Spunky.Lighthearted.Excited.ThesecharacteristicsillustrateGretchenPavelich,recent8thgradegraduateofSt.
ClareofAssisi.Withanimpressiveschedulefilledwithnumerousathleticandacademicpursuits,Pavelich
exemplifiesthecharacterofmanytraditionalleadersthroughnontraditionalavenues.Gretchenfollowsherpassions
andpavesthewayforotherstobreakmoldsandpursuewhatmakesthemhappy.
PavingtheWay
Insixthgrade,Gretchendecidedtotakeherloveforthegameoffootballtothenextlevelbyjoiningherschool's
footballteam.Byhersecondyearontheteam,therewerefourothergirlsplayinginherleague.Gretchen'scoaches
didn'tknowwheretoplayherwhenshefirsttriedout,andfoundthatherskillofcontainingopponentsledherto
excelasdefensiveendandblitzinglinebacker.

*YLCisacollaborationof2030studentsfrombothpublicandprivatehighschoolsinEagleCounty.
*YLCfocusesonleadershipdevelopment,educationandteamworkandaddressingyouthandcommunityissuesinEagle
County.
*YLCmembersserveanadvisorycapacity,providingfeedbacktoimproveyouthservicesinthecommunity.
*YLCservesasastudentledgroupthatprovidesanavenueforyouthtobeheard,andtakealeadershiproletoproduce
positivechangesinthecommunity.
Activities:
Forthe20152016schoolyear,monthlymeetingswillfocusonleadershipdevelopment,corevalueexploration,advisingoncommunity
programs,needs&strategies.MonthlyeveningmeetingswillrotatebetweenEdwardsandEaglefrom6:308:00pm.Daysoftheweekvary
fromWednesdaytoThursdayevenings.
TherewillbeahalfdayretreatinSeptembertokickofftheyear.Teambuildingandleadershipdevelopmentactivitieswillbeapartofthe
retreataswellasselectingissuesofinterestandpotentialactivitiesfortheyear.

SummerFoodServiceforAllChildren
EagleCounty'spilotSummerFoodServiceProgram(SFSP)willprovidemorethan15,000
mealstolowincomechildren,whooftengohungryinthesummerwhenschoollunchprograms
endandfamilybudgetsgettighter.TheInteGreat!poweredprogramcoincideswithEagleCountySchool'sGreatStartpreschoolandtheYouthFoundation's
SummerPwrHrs.Twoofthreesummersiteswillbeopentothecommunity,whereallchildrenages0to18yearsoldwillbeautomaticallyeligibleforafree
meal.Wearerequestingsupportintwoways:
Volunteers:Withthedonationofyourlunchhour,achildwillhaveaccesstoahealthymeal.Asavolunteer,youmaybewelcominganddirectingfamilies,
countingattendance,servingfruitsandvegetables,helpinggetthewordoutabouttheprogram,orprovidingawarm,lovingadultpresenceinthelunchroom.

TheinternationaltripwilltakeplaceinDecember2015,a16dayadventuretoEastEurope.Thetripwillbemadeupof2teams,around20adultchaperones,a
doctorandcoaches,playing12gamesin15days.TheeightcitytourwillfocusonWWIIhistoryandlocalculture.WhileinEuropetheVIHplayerswill
participateinexchangeswithlocalplayers.Thegoalistoeducatetheyouthonglobalhistoryandprovideperspective.HighlightswillincludeastopinIceland
andthenaflightintomainlandEuropeforabustourwithstopsin,Prague,CZ.SouthernandEasternCZ,Auschwitz,Poland.andFrankfurtGermany.If
fundraisingallowsweplantoringinthenewyearinSwedenwithhockeygamesandatourofStockholm.

seektreatment. Mentalhealthchallengesanddisorderscanhaveaseriousimpactonadolescentdevelopment.Anunderstandingofthechangesthatoccurduring
adolescencecanenableadultstodistinguishbetweenayoungpersonstrugglingwithamentalhealth

challengeormentalhealthdisorderorsimplyexperiencingnormal,developmentalchanges.
Throughan8hourpubliceducationprogram,YouthMentalHealthFirstAid(YMHFA)USAintroduces
participantstotheuniqueriskfactorsandwarningsignsofmentalhealthproblemsinadolescents,builds
understandingoftheimportanceofearlyintervention,andteachesindividualshowtohelpan
adolescentincrisisorexperiencingamentalhealthchallenge.MentalHealthFirstAid(MHFA)usesrole
playingandsimulationstodemonstratehowtoassessamentalhealthcrisisselectinterventionsand

provideinitialhelpandconnectyoungpeopletoprofessional,peer,social,andselfhelpcare.
Byapplyingacorefivestepactionplanparticipantslearntosupportayouthdevelopingsignsand
symptomsofamentalillnessorinanemotionalcrisis.

DangerousAppsWarningforEagleCountyParents
Astechnologycontinuestogrowandevolve,ouryouthalsogrowwiththesetechtrends.Someofthese
appsforsmartphonesarecapableoflinkingyourchildtoeasierwaysofbullyingorbeingbullied,harass
oneanotherorlinkthemtounknownadultsorsexualpredators.
AlloftheseAppsprovidedifferentservices.Forinstance"Poof!"isanappthathidesotherappsonyour
phone,atfirstglanceofphonescreenaniconwhichlookslikeahomescreenwilltakeyoutoanother
screenwithallofthehiddenapps.Snapchat,Tinder,ChatRoulette,andDownareAppsthatconnectyou
withothersandimages/videocanbeshared.Theseareusuallysexualinnature.Whisper,Omegel,Kik,
YikYakandVineallowstheusertopostandleaveanonymousmessagesusuallydirectlycorrelatedwithbullyingorspreadinghurtfully/falserumors.Finally,VoxerandBurnercanhide
yourcellphonenumberandgenerateanotherone.Theseappshavebeenusedinarecentcasetostalk,harassandbullyindividuals.
Thefirstdefenseandsafetyofourchildrenisalwayshavinganopendialoguewithyourchild.Havingarelationshipoftrustandhonestywillfosterdiscussionsaroundtheirsocialmedia
accountsandsmartphonebehavior.Theseappscanandarebeingusedtobully,harass,sociallyhurtothers.Ourchildrenalsounknowinglymightbeconnectingto
predators.ItistherecommendationoftheEaglePoliceDepartmenttoknowyourchild'sSocialMediaaccountpasswordsandbeawareofappsthattheymightbeusing
ontheirsmartphones/tabletsetc.
