they want to(Orwell 89 Kindle Version). Winston also says that Until they become conscious
they will never rebel, and until after they rebelled they cannot become conscious meaning that
they will not rebel until it is too late, they will not realize that they can bring down the party until
too much damage is caused by Big Brother(Orwell 90 Kindle Version).
Over all the social groups are separated by jobs, clothing, housing, and benefits that they
receive from Big Brother. Orwell manages to capture what our society looked liked at this time
period. The higher up that you were in a government job meant how much respect you were
given, where you lived, and how you dressed. The lower you were in a government job or if you
had no job at all determined where you live, clothing,and respect. The lower you were the more
chance you had at living in a run down house with old clothes and little to no respect from others

around you. The higher up you were ment that you received more respect, better living
conditions, and newer clothing. It also meant that you had more benefits when it came to how the
government treated you. Orwell manages to capture all of these things in this book. He was able
to imagine what the future looked like after the war. Orwell paints a picture of how the world
could have been, constant monitoring of all thoughts, elimination of those who thought
differently, and a complete and utter dictatorship. The social groups would be even further
separated by treatment from the government. Freedom would be limited to what the government
qualifies as freedom, examples such as why and who you can marry, whether or not you can get a
divorce, how to care for your children and the education that they receive.
