Journey of a Sure Change

Introduction
Welcome back to the I Grow class, in the new class: Journey of a Sure Change
We have just well finished the beginning class, Journey of a Sure Salvation. We will enter phase D1 with a passionate desire to ever increase the quality of our teaching.
Therefore, THIS I GROW TEACHERS MANUAL for this class has been designed in such a way to
help you better teach your I Grow class.
The change consists of:
1. The lay out of your teachers manual is now the combination between the teachers guide and
students worksheet. The teachers guide is always on the left side and the students worksheet is
on the right side, so that you will know what to do or say and at the same time you can also follow
the students worksheet on the right side. Thus, you only need to carry one book to your I Grow
class.
2. All the instructions for you are in parentheses, printed in italic and bold to help you know which
part you dont need to read or say.
3. In this material, there are pictures on both left and right pages to make the material more attractive
and easier to remember. Also, those pictures are exactly the same with the pictures on the
transparency sheet or power point presentation (PPT) for your visual aid.
4. This new teaching method is more dynamic and it emphasizes on TWO-WAY
COMMUNICATION. It means, you need to give more opportunities for your I Grow students to
ask and discuss Also, at certain point in the lesson you will see instructions for discussion in
parenthesis and printed in bold and italic.
All the best for your class! God bless you.

Chapter 1 lesson I

The Dynamics of Change

(OHP : D1.1 Journey of a Sure Change)
(Narration:)
Welcome to JOURNEY OF A SURE CHANGE class and congratulations to those who have completed the
previous class, JOURNEY OF A SURE SALVATION. This is the phase of spiritual growth that every
believer should be expecting, which is to pursue a real change in character and conduct in his/her daily life. This
is important, because without change in our character, we will never become effective as Gods witness. That
means, if others do not see the real change in our lives, it will be difficult for them to be drawn to the Gospel of
Christ. When as believers we still have characters such as stinginess, arrogance, lies, full of bitterness, anxiety,
fear, etc, then the non-believers will call Christians as hypocrites.
In Short, our repentances is not complete without the transformation of our character.
(OHP : D1.2 Lesson contents)
(Narasi :)
In this new class we will learn 11 lessons: .. (read from your transparency sheet or PPT)
(OHP : D1.3 Lesson 1 Objectives)
(Narasi :) The goals of lesson one , THE DYNAMICS OF CHANGE, are:

1. Understanding the benefits of change

2. Recognizing the obstacles towards change
3. Understanding the steps to bring about change with God

(OHP : D1.4 NO CHANGE means disaster!)

(Narration:)
One night, the captain of a ship saw a bright light, as if a light of
another ship coming towards him. The captain commanded his
communication officer to send morse code to the other ship by means
of light saying: Change your direction 10 degrees south. They soon
got the answer, Change your direction 10 degrees north. The captain
then replied with a morse light, I am a captain. Change your direction
to south, which was responded directly, I am a first class sailorman.
Change your direction north
This made the captain mad and anxious that he gave a sign and
answered, I say, change your direction south. I am leading a warship. It was soon received and responded, I
have said, change your direction north. I am in the lighthouse. No change means disaster!
(Discuss with the students:)
Have you ever tried to change your spouse when you are not willing to change yourself?

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

Life is always about change. Summer changes to winter season; technology keeps on getting more
sophisticated; the world is entering the era of globalization; even people change. Many people dislike
change because to change means letting go the old, whether they are old habits, old friends, or other
old things that have become parts of their lives. The world hates changes, when that is the only way
to bring improvement. There is always a price to pay in order to change we must be willing to lose
something that we already have. However, the price that we have to pay for our unwillingness to
change is even greater! Imagine if everyone else is already using computer while your company insists
on using the typewriter. Or if every office has a fax machine yet your office still depends on the
regular mail. Many business opportunities that you have to quickly take on will pass you by and you
will suffer a big loss!

I.

The Benefits of Change

(Narration:)
Now the issue is, what benefits do we have when we change? Before we find the answer, lets read what the
Word says about this in 2 Peter 1:3-11.

As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and
godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and
virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious
promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature,
having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But also
for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue
knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to
perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly
kindness. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither
barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he
who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has
forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Therefore, brethren, be
even more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you do
these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to
you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. (2 Peter 1:3-11)
What did Peter teach us in his letter?
(Discuss, then continue)
In his letter, Peter wanted to shake comfortable believers. They listen to deceiving teachers who
taught them that salvation is not based on good deeds, therefore they can live according to their own
desires. Peter said that those people had to change otherwise they would stumble and loose their rights
to enter into the Kingdom of God. Peter stressed on the importance of change (verse 5) to fulfill the
call of God and not to remain silent. So what benefits do we have from that change?

(Let the POP students think of the answer first, before you show them the next transparent sheet).

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

(OHP : D1.5 The Benefits of Change)

(Narration:)
When we change, we can be:

1. EFFECTIVE AND PRODUCTIVE

The Word of God in 2 Peter 1:8 says:
For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and
unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:8)
The change that God inspires will change you to become an effective and productive person. Being an effective
person is a training process everyone must go through, taking every positive opportunity. Being effective and
productive will take you to the next step, that is

2. SUCCESS
2 Peter 1:8 - For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the
knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Being successful is the desire every human being and it is also Gods desire in creating man in this world.
Similar to the first principle above, success is not automatic; it is a process of continual change with Jesus
Christ. The success that Jesus gives us covers the areas of personal, family, business, health, financial, and
most importantly the eternal success, which is

3. THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST

The previous scripture promised us of the knowledge of Christ:
(Note for teacher: share your testimony of how the knowledge of Christ brought you to success in
life.)
Christ is the source of inspiration for change in man that will take you to become an effective,
productive, and successful person. However, Gods greatest desire in motivating change in the life a
person is so that he/she can come know Him.
Paul said in Philippians 3:8 that to know Him is a much more excellent matter

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

But indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for
whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain
Christ(Philippians.3:8)
The knowledge of God will determine how you live your life. One who knows God has a greater
confidence when facing fear, anxiety, stress, or depression because he/she knows who takes care of
him/her. One who knows God will never be tossed around by the economic crisis, political condition,
rumors of riots, because he/she knows who protects him/her. One who knows God has no fear of his/her
future because s/he knows who holds the future. One who knows God will be confident and strong,
someone full of joy and peace. The knowledge of Christ will give us the right perspective of life. Nothing
is more important than knowing God.

II.

Change: Easy or Difficult?

(OHP : D1.6 Change, easy or difficult?)

(Narration:)
Is it easy or difficult to change?

The answer is: VERY DIFFICULT

Why is it difficult?
(Discuss:)
Each of us must have a personal experience on the difficulty of change, evev though we already know that we
will suffer the loss if we refuse to change.
In this good opportunity, I encourage you to share your testimony to all of us here. I will begin with my own
testimony.
(Share your testimony while struggling with the change you needed to go outwork).
(Narration:)
Now is your turn to share your testimony to the class. Who wants to start?

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

(Give enough time for 1-2 I Grow students to share their experience)
(Narration:)

So based on our personal experience, there are several things that hinder a person to change:
1.
2.
3.

Because they dont understand the importance of change

Because they are comfortable with the old ways and unwilling to learn new things
Because there are sacrifices that they have to make in order to change (they would lose
something, they would have to work hard, etc.)

(Add more reasons of why change is difficult based on the result of the previous discussion:)

From your discussion and sharing, we can add more reasons of why change is difficult for people:
4.

______________________________________

5.

______________________________________

6.

______________________________________ etc.

Change is not automatic and easy, that is why people are hesitant to change, regardless of the fact that change
will continue to take place.

Zig Ziglar:
Life is hard,
but if you are hard to yourself

life will give you a good reward and appreciation

III.

Change: A Choice or A Must?

(OHP : D1.7 Change, A Choice or a Must?)

(Narration:)
Is change a choice or a must?
(discuss, then continue)
The answer is: MUST
(Narration:) As we know in 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, man is made of three parts:
1. Spirit
2. Soul
3. Body
(Discuss: ) What is the meaning of spirit, soul and body?

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

(OHP : D1.7 Spirit, Soul, Body)

(Narration:)
1.

The Body consists of our physical body such as

hand, foot, etc.

2.

3.

The Soul consists of our mind, will, and emotion.

-

Our mind processes all information we receive

Our will communicates what we want

Our emotion expresses our feelings

The spirit is the part of our being wherein God can speak and relate to man.

When you were born again, the Spirit of God raised your spirit that was once dead, so that the
Spirit of God can dwell in your spirit. The Spirit of God in you wants to bring you to change
and to the salvation of your soul and body.

The Old Man Becomes The New Man

(OHP : D1.8 Old Man ~> New Man )

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

(Narration:)
Do not be surprised upon seeing an arrogant Christian, deceiving Christian, drunk Christian,
etc. It is very sad, isnt it? Why? Because their soul has not be sanctified.
Change is a must so that you can become an honest Christian, humble Christian, joyful
Christian, etc.
Our character, attitude, and habits does not change in a twinkling of an eye when we accepted
Jesus, therefore Paul said that we have to work out our salvation:
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much
more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12a).

IV.

Change, Now or Later?

(Narration:)
The next question now is, do we change later or do we have to change now?
(Discuss, then continue)
(OHP : D1.9 Change, now or later?)

The answer is: NOW!

Let me tell you a story of

The TIME Bank

If your bank gives you a credit of $86,400 every day that you have to spent every cent given to
you or otherwise the credit would be cancelled. Surely you will spend every cent you have, wont
you? Likewise, you have a bank that gives you similar credit; it is called TIME. Each day God
gives you a credit of 86,400 seconds and every night the unused seconds will be deleted/gone; you
cannot use them for the following day. So, every second that is not used to build something
positive will just fly away. Therefore, live the most the time you have TODAY! Change NOW.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

Therefore . . .

Why Wait? Do It Now!

Glenn McIntyres Testimony
There is a testimony of a policeman named Glenn McIntyre, who suffered an accident. This story is
taken from the Chicken Soup for the soul and I will read it to you:
My father said that there must be a good reason why God created TODAY, and I believe that.
I live in Laguna Beach, California, and I love sports a lot. While other kids were sitting in front of
their TV, I have begun to think of how I could be independent, travel around this country and plan my
future. I started working at the age of 10, and when I was 15, I work three jobs after school. I bought a
motorbike and it was really fun! Not only did I ride my motorbike from and to work but I enjoyed the
ride on the motorbike itself.
At the age of 17, I went to Alaska, which was about 1000 miles away, alone, on my motorbike!
It has been my dream to travel around America on a motorbike. My heart said to me, if I didnt do it
now, there would be no more chance. I would soon go to university, get married, work, and there
would be no more chance to travel on my motorbike. So, at the age of 17, with $1400, I traveled the
United States on my motorbike. I met a lot of people, enjoyed beautiful sceneries, and I thanked God
for every beauty and opportunities I could enjoy. It was a very incredible adventure!
At the age of 23, I had an accident being hit by a drunk driver. In a matter of seconds, I could
have not been survived. At that time I was a policeman, married, and our financial situation was very
good, but just in a few seconds my future changed.
I was hospitalized for eight months, was divorced, I had to get used to the pain, and I could not
walk nor work. It was as if I had no more future. I looked back, thinking how lucky I was to ever
travel around the US. In every trip I always said to myself, Do it now, enjoy what you have, because
there might be no more chance.
After that accident, my father told me that God had a good plan behind my disablement. I
believe that and I became a stronger man. Soon I returned to the police department as an administrator,
bought a house and got married. I also had a consultant business and I became a professional speaker.
My dad was right; God had a good plan. More important, I tell myself to be thankful for this life and if
there is anything I can do, I will do it NOW!
Thus, do not delay your commitment to change. To delay means to miss a golden opportunity.
Do it now, for if you delay, you have to pay a very costly price!

Again, Zig Ziglar has something we need to hear:

In doing the positive action
do not wait until you feel like doing it.
Do it first then you will feel the joy of your doing. (Zig Ziglar)

Invest Into Your Life

(OHP : D1.10 Invest Into Your Life)

(Narration:)
To change your OUTPUT you first need to change your INPUT
You know the term garbage in garbage out.
Unfortunately, this is a negative statement. The positive
one will be: quality in quality out. So, to change your
output you first need to change the input in your life.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble,
whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are
lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if
there is anything praiseworthy meditate on these things (Philippians
4:8)
(Write down in your note 6-10 greatest sources of input in your life (TV, newspaper, wife/husband,
etc.). Make a circular diagram (pie chart) in accordance to the level of influence of each source of
input in your life, then write down whether the input is positive or negative.)
(Instruct all the students:)
Make a circle as below, describing the level of influence of each source of input in your life, then
write down whether the input is positive or negative.

Is there anyone who wants to share with the class about the kind of input that influence
his/her life?

God consistently gives us divine opportunities so He can make an investment in our lives.
Through His Word, which has a great positive, God invests is us power to overcome every
negative input that has entered our life. The Word of God is the right source of investment in
your life.
In this class, you will be taken to develop your insight to change. We all live under the same
blue sky, yet not all of us have the same sight. Thus, broaden your insight so that you can see
the great potentials that God has invested into your life and in your surroundings, through the
change in you. You have changed

Lesson II

COME OUT OF PRISON!

(OHP : D1.13 Target Lesson 2)
(Narration:)
In line with the title of todays lesson: COME OUT OF PRISON!, today we will learn about:

1. What prison is
2. Four types of human prison of this age

3. Keys of Truth for your freedom

(OHP : D1.14 An Eagle)

(Narration:)
An eagle was caught and tied with a 4-meter rope to
a pole. Each time the eagle tried to free itself and fly
high, the rope hurt its leg. Eventually, the eagle got
used to flying 4 meter high. For years, the eagle
only flew around the rope that was not longer than 4
meters, until one day the master decided to release
the eagle.
The master cut the rope, but the eagle did not fly to
free itself. It only flew around the pole as usual, no
higher than 4 meters. It turned out that after being
tied for years and suffered the pain on its leg each
time it tried to free itself, the eagle no longer had
the courage to soar, although he was no longer tied!
Our lives are sometimes like this eagle; many things happened to us or around us that made us
unable to soar high, regardless of the fact that we are born-again believers! It seems like we are
imprisoned, although without bars. Why?
(Note for teacher: You can make a short discussion)

Journey of a Sure Change

Do you have traumas of the past that have stopped you from soaring high?

Prison Yes, Thats The Way It Is

(Narration:)
Someone please read Psalm 79:11
Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You; according to the greatness of Your power

Have you ever felt it?

Have you ever groaned with loud groans, as if you were a prisoner and wanted to be free, yet you were
helpless!
PRISON!!! What picture do you have in mind? Who wants to tell the whole class?

(Note for teacher: the students discussion to give their comments)

II. Why Are People Imprisoned?

(OHP : D1.16 Why .)
(Narration:)
No one wants to be imprisoned yet some people live in there, although
they are not aware of it. Not in physical prison with steel bars but the
prisons of spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places
(Ephesians 6:12).
Why are people imprisoned?
1. Because of their own mistakes!
For example, if someone commits fraud, commits murder or does other things that break the law, he
or she can be put in prison.
2. Because of other peoples mistakes!
Someone can also be imprisoned because of other peoples mistakes he was accused and
imprisoned although he commits no crime.
3. Because of the accusations that have not be proven!
For example, some people were arrested due to the reports from others regarding the crime they
might commit, although it has not been proven yet.
4. Because he is waiting for the trial!
Both conflicting sides have handed over their case to the court and they are awaiting trial.

Nobody wants to be put in prison. However, some people do live in prison although they do not
realize it. Not in the prison with bars but in the prison of their mind or soul. They are not free,
squeezed in the small and dark cell. For example, there are people who are imprisoned by fear, the
past, etc. Some others are imprisoned by their own mistakes, for example: sin. There are people
who are imprisoned by others, such as terror or fear that has been planted from the childhood.
There are many kinds of modern prisons but of course we all want to come out of our prisons, if

Journey of a Sure Change

there is any. In this class, we will recognize different kinds of prisons in the lives of modern man
and how to come out of those prisons.
III. Recognize the Four PRIMARY PRISONS OF HUMAN and Get the KEYS OF
TRUTH to YOUR FREEDOM.
(OHP : D1.17 Recognize four)

PRISON

COME OUT OF PRISON

(Narration:) There are four primary prisons of man. The first one is:

1. The Prison of OUR CONDUCT

The same way people are imprisoned for the crimes they commit, we can also be imprisoned for what we do,
whether purposely or accidentally. For example:

a. The prison of SIN

You are in this prison when you sin, causing you to You can come out of this prison if you confess your
sins and repent, so that you receive forgiveness and
feel that there is a wall that separates you from God.
restoration of your relationship with God.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness (1 Johns 1:9)

Where there is sin, there is grace.

b. The prison of GUILT

Guilt that hovers over us and keeps us away from God The cure is simple: if you confess your sins, God will
can cause us to live in lies by pretending to live forgive you and no longer remember your sins. So,
you do not need to feel guilty anymore.
according to the standard that we set ourselves.
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom
the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose
spirit there is no guilt (Psalm 32:1-2)

c. The prison of FAILURE

When God forgives you and casts away your sins

to the sea, He put up a billboard:
No Fishing Here

Failure is not a new thing because everyone must

have gone through it. The prison of failure gives you
the sense of defeat, helplessness, and inability or fear Remember that God is the source of your success:
to try again.
I can all things through Christ who strengthens me
(Philippians 4:13)

Journey of a Sure Change

PRISON

COMING OUT OF PRISON

(OHP : D1.18 The prison of OUR MIND)

(Narration:)
2. The prison of Our Mind
So great is the role of our minds that a person once said that our mind is the software that programs our lives.
However, imprisoned mind will put that person in prison. There are three prisons of our mind:

a. The prison of THE PAST

We cannot change what has already happened. And

actually:

If there is any past incident that still feels real to you

today and affects you negatively, it means you are
still in the prison of your past.

Not what happens to you that matters

but what happens in you.
Make a decision to forget the past:
forgetting those things which are behind and
reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I
press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call
of God in Christ Jesus(Philippians 3:13-14)

b. The prison of WORMS

Someone is definitely in this prison if s/he keeps God created you in His likeness and image, and He will
saying, I am nothing, I am ugly, and therefore, I help you to succeed.
cant, I have no rights, etc.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
for good works, which God prepared beforehand that
we should walk in them(Ephesians 2:10)

Man is designed for achievement,

Planned to succeed,
And planted with the seed of greatness.

c. The prison of PERFECTION

If you feel like you, your fellow staff, family, friends,
or others have to be perfect, you are in the prison of
perfection.

God accepts you just the way you are, even Jesus died
for us while we were still sinners.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
(Romans 5:8)

If God accepts you just the way you are, can you accept
yourself as you are and others as they are?
Life does not force us to be the best but it
encourages us to try our best.

PRISON

COMING OUT OF PRISON

(OHP : D1.19 3. The prions of MAN)

(Narration:)
Our relationship with others can also be a prison to us if we are not careful. Those prisons are:

a. The prison of FEAR

The sense of being threatened and over-anxious for The solution is simple. If we can see God bigger than
things that are yet to happen (example: accident) or the situation that threatens us, our fear will disappear.
things that are actually safe (example: phobia/ Furthermore God promised us:
excessive fear of the crowd or certain animals)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power
and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)
Do not judge the day by looking at weather.
Dark clouds do not mean that it is going to rain, and if
the sun shines brightly it does not mean that the day
will be hot. Thus, do not depend your feeling and future
on the weather that are not certain to happen.

b. The prison of PUBLIC OPINION

The definition of this prison is the need to always
please other people, and to identify him/herself based
on what people say instead of what God says through
His Word.

Regardless of what people say, Paul always measures

according to the Word:
But with me it is a very small thing that I should be
judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not
even judge myself (1 Corinthians 4:3)
God has given you an A,
even before you took the class.

c. The prison of OBLIGATION

If you think that there is solution to every problem, Relaxyou do not have to solve all the problems in the
and that you are responsible to solve that problem, world.
then you are in the prison of Obligation.
There is only one Savior of the world
and it is not me!
Let God rule the world and cast all your cares to Him:
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I
am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest
for your souls (Matthew 11:29)

(OHP : D1.20 4. The prison of Legalism)

(Narration:)
To follow the rule or to obey someone is important, yet if following the rules has become more
important than everything, then we have been trapped in the prison of legalism:

a. The prison of RULES

(OHP : D1.21 - Victor Seribriakoff)

(Narration:)
Victor Seribriakoff
When Victor Seribriakoff was 15, his teacher said that he
would never pass the school and so it would be better to
quit school so that he could learn how to do business.
Victor accepted that advice and for the next 17 years he did many ineffective things. Someone told him that
he was useless and for 17 years he acted uselessly.
When he was 32, however, a great change happened. His IQ test said that his IQ was as high as 161. Since
then, he acted like a genius. He wrote books, created things and earned patent rights, and became a
successful businessman. His most important achievement might be when he was elected the chairman of
International Mensa Society, a group of people whose IQ were above 130.

Victor Seribriakoffs story might make you think of how such a genius could act hopelessly just
because someone else said so. It is obvious that Victor did not obtain additional sudden intelligence
or much new knowledge he simply needed to know who he was, had the confidence and that
encouraged him to be successful.
Once you know who you are, that you are the children of God who have been set free and are no
longer imprisoned, then you can develop your God-given potentials in Him. You can come out of
that prison NOW!

Lesson III

SEVEN KEYS OF CHANGE

(OHP : D1.23 Target Lesson 3)

(Narration :)
Today we will begin lesson 3 of Journey of a Sure Change
Class. We will learn about the 7 keys of change. Our target lessons today
are:
1. Discover the gold in your life
2. Seven keys of change for your success.
3. Why some people do not receive BREAKTHROUGH.
4. Three FOCUSES that will change your life.
5. Gods MIRACLES & BLESSINGS for you.

(OHP : B1.24 Gold mine)

Tambang Emas
After learning the dynamics of change and the prisons of life, you
definitely do not want to live in prison. Remember, prison is a place of darkness a small, tight and
damp place where there is no freedom. Prison is not where you belong to nor it is your destination.
The gold mine is your destination:
Andrew Carnegie was one of the most successful men in America.
He was a Scotland immigrant who came to America when he was little. He did various kinds of works until
he finally owned the biggest steel factory in America. Once he had 43 millionaires worked for him. There
werent many millionaires back at that time. One million dollars at that time might equal 20 million dollars
today.
A reporter asked Andrew Carnegie how he could hire 43 millionaires. Carnegie said that those people were
not millionaires when they first worked for him but they became millionaires after they worked for him. The
next question was, How did you build these people that they were so valuable and you paid them so high?
Carnegie replied that people were built in the same was as a gold mine. When gold was dug, tons of mud
and dirts had to be cleared to get one ounce of gold; yet people did not dig to find the mud they dug to find
the gold. Likewise within every person there are gold to be found, yet the mud has to be cleared first.

How many of you are willing to bring the gold out of the mine of your life? Of course, you have to
dig and get rid of the mud of your life.

Journey of a Sure Change

19

Teachers Manual

This class is designed to find the gold in your life. In this lesson, we will give you the seven keys of
change that you will continue to use.
(OHP : D1.25 - 7 keys of change)

(Narration:)
These seven keys were adapted from the story of King Jehosaphat and the tribe of Judah who were attacked
by three nations. They were in great fear but they exercised these keys that eventually led them to
breakthrough and victory. The seven keys are the following:

I.

Believe in BREAKTHROUGH
(1) It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them
besides the Ammonites, came to Bethel against Jehosaphat. (2) Then some came and told
Jehosaphat, saying, A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and
they are in Hazazon Tamar (which is En Gedi). (3) And Jehosaphat feared, and set himself to seek
the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. (4) So Judah gathered together to us help
from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord (2 Chr. 20:1-4)

Humanly speaking, it was obvious that Judah would definitely lose, and that was why Jehosaphat was
terrified. However, Jehosaphat believed that there must be breakthrough, therefore he and the whole nation
came before God.
Do you believe in breakthrough? Why do some people remain in prison and have no breakthrough? There
are some reasons why people do not experience breakthrough:

1. Some people want us to be imprisoned

Of course, Jehosaphats enemy would want Judah to be terrified so that they lose the battle even
before they fight. Sometimes we are in the prison of sin, failure, fear, or rules, because there are
certain people who want us there.

Others can only hinder you for a while

Only you can hinder yourself forever.
2. Prison is a safe place
In John 5:2-9 there is a story of a lame man in Bethesda. Jesus asked him, Do you want to
be healed? Maybe others thought that a sick person would automatically want to be healed
and those in prison would want to get out of the prison. However, in reality, some people
choose to be sick and they love to stay in their prisons. If you are sick, you dont need to
work, wash, and clean the house. People would not ask for your responsibility, people
would not demand you to be successful, and you would not have to take the risks with your
decisions. However, this sense of security is a false security. Remember, prison is not a
safe place; it is a place of punishment and persecution a dark place.

Opportunity often disguises as hardwork,

Therefore many people fail to recognize it (Ann Landers)

Journey of a Sure Change

20

Teachers Manual

3. Some people enjoy the prison

There are people who choose to stay in prison because they enjoy the punishment. They may think
that they are not good people, therefore they have to be punished. If you think that you have to be
punished, then you will receive the punishment. Even though the fact that God has made you
worthy to receive freedom that He sent His Begotten Son so that you can be free.
4. Prison gives a sense of control
In that little tiny cell, you can easily control everything that is taking place in that cell, compared to
the wide world where many things happen out of your control. Living in the Prison of Bad Past
and using it as an excuse when you fail to do something is so much easier than having to face the
present and future challenges. However, the truth is, in prison, you are controlled by the guards and
the bars. In prison, your life is controlled by failure, fear, past, bitterness, etc.
Do you believe in breakthrough? Do you desire breakthrough? Breakthrough is waiting for your
faith decision.

There is no problem too big for God to handle, and

There is no man too small for God to take care of.
(OHP : D1.26 Begin to FOCUS)
(Narration:)
The second key that we need to change is:

II.

Begin to FOCUS

Someone please read from 2 Chronicles 20:3-4.

And Jehosaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
(4) So Judah gathered together to us help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to
seek the Lord (2 Chr. 20:3-4)
Jehosaphat did not focus on the three nations that were about to attack him or the strength of Judahs army,
but on seeking God in prayer and fasting.
a. Focus on HIS WORD
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32)

Through His Word, the Holy Spirit renews our minds (Rom. 12:2) so that we can live in His truth and walk
away from the wrong perceptions that have been keeping us in prison. (Note for teacher: share your

testimony of the time when you focus and the Word of God and you were changed)

Journey of a Sure Change

21

Teachers Manual

b. Focus on HIS BLOOD

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins,
according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us
in all wisdom and prudence (Ephesians 1:7-8)
You have been redeemed and forgiven by the blood of Jesus. Through His blood, you were set
free from the prison of sin and guilt. His blood is also a symbol of Gods sacrifice and love,
therefore you do not need to live in the prison of legalism anymore.
c. Focus on HIS NAME
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous run to it and are saved (Proverbs 18:10)
A persons name represents his/her character. The name of God represents His characters:
Jehovah Jireh God who supplies all your needs, who brings you out of the prison of
fear and anxiety.
Jehovah Nissi God is your banner, who brings you out of the prison of fear.

(Note for teacher: you can ask your students to mention other names of God and
what the names mean to them)
There are many more names of God: Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, Everlasting
Father, etc., you can study His names so that you can receive help in times of need.
Where is your focus? If you focus on the problem/challenge that you are facing, you will be
paralyzed. However, if you focus on God, you will receive the strength and power you need to
overcome your problem.

Turn your face to the sun

and you will not see the shadow (Hellen Keller)

(OHP : D1.27 III. Get the REVELATION)

(Narration:)
I would like to ask someone to read 2 Chronicles 20:14-15:
The the Spirif of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of
Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the congregations; and he said, Listen, all you of Judah and
you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehosaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: Do not be afraid nor dismayed
because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but Gods. (2 Chr. 20:14-15)

After Jehosaphat and the tribe of Judah focused on God, they got a revelation on the speific things
they must do to win the battle. Likewise, you need to look at your situation the way God sees you.
Find the wisdom of God, how to solve the problem, and face your challenge.
Why do we have to get the revelation of our true situation? Why dont we just burry it in our lives
and say, Everything is okay?

Journey of a Sure Change

22

Teachers Manual

Hiding a problem without solving it is like keeping a pack of balloons in the water one day they
will emerge. If we run out of energy, the balloons will emerge in different places: sickness,
problem in relationship with others, depression, etc.

Good idea can never replace Gods idea.

(OHP : D1.28 - IV. Get into WORSHIP)

(Narration:)
IV.

Get into WORSHIP

Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathitess and of the children of the Korahitess stood up to
praise the Lord God of Israel with voice loud and high. As they went out before the army and
were saying: Praise the Lord for His mercy endures forever. Now when they began to sing and to
praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come
against Judah; and they were defeated (2 Chr. 20:19-22)
After receiving a revelation of Gods help, Jehosaphat and the tribe of Judah worshipped God
loudly. The enemy was defeted the moment they began to worship God. In your life, after receiving
a revelation in relation to your situation and challenge, the next step to change is through worship:
a.

You will become like the one you worship.

Worship is the place where God can change you. In worship, you will become like the one
you worship. If you see a concert of a well-known singer, you can see that the fans
worshipped their idol. Before the stage they raised their hands to reach wanting to touch
the star; often they shouted his/her name, even cried and became histeric upon seeing their
idol. So strong was that worship that they imitated the fashion and shoes of that wellknown singer, getting the same haircut, and copycat the idol.
Likewise, if a person worships Jesus, he will become like Him. Wosrhip means coming to
God to be transformed to be like Him. Worship means repentance: looking at God and
turning around to follow Him.

Journey of a Sure Change

23

Teachers Manual

In the process of changing, your repentance means that you turn around from the wrong
attitude:
Unforgiving attitude
Being drowned in sadness
Anxiety/fear due to the unbelief of Gods promises, etc.

Worship means coming to God

to be transformed to be like Him

b.

Worship opens the prison doors.

Just like Jehosaphat, your victory begins to happen as you worship God.
Praise and worship helps you focus on the great God, not on your problem.
Praise and worship lifts your soul and encourage you.
Praise and worship expresses your gratitude and will be your strength in facing the
challenge and starting the change.

(OHP: D1.29 Speak PROPHETICALLY)

(Narration:)

V.

Speak and act PROPHETICALLY

And as they rose early in the morning and went out into the
Wildenerness Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehosaphat stood and
said, Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem:
Believe in the Lord, your God, and you shall be established;
believe His prophets, and you shall prosper. " (2 Chr. 20:20)

Although there was no proof yet, Jehosaphat believed in the

revelation that he had received and began to act. With his words he
convinced the people to believe in what they heard and with his
action he called the people to go to war.
a. Speak prophetically
After you were born again, begin to speak like an overcomer. Stop speaking like someone who is still
imprisoned. Some examples of the words of a prisoner that will prevent you from receiving your
freedom and change are:
1. I am not in prison
The reason why someone is in prison is usually because they refuse to admit it, I am not in prison
and I do not feel any pain, disappointment, fear, etc. I am okay. This denial hinders them from
finding the solution to their problems. We need to face challenge and problems, not avoiding or
forgotting their existence.
Journey of a Sure Change

24

Teachers Manual

2. I have to accept this fate

The key to the second prison is the attitude of accepting what is wrong: I have to accept this. I
was like this in the past and now I am this way also. It is hard, but with the grace of God I can
endure. Sounds spiritual but it is incorrect. In a certain culture there is an attitude of accepting
what is happening in our lives patiently because it is considered as the destiny of our lives.
However, in Christianity, we do not believe in humanly destiny we believe in Gods wonderful
plan for us:
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord,
thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and hope(Jeremiah 29:11)
3. I deserve punishment
Another key that holds someone in prison is the sense of guilt that makes them feel that they deserve
punishment. We all deserve to receive the punishment of our sins, but Jesus who was blameless had
taken that punishment for us. So, now you do not need to be punished anymore.

Therefore now there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus

(Romans 8:1)
4. I cannot come out
Is it true that you cannot come out? Is there anything holding you? There are only two possibilities:
you hold yourself to stay in the prison, or there is a demonic power that holds you back. For the first
one, the answer is obvious; you can make the choice to come out. To fight the devil you have been
equipped with the power of God to defeat him:
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of
our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds (2 Corinthians
10:3-4)

If you think you can or if you think you cant,

The possibility is you will be what you think you are. (Henry Ford)
5. I am alone in this suffering
A congregation wanted so much to join the church choir. With excitement, he came to the choir
director and began to be involved in the training and performance. Apparently, this mans voice was
out of tone and very disturbing and some members of the choir began to complain and suggested
that he is expelled from the team. The choir director tried to speak sympathetically but he insisted on
joining the choir team. Complains increased and the choir director had spoken to him a few times,
yet this man refused to stop. Eventually, the choir director contacted the pastor to speak directly to
this man. After finding the right time, the pastor said, Jack, what if you try other ministries because
you dont seem to fit in the choir team. Some people complained about your voice. Jack seriously
replied, They did, pastor? How many people made the complaint anyway? Well, about 8 people,
said the pastor again. With a cheerful face and a big smile Tono replied, Dont worry, pastor. I have
heard 70 people complained about your message, yet you continue to preach, dont you?

Journey of a Sure Change

25

Teachers Manual

Funny story, isnt it. Yet there is something that we can learn from Jack, that he remained positive
and he did not feel alone in his suffering. Do not stay in the self-pity cell. Have you ever felt so
sinful? Others have too. Have you ever been afraid? There are other people who have also felt the
same way. You will be alone if you hang on in your pain and your prison, while others have
attempted to come out. So, leave your prison!

Positive thinking does not mean that you can do everything.

Instead, it means that you can do things far better than
if you do it while thinking negatively. (Zig Ziglar)
Change the way you speak. God created the world with His prophetic word. What you speak can
come true in your life. Your words determine your attitude and then determine your future. Speak
prophetic words. The words of faith will change your life. Prophetic also means the ability to see the
picture of your future, created by the Great Artist, God Himself.

Your words can come to pass

(OHP : D1.30 Act PROPHETICALLY)

(Narration:)
b.

Act prophetically
It means, you take the responsibility over your life instead of dumping it to other people, and begin
real actions to bring change into your life. Examples of irresponsible words:

Because my parents were very disciplined, I became a terrified person

Because my boyfriend cheated on me with another girl, I became lazy and was fired

If only he had not asked me to try it, I wouldnt have smoked now
When you point someone else as the cause, you actually give the responsibility of your life to him/her
and then you feel like you cannot do anything to change your life now. You feel paralyzed and
helpless, while you can actually change!
Take the responsibility and do something today:
Forgive those who have treated you wrong and come out of the prison of past bitterness.
Put more effort, forget your past failures.
Join in church ministry and serve others, then you will find yourself useful and no longer
imprisoned in the prison of worms.

Responsibility begins with me.

MIRACLES belong to you

(OHP : D1.31 MIRACLES)

(Narration:)
Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. For the people of Ammon and Moab stood against the
inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end to the inhabitants of Seir,
they helped to destroy one another. So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the
multitude and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped (2 Chr. 20:22-24)

Miracles happened for Jehosaphat. Without going to any physical battle, the enemy was defeated because
God Himself caused them to destroy one another. Miracles are available for you too. When you change, you
are not alone because God is working the miracles in your life:

Changing your negative feelings to postive.

Deleting past memories and replace them with beauty, etc.

valuables on the dead bodies, the precious jewelry, which they stripped off for themselves, more than what
they could carry away; and they were three days gathering the spoils because there was so much (2
Tawarikh 20:25)
Not only did God defeat their enemies but He also poured Jehosaphat and the tribe of Judah with abundant
spoil of valuables. When you decided to change, not only will God give you His miracles to help you
change, He will also provide great blessings for you:
The blessings of joy and peace, because you are now out of the prison of sin or guilt.
The blessing of answered prayers, because you are now out of the prison of past bitterness.
The financial blessings, when you come out of the prison of fear to trust that God will preserve
your life.
Other blessings
Choose to change now, because there are abundant blessings awaiting on the corner.

Prosperity will always follow those who follow God

A child carried the bird he caught in a cage. When his neighbor asked him of what he was going to do with
the bird, he said, I am going to play with him. The neighbor asked the child again, But you cannot play
all the time, can you? What are you going to do after you play? The child answered, If I am bored, I will
give it to my cat. The neighbor then bought the bird and let it go.
Likewise the devil, one day he took a cage full of men. Then God asked him, What will you do to the
men? I am going to play with them, he replied. But you cannot play all the time. What are you going to
do afterwards? God asked him. I will kill them and throw them to hell, replied the devil. God
continued. How much do they cost? I will buy them. You will not like them, they will only rebel against
You and blaspheme Your Name, however, if You want to purchase them, You have to pay with all Your
tears and blood, said the devil. Deal! God said. He purchased all the men in the cage and let them go, free
like a bird. You are now free! Come out of the prison (bitterness, anxiety, fear, etc.) because God has paid
the price.

For Your Change Next Week

Forgiveness is Beautiful
Forgiveness is a primary issue in our relationship with God. All has sinned and has
fallen short of Gods glory (Rom. 3:23), and the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23).
However, man can be delivered from the penalty of death and come to the loving
Father because of His forgiveness (Col. 1:14). Forgiveness is also the corse of our
relationship with other people.
Read the Scriptures below and give your comments; what is your impression on those
Scriptures:
1. Matthew 5:23-26

2. Matthew 5:9-15

3. Matthew 18:21-35

a. How is our debt to God in comparison to other peoples debts to us?

b. How many times do we have to forgive others (Luke 17:3-5)?
c. Does God require us to forgive on the basis of our feelings or obedience?
d. How do you think God would feel towards those whom He has forgiven with
the sacrifice of His Son, if they refuse to forgive others?
e. Is forgiving a choice or a must?
f.

Think, is there anyone whom you have not forgiven? Is there still any
bitterness in your heart towards certain people? Pray for and forgive those
people now.

Transforming Toxic
INTO HEAVENLY DEW
(OHP : D1.35 Target lesson IV)
(Narration:) In today you will learn lesson number four of Journey of a Sure Change. Before I proceed, I
would like to remind you of the homework last week: Forgiveness is beautiful.
Now, if you have completed your homework, we are ready for the next lesson: TRANSFORMING TOXIC
INTO THE HEAVENLY DEW.

The things you are going to learn:

1. Bitterness is a deadly toxin
2. Seven steps of forgiveness
3. The right and wrong response

Corrie Ten Boom

Corrie Ten Boom once experience suffering in Germany concentration camp during World War II.
There she saw her friends and family suffered. The Nazi let the Jews starved to death causing them to
look like a living skull. Many died in the gas chamber or were shot by the soldiers out of Just for
fun. The concentration camp was truly a horrible place. After Corrie Ten Boom managed to
miraculously get out of that camp, she traveled around the world testifying Gods grace during those
dreadful years. On one occasion in Munich, a man came up to her after she spoke, and Corrie
recognized him as the guard in the camp. The man, not realizing that Corrie used to be one of his
prisoners, said, I am very grateful for your sermon, Madam. I am thankful that now I know that Jesus
has forgiven me. When this man stretched out his hand to her, Corries heart was filled with rage and
bitterness. Suddenly, she realized that they both have sinned and she prayed to God, Forgive me, and
help me to forgive him. With great struggle Corried moved her hand to shake the mans hand. She
prayed again, Jesus, I cannot forgive this man. Give me Your forgiveness. Corrie then forced herself
to shake that hands man. When I shook his hand, something amazing happened, from my shoulder to
my arm, then to my hand, and was transferred into his heart and mine such a great love overwhelmed
me.
How great the power of forgiveness is! Not only does it change the life of the person who receives the
forgiveness but it also frees the one being hurt. Gods plan for us is a life full of joy and freedom, without
burden and bitterness. What would it look like to live a life under the shadow of bitterness towards someone?
Each time you remember that person, your heart is restless. You may even try to avoid going to certain
places or getting together with certain groups of people so you would not meet with that person. Such life is
never comfortable. God wants you to live in freedom. Therefore He has commanded us to forgive.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

(OHP : D1.36 Bitterness is a deadly toxin)

(Narration:)
I. Bitterness is a deadly toxin
Bitterness is a feeling of anger, hatred, and an attitude that refuses to forgive that one keeps in
his/her heart towards other people or God, which causes him/her to reject that person or God.
The thing that most often traps someone in bitterness is hurt.

When Jesus said, forgive seventy times seven times, He knew how deadly the toxin of
bitterness will affect our lives. Therefore, the Word of God tells us to stay away from bitterness:

Looking diligently lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness
springing up cause trouble, and by these many become defiled (Heb. 12:15)

Several effects of bitterness:

1. Physical effects
The following diseases are the result of bitterness:
Hormonal imbalance in our bodies: Digestive problem, intoxication, high blood
pressure are only a few diseases caused by bitterness. Bitterness will cause overproduction of the pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and other glands of hormones. Excessive
amount of these hormones will stimulate various kinds of diseaseas in our bodies (from
None of These Diseases, S.I. McMillen, Spire Books, 1968, page 69-72)
The change of our facial expressions: By refusing to forgive, we can suffer from
vatigue and insomnia. Maybe we can hide the condition of our hearts yet it will be
apparent through our eyes and facial muscles. Our facial expressions represent our heart
feelings.
Bone fracture: Life is in the blood (Lev. 17:11), yet the blood is formed in the bone
marrow. So, the strength of our bones determines the fitness of our bodies. Bitterness
will bring a direct effect on our bones. (Psalm 32:3, Proverbs 15:30, 17:22, 14:30, 12:4,
Ezekiel 32:27)
A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones
(Proverbs 17:22)
A sound heart is life to the body but envy is a rottenness to the bones (Proverbs
14:30)

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

2. Spiritual effects
a. Inability to love God
How can a man love God if he does not love his brother?
If someone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who
does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has
not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God
must love his brother also (1 John 4:20-21)

b. Doubts towards his relationship with God

This doubt emerges when we pray Gods Word, forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
(Matthew 6:12). By not forgiving others, we are actually asking God not to forgive us.
c. Hindering others to grow spiritually
Others will see our attitude and refuse to listen to whatever we are going to say about spiritual
matters.
3. Emotional and mental effects
The apparent effect is depression. When you hold bitterness towards a person, you become enslaved
by that person. You will not be able to enjoy your work, savor your vacation quietly, or even do
things freely because that person is in control of your mind. As a result, you become emotionally
and mentally tired, which is the primary reason for depression. For this reason, Solomon said,:
Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, then a fatted calf with hatred (Proverbs 15:17)

(OHP : D1.37 Absalom)

(Narration:)

Absalom & His Bitterness

(2 Samuel 13 15)
Who does not know Absalom? He is a gorgeous, well built, and rich son of a king. His future was
definitely bright and assured, until a painful incident took place Absalom did not choose to forgive
but he swallowed the toxin of bitterness instead. One day, Absalom heard his sister, Tamar,
weeping. She was raped by her own stepbrother, Amnon. Absaloms heart was torn apart upon
hearing his sisters cry. However, instead of demanding justice from the king, he kept that matter as
the toxic bitterness in his life. Two years passed by, Absalom threw a party and invited all of the
kings sons and daughters, and it was in the middle of that party that Amnon was killed upon the
order of Absalom. After that, Absalom ran away to Geshur until the kings grief subsided, and he
was taken back to Jerusalem. However, Absalom did not say a single word of repentence or a
request of forgiveness to the king. On the contrary he rebelled by provoking the people and
gathering the force against the king.

He then appointed himself king at Hebron, attacked king David, his father, until David ran away
from Jerusalem. Absaloms Toxin had gotten so deep in his soul that he even attempted to
overthrow his own father. Things got worse for Absalom and the battle was unavoidable and became
a horrifying bloodshed in which 22,000 people died such a costly price for a bottle of toxic
bitterness. When Absalom was riding his horse in the forest, his beautiful and thick hair was stuck
on the tree and that was the moment when he was killed by the enemy a true and tragic story of
bitterness.

Forgiveness The Heavenly Dew

Seven Steps of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is difficult when you depend on your feelings. However, forgiveness is actually a
decision based on our will, not our feeling. Forgiveness is possible because God commands us to
forgive. Forgiveness is not only for the benefit of the person we forgive but also for our own
benefits so we can be free.
In the New Testament, the word forgive comes from the the Greek word amhiemi which means:
to send, to release, to leave, to give up. When someone wrongs us and we hold bitterness towards
that person, we indirectly imprison them in our hearts. If we forgive, we send them out or release
them from that prison. Jesus demonstrated forgiveness when He asked for the Fathers forgiveness
for those who persecuted and crucified Him:
Then Jesus said, Father, forgive then, for they do not know what they do (Luke 23:34)

Our forgiveness towards others does not depend on the size of the fault, on our relationship with that person,
or on other reasons . The only reason why we forgive should be because we have received Gods forgivenss
for ourselves.

(Note for teacher: discuss with the students the story of the wicked servant)
(23) Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wants to settle accounts with his servants.
(24) And when he had begun to settle account, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
(25) But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all
that he had, and that payment be made. (26) The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, Master,
have patience with me, and I will pay you all. (27) Then the master of that servant was moved with
compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. (28) But that servant went out and found one of his
fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat,
saying, Pay me what you owe! (29) So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying,
Have patience with me, and I will pay you all. (30) And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till
he should pay the debt. (31) So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and
came and told their master all that had been done. (32) Then his master, after he had called him, said to him,
You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. (33) Should you not also have had
compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you? (34) And his master was angry, and delivered
him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. (35) So My heavenly Father also will do to
you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses" (Matthew 18:23-35)

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

Since we have received Gods forgiveness, now we are required to forgive those who have wronged
us, in the same way God forgave us: FORGIVE AND FORGET.
I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins
(Isaiah 43:25)

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:12)

A sharp memory is good,

but the ability to forget others mistakes
is a test of a mans nobility
Some positive steps to experience the heavenly dew when you give out your forgiveness:

1. Believe in
BREAKTHROUGH

Realize that God works even through the wrongdoings that happen to
you
If we think that the person who hurts us acts by himself, it will be difficult
for us to avoid bitterness. However, if we realize that God uses him/her
for a purpose in our lives, we will have the spirit to forgive. They might
plan evil against us but God will turn it around for our good (Genesis
50:20).
Surely the wrath of man shall praise You; with the remainder of
wrath You shall grid Yourself (Psalm 76:10)

There is a saying in English: Man's futile wrath will bring you glory.
You will use it as an ornament!

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

2. Begin to FOCUS

Focus your thought on Gods forgiveness for you

and forgiving others will be easy for you.
Focus on God and His Word:
A pastor, who was in a hurry to minister to his congregation, drove his car too
fast . He was stopped by the policeman. When the police asked him, he explain
his situation and quoted the Scripture: Forgive us our sins The policeman
politely gave him the ticket with a smile and replied, And take us not into
temptation
Focusing on His Word is not like the story above but knowing what God has said
about forgiveness and obey Him.
Regardless of the fault, God wants you to forgive others. You forgive not
because of the person or you but because God has commanded you.

3. Get a REVELATION

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive
you (Matt. 6:14)

But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless
those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you (Luke 6:27-28)

Beloved, do not avenge yourself, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written:
Vengeance is Mine, I will repay (Rom. 12:19)

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother
has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.
First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift (Matt 5:2324)

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to
those who are the called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28)

But as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good (Gen.
50:20a)

Find out, what character does He want to build through each incident.
When we give a wrong response to the person who hurts us, we actually expose
our lack in certain characters that needs to be built. Those characters are love,
patience, faith, gentleness, self-control, etc. Likewise, if we respond
appropriately to the person who hurts us, it exposes our good characters.
Where there is a thick love,
Error becomes thin.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

4. Get into
WORSHIP

Give thanks to God for the good that He has planned

through that incident.
God commanded us to be thankful in all things, particularly in all
situations (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We do not need to wait for a grateful
feeling to give thanks to Him. Giving thanks is a matter of choice, while
being thankful is a feeling.
When we dedicate our lives to God, He builds a wall of protection
around us so that nothing can touch us, unless He permits it. He allows
those things for a purpose to bring reward and joy. For this reason, we
can give thanks to God for every attack that we suffer from others.
Forgiveness is not about feeling;
it is about making the right choice.

5. Speak
PROPHETICALLY

Realize that suffering for doing the right thing

is part of Christian life.
Many people misunderstood that when one becomes a Christian, he or
she does not need to suffer. The Scriptures clearly says:
For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to
believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake (Philippians 1:29)
Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer
persecution (2 Timothy 3:12)

Although we may still suffer for doing what is right, we need to continue
to give thanks and do prophetic actions that will change our situations.
The right speech and action
precede the right feelings.
Forgiving is not about feelings; it is a prophetic action:
1. I will never use this to attack him/her in the future.
2. I will not converse this issue with other people.
3. I will not dwell in this issue forever.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

6. MIRACLES belong
to you

There is no easier way to forgive someone than

to pray for him.
When you make a commitment to forgive, God will do a miracle by healing your
wound and memory of that person. Pray for that person and ask God to heal the
wound and erase the painful memory of that inident.
But for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good (Gen.
50:20a)
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to
those who are the called according to His purpose (Rom. 8:28)

When you pray for the person who hurts you:

Remember your obligation to heal
the one who hurts you.
People who hurt us are usually people who are hurt themselves. When God
allows that person to hurt us, He puts an obligation on us to demonstrate Gods
love and presence to that person. Who can stand Gods love and presence and
remain unchanged?

7. PROSPERITY the
road to freedom.

There are no greater and more beautiful blessings

than forgiveness.
Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are
covered (Romans 4:7)
If you forgive others, your sins are also forgiven such a great blessing beside
the other blessings that you will receive as the result of your God-answered
prayers. Your life becomes toxic immune when you choose to forgive.
Naomi, a mother who kept so much bitterness that she changed her name into
Mara or bitter, received a great blessing. Her husband and two sons died in a
foreign country. She returned to Israel with Ruth, her daughter-in-law. It was
Ruth who worked hard for their survival. Ruths kindness and faithfulness to her
mother-in-law was not in vain. Naomi releaed her bitterness and began to pay
attention to Ruths life, My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it
may be well with you? (Rut 3:1). To make the story short, Naomi planned
Ruths encounter with Boaz, a kinsman, to be a redeemer to Ruth and Naomi.
Eventually, Ruth married Boaz and bore a son who was the grandfather of king
David. This grandson of Naomi was Obed, whose name was listed in the book of
the genealogy of our Savior. Naomis life was assured; she had become so
blessed that people said: Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day
without a near kinsman.
And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; your
daughter in law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne
him (Ruth 4:15). Gods blessings were poured out when Naomi released her
bitterness.

Father, Forgive Them

Crucifiction is the most horrifying punishment throughout history. Even for the most vicious criminal,
this punishment is inhumane, especially for a blameless man like Jesus. He received spewing on the
face, a great insult for such a King. His suffering began when he was beaten with thorny whip on the
that tore His flesh apart. A crown of thorns was pushed with a full force on His head piercing through
His skull causing His head to bleed and damaging the nerve system. Big nails pierced into His wrists
and feet.
His body was hanging, and He had to pull His body up and leaned on His hands so that He could
breathe. Each time the nails piercing the hand further damaged the wounds with unbearable pains. Not
to mention the mockery from the Roman soldiers who took His robe. The robber beside Him also
mocked Him. He would never deserve all these sufferings, yet one of the words He said before He died
was, Father, forgive them, for they do no know what they have done (Luke 23:34). With His terrible
pain, Jesus forgave those who persecuted Him and through His suffering, forgiveness is now available
for all of us.

Just as God has given us His forgiveness, so we should forgive those who have wronged us. Today you
have learned about forgiveness. Freedom will be in your life when you forgive! Will you change and make
a commitment to forgive others who have wronged you? Right now, make a commitment and a decision to
immediately forgive those who will wrong you even in the future.

Giannas mother was 17 years ols when she was pregnant with
Gianna. In the seventh month of her pregnancy, Tina went to an
abortion clinic to abort Gianna. The doctors attempt failed and
Gianna, a cute little baby, was born. However, due to that
abortion attempt, Gianna had a brain damage. She was finally
adopted by Diana. As she grew up, Gianna found out that she
was once aborted by her biological mother, but the abortion did
not succeed. That fact did not make her lose heart because her
mother always said, Instead of focusing on the fact that you
almost died, praise God for the fact that you live. Gianna had
forgiven her biological mother and accepted the fact that Jesus
loved her.
She said that she could do all things with Jesus, although they were not easy. Due to her brain damage,
Gianna had a difficulty of learning in some aspects. Her legs became paralyzed, like one who suffered polio.
She had to use a metal crutch, which made her a mockery to her friends when she was little. That rejection
continued on. No one wanted to sit and eat lunch with her at school during the break. Gianna one cried
desperately, but Diana, her foster mother said, What I know is that He saved your life for a reasonHe
wants to do something extraordinary through you, and He will show you when He is ready.

Thats right; Gianna grew to be a speaker in her very young age, 14 years old. She spoke in front of
government officers and politicians who would decide on the abortion law. She met with Christian
worldwide leaders, spoke in churches and in front of thousands of people. Televisions, newspapers and
magazines wrote her story. She testified that many women who once aborted their babies are now restored
and repented. Gianna became a witness of Gods mercy and beautiful life that He has granted to every
human being.
Gianna is a rejected child. Her mother evidently tried to abort Gianna when she was still in her mothers
womb. However, this did not make Gianna feel rejected. Instead, Gianna showed the right response towards
this incident and she became a person God wonderfully used.
Naturally, God created you in such a wonderful image even your birth was designed such amazingly by
God:
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my
soul knows very well (Psalm 139:14)
Even it was Gods own idea to create you in His image:
Then God said, Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness (Genesis 1:26).

However, the toxic of sin has shattered mans image Gods creation into pieces. Sense of
rejection is one of the poisons that destroyed the image of man.
(OHP : D1.47 Rejection)

(Narration:)

I.

Sense of rejection; what is that?

Being rejected is not a new experiencee. Everyone must
have gone through a certain extent of rejection.
Be it your colleague at work rejected your idea, a salesman rejected by his customer, unaccepted as
friend by a certain group, being excluded by a community, family members, or even planned to be
aborted while one was still in the womb . Rejection does not actually depend on the active action of
rejection from someone but rather, the response of the person towards the rejection aimed at him/her.
The definition of the sense of rejection is:
A sense of being unwanted or unloved, regardless that you want to be loved and accepted. It is also a
longing to be a part of a certain group, yet you feel exclusion. Sense of rejection is a feeling that you
are not part of a group, as if you were outside and looking inside.

(OHP : D1.48 The Core Issue)

(Narration:)

II. The Core Issue of Rejection / Sense

of Rejection
1. If searched thoroughly, the root of rejection or sense of
rejection is selfishness or self-centeredness
Those who want to be considered important, I have the rights, Im precious, I want to do this
and that etc, when others abandon the I then they will feel rejection. Actually, selfishness or
self-centeredness is not just the root of rejection but also the root of many other problems. On the
contrary, if we live like Jesus who was selfless / emptied himself, , and was living a life dedicated to
God and not to self, then we will be free from rejection.
The reason why man is sensitive towards rejection goes back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of
Eden. In the beginning, they enjoyed Gods love and acceptance. Then Adam rejected and rebelled
against God. As a result, sin entered into the world and separated Adam from God. Since then, the
deepest desire of man is to experience the love and acceptance of God once again.

2. Looking at the wrong mirror

When we grew up, we had physical and mental characteristics which were different from other
people around us. Our friends at school might often make fun of us and this caused different levels
of rejection in us. Rejection from others can cause someone to reject him/herself.
How was someones self-image formed?
For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring
themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise (2 Corinthians 10:12)

The Characteristics of Rejected People

Rejection often gets into a person in a way that is profound and concealed that no one realizes that it
becomes a major problem. Some results of rejection:

(Note for teacher: You can discuss the first five things and let the students read the rests at
home).
CHARACTERISTICS OF
THE SENSE OF REJECTION

NOTE

1. Unable to feel Gods love and Due to rejection by his environment, one finds it difficult to feel
Gods love and acceptance towards him.
acceptance

2. Unable to believe in God.

Self-rejection makes it difficult for a person to believe in God. If

he refused what God has done in him, how can he receive the
Creator:
Woe to him who strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strife
with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him who
forms it, What are you making? or shall your handiwork say,
He has no hands? (Isaiah. 45:9)

3. Hindering friendship

Rejected people usually are very sensitive people. Their fear of

rejection and hurt hinder them from building and keeping close
relationships/friendships with other people.

4. Difficult to love other people.

God commanded us to love others as we love ourselves. If we

do not love ourselves rightly, how can we love others?
you shall love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 19:19)

5. Excessive interest on clothing.

Excessive interest on clothing can be a compensation to

camouflage certain physical condition that one dislikes. Jesus
said:
Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So
why do you worry about clothing? (Matthew 6:27,28)

6. Excessive shame.

Fear of what others may thing about us will be reflected to

others, so that it appears as if others reject us. We can learn
about this from King Sauls life (1 Sam. 9 & 10)

7. Criticizing self.

Complaints against the unchangeable physical condition,

someones ability, family, and social condition are signs of
someone who is rejecting him/herself (Isa. 45:9).

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

(OHP : D1.52 The characteristics

of rejected people
8. Comparing self with other people

The desire to change the unchangeable things (body shape,

parents, etc.) is the sign of self-rejection. On the contrary,
however, we must be different from those whose character and
attitude are not according to the image of Christ (Romans 9:20).

9. Bitterness

Many people said, I hate myself. The reason could be because

of what they had done or said. They might also say the same
thing about their present condition, which ends up in bitterness
towards Him who has made them.
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it,
just as the Lord does the Church (Eph. 5:29)

10. Perfectionist

It is good that we always want to improve what we do, but if the

time needed for the perfecting process is more than the result
that we will get, this also is a sign of self-rejection.

11. Looking at self higher than other Boasting about our achievement, using lofty words to show our
proficiency, or refusing to mingle with people from certain
people
class/group are also indications of pride and low self-esteem.
Those who highly look up to themselves are indeed people who
feel lowly on the inside yet they try to narrow down the
comparison; they compare themselves with others in certain
areas where obviously not of their match.
For who makes you differ from one another? And what do you have
that you do not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you
glory as if you had not received it? (1 Cor. 4:7)

12. Extreme efforts to cover their Excessive and extreme efforts to cover their unchangeable
weaknesses can ba indication of self-rejection. If there are
weaknesses
weaknesses that we cannot change and though we prayed, but it
produces no result, we can hold onto this Scripture:
My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfectly in
weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities,
that the power of Christ may rest upon me (2 Cor. 12:9)

Journey of a Sure Change

13. Unnecessary Luxury.

Another evidence of rejection is spending money on expensive

things, hoping that the things they have spent their money on
will make other people admire and accept them.
Take heed and beware of covetousness, for ones life does not consist
in the abundance of the things he possesses. (Luke 12:15)

14. Wrong priority

Neglecting the responsibility God has given us by spending
much time to search for things that will make people appreciate
us may be a sign of self-rejection. On the contrary:
But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have
rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another (Gal. 6:4)

Seven Steps to Developing Your Self-Image.

Jesus suffered rejection yet He never felt rejected nor rejected Himself in his heart. The people in His
city knew Him as the carpenters son. Although Jesus had done many miracles and taught with power in
other places but yet He was rejected by the people of His hometown (Matthew 13:55). Jesus said of
Himself as the chief cornerstone which the builders rejected (Matius 21:42). The most terrible rejection
He faced might be when the world rejected Him, although He came to actually save the world. His
disciples betrayed and denied Him, people spitted on Him, persecuted and crucified Him.
However, Jesus did not take those rejections as a personal offense because His focus was to fulfill the
will of God. He made Himself of no reputation and did not consider Himself important, that was why
He never felt rejected although many people clearly rejected Him. Another reason was because He was
looking at the right mirror, the Heavenly Father.

1. Begin to FOCUS

Focus to build the character in you, not your outside appearance. If we

focus on the appearance only, we will be disappointed because
appearance will change.
David understood that the most important was his character, therefore he
made such commitment to build his character in such a way, until
eventually, from all of his brothers, he was the one Samuel anointed to
be king, and God said to Samuel:
for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the
heart (1 Sam. 16:7)

There is not any universal standard on appearance

There is no standard measurement on what people call beautiful or
handsome. For example, for people in the Pacific island, women with
extra size are considered beautiful. White people sunbathe because
they think tanned skin is beautiful. Japanese girls think crowded
tooth is beautiful. So, there is no set standard. What is most important is
that God looks at the heart, not at the appearance. Your character is more
important than your appearance, because there is a universal standard on
character, that is Christ-like character. Focus yourself to build excellent
characters.
He (Jesus) has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is
no beauty that we should desire Him (Isaiah 53:2)

2. Get a REVELATION

David knew what he had inside him, the Holy Spirit:

and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me (Psalm 51:11)

Inner beauty leads you to success.

David was a clear example. He had character and inner beauty:
for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the
heart (1 Sam. 16:7)

He was chosen and anointed by God:

and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward (1
Sam. 16:13)

Therefore he always prospered:

And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him (1
Sam. 18:14).

From the right heart and attitude, Gods anointing fell upon David and
made him a prosperous man.

3. Get into

You will become like the one you worship.

WORSHIP
That was why David worshipped his God with all his heart and passion.
As you begin to worship God, His glory is upon you and you are
transformed to be more like Him
:
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the
Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just
as by the Spirit of the Lord. (2 Cor. 3:18)
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous! For praise from the upright is
beautiful (Ps. 33:1)

4. Speak

PROPHETICALLY

Davids prophetic words describe his faith:

I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps. 139:14)

Katakan perkataan yang profetik :

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,
which God prepared beforehand (Eph. 2:10)

MIRACLES belong to
you

David was also rejected when all of his brothers went out to fight the
Philistines and he was left alone in the field to watch the sheep. When he
brought the food for his brother in the battlefield, they said to him, Why
did you come?.. (1 Samuel 17:28) and made fun of him. However,
miracle happened and it was David who defeated Goliath.
Joshua was also rejected by the whole Israel when he returned from
spying the land of Canaan. He gave a report that the land was good and
that they would defeat the inhabitants of the land. This rejection did not
waver Joshuas faith. As a result, many years later, Joshua obtained the
land and enjoyed the fruits. Miracles happened out of rejection
(Numbers 14)

6.

Your image is awesome.

PROSPERITY

the road to success.

The prosperity that you will receive from accepting yourself the way
God has accepted you is that you will live as a joyful person. Just as
Joshua enjoyed the prosperity of Canaan, and David became one of the
greatest kings in Israel, likewise prosperity will belong to you when you
free yourself from rejection.
God created man, put them in the Garden of Eden, and blessed them.
God created you in His likeness and blessed you:
Then God said, Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let
them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and
over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on
the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He
created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and
God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have
dominion over all the fish of the sea, over the birds of the earth, and over every
living thing that moves

The practice that day did not go well for the team coached by Vince Lombardi. That noon the heat
was very damp. Lombardi called for his halfback player and said, Heywhat is going on with you?
You did not show up your defense, you did not try to take the ball, you did nothing!Your practice
today is over, go to the bathroom and clean yourself.

That particular player bowed his head and walked slowly towards the changing room. Forty five
minutes later Lombardi walked in and saw that same player still in his uniform, sitting in front of his
locker, bowed his head and cried. Vince Lombardi, a warrior with a gentle heart, came and put his
arm around his shoulder. Son, I will tell you the truth about you.

You played badly. You cannot endure, you did not try to take the ball, you did nothing. Actually, I
have to let you go, yet I know that deep inside you there is an extraordinary football player. I will
train you until that player inside you come out and show himself. With to these words, Jerry Kramer,
the player, stood and felt better. He eventually became one of the greatest football players
throughout history. He was awarded the best pemain gelandang in the first 50 years of American
football history.

Vince Lombardi saw something very valuable in a person which the person himself failed
to realize. Likewise, God sees something very precious in you, therefore He sent His only
begotten Son to die on the Cross so that you can be saved. You are precious to God and He
accepts you. You are the apple of His eyes!

b. How did David overcome his fear?

2.

What fear/anxiety that you have right now that hinders you from believing God
completely?

3.

From time to time, David went through threats and temptations, yet each time he
always came to God. Psalm 27 described Davids trust unto the Lord. Read this
Psalm loudly, meditate and write down what you get from it:

The Lion Trainer

A very well known circus was often aired on television. One of their very special shows was the lions
acrobatic in the cage. One night, the lion trainer went into the cage to start the show and the door behind him
was locked. The lights were directed to the cage and the TV camera covered from nearby. While the
audience watched in suspense how the lions did the acrobat, suddenly all the lights were off! For the next
twenty minutes the trainer was locked in the cage with the lions. In the dark, the lions could see him but he
could not see them. A whip and a small chair did not seem to give a full protection in that situation, yet the
trainer survived. When the lights were back on, he calmly finished the show. In an interview after that show,
this trainer was asked about his feelings, knowing that the lions could see him but he could not see them. He
admitted that at first there was a great fear, yet he said that the lions did not know that he could not see them.
So I continue to lash my whip and instruct them until the lights turn back on. And they never know that I
cannot see them the way they can see me.
This experience gives us a picture of the life of man. Such as this lion instructor, at a certain point in our
lives we may be confronted with fear, as if facing the lions in the dark. Some people go through excessive
fear continuously and cannot handle it. They may not be able to see the problem or the cause, yet they are
paralyzed by fear. How do you face the lions in your life and overcome your fear? Follow this lesson!

(OHP : D1.58 Fear, What Is It?)

(Narration:)

I. Fear, What Is It?

In the beginning, God created Adam and Even. They enjoyed a beautiful fellowship with Him in the
Garden of Eden. Men believed in God fully and had faith in God in every aspect of life. One day,
because of disobedience, sin entered into mans life and since then the spirit of fear came to man
(Genesis 3:7-10).
Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you? So he said, I heard Your voice
in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. (Gen. 3:9-10)

The word fear in Hebrew is yirah and in the Greek word is phobos, which means
afraid, terror (Isaiah 7:25, Jonah 1:10, Matthew 28;4, Luke 21:26).

Fear is: the evil spirit that binds the life of man so that he cannot experience the perfect
love of God and cannot trust God wholeheartedly:
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who
fears has not been made perfect in love (1 John 4:18)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind(2
Timothy 1:7)
Fear is the tool that the devil uses to prevent man from experiencing Gods love and to hinder man
from believing in God. The Bible clearly says in 2 Timothy 1:7 and 1 John 4:8 that fear is a spirit
that has to be destroyed.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that
feareth is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)

The word casteth out in its origin is ballo which means to throw away by force

(OHP : D1.59 The Source of Fear)

(Narration:)

II.

The Source of Fear

1. Sin
Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you? So he said, I heard Your
voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. (Gen. 3:9-10)
2. Past Traumas
Someone who had an accident that took away the lives of his three friends might be afraid to drive
after the accident. Or, a girl who was abused by her own father might be afraid to be involved in an
intimate relationship with a man or feel terrified of her boss in her office. Sometimes, people are
terrified by others or by situations that are out of their control. This is very sad, but do not let fear
overtake you again. God has given you strength through His Holy Spirit to come out of your fears.
3. The crisis of believing God
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind(2
Tim.1:7)
Other reason for fear and anxiety is unbelief in God. Why do people not believe in God? Because
they do not know God. They may have heard and read about God, or even spoken about Him, yet
they do not know Him personally
.

An Acrobat Player

An acrobat bravely crossed Niagara Falls on a piece of rope. The crowds gathered anxiously on the
edge of the fall. Finally, the acrobat player successfully finished his attempt and the crowd clapped
their hands in astonishment. Then he asked the crowd, do you all believe that I can go back to the
other side of the rope successfully? Everyone agreed. The acrobat then asked again, If you do, who
wants to sit on my shoulder and cross the rope with me? Every one was quiet and no one raised
their hands. Suddenly, a boy raised his hand and climbed on to the acrobats shoulder. Together they
crossed Niagara Falls on the rope. The crowd clapped their hands again as both of them made it to
the other side. When a reporter asked the little boy, Son, were you not afraid? The boy replied
calmly, He is my father, I know him and I believe that he can take me to the other side.
Actually, crossing the fall on the shoulder of a man who walked on the rope was a terrifying thing.
However, this boy had such courage because he knew and believed in the man who carried him to
the other side, and he was his own father. Likewise, God wants you to know Him so intimately that
you are free from all fear and anxiety and live by faith.

(OHP : D1.60 Watch out)

(Narration:)

III.

Watch out The Danger of Fear!

There are two gates that the devil uses to bring in fear into the life of man. They are the eye and the ear.
In these days there are many incidents that can ensnare people in fear, such as monetary crisis, layoff,
crimes, injustice, polution, moral digression, war, etc.
1. Fear that causes excessive anxieties
One of the men in the Bible who was terrified was Job. In Job 1:10 the devil said God made a hedge
around Jobs life. Job and his sons lived in prosperity, yet Job was in fear. He began to see a shadow
in his imagination, what if poverty, sickness, and calamity fell upon his family:
For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me (Job
3:25)
Regardless the fact that Job prayed every day, he did not pray out of faith but fear. What job was
afraid of eventually happened to him because fear destroyed the hedge of protection that God had
made around Jacob and all his possessions.
2. Fear can bring death
In Luke 21:26 Jesus said:
Mans hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the
earth, for the power of heaven will be shaken (Luke 21:26)
Fear can bring death. The obvious example is the increasing number of suicide as the result of the
monetary crisis in Indonesia in 1998.
3. Fear can bring eternal death
God hates fear so much that those who allow themselves to be overtaken by fear will be throwned
into the lake which burns with fire and brimstone (second death):
But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and
all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstones, which is the second
death (Revelation 21:8)
4. Fear can affect our health
Medical research proves that fear destroys our immune system towards the disease. Not only that,
fear also attacks the nerve system, particularly those related to heart and digestive organs. A person
who is in fear does not usually breathe normal but in short intervals. Moreover, lacking of good
sleep opens access for various diseases to attack.
5.

Fear the primary hindrance of success

Moses sent out the spies to spy Canaan, the land of milk and honey that God had promised to Israel.
However, when the spies returned, they were terrified by the inhabitants of the land and the fortified
cities. Their fear and anxiety prevented them from entering Canaan, regardless the fact that God had
given the land to them and had promised to help them enter the land. If we let fear overtake us, it
will stop us from receiving Gods promises, seeing His power, and achieving the victory and
success.

(OHP : D1.61 7 steps to overcome fear)

(Narration:)

IV.

Seven Steps to Overcome Fear

There is a normal fear, which helps people to be cautious. For example, fear of the plague of dengue fever that
encourages people to clear water puddle and spray their houses. The fear of failing the test will encourage the
students to seriously study to attain good grades. The fear of poisonous snake will make people avoid that
dangerous animal. These kinds of fear are normal. However, there is also abnormal fear or fear that does not make
any sense. For example, a person with excessive fear of failure continuously makes him afraid to make decisions.
Others are afraid of flying, afraid of the dark or being in the crowd (phobia), etc. This overwhelming and
paralyzing fear has to be cast out. God wants us to live in faith and peace, and to overcome all fear. Below are
seven steps that you can apply to cast our fear:

1. Believe in

BREAKTHROUGH

Faith is the key to breakthrough that can cast out fear.

Each time before you sit on a chair, are you going to check how strong
the structure of the chair or are you going to just sit? Of course you will
just sit, because you believe that the chair is capable of holding your
weight. Likewise, when we go to the doctor, we simply believe in the
prescription he gave and take the medicine although we cannot read or
understand the doctors writing. You simply believe in the chairs
goodness to support your body, and the doctors goodness and
honesty. Likewise, Faith is: believe in someone elses goodness and
honesty.
The word of God says:
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not
seen (Hebrews 11:1)

What do you hope for? And believe in something you have not seen? It
is Gods goodness and honesty, that He will give you only the best in
life.
Faith is seeing the invisible,
believing in the extraordinary, and
receiving the impossible.
2. Begin to FOCUS

It was the first day of school, and the kindergarten teacher asked each
child of what they wanted to be. A boy said proudly, When I am
grown up, I want to be a lion trainer. I will have many wild tigers and
lions, then I will go inside the cage He paused for a while, then
continued, but of course, I will go in there with my mother
This little boy said, he would have the courage to go into the lions cage
if his mother would be with him. Likewise, if we realize that the Spirit of
God is always with us, fear and anxiety will disappear from our lives.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

1. Focus on His Name: Jehovah Jireh.

God is a good Father. Just like our earthly father desires to fulfill his
childrens needs and protect them, how much more our Heavenly
Father is.
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You, Lord,
have not forsaken those who seek You (Psalm 9:10)
2.

Focus on His Word.

Remember Gods promises to love, preserve, and protect you
:
Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7)
Even to your old age, I am He, and even to grey hairs I will carry you! I
have made, and now will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you
(Isaiah 46:4)

There are 366 Fear not in the Bible,

one Scripture for each day.
3.

Focus on His works.

Remember all Gods works in the past (goodness, protection,
delivering you from trouble, etc.). Israel continuously remembered
their God-given victories in the past:
I will also meditate on all Your work, and told of Your deeds (Psalm
77:12)

3. Get a REVELATION

Faith is a choice,
We choose to believe in God or
to believe in what we see.
Get a revelation of your true condition, seeing through Gods eyes, like
Joshua and Caleb did. Twelve people saw the same thing: a good land
with giants and fortresses, however, only two had an insight /
revelation to see the situation from Gods perspective:
Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they
are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us.
Do not fear them (Numbers 14:9)

Do not be afraid of tomorrow

because God is already there.

4. Get into

WORSHIP

If you have the fear of God, you will not fear of anything else
(Oswald Chambers).
Faith is a form of worship; only by faith we can come to God and find
favor in His sight.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must
believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him
(Hebrews 11:6)

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

Get into worship and know who your God truly is. When you encounter
the Creator, it will be difficult for you to be overtaken by fear & anxiety.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (Psalm
23:4)

5. Speak

Faith and fear cannot live in one house.

If one comes in, the other one will go out.

PROPHETICALLY

Change your words with the Word of God:

Im worried about into I believe God will
Im afraid of into I have faith that God
I lack into with God I can
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the
strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
But the very hairs of your head are numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are
of more value than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:30-31)
But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed
you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your
name; you are Mine (Isaiah 43:1)
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will
strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right
hand (Isaiah 41:10)

6.

MIRACLES belong to
you.

Anxiety was the reason why Job lost everything, but believing in God
brought him double blessings for his life.
Indeed we call them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance
of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord that the Lord is very
compassionate and merciful (James 5:11)

7.

PROSPERITY the
road to freedom.

From the 12 spies, only two eventually entered in and enjoyed the
prosperity of Canaan, Joshua and Caleb, men full of faith. The other ten

Run, Patti, Run!!!

At her very young age, Patti Wilson was diagnosed of epilepsy by the doctor. Her father, Jim Wilson, was a
track and field athlete. One day, Patti smiled and said to her faither, Father, I really want to run with you
every morning, but Im afraid if my epilepsy comes out unexpectedly. Her father said, If you really want
to run, I know how to handle it, so lets start running with me. Then Patti began to run every morning and
her epilepsy never broke out.
After a few weeks, Patti said, Dad, I want to set the world record for female long distance running.
Her father looked at the GUINESS BOOK OF RECORDS and record for a female running the longest
distance is 80 mil. In her early high school, Patti said, When Im in tenth grade, I will run from Orange
County to San Francisco (400 miles). Later when Im in eleventh grade, I will run to Portland,
Oregon. (1500 miles). twelve grade, I will run to St. Louis. (2000 miles). After that I will run to the
White House (over 3000 miles).
That year, she ran to San Francisco with her mother and a nurse for precaution. The following year, she
ran with her schoolfriends, all with the T-shirts Run, Patti, Run (this motto finally became the title
of the book she wrote). In the middle of the journey she broke her bone. She almost failed but she
insisted that the doctor would give her the medication that would keep her running regardless the pain.
The last mile to Portland, Oregon, Patti ran with Oregons governor and was cheered and welcome on
the finish line with a banner: Super Runner, Patti Wilson, Finished the Marathon for Epilepsy at the age
of 17. Her attempt to run from her hometown to the White House (from West America to East
America) took 4 months. She arrived and shook hands with the president of the US. Another result was
the fund raising of millions of dollars for research and medication of epilepsy.

All of Patti Wilsons achievement will not happen had she gave in to her fear: the epilepsy attack
while she was running. Though she did suffer from epilepsy, but yet it did not stop her. What she
was afraid of did not come true. Remember that FEAR is the abbreviation of False Evidence
Appearing Real. Most of our anxieties or fears might never happen. Allowing fear will take away
the peace and joy that God has given us. Pull up the false evidence billboards in your life, reach
your victory with Christ!

It does not make any sense to be worried of the things that you can control,
because those things are under your control.
Likewise it does not make any sense to be worried of the things that are out of your
control, because you cannot control them.

What you are going to learn:
1. Human Rights are Gods idea
2. Sanctify and Surrendering Your Personal Rights
3. Seven Steps to Surrendering and Sanctifying Your Rights

(OHP : D1.66 - Have You Ever Insulted A King?)

(Narration:) Insulting and throwing stone to a kings or a presidents face on purpose? How rude! What
kind of a person would have the guts to do such shameful thing? Especially if the president is surrounded by
his guards. However, that was what Shimei did. David with his faithful supporters and his mighty warriors
left Jerusalem to take refuge in Jordan through Bahurim because Jerusalem was seized by Absalom.
Shimei, one of Sauls descendants took an advantage to compensate his anger. He might be upset thinking
that it was Davids fault that Saul was no longer king, because now he lost the privilege of being a close
relative to the royal family. Or he was furious because his familys reputation was ruined. Whatever the
reason was, it drove Shimei to do such improper thing. Although Davids army and his mighty men walked
on his left and right, Shimei was not hesitant to throw stones at David and said: "Come out! Come out! You
bloodthirsty man, you rogue! The Lord has brought upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose
place you have reigned; and the Lord has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son. So now
you are caught in your own evil, because you are a bloodthirsty man! " (2 Samuel 16:7-8). How dare he use
the name of God to accuse David for the things he did not do. Immediately, Abishai, one of Davids faithful
men asked for permission to take off Shimeis head. How would the kings reputation be if this kind of
thing was permitted? What would his supporter and his mighty men say? They might leave the king and
David would lose his throne forever. How surprised was Abishai when David forbade him from killing
Shimei! David did not even insult that man a single word! How could that be, David the king, a mighty
warrior remained silent even when he was insulted? Isnt it that Shimei has sinned by cursing Gods
anointed? Behind his great surprise came a deep sense of respect in Abishai for his master. David was not a
furious king or a king who was after respect but a man who was secure in his position, strong and sure in
himself (Adapted from 2 Samuel 16:5-14).
Despite Davids honorable position, he did not consider that position as his but Gods. David was not
mad, became bitter or took vengeance by insulting back at all, because he did not consider his reputation as
something that belonged to him. He had surrendered his rights over good name, honor, and reputation to
God. That was why he had a sense of security/stability even though his dignity was being attacked.
Eventually, God restored Davids throne because he had passed the test of reputation, and God and all the
people trusted David that he would never misused the throne for the sake of his reputation.

1. Human Rights
A. Human Rights are Gods idea
From the beginning, God created men with choices and freedom. He never created a robot but gave
free will and choices for men. He breathed human rights into their lives. Adam and Eve were given
full authority over the plants and animals in the Garden of Eden.
And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for
food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the
tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely
die (Gen. 2:9, 16-17)

God gave men the rights and freedom to choose, manage, tproduce, change and to build this world
for their happiness. Human rights were in the heart of God:
Therefore let no one glory in men. For all things are yours" (1 Cor. 3:21)

(OHP : D1.67)

B. Sanctifying/Surrendering Our Rights to Gloryfy God or Using

Them for Personal Benefit?
(Naration:)
The spirit of rebellion of the devil destroyed this idea of God about human rights. Men misused
their freedom of choice to rebel against God. Adam and Eve, against Gods command, ate the fruit
from the tree of knowledge of the good and evil. Along with the fall, manipulation of the human
rights began because they were no longer used with pure motivation but had been overtaken by the
devil. What you thought as your rights and used them resulted in the destruction of the lives of man.
There are some examples of our rights: (discuss!)
1. The rights to live and be accepted as an individual.
2. The rights to speak our opinion without being interrupted.
3. The rights to plan how to use our spare time.
4. The rights for personal life.
5. The rights to have and use money.
6. The rights to choose our friends.
7. The rights to control our personal belongings, etc.
The use of the rights above, if not purified by the Holy Spirit, can destroy man because of sins
nature that has crept into the lives of men. For example, divorce by divorce happened because either
spouse who felt as if his/her personal privacy had been trespassed demanded a divorce. The prochoice women in America claimed that they have the rights over their bodies, so they have the rights
to abort their fetus.
For this reason, Jesus taught us how to use your rights properly, which is by surrendering those
rights to God to be sanctified, so that everything we do is in line with His will and will bring glory to
Him:

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in
you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with
God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And
being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the
death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every
name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those
under the earth (Phil. 2:4-10)

Jesus made Himself of no reputation and set an example of giving up and sanctifying His rights.
He did not even look at Himself anymore but at others. He surrendered His rights to the Father.
Likewise, we should use our rights to look at others needs. We surrender our rights for God to
sanctify, so that God can promote and build our character.
David had the rights to kill Saul, yet he surrendered that rights to God, to glorify God. Hannah had
the rights over her son, Samuel, but she gave up Samuel for God. Since he was little he lived in the
temple to serve God.

(OHP : D1.68)

C. Characteristics of those who have not surrendered their rights

(Narration:)
Some characteristics of those who have not surrendered their rights to be sanctified:

CHARACTERISCTICS OF THOSE
WHO HAVE NOT SANCTIFIED
AND SURRENDERED THEIR
RIGHTS
1. Anger.
One of the reasons for anger is when someone
feels that his/her rights has been trespassed. For
example, if a friend who borrowed a book lost it,
the owner of the book could be upset and angry,
because s/he thinks that the book is his personal
belonging which is supposed to be returned to
his/her hand. Not all anger is wrong and sinful
There is godly anger, for example when Jesus
cleansed the temple of God from the traders.
However, a person who is continuously angry or
explodes in his/her temper and cannot control
him/herself, it is possible that s/he has not
surrendered his/her rights.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

The earth is the Lords and all its fullness, the world
and those who dwell therein (Psalm 24:1)

Teachers Manual

2. Fear.
Excessive fear or anxiety can also be a sign of a
person who has not surrendered his/her rights. For
example, a girl who is afraid of being unmarried
at certain age may have not surrendered her rights
to be married to the Lord.

Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or

What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For after
all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father
knows that you need all these things. But seek first the
kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things
shall be added to you (Matt. 6:31-33)

While the fact is, everything we have comes from

3. Unthankfulness.
If someone thinks that something supposedly God, which might be given to us through other
belongs to him, he will not have to thank anyone peoples kindness around us.
for it.
A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to
him from heaven (John 3:27)

4. Unforgiveness / Bitterness.
A person can become bitter and unforgiving
because he may refuse to let go of his rights of Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord. And
being treated well, or he still wants to hold on to again, The Lord will judge His people(Heb. 10:30)
his rights of making an even vengeance if
possible.

5. Pride.
A person who thinks that he has the rights to be But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest
respected, the rights of having a good reputation, among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs
the rights of being treated in a special way that as he who serves (Luke 22:26)
comes out of an attitude that says: I am better
than others.

(OHP : D1.69)

II.

Sanctifying and Surrendering Your Personal |Rights

(Narration:)
In the process of surrendering your rights, be careful that you do not surrender your obligation. Do not get
confused between rights and obligation. For example, a student says, Lord, I give up my rights of having
good grades to the Lord, and therefore I will not have to study seriously anymore. A parent cannot say: I
surrender my rights to discipline my children to God and thus I will stop training and disciplining them.
These are the responsibility that God has given to us they are not personal rights. That is the difference
between the rights that we should give up and the obligations that we must do.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

A mature Christian will have the ability to surrender their rights:

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and
despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say to you, Do not worry about your life, what you
will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more
than clothing? (Matthew 6:24-25)
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospels will save it.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8:35-36)

If the use of personal rights is not in accordance with the Word of God, it can hurt others because
those rights are can possibly be used in accordance with the devils principle and for personal
benefits. Some personal rights that need to be sanctified and surrendered to God:

PERSONAL RIGHTS

SURRENDERING THE RIGHTS TO GOD

TO BE SANCTIFIED
For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at
Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus (Acts 21:13)

1. FREEDOM
Paul surrendered his rights of freedom:
he was imprisoned, beaten, facing
threats of danger, fatigue, even without
food. He did all these for the sake of the
Gospel.

Are they ministers of Christ I speak as a fool I am more in

labors more abundant in stripes above measures, in prisons more
frequently, in deaths often. From the Jews five times I received forty
stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was
stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and day I have been
in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of
robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles,
in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea,
in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in
sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold
and nakedness (2 Cor. 11:23-27)

He who loves father and mother more than Me is not

worthy of Me.
(Matt. 10:37)

2. FAMILY
Family can be a blessing to us, yet if we
are not careful, family can be a bondage
and curse (that is, when we love our
family more than we love God).

He who loves father and mother more than Me is not worthy of

Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy
of Me. And he who does not take His cross and follow after Me is
not worthy after Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who
loses his life for My sake will find it (Matt. 10:37-39)
So Jesus answered and said, Assuredly I say to you, there is no
one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or
wife or children or lands, for My sake and the Gospels, who shall
not receive a hundredfold now in this time houses and brothers
and sisters and mother and children and lands with persecutions
and in the age to come, eternal life(Mark 10:29-30)

Journey of a Sure Change

3. MARRIAGE

The primary love relationship

should be your relationship with God.

Paul was unmarried, yet he was able to

control himself and set his focus on the
works of God. The consideration of
whether someone will be married or not,
and whom s/he will be married to,
should be based on how God will be
glorified through their marriage.

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what

fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what
communion has light with darkness?(2 Cor. 6:14)
And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on
you but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord
without distraction (1 Cor. 7:35)
Whom have I in heaven but You and there is none upon earth
that I desire besides You (Ps. 73:25)

Being important in the sight of God is more important

than being important in the sight of the world.

4. REPUTATION
What would you do when someone talk
badly about you? What if you are being
challenged and slandered when you are
spreading the Gospel? Sometimes God
allows such things to happen.

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all
kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be
exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they
persecuted the prophets who were before you"(Matt. 5:11)

Often times, suffering becomes a part of

those who live for Christ and work for
His glory. However, through our
sufferings we can know God closer and
His glory is revealed to us.

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is

to try you, as though some strange thing happen to you; but rejoice
to the extent that you partake of Christs sufferings, that when His
glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you
are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the
Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you(1 Pet. 4:12-14)

5. FINANCIAL
Is a Christian allowed to be a
multibillionaire? It is not wrong to be
rich, however, if our riches draw us
away from God because our hearts are
hooked on money or we have the love
of money, then it is wrong. What we
should do is use our money to glorify
God.

Money is a good servant

but a very evil master.
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought
nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But
those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into
many foolish and harmful lusts which drawn men in destruction and
perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for
which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and
pierced themselves through with many sorrows(1Tim.6:6-10)
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth(Col.
3:2)

6. EDUCATION & FUTURE

Do you have the courage to surrender
your future to God and say, Your will
be done? What if God calls you to be a
missionary or a full-time minister? Do
not waste your time learning things that
are not in line with Gods plan for you.

Journey of a Sure Change

Your future is as bright as the sun

If you commit it to the Son.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all
these things shall be added to you (Matt.6:33)

books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh
(Ecc. 12:12)

7. TALENTS , HOBBIES &
ACTIVITIES

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all

to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31)

(Narration:)

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise,
redeeming the time because the days are evil. Therefore do not be
unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is (Eph. 5:1517)

Use your talents for the glory of God.

Time is a very precious gift of God, we
need to use it well. Everything that we
do is always for the glory of God.
8. FRIENDS
When we follow Christ, we may lose
our friends. For example, we can no
longer go to places we used to go to
with our friends before we were born
again/surrendered our rights. Friends are
no longer the greatest influencer in our
lives but Christ is. We are at risk of
losing our friends, however, God
promises that He will be a friend to us.

Make sure that your friend can also become Christs friend.
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know
what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all
things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.
(John 15:15)

9. HEALTH

He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life
for My sake will find it.

What if you are called to preach the

Gospel in an area where there is a
plague of a very contagious disease?
Will you go to dirty places for the sake
of ministry?

(Matt. 10:39)

10. EAT, DRINK, AND SLEEP

Man does not only live to eat

but to glorify God.

Sometimes while preaching the

Gospel/ministering, we do not eat
enough food, drink enough water, and
get enough sleep, just as what happened
to Paul. However, Paul had surrendered
his rights to eat, drink, and sleep, and
had learned to be content in whatever
state he was for the sake of the Gospel.

And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content

(1 Tim.6:8)
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in
whatever state I am, to be content; I know how to be abased, and
I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have
learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to
suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens
me (Phil. 4:11-13)
In weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and
thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness,(2 Cor. 11:27)

When we surrender our rights to God, often He will allow certain situations to take place where our
rights would be trespassed. If we are upset when this happens, it means we have not fully surrendered
our rights. Anger can expose the rights we have not identified or surrendered.

Seven Steps to Surrender and Sanctify Your Rights

(Narration:)
Surrendering your rights to God to be sanctified is an important thing in our faith journey with Christ.
Below are several steps to surrender and sanctify your rights:

1. Believe in

BREAKTHROUGH

David was a man who surrendered his rights to God to be sanctified.

One thing that caused a breakthrough in his life was the consciousness
and the confessions that:
The earth is the Lords, and all its fullness, the world and those who
dwell therein (Ps. 24:1)

Forget your rights,

Focus on His will.

2. Begin to FOCUS

David did not focus on killing Saul although he had the opportunity for
it. He surrendered his rights for vengeance unto God, he focused on
Gods plan that was bigger than his rights:
The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lords anointed,
to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord (1
Sam. 24:5)

Make a list of rights that you have not surrendered to God. He may start
it with asking you to surrender something that is precious to you.

3. Get a REVELATION

When David refused to kill Saul, he received a revelation that saved his
life and confirmed his royal position, that was the revelation of not
stretching his hand against the Lords anointed:
The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lords
anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of
the Lord (1 Sam. 24:7)
And now I know indeed that you shall surely be king, and that the
kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand (1 Sam. 24:20)

4. Get into

WORSHIP

Although Davids rights as a son were abandoned he had to take care

of the few sheep in the field while all of the family members were
feasting with prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 16:5-11) he continued to
worship Good where he was:
When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of
me (Ps. 27:10)
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are
Your works, and that my soul knows very well (Ps. 139:14)

5. Speak

Positive words are prophetic sayings of a man who has

surrendered his rights to God.

PROPHETICALLY

Maybe God is giving you a test of purity by letting others trespass

your rights. However, continue to speak positive words that God will
use and work through all things to bring glory for Him. Also, He will
take care of those who belong to Him.
David always said positive words because he had surrendered his rights
to God. When Davids reputation was being mocked:
Now Eliab, his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men ], and Eliabs
anger was aroused against David, and he said, Why did you come down here?
And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your
pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the
battle (1 Sam. 17:28)

David did not reply but he said a positive word to defeat Goliath:
But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of
Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my
hand (1 Sam. 17:45-46)

6.

MIRACLES belong to

A miracle happened to David, Saul died and David was anointed king:
for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed
me king over them (2 Sam. 2:7)

you

7.

God always gives the best

to those who surrender their rights to Him.

PROSPERITY the
road to freedom.

Because David was willing to surrender his rights, God blessed

David.
And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him
(1 Sam. 18:14)

Not only did he succeed but David was anointed king three times.
He was anointed by Samuel (1 Sam. 16:13), anointed king in Judah
(1 Sam. 2:4), and became king over all Israel (1 Samuel 5:1-4)

Journey of a Sure Change

Abraham surrendered his rights and left his family (the rights over
his family) and went to the place that God was going to show him.
As a result, God gave him these blessings: make his name great,
make him a great nation, and protection from God (Genesis 12:2)

Moses had the rights to live in the palace yet he chose to be in the
midst of Gods people (Heb. 11:25). Eventually, he became the
deliverer of Israel.

Jesus made Himself of no reputation that God gave Him the Name
above all names (Phil. 2:7, Phil. 2:9)

A Pineapple Garden

A true story of a missionary family who served a tribe in a remote village. A missionary took all of his
family to serve in a remote village. He knew that the area was tough, no electricity, no highway, no
modern life. However, this missionary and his family made a commitment to build a church in the
middle of a tribe who was completely foreign towards Christ. Arriving in that village, the missionary
began to build a house and planted a garden. He developed a pineapple garden on his backyard.
However, how surprised he was when one morning he saw the pineapple trees that was close to harvest
time was completely destroyed, and all of the pineapples were gone and not a single one was left. He
knew that it was the villagers who did it. Big heartedly, he re-planted his garden with pineapples. The
same thing happened again! Eventually, he decided to plant the pineapples and to watch over at nights
before harvest time. True enough, the villagers sneaked into his garden at night time to pick the
pineapples. However, the missionary was now ready with a rifle in his hand. He fired a few warning
shots on the air and the people who were about to steal his pineapples were scattered here and there. It
happened a few times. However, there was no peace in this missionary heart because he was thinking,
how could he preach the Gospel if his relationship with the local villagers was bad. Finally, one day he
decided to surrender his rights over that pineapple garden to the Lord. He said to the Lord that from that
day on, the pineapple garden was no longer his but the Lords. As usual, when harvest time was
approaching, a few villagers sneaked into the garden to pick the pineapples. However, unlike usual,
there were no gunshots heard at all. He let the villagers pick the pineapples and the following day he
continued to plant the garden as if nothing had happened. This made the villagers wonder that they
began to come to the missionary and asked him why he was no longer furious, no longer chased them
or scared them away with the gunshots. The missionary answered that the garden was no longer his but
Gods because he had surrendered that garden to God. Hearing this, some of the villagers were shocked
and they had no more courage to steal the pineapples. Finally, the missionary could harvest the
pineapples himself, but far more important, he could harvest new souls, the villagers who repented one
by one because of the Gospel that the missionary had spoken.
Today you learn to surrender your rights to God to be sanctified. The rights that you do not
surrender nor sanctified can be hurtful to others.
On the contrary, you will have an extraordinary sense of security and strong confidence the
moment you surrender your rights to God, because you know that God will preserve what belongs to
Him. Surrender your rights to Him today!

SPIRITUAL LEADER A SAFE Umbrella

(OHP : D1.76 )
(Narration:)

The things you are going to learn:

1. The principle of authority
2. Recognizing four types of authority
3. The role of a spiritual leader to you
4. Seven steps to build attitude of submission and obedience to the leader

Obey Immediately!

This is a true story in Zaire as told by Donald G. Barnhouse. A little boy of a missionary was playing in
their frontyard when suddenly the father shouted, Phillip, obey me immediately!! Fall on your belly and
lie down! Immediately the little boy did what his father said without any question. Now crawl here
quickly! He obeyed. Stand up and run to daddy! Phillip quickly responded without asking any
question, running to his fathers arms. When he looked back to the tree where he was playing just now,
he saw a big deadly snake hanging on one of the branches! Phillip could have moved slowly and asked a
question a child would normally ask when his parent tell him to do something, Why should I do that?
Or, he could have waited a few moments before obeying his father. However, Phillip obeyed his father
immediately and his obedience saved his life.
Philips obedience in the story above has saved his life. Likewise, our obedience and submission to leaders
will affect our spiritual growth and life. In our daily lives, we have relationship with others, as leader and as
the one being led; as leaders such as husband, supervisor, pastor, government officer, or as the one being led
such as wife/child, employee, congregation, and citizen. From this lesson, we will understand Gods
purpose in placing a leader over our lives and how we can enjoy the benefits through obedience to that
leader

The Principles of Authority

The story about honoring the leadership is found in Numbers 12:1-15.
Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for he
had married an Ethiopian woman. (2) And they said, Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He
not spoken through us also? And the Lord heard it. (3) Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all
men who were on the face of the earth. (4) Suddenly the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, Come out,
you three, to the tabernacle of meeting! So the three came out. (5) Then the Lord came down in the pillar of
cloud and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam. And they both went forward (6)
Then He said, Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, make Myself known to him in
a vision, and I speak to him in a dream (7) Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. (8) I
speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark saying. And he sees the form of the Lord. Why then
were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses. (9) So the anger of the Lord was aroused against them,
and He departed. (10) And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became
leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turn toward Miriam, and there she was leper (11) So Aaron said to
Moses, Oh, my lord! Please do not lay this sin on us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have
sinned. (12) Please do not let her be as one dead, whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his
mothers womb! (13) So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, Please heal her, O God, I pray! (14) Then the
Lord said to Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, would she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut
out of the camp seven days, and after that she may be received again. (15) So Miriam was shut out of the camp
seven days, and the people did not journey on till Miriam was brought in again.

Miriam was Moses sister, and as his big sister, she may be able to advise Moses. However,
when she touched the position of leadership that God had set on Moses, then God Himself
would stand for Moses. Rebellion against Moses means rejecting God who has chosen him.
This is similar to refusing and insulting an ambassador which also means insulting the
government of the country that has sent him.
Some principles of authority in the Word of God:
1. God is the source of all authorities
God is the source of all authorities. God has given all power and authorities in heaven and
on earth to Jesus (Matthew 28:18). Jesus has delegated His authority to church leaders,
parents, and other leaders. The word authority is originated in the word exousia which
means honor, power, influence, strength, rights. The authority that someone has is
something that is given, so the people who are in the leadership position must serve as a
servant and lead by example (1 Peter 5:3).
Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth
(Matthew 28:18)

2. God commands us to obey our leader

We submit and obey our leader on the basis of respect and because we recognize their
position before God. If we submit and obey our leader, that means we submit and obey
God.
Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give
account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable to you (Hebrews 13:17)

(Discuss What if our leader tells us to do something that is not in line with the Word
of God?)
Only if our leader asks us to do something that is contradicting to the Word that we should
obey the higher authority God and His Word. However, we still need to do it with the
right attitude, which is respectfully.
3. The sin of rebellion is like the sin of witchcraft!
The sin of rebellion against our leader is the oldest sin. Lucifer, one of Gods angels who
led the heavenly praises rebelled against God. He was finally cast out of heaven and is
now known as the devil/satan which means enemy.
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground,
which didst weaken the nations! (Isaiah 14:12)

Therefore, sin of rebellion is in the same level with witchcraft. When we go our own way
separated from the leadership that God has placed on os, this means we release ourselves
from the covering of leadership and autority of God:
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry (1 Sam. 15:23)

4. Obedience and submission is a matter of heart attitude

Submission is giving ourselves willingly to be under the covering, protection and leading
of a leader, while obedience is doing what our leader tells us to do. If someone does what
s/he is told but criticizing/talk negatively/looking for the leaders faults behind the leaders
back then s/he is not submissive to the leader. Obedience and submission is not only an
action it is an attitude. This obedience also brings a great blessing because tho who obey
the leader will also receive authority.
For I also a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and
to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. (Matthew 8:9)

5. God is able to change our leaders heart

The kings heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes
(Proverbs 21:1)

Believe that God is able to change the heart of our leaders if we pray fervently (James 5:16).
If you think what your leader does is not right, you can pray for them with a right heart
before God, which is in submission and respect to them. God is more concerned about our
response to our circumstance than the circumstance itself. He wants us to give the same
response as His Son, though having such position, had learned to obey through what He
suffered through (Hebrews 5:8).

Recognizing Four Types of Authority

God has placed leaders (spiritual authorities) in our lives to give us protection. Below are some leaderships God
has placed in different aspects of our lives: family, government, church, and workplace.

FAMILY

GOVERNMENT

CHURCH

WORKPLACE

FATHER

NATIONAL LEADER

CHURCH LEADERS

EMPLOYER

REGIONAL
OFFICERS

CONGREGATION

EMPLOYEE

And we urge you, brethren, to

recognize those who labor among
you, and are over you in the Lord
and admonish you, and to esteem
them very highly in love for their
works sake. Be at peace among
yourselves (1 Thess. 5:12-13)

Servants, obey in all things

your masters according to the
flesh, not with eyeservice, as
men-pleasers, but in sincerity
of heart, fearing God (Col.
3:22)

MOTHER
CHILDREN
Children, obey your parents
in all things, for this is well
pleasing to the Lord (Col..
3:20)
Children, obey your parents
in the Lord, for this is right.
Honor your father and
mother"which is the first
commandment with a
promise that it may go
well with you and that you
may enjoy long life on the
earth.. (Eph 6:1-3)
My son, keep your fathers
command, and do not
forsake the law of your
mother. Bind them
continually around your
neck (Proverbs 6:20-21)
The eye that mocks his
father, and scorns
obedience to his mother, the
ravens of the valley will
pick it out, and the young
eagles will eat it (Proverbs
30:17)
A fool despises his fathers
instruction, but he who
receives reproof is prudent
(Proverbs 15:5)

Journey of a Sure Change

Therefore submit yourselves to

every ordinance of man for the
Lords sake, whether to the
king as supreme, or the
governors, as to those who are
sent by him for the punishment
for evildoers and for the praise
of those who do good
(1 Peter 2:13-14)
Let every soul be subject to the
governing authorities. For
there is no authority except
from God, and the authorities
that exist are appointed by God
(Romans 13:1)
Do you want to be unafraid of
the authority? Do what is good,
and you will have praise from
the same. For he is Gods
minister to you, for good.
(Romans 13:3-4)
Therefore you must be subject,
not only because of wrath but
also for conscience sake
(Romans 13:5)
For because of this you also
pay taxes, for they are Gods
ministers attending continually
to this very thing. Render
therefore to all their due
(Romans 13:6-7)

Obey those who rule over you,

and be submissive, for they watch
out for your souls, as those who
must give account. Let them do so
with joy and not with grief, for
that would be unprofitable for you
(Hebrews 13:17)
Let the elders who rule well be
counted worthy of double honor,
especially those who labor in the
word and doctrine. For the
Scripture says, You shall not
muzzle an ox while it treads out
the grain, and, The laborer is
worthy of his wages (1 Timothy
5:17-18)
The elders who are among you I
exhortShepherd the flock of
God which is among you, serving
as overseers, not by constraint but
willingly, not for dishonest gain
but eagerly; nor as being lords
over those entrusted to you, but
being examples to the flock (1
Peter 5:1-3)

And whatever you do, do it

heartily as to the Lord and not
to men, knowing that from the
Lord you will receive the
reward of the inheritance; for
you serve the Lord Christ
(Colossians 3:23-24)
Servants, be submissive to your
masters with all fear, not only
to the good and gentle, but also
to the harsh (1 Peter 2:18)
Let as many servants as are
under the yoke count their own
masters worthy of all honor, so
that the name of God and His
doctrine may not be
blasphemed (1 Timothy 6:1)
{a} And those who have
believing masters, let them not
despise them because they are
brethren, but rather serve them
because those who are
benefited are believers and
beloved. {b} Teach and exhort
these things. (1 Timothy 6:2)

III.

The Leaders Role In Your Life

1. A leader provides orderliness

In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes (Judges 21:25)

In the days of the judges, the people of Israel were in chaos because each individual wanted to have
authority over themselves and did what their hearts wanted, according to their own judgment of
what was right or wrong. If every one seeks to fulfill their own desires as they will, each of them
will pay a great price for it.

2. The leader is God-given umbrella of protection

The essence of submission is not being under the domination of our leader but being under the
protection of our leader. Once we come out of that God-given protection, we are vulnerable to
temptations greater than our own strength because we are in the devils territory. Thus, rebellion is
like the sin of witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:23)
Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must
give account (Heb. 13:17)
For he is Gods minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in
vain; for he is Gods minister, an avenge to execute wrath on him who practices evil (Rom. 13:4)

(Note for teacher: you can discuss case 1 on the back page)
3. Through leaders God matures His people
For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till
we all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the
measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and
fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness
by which they lie in wait to deceive (Eph. 4:12-15)

Our spiritual leader:

a). equips and prepares believers for ministry in the Kingdom of God.
b). edifies and grows the Church.
c). brings believers into maturity, both as individual and as a body.
d). unifies His Church in faith.

Journey of a Sure Change

4. God uses leaders to form our characters so that we can grow in wisdom

The only moment in Jesus life that involved the principle of authority was when He was a
teenager in the temple (Luke 2:49). Did He stay in the temple or did He follow His parents? At the
end Jesus chose to follow His parents, leaving the temple. It was recorded later that Jesus increased
in wisdom and greatness, and was loved by God and men (Luke 2:52).
Everyone has weaknesses in characters that need to be perfected. God uses those in leadership
authority to carry on this task. Like a diamond (us) being formed by God through the hands of the
jewelry experts (our leaders) :
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him
(Proverbs 22:15)

(Note for teacher: You can discuss case 3 on the back page)
5. God uses the leader to give clear direction for decision making in our lives
Right decision according to faith is knowing what God wants us to do, and the most foundational
aspect of faith is knowing how God gives direction through those He has put over our lives. When
the young centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant, he understood the principle of authority that he
could say that the Kingdom of God is built on the same structure. Jesus said that He had never seen
such a great faith amongst Israel (Matthew 8:9-10)

Those who cannot obey, cannot rule.

IV.

Seven Steps to Build Submission & Obedience to the Leader

Understanding that submission and obedience to the leader is the foundation in building your spiritual life
and achieving success in life, below are seven steps to build submission and obedience:
A clean heart is half of the solution.

1. Believe in

BREAKTHROUGH

2. Begin to FOCUS

First of all, experience a breakthrough in your life. Cleanse your

conscience:
Change the attitudes that may have offended our leader.
Fulfill the leaders order that we have not been able to fulfill. In
humility obey the leader (Heb. 13:17)
Admit if we are wrong and ask for forgiveness.
Learn to let go limiting your freedom so that you will not offend
other peoples taste/thought/choice.
Keep respecting and supportting them (1 Thes. 5:12-13)
Listen to the Word of God our leader delivered (Rom. 10:15-17; 1
Thes. 2:13)
A positive attitude is the seed for positive results.
Focus on your attitude. Is there any attitude I need to correct?
Independent attitude is the root of unfaithfulness.
Attitude of accusation is the root of self-righteousness.
Attitude of unthankfulness is the root of pride.
Laziness is the root of dishonesty and poverty.
Bitterness is the root of selfishness.
Impure spirit is the root of self-contentment.
There are things that I cannot force; I have to adjust myself to.
There are times where the primary change that needed to be done is
to change my perception.
(C. M. Ward)
There is not a single problem that
can prevent creative thinking

3. Get a REVELATION

Get a revelation to understand your leaders heart.

Ask your leader what his/her purpose and desires are.
Find out your leaders way or thinking and perception.
Ask your leader to show you your blindspot, maybe you do not see
an opportunity the way your leaders see it..
Pay attention, maybe there are greater goals that God wants to
achieve through that situation.
Get a revelation for a creative way out.
Cast out the rebellious spirit so that you can be creative.
Get a revelation in times of difficulties from the book of Proverbs.
Think of another way how your leader can see his goal
accomplished.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

The heart of the king is in Gods hand.

Give God the time to change your leaders heart.

4. Get into

WORSHIP

Worship God and pray for His perfect will to be done in every
circumstance.
God will bring pressures from the outside to help change your
leader.
It is also possible that your leader might put pressures on you.
You need to realize that God uses those pressures for His benefits.
Respond correctly; this will help your leader change his mind.
Pray for your leaders (Rom. 15:30, 2 Thes. 3:1).
Gods prophetic purpose is greater
than the personal benefits.

5. Speak

PROPHETICALLY

Pray, speak, and convince yourself so that Gods prophetic purpose

can be done when you come before your leader to appeal:
Keep a servant spirit and a teachable heart.
Explain your beliefs without being judgmental.
Present other / more creative alternatives.
Explain how they can accomplish the purpose.
Give the final decision to your leader.
6.

MIRACLES belong to
you

Daniel was given the kings food and the wine which the king drank.
However, Daniel had a conviction not to defile himself with that food.
Daniel did not rebel, rather, he understood that the purpose was to give
him enough nutrition, that was why he took another creative way yet in
submission:
Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to
eat and water to drink. Then let our countenances be examined before you,
and the countenances of the young men who eat the portion of the kings
delicacies; and as you see fit, so deal with your servants (Daniel 1:12-13)

Miracles happened for him:

And at the end of ten days their countenance appeared better and fatter in
flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the kings delicacies
(Daniel 1:15).

God prospered Daniel and his three friends:

7.

As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and skill in all
literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and
dreams (Daniel 1:17)

PROSPERITY the
road to freedom.

The 200th Hug

(Harold H. Bloomfield, M.D.)

My father skin has begun to wrinkle as he laid surrounded by monitor and infusion in the
ICU. He used to be a well-built man but now he has lost 35 pounds. My father suffered a
terrible pancreatic cancer. The doctors have tried everything yet they could only say that he
had 6 months to live. The next few days, my father sat on the bed and I came up to him and
said, Dad, I am terribly sad to see what happens to you. This has also helped me see how
Ive kept a distant between us for so long and it made me hesitant to say I love you. I
came up to my father to hug him but his arms were tensed. Come on, Dad, I want to hug
you. For a few moments, he was surprised. Expressing such love was not part of our
family tradition. I asked him to sit up straight so I could reached my arms to him but he was
more stiffed and I could feel that he was refusing it. I began to think, Well, I do not want
to be treated this way either. If he wants to die and leave me cold-heartedly without love,
it is fine with me. For years, I have used my fathers coldness to blame him and refuse
him, Lookhe doesnt care. However, this time I think again and realize that this hug is
also good for me, not only for him. I want to show him how much I care about him, no
matter how hard he tried to close the door. My father is half-German who was more
concerned about duties. He was probably told in his childhood that a man should not have
feelings.
Finally, I let go my attitude that put the blame on him and took the challenge to love him,
Come on, Dad, put your arms here. Now hug, yesgood! When I showed him how to
hug, something happened. It felt like the words I love you came out of his hug. For years
we only shook our hands coldly and said, Hello, how are you? Finally,.my fathers
coldness melted after months and he could hug me with his heart. However, it took my
decision to hug him first. Approximately after the 200th hug, my father could say I love
you.!
If your father or leader is cold-hearted, your warmth manner towards them can change the
situation. In our relationship with the leader that God has place over our lives, our attitude is the
number one issue. When God sees you submit to and obey, He then knows that you can be trusted
to lead those who will also submit to and obey you.

HOLINESS
The city of Corinth was a very beautiful industrial city, located on a hill with slopes ended on
the seashore. Many people with various cultures lived in that cosmopolitan city. Beside
being known for its prosperity, this city was also known for worship with prostitutions in the
temples to the goddess Aphrodite. So famous Corinth was for its immorality, that a saying
emerged in the society: if someone is called to be like a Corinthian that means s/he is
identified as a prostitute. Paul wrote a letter to the Corinthians church with this background.
Reading: 2 Corinthians 6:14 7:1
1. What picture did Paul give concerning the unbelievers and the believers in Corinth?

2. Why did the Corinthians church have to separate themselves? (2 Cor. 6:14-16)

3. What did they sanctify themselves from? (2 Cor 7:1)

4. In your opinion, what differences does someone make if he realizes that his body is the

What Do You Think?

The following is a daily occurrence that you might find. If you are asked to give an advice,
what advice would you give? Read the story below to discuss it with the class next week.
1. Married or not?
A 21 year-old independent girl who lives in another city is going to be married to a man.
She believes that it is Gods will for her to marry this man. The girls parents are not
believers but this girl and the man have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. This girls
parents strongly refuse the wedding plan and said that he is not the right man for her. Their
marriage will not go well. However, this girl and the man feel that their marriage will go
well. What would your advice be to this girl? And what is the reason?
Following her heart, what she believes as the will of God.
Break up with her boyfriend.

2. Going to University or Bible School?

An 18 year-old man is planning on getting into ministry after High School. He prayed and
eventually decided to apply to a Bible School. His parents have lack of understanding of
the importance of ministry and theological education and they warned him that they will
stop the financial support unless he goes to the university in their local area. His parents
said, if he choose any education other than theology, he can always go back to his
profession if he fails in ministry. This young man said that he did not plan to fail in
ministry and he needed this theological education. What would your advice be and give the
reason why?
Fund his own school.
Go to university.

3. Secretly or openly?
A young teenage girl sneaks out of the house every Saturday to attend the youth service at
church. She knew that her mother would be upset if she knows that her daughter is going to
church. Therefore, this girl always sneaks out secretly. The service at church did a lot to
help this young woman grow. What would be your advice and give the reason why?
Continue to come to the youth service at church secretly
Stop going to the service if her mother minds

Below is the answer to the homework given to the I Grow students. The purpose is
so that as an I Grow teacher you can direct the answer of the students accordingly.

Case 1
Married or not?
In solving this case, there are 4 questions to be answered:
a. Has the girl shown her maturity?
One of the reasons why the girls parents disagreed about their daughters wedding
might be because they felt a wrong attitude in either the girl or the man that would
negatively affect their marriage. One of the negative attitudes might be stubbornness
and seeking their personal benefits. The parents might feel that both of them want to
be the center of the attention and they have not learned how to submit to the
authority. They have not learned to put the others pleasure and happiness above their
own. A step of correction can be taken if they choose to postpone their wedding. If,
after a while they still feel that it is Gods will for them to be married, then God will be
able to change their parents minds.
b. What is the leaders / the parents motivations?
When the parents refuse to bless their childrens wedding, it must not be to hinder them
from happiness but to bring them everlasting happiness. They might want the children
to learn first because as parents they had gone through major problems in their
marriage due to their attitudes. They might want their children to avoid unnecessary
problems. Parents also know that if something happens to the children, the parents will
also be involved. Every parent wants their children to be happy in their marriage and
they want to love the grandchildren that will be born then.
c. Have they tried other alternatives?
Discuss with the parents what characters she needs to seek in her spouse.
Give a chance to the parents to know the man before speaking about their wedding
plan.
Ask the parents what areas they both would need to change/upgrade.
Ask the parents to give guidance so she can see whether she has found the right
person.
d. Have they given the time to God to change the decision?
When this girl follows the alternatives above, her parents ask the man to finish his
school and get himself financially prepared for the wedding. They feel that if he is not
the right one, the attraction between them will disappear as time goes by. All this time,
both of them have built good personality that the girls parents have a good impression
on the man. This will cause the girls parents to eventually bless their wedding plan.

Case 2
Going to Bible School or University?
In solving this case, there are 4 questions that have to be answered:
a. Is the young man mature enough in his character?
The father of this 18-year old man feels that this young man is a little unthankful,
stubborn, and insensitive towards other people. Although his father is not a
Christian, he knows that such attitude will destroy his son in ministry. The right
response to the fathers advice can be a step to build personal character that the son
needs to have.
b. What is the leaders / parents motivation?
The fathers purpose of sending the son to the university is not to stop his sons
desire for ministry but to provide for him the things he will need to be successful in
life. The father might feel that the education in the university will help build
maturity in his son. The father might also want to be proud of his sons work. He
might want his son to appreciate what the father has given to him for his education.
The father might also want to open a line of communication with the son, so that
the son can respond correctly to the fathers advice in the future.
c. Has he tried other alternatives?
Accept the ministry challenge before his eyes, which is to help the father be
interested at spiritual things. Ministry to the family is the primary ministry.
Cooperate with the father to see what major in the university that might help
him in the future ministry.
Study the word systematically for himself while contacting some of the people
in the university that might be able to help him prepare himself for ministry in
the future.
d. Has he given the time for God to change the decision?
When this young man follows his fathers advice and goes to the university, not
only would he receive helpful training for his future but he also won his fathers
heart. The father is now more open to spiritual things and encourages him to be
involved in ministry.

Case 3
Secretely or Openly?
In solving this case, there are 4 questions need to be answered:
a. Is the teenage girl mature in character?
The teenage girl who secretly came to the youth service is actually rebellious in
attitude. She is very selfish and could not care less about her mother. By
responding rightly to her mother, the mother could actually see that her teenage
girl has changed because of attending the youth meetings
b. What is the leaders / parents motivation?
The mothers purpose was not to stop her daughter from going to church but to
build obedience in her to her parents. Including, taking the responsibility for her
homework instead of running here and there all the time. The mother might also
notice that her daughters friends are also disobedient to their parents but yet
accusing their parents as unspiritual unlike themselves. The mother wants to
avoid her daughter from adopting the same attitude.
c. Has she tried another alternative?
Apologize to her mother for her attitude and mistake.
Surrendering her mother to God before she asks her mother whether she could
go to the youth service, with an understanding that God can speak to her
through her mother
Choosing to be thankful for whatever answer her mother would give and will
continue to build the right attitude in the house.
d. Has she given time for God to change the decision?
That girl has made a commitment in her prayer that she would accept and be
thankful for whatever answer her mother would give her. When she asked for
permission to go to the service and her mother said, No! You may not go to the
service. You stay home tonight! The girls response would remain calm, Is there
anything you want me to do at home tonight? This response surprised her mother
and she said, Yes. Go to the kitchen and wash the dishes! Joyfully she washed
the dishes and before she was finished, her mother came to the kitchen and calmly
asked, Have you done your homework for next week? The girl replied that she
had done all the homework. A few minutes later, the mother came back to the
kitchen and said, Because you have done your homework and washed the dishes,
you may go to the service but you have to be home before 9!

A Knock In the Night

(Narration:)
A married man once was sent by his company to do the business outside the town. He stayed in a hotel
by himself. At midnight, about one oclock, there was a knock on his door. Surprised, that man walked
to the door and looked through the little hole to see who was the one knocking on his door at the middle
of the night. His heart beated fast as he saw a beautiful woman standing in front of his door on a mini
outfit. The woman knocked on his door again. Openor NotOpen or Not these contradicting
thoughts flashed inside his mind. No one sees, no one will know he thought. He was tempted to
open the door but eventually he had enough courage to say no to himself. Immediately he turned off
the light and tried to sleep. He heard the knock stopped on his door, moved to the next room where his
friend stayed. The knock had stopped, apparently his friend opened the door and spent the rest of the
night with that beautiful woman. The next morning he woke up and called his friends room to ask him
out for breakfast. How surprised he was when he found out that his partner had been robbed all his
money, even his suitcase and his clothes, by the beautiful woman who knocked on his door. He thought
he would spend a wonderful evening with a beautiful woman but in reality.
So many people think that they will enjoy a beautiful night with their girlfriend or other beautiful girls
yet they do not realize that behind all that, the devil steals, kills, and destroys. The devil robs the joy and
peace, kills with all kinds of diseases and destroys them in their sins. The sexual sin that is beautifully and
romantically camouflaged in the movies, TV series and novels are indeed a deadly poison.

The society today is very sensual discotheques, massage parlors, karaoke rooms, and teenage prostitution
widely spread around the city. Immorality appears clearly in the movies we see on TV or cinemas that lead
to pornography and the justification of adultery.
In such situation, living in holiness is an absolute call for the people of God. Holiness brings complete joy,
peace and happiness, besides eternal life. Holiness brings a special blessing for Gods people, which we will
discuss in this lesson.

Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? (1 Samuel 6:20)
There is none holy like the Lord, for there is none besides You, nor is there any rock like our God (1
Samuel 2:2)

God is a holy God. He is perfect, pure, blameless, excellent, and worthy of all praise and honor. He
calls us to be holy, as He is holy:
But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, Be holy, for
I am holy (1 Peter 1:15-16)

A. The Definition of Holiness

The word holy in Hebrew is qodesh, which means a place or a thing dedicated for something,
separated, considered as sacred.

While the Greek word for holy is hagios which describes a thing or a pure and blameless moral
state.

From the definitions above, we can conclude that holiness is:

Separated from anything imperfect, impure or unclean.

A pure life, separated and dedicated to be more like God.
Particularly in this lesson, holiness is:
Purity of moral that is able to overcome the temptations of this life, in particular sexual
temptations.

B. Holiness For Your Happiness

(Narration:)

God created man and woman with sexual drive and it is a good thing.
Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good (Gen. 1:31)

God gives sexual desire only in marriage for:

1. PROCREATION to have children.
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue
it (Gen. 1:28)

2. IDENTIFICATION the unity of husband and wife.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall
become one flesh (Eph. 5:31)
Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate (Mark 10:9)

3. RECREATION the pleasure and happiness of husband and wife.

Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth (Proverbs 5:18)

The best sexual relationship will be in the lives of those who follow through Gods plan
completely. This relationship is the intimate seal of the expression of true love and total
surrender that unifies and binds a man and a woman in marriage forever. Outside marriage, sex:
Hinders true and pure friendship.
Brings about guilt and condemnation.
Builds the sense of disrespectful, distrust, and unfaithfulness.
Deceives your mind.
Produces unwanted generation that often leads to the practice of abortion.

Sexual Freedom and Crucial Facts!

(Narration:)

Sexual freedom is not the rights to do whatever we want,

but the power to do whatever is worth doing.

Many people want to exercise this sexual freedom because they think that this is the norm of
modern society and everybody does it. However, the fact is, not everybody does that!!
Remember, NOT EVERYBODY IS DOING IT!
People want to be free and they think that freedom means the rights to do whatever things they
want. However, the true definition of freedom is the power to do what one should or must do.
Everybody can do what s/he wants to do but only those who are truly free will have the power
and the authority to choose wisely what s/he must do.
The facts show that there is no such thing sexual freedom. Nothing is free of this sexual
freedom; the price that has to be paid is very costly:
Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys
his own soul (Proverbs 6:32)

Sexual Sins

(Narration:)

SEXUAL SINS

THE WORD OF GOD

Adultery is not only in action; someone who sees his/her
opposite sex and desires her/him in his/her heart, already
commits adultery.

1. Pornography

It is originated in Greek pornographos, which is

fully described picture. Pornography means to
Whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already
look at/read the description of erotic conducts
committed adultery with her in his heart"(Matt. 5:28)
(both in pictures and in words) to gain sexual
pleasure.
But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it

not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints(Eph.

5:3)
And many will follow their destructive ways, because of
whom the way of truth will be blasphemed (2 Peter 2:2)

2. Lust

A very strong desire. For example: unnatural What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On
sexual desire.
the contrary, I would not have known sin except through
the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless
the law had said, You shall not covet" (Rom. 7:7)
It was God who made the institution of marriage.
Therefore, He is against those who want to destroy
marriages through adultery.

3. Adultery

Illegal sexual relationship, committed by those

who are already married, outside their legal You shall not commit adultery (Exodus 20:14)
marital bound (not with their wedded spouse).

The man who commits adultery with another mans wife,

he who commits adultery with his neighbors wife, the
adulterer and the adulteress. Shall surely be put to death
(Leviticus 20:10)
Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is
outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality
sins against his own body (1 Cor. 6:18)

4. Fornication

Sexual relationship committed by unmarried

couples.
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you
should abstain from sexual immorality (1 Thess. 4:3)

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are:

adultery, fornication, uncleanness, (Gal. 5:19)

5. Uncleanness
Focusing oneself to gain sexual satisfaction
through his/her own body (example:
(masturbation, sexual fantasy).

The Process of Temptation Leading to Sin

(Narration:)
A huge 300-year old redwood tree suddenly fell and nobody knew why. The tree had stood through
storms, thunders and earthquakes for hundreds years what made this tree fall? In later research, the
scientists found that a lot of small tiny bugs got into the tree trunk and they destroyed the fibers of the
tree and ate the tree from the inside.
Likewise is the life of a Christian. If a believer suddenly falls into adultery, if we look closely, that
believer must have compromised the small tiny things in his life and has kept ungodly thoughts in his
mind.
How does someone fall into sin? If he gives in to temptation. Temptation plus sin will produce death.

TEMPTATION + SIN = DEATH

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been proved, he will receive the crown of life
which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted by
God; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he
is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin,
when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren (James 1:12-16)

(OHP : D1.92)

People are tempted by their own desire

(Narration:)
The Word of God says that God never tempts anyone but everyone is tempted by their own desire. For
example: an employer was in need of a secretary and so he put up an ad. Later on, 10 application arrived in
his desk. He called the first applicant, an experienced secretary who is quite old. He thought, he will accept
this lady so she can start working immediately. However, this employer then thought to himself, it would
probably be batter to interview all applicants. So, he called the other applicants one by one.
You are free to choose your action,
but you are not free to choose the consequences of your action.
1. Being enticed by the lust of the eye
For example: this employer has gotten to applicant number 10, a very attractive and beautiful young
woman. The employer invited this woman into his office for an interview. Is it wrong to be alone
with a woman in an office room? Of course not. Apparently, this woman is inexperienced.
However, the employer has been enticed by the lust of his eye. He began to rationalize (legitimate
his thought): Maybe I can teach her Although she is inexperience, she is beautiful and this might
attract the customers... All the thoughts and excuses eventually made him choose to accept this
secretary.
2. Act when the desire has been conceived.
For example: apparently the employer indeed considered this woman attractive. Is it wrong to
consider somebody attractive? There is a saying, You cannot stop the birds from flying over your
head but you can stop them from building their nest on your head. Likewise, you may not be able
to stop or avoid the temptations from coming to your life, however, if you dont immediately cast
them away and rather, entertain or preserve them, you have indeed opened the door for disaster!
Unfortunately, this employer did not cast away the birds on his head. He looked and enjoyed this
beautiful woman, and she responded to him. The employers desire has been conceived and he
began to act.

It is easier to overcome the early desire

than fulfilling all the desires that come afterwards.
(Benjamin Franklin)
Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

3. Sin conceived and when it is full-grown, brings forth death

For example: eventually this employer and his secretary committed adultery. The sin has been
conceived. This adultery brings forth death:
Spiritual death: relationship with God is damaged, unable to pray, feel Gods presence and
guidance.
Death in soul: unstable emotion, pretention, mental pressure, guilt, depression.
Physical death: sexual transmitted disease, including AIDS that leads to death.
Eternal death: eternal judgment in hell.
4. The door to deception is now open.
The devils deception: giving the opportunity for the devil to deceive, tempt, and influence us.
Mans deception: being deceived by false perceptions
Self-deception: deceiving oneself.
Do not be deceived
God is not the source of temptation.
The consequence of sin is death!

(OHP : D1.93)

VI.

Seven Steps to Guard Our Holiness

(Narration:)
The followings are the steps of how a person can guard his/her holiness:

1. Believe in

BREAKTHROUGH

Begin your breakthrough by detesting sin

Begin your breakthrough by detesting sin. Reject sin from the beginning,
flee from sin.
Flee also youthful lust (2 Timothy 2:22)
But he [Joseph] left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.
(Genesis 39:13)

Stay away from dangerous area, take a step backwards!

2. Begin to FOCUS

1. Focus on the Word: Your body is the temple of God

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then
take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly
not! (1 Cor. 6:15)
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is
in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were
bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit,
which Gods (1 Cor. 6:19-20)

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

2. Focus on God, not on the pleasure of sin

Realize that the pleasure of sin is temporary, yet the result is deadly:
Increasing the risk/consequence of sin
Reducing the pleasure of sin.
For the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23)
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life
and peace (Rom. 8:6)
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I
have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more
abundantly (John 10:10)

Even after repentance, someone still has to bear the consequence of

his sin. David repented when Nathan rebuked his sin of adultery
with Bathsheba, yet the wage of sin that he had to bear was bitter:
The child that Bathsheba conceived had to die (2 Samuel 12:14)
The sword shall never depart from his house (2 Sam 12:10)
Davids wives will be given to his neighbor (2 Samuel 12:11)
The wage of sin is so very serious, therefore do not play around with sin!
Get a revelation to clean the infections
3. Get a REVELATION

Infection is a poisonous disease that spreads all over in a healthy body.

Nobody suddenly falls into adultery or other sexual sins. These sins
usually start out from uncleaned infections:
1. The infection of HIDDEN SINS
He who covers his sins will not prosper; but whoever confesses and
forsakes them will have mercy (Proverbs 28:13)
Who can understand his errors? Cleans me from secret faults (Psalm
19:12)
Therefore, do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be
revealed, and hidden that will not be known (Matthew 10:26)

2. The infection of WORLDLY THOUGHTS

Evil mind evil desires evil deeds.
Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in
their shame who set their mind on earthly things (Phil. 3:19)
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth (Col. 3:2)

3. The infection of IDOLATRY

Idolatry is everything that we put above God. Modern idolatry
might not be made of wood or stone statue but money, career,
business, position, etc..
Little children, keep yourselves from idols (1 John 5:21)

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

"You shall not make idols for yourselves; neither a carved image nor a
sacred pillar shall you rear up for yourselves; nor shall you set up an
engraved stone in your land, to bow down to it; for I am the Lord your
God (Leviticus 26:1)

4. The infection of THE WORLD SYSTEM

The infection of the world system means: the worldly influence that
comes into our mind, habit, life, such as:
The spirits of this world
Worldly performance/appearance
Worldly philosphy
Worldly entertainment
Worldly standard
Worldly habit
Worldly values
Worldly relationship
Worldly conducts
Worldly literature
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present
your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your
reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed b the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that
good and acceptable and perfect will of God (Rom. 12:1-2)
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the
world is enmity to God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the
world makes himself an enemy of God (James 4:4)

Worship builds the fear of God

that makes us fearful to commit sin.

4. Get Into

WORSHIP

In mercy and truth atonement is provided for iniquity; and by the fear of the
Lord one departs from evil (Pro. 16:6)
The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the
good (Pro. 15:3)

Positive words and response towards temptation

will take you to happiness.

5. Speak

PROPHETICALLY

6.

MIRACLES belong to
you

Speak and believe you will not be tempted beyond your strength and
that God will give you the way out (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Make a deal with your eyes, control your eyes (Job 31:1) Your eyes
are the window of your heart.

As soon as David repented, God forgave him and a miracle happened:

And Nathan said to David: The Lord also has put away your sin; you
shall not die (2 Samuel 12:13)

The miracle of salvation came upon Zachaeus household when he

repented from his sins:
And Jesus said to him: Today salvation has come to this house, because
he also is a son of Abraham (Luke 19:9)

Holiness brings Gods blessings.

PROSPERITY the
road to freedom.

Gods blessings are available for those who walk in holiness: joy, peace,
deliverance, victory, mission, and other blessings. Holiness is the sign
of those who have overcome and been blessed.

Before Moses was sent to DELIVER Israel, he was sanctified

(Exodus 3:5).
Before Joshua received the VICTORY over Jericho, he was
sanctified (Joshua 5:15).
Before Isaiah was called to be Gods MESSENGER, he was
sanctified (Isaiah 6:4-8).

1. Only in holiness we can see God

Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one
will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)
God is holy, therefore only those who are holy can meet Him. To
meet with God means that we can feel the presence of God when we
pray and receive the answer to our prayers.
2. No more place for the devil
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world
is coming, and he has nothing in Me (John 14:30)
Although Jesus was the blameless Son of God, yet an important
principle of holiness was shown in this scripture. When the ruler of
this earth finds nothing in us and finds no gap to enter through, he
has no place to step his foot in our lives or to take charge over our
lives. Without a room for is foot to touch ground, the enemy has
been defeated.
3. Holiness gives us the courage to testify and the power to win
souls
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the
praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His
marvelous light (1 Pet. 2:9)
Holiness empowers the message we deliver. People will believe
because our lives are in accordance to our message. Beside that,
holiness gives us a pure conscience that will give us the courage to
testify about Christ.

The Man Who Cleaned the Spring

(Narration:)
There was a man who worked as a water cleaner, who lived in a village on the Austrian mountain,
on the Alps slope. This old man had worked for years in a city not far from that village, where the
river passed through. His job was to clean the spring from all kinds of dirt, leaves, and tree
branches. Every day he patrolled up and down the mountain, along the spring. That clean river
became an interesting tourist attraction for those who like the fresh scenery in that cool slope.
Various restaurants and business sites were built along that river. Year by year passed, one day the
government of the city had a midyear meeting. As they looked through the city budget, one of the
leaders saw the salary paid to this spring cleaner year by year. Who is this old man? Why do we
pay him year by year? What does he do? None of us has ever seen him anyway; we do not need
him any longer. Finally, based on the boards agreement, this old man was fired from his job. For
the first few weeks nothing changed. However, when fall came, leaves began to fall, small
branches fell into the water. One afternoon, somebody saw something brownish floated on the
river. A few days later, the water of that river turned darker. The following week, a layer of oil
covered the surface of the river and it began to smell. The geese disappeared, tourists no longer
came. Slowly but sure, the business built along the river began to close down. Diseases spread all
over the city because the water had been contaminated. Soon, the city government arranged a
meeting. They have come to realize their mistake and therefore they called the old man back to
work. In a few weeks, the river became clear and life began to flow back into that river, attracting
the tourists and businessmen to cheer the city again (from Improving Your Serve oleh Charles
Swindoll. Word, 1961. Page 127-128)
It is the same way with our lives. The purity of the spring determines our lives. Guarding our
holiness is not a choice but a necessity, because it will determine the future of our faith: life or
death, to see or not to see God.

The Postmans Service

(Narration:)
A postmans service is not only to deliver letters but he could also stop a robbery attempt. An example
of this happened to a resident on Rajawali Street, Perumnas Cirebon, West Java. At that moment, 3
robbers broke into a house and tied the maid. While these three burglars were in action, a postman came
to deliver mails. Since it was an express letter that needed the recipients signature, the postman
knocked on the door. Although the door remained closed after a long time, the postman kept on
knocking because he heard a noise in the house. Then came out a man to sign the receipt. Without any
suspicion, the postman handed over the letter and it was signed by one of the robbers. Apparently, after
the postman left, the robbers panicked. They were worried that the postman find out about the robbery
and reported it to the local police or residents. Their panic increased as it appeared outside the house the
crowd had begun to gather. Without taking one single thing from that house, the robbers quickly ran out
of the house shouting to the crowd, The robbers escaped through the back door ! and got into a car
that was waiting for them, and ran away. The crowd was confused upon hearing the shout. Their
confusion found its answer as the maid ran out of the house shouting, Robberyrobbery!
Unfortunately, the robbers have already escaped. It was found out later that the crowd surrounding the
house were actually people who were waiting for the public transportation which by chance passed by
the house where the robbers were (Kompas, 26 April 1998)

take you to look at your conscience and to cleanse it from all accusations. Only with a pure conscience you

I.

Your Conscience Is In You.

(Narration:)
In a survey in 1977 over 52,000 people, it was discovered that 40% of them were often
overwhelmed by a deep guilt. This showed the greatest need of man, which is forgiveness and
freedom from guilt which Christ offered.
In the beginning, Adam and Eve lived closely to God. Until one day they broke His
commandments by eating the fruit of the tree of good and evil that God had forbidden.
Although no one told them anything, a sense of guilt began to appear in their hearts and they
hid from God:
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day,
and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees
of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you? So he
said, I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid
myself. And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of
which I commanded you that you should not eat? (Genesis 3:8-11)

Every man was born with a conscience, that is a sense of right and wrong from inside the
heart

The word conscience is originated in Latin conscientia. Con means with or together,
while scire means to know, so it means knowing together. In Old Testament, conscience
was often interpreted as heart (1 Samuel 24:5, Job 27:6), while in New Testament it is
suneidesis, which means seeing together. Knowing or seeing together with who? The
answer is: knowing or seeing together with God, agreeing with God. So, to be free from the
accusation in ones conscience that bring guilt, one must live in accordance to God.

A. What Does Your Conscience Do?

(Narration:)
1. Convicts a person of his/her sin
And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by
one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the
woman standing in the midst. (John 8:9)
2. Gives a testimony of what is right, even if that person is ignorant of Gods law.
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things contained in
the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the
work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and
between themselves their thoughts accusing of else accusing them (Romans 2:1415)
3. Moves a person to live by sincerity and purity of God.
For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted
ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but
by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you (2 Corinthians 1:12)
4. Moves a person to follow his conscience

Renouncing shameful acts

Not acting tricky
Not falsifying the Word of God
But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor
handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending
ourselves to every mans conscience in the sight of God (2 Corinthians 4:2)

(OHP : D1.101)
B. Some Facts On Our Conscience.

(Narration:)
1. When someone was born, his conscience has the tendency as it has been established
according to Gods ideal pattern.
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things contained in the law,
these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law
written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their
thoughts accusing of else accusing them (Rom. 2:14-15)

2. As that person grows older, his parents, environment, and culture, might teach him
norms different to Gods ideal pattern.

Since a persons values/norms are also affected by religion, culture, and the family
where he grew up, his conscience then is also affected by these things.
Some teaches low standard. For example: Cheating is alright, As long as yo
love each other, its no problem living together before marriage, etc.
Some teaches high standard. For example: a girl growing up in a strict religious
home may have some discomfort in her conscience when putting make up or
wearing mini skirt.
Therefore comes a sense of condemnation/false guilt if that person feels that he has
broken the norms that he believes as truth.

However, there is still the eternal law of God that crafted in the deepest part of the
hearts of man. For that, man needs to adjust their values/norms to Gods ideal
standard.

3. Every person must live with a pure conscience before God and man.
Then Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived
in all good conscience before God until this day" (Acts 23:1)
This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward
God and men (Acts 24:16)

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

4. Our conscience can become weak.

But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you
sin against Christ (1 Corinthians 8:12)
5.

Our conscience can be seared (when we follow God or the devil) or rejected causing a
shipwreck in our faith.
Having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the
faith have suffered shipwreck (1 Timothy 1:19)
speaking lie of hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron (1
Timothy 4:2)

(OHP : D1.102)
6. Do not do things that will trespass others conscience.
But if anyone says to you, This was offered to idols, do not eat it for the sake of
the one who told you, and for conscience sake; for The earth is the Lord, and all
its fullness. Conscience, I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my
liberty judged by another mans conscience (1 Corinthians 10:28-29)
7. Both conscience and thought become impure (defiled) because of uncleanness and
unbelief.
To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving
nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled (Titus 1:15)
8. Following the Law and religious activities cannot bring our conscience to perfection.
It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered
which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the
conscience concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly
ordinance imposed until the time of reformation (Hebrews 9:9-10)
9. Search for the pure conscience from God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
There is also an antitype which now saves us, namely baptism (not the removal of
the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:21)

II.
Throw Your Anchor Deep, or Your Ship Wrecks!

(Narration:)
Every human being was born with a conscience yet his values are determined by his lifestyle. So, a
healthy and pure conscience grows through living a righteous and holy life before God, while an impure
and a wicked conscience grows through living an unholy and worldly lifestyle.

A. The Power of Pure Conscience.

A pure conscience is a requirement for every believer, as Paul exhorted:
This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men (Acts
24:16)

Some benefits of having a pure conscience:

1. Pure conscience gives us the courage to testify.
A girls said that she felt incapable and was not brave enough to testify about Christ. When she was
asked the reason, she admitted that she once cheated in class and she was worried that if she
testified, people would say, You are a hypocrite! Pure conscience gives us the courage to witness.
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a
reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame
you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed (1 Peter 3:15-16)

2. Pure conscience gives us the courage to end the conflict.

If someone lives with pure conscience, he can freely come to his co-worker or family if a conflict
arises among them, because he knows that he comes with a pure motivation and a right heart to end
the conflict.
3. Pure conscience gives us the opportunity to build good friendships.
Although Saul, Jonathans father chased David to kill him, David did not keep any revenge against
both Saul and Jonathan, thus he could continue to build his friendship with Jonathan (1 Samuel
18:1-3) and treated Saul respectfully as Gods anointed.
4. Pure conscience gives us the strength to overcome temptations.
Job went through a great suffering. He lost all his sons and wealth, suffered a painful skin disease,
even his wife mocked him. His friends tried to convince Job that everything happened because of
his sins (Job 22:5). Yet, Job could overcome that trial strong because he knew that he was
innocenct. Such conviction caused him to believe that God was on his side and he won:
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed,
this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not
another. How my heart yearns within me! (Job 19:25-27)

5. Pure conscience is a vital weapon.

Beside faith, pure conscience will give certain strength to fight a good fight in life and ministry:
This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that
by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience (1 Timothy 1:18-19)

Journey of a Sure Change

B. Crucial Results of Impure Conscience

(Narration:)
Conscience, said an Indian, is like a triangle in my heart that will stand properly on its ground if I am
good, but if I am evil, the triangle will turn upside down and stand on its pinnacle that the sharp edge will
hurt me. However, if I keep doing evil things, the edge will soon become dull and it will not hurt me
anymore.
That is the picture if someone breaks his own conscience. If a person did what was wrong yet did not ask
for forgiveness and change his behavior, these things will happen:
1. His faith wrecks
This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that
by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected,
concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck (1 Timothy 1:18-19)

Samson was Gods anointed and appointed prophet. From his childhood he had a tremendous
strength but because he continually trespassing his own conscience he married a foreign woman,
held up a dead animal carcass and was playing around with his wife by telling her the secret of his
strength. Eventually, Samson was trapped by his own carelessness and his faith wrecked. He was
captured by the Philistines powerlessly, his eyes were picked and he was enslaved for their fun and
pleasure (Judges 15-16). Those who continuously rejecting their conscience are indeed standing on
the edge of destruction.
2. His heart becomes hardened
The heart of those who rejected God will grow hard that they lose the ability to hear what is right and thus
do as they please. Just like Pharaoh, who refused to hear the words Moses brought:
And Pharaohs heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said (Exodus 7:13)

3. Rebellious
Some people refuse to listen to their conscience; they even purposely rebel, and as time goes on their lives
were getting more lost. Saul was one example: he offered up the offering which only a prophet could
perform. Then, he ran after an innocent man to kill him (David). Finally, he openly went to a medium at
En-Dor.
4. Carrying the sense of guilt that can result in depression, mental problems and even suicide.
The tax department received a letter from a man, explaining that he had not had good sleep since 1970
because he had been lying about his income. Through this letter, I attach $100. If I still cannot sleep well, I
will send you the rest
Breaking ones conscience can result in guilt that will cause that person to feel as if he deserves to be
punished. Those who keep their guilt tend to be involved in drinking and drug addiction. Mentally, they can
show obsessive compulsive, panic behavior and depression. This sometimes drives that person to act
extremely. For example, because of his guilt, Judas hanged himself, although forgiveness had been made
available for those who repent.

Seven Steps to Pure Heart

(Narration:)
Now that we know the importance of having pure heart, below are seven steps to have a pure heart:
1. Believe in

BREAKTHROUGH

Breakthrough begins from a commitment to live in honesty and

integrity in all things:
Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing
to live honestly. (Hebrews 13:18) -- live in honesty

And from good conduct in Christ

Having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who
revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed (1 Peter 3:16)

2. Begin to FOCUS

Focus on His blood.

Believe that the blood of Jesus cleanses our conscience:
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead
works to serve the living God? (Hebrews 9:14)
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of
Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the
veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let
us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts
sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water
(Hebrews 10:19-22)

Focus on building a clean and healthy conscience:

1. By obeying the government:
Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for
conscience sake (Romans 13:5)

2. Born out of genuine love and faith:

Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a
good conscience, and from sincere faith, good conscience, and from sincere
faith (1 Timothy 1:5)

3. Holding onto faith and a pure conscience:

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies
previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good
warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected,
concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck (1 Timothy 1:18-19)

4. Is built when a person suffers for Christ:

For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one
endures grief, suffering wrongfully (1 Peters 2:19), or:
For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief,
suffering wrongfully. (1 Peter 2:19)

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

No one is too deaf to listen to the alarm of his conscience. Turn off
your alarm, and it will trouble you forever.

3. Get a REVELATION

As we know, there are two kinds of convictions in our conscience:

The right conviction (because s/he did break Gods law) and
The false conviction (because s/he feels that s/he has broken the
law because of the religious norms and culture)
Impure heart that comes out of both right and false conviction will
eventually destroy that persons life. Therefore, we must get rid of it:
Find a revelation,
1. Is there still any conviction in your conscience?
2. Why does your conscience convict you?
3. Is that conviction true or false?
A. Free yourself from the true guilt:

Confess your sin before God and repent/change.

Receive forgiveness from God:
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)

Right belief/
sin
NO MORE
Value
+ FORGIVEN = guilt
B. Free yourself from the false guilt:

Change your perspective according to the Word of God.

Do not allow yourself to be overtaken by guilt.
Delete the old records.
happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves
(Romans 14:22)

Wrong beliefs/
Values

NO
+ transgression

NO
guilt

DELETED

C. Free yourself from uncertain guilt:

If you are not sure whether this sense of guilt comes from
trespassing the true/false values:
Face it and deal with the areas you recognize as true or false guilt.
Pray and study the Bible.
Ask for counsel from someone who knows the Word of God.
If you are still uncertain, itd better to consider this guilt as a true
guilt and do not intrude your conscience. If you do, your conscience
will convict and condemn you:
But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat
from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin (Romans 14:23)

Journey of a Sure Change

Worship and ministry sharpen dull conscience.

4. Get into

WORSHIP

Worship and ministry unto God will build a pure and healthy
conscience:
I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did;
as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day
(2 Timothy 1:3)

LOVE and GRACE

Look through a telescope, not a microscope.

5. Speak

PROPHETICALLY

Believe that God sees you through His LOVE and GRACE telescope.
You are not under a microscope where you are being searched for what
you are guilty of. God wants you to live in peace and joy, free from
conviction. Speak about Gods love and grace to yourself:
For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more
(Jeremiah 31:34)
The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in
mercy (Psalm 145:8)
As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions
from us (Psalm 103:12)

A pure conscience is a candidate for miracles.

6.

MIRACLES belong to
you.

When Zacchaeus had a pure conscience, the miracle of

salvation happened to Zacchaeus household:
Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Look, Lord, I give half of
my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false
accusation, I restore fourfold (Luke 19:8)

7.

Moses served God with a pure conscience, that was why God
performed miracle by miracle through Moses life.
Look behind, and you will find guilt.
Look up, and you will find grace and forgiveness.
Look ahead, and you will find prosperity!

PROSPERITY the
road to freedom.

Because Job remained pure in heart, he was able to stand strong in

the midst of his trial and God prospered him with such great
blessings:
Now the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; for
he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke
of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. He also had seven sons and
three daughters Job 42:12

Paul kept his pure conscience in ministry and his ministry was
blessed. Two third of the New Testament was written by Paul, new
churches were born in Asia, new leaders were born out of Pauls
ministry.
I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers
did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers day and night (2
Timothy 1:3)

Never Too Late

(Narration:)
One day I recalled an incident while I was in high school.
I grew up in a small town in Iowa, America. There was a
policeman in our town whom none of us, the high
schoolers, liked. One night, two of my best friends and I
decided to pick on Mr. Brown. There was a big water
barrel in the center of the town and we wrote Mr. Brown
*&#!.. (cussing words) with red paint on that barrel. The
next morning, all the people woke up and read that
writing. In two hours, the three of us were called to his
office. Two of my friends admitted their crime but I lied
and nobody knew.
About 20 years later, in a communication class, we were told to write things that made us feel
guilty, ashamed of, sorry for, or things we have not finished. Mr. Browns name was on my list.
I did not know whether he was alive. Last Sunday, I called my hometown to find out about him
and apparently, the name Roger Brown was still listed on the yellow pages. I dialed the
number. After ringing a few times, I heard the voice, Hello? I said, Mr. Brown? Yes, he
replied. Im Jimmy Calkins. I want to tell you that I did it. He was quiet for a few moments
and then replied with a little shout I knew it! Both of us laughed and spoke warmly about a lot
of things. Before he hung up the phone, his last words were, Jimmy, I have always felt sorry
for you, because your friends have been relieved for years while I know youve been carrying
this burden all yourself for years. I want to thank you for making this call today for YOUR
OWN SAKE!
Our conscience is a very invaluable treasure. There is a saying, a pure conscience is a soft pillow.
Guard your faith to Christ as if guarding a diamond and do what know is true. Each time you
ignore the voice of your conscience, your heart will become hard, and soon you will lose the ability
to recognize what is right and wrong. When you walk with God, He will speak to you through your
conscience. Make sure that you have a pure conscience, and you will live in the true freedom.
A lot of changes have taken place in you for the past 10 weeks a foundation for success for your life has
been established. However, do not forget to join the Journey of a Sure Change retreat that will take you

About the Plant and the Trees

(OHP : D1.108)

I was born and grew up in California, where the seasons are not too significantly different from one
season to another. Then, our family moved to Central America where there are four seasons: winter,
spring, summer, fall. Gardening is my hobby, so when we moved out, I went to the local greenhouse
and bought some tress, flowers, and other plants. Some plants grew well but many died. I bought the
same plants again and I took care of them very carefully, yet it brought no result. The plants still could
not grow. Confused, I showed my dead plants to my neighbor. My neighbor said, These plants
cannot grow here! Really? I replied, thinking. She began to explain, These plants need direct
sunlight. Have you ever noticed that the sun never shines in this part of your garden? You need to plant
them where they can get direct sunlight. I tried my neighbors advice and it did work. It seemed
simple yet every plant has its own characteristics. Some need direct sunlight, some will actually die if
it gets direct sunlight. Some need plenty of water but some could not take too much water and will
soon die. I simply need to find the right place for each plant. It wasnt the plants faults, neither were
they bad plants they simply needed the right place (from What You Do Best in the Body of Christ by
Bruce Bugbee, Zondervan 1995)
Like certain plants, some Christians are not fruitful; the reason might be that they are in the wrong
place. Are you in the right place so that you can grow as effective as possible? There might be
nothing wrong with the plant (you), you simply need to find your position in the Body of Christ so
that you can participate and bring a great impact for others. In this class you will learn to recognize
more of yourself, searching for the treasure that God has put inside you so that you can succeed in
your life.

Gods Treasure For You

(OHP : D1.109)

In the history of the men and women in the Bible, God gave them spiritual gifts to fulfill the call
of God in their lives. To David, God gave the gift to lead. To Isaiah, God gave the gift to
prophesy, while to Otniel and Deborah, God gave the gift to lead with wisdom as the judges of
Israel. To Paul, He gave him the gift to teach and to exhort. They were all called by God to fulfill
His specific assignment.
God also has a specific assignment and call for your life, which is the call to be His partner in
building His Kingdom on this earth, reaching souls for Him, including healing the sick,
performing miracles and signs and wonders. Only by doing the will of God that you will have a
life that is full of joy, peace, and true satisfaction.
For this reason, God through His Holy Spirit gave you the tools needed to build the world
together with Him, which are the spiritual gifts:
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were
Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you
that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord
except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are
differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same
God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through
the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit, 10
to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another
different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit
works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:1-11)

In Pauls epistle, he wrote that we may know the truth about spiritual gifts and not be ignorant. In
your life, God has given you treasures you need to dig, which are the spiritual gifts.
Spiritual gift is:
The skill, ability, and unction that God gives through His Holy Spirit to every Christian,
according to His gift to equip us to reach the supernatural goals from God and to serve the
community.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

1. Spiritual gifts are given more than one, according to the will of God.
The Greek word for spiritual gift is charisma or charismata, from the root word charis
which is gift. There is a close relationship between spiritual gifts and Gods grace. Therefore,
spiritual gifts are given according to Gods grace or how much He is willing to give it to us:
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He
wills (1 Corinthians 12:11)

God gives every Christian spiritual gifts and each person usually has more than one gift.
Some of the gifts are outstanding and some others serves as complement.

2. Spiritual gifts vs. the believers role

Spiritual gifts must be separated from believers role. Although you might not have the gift to
evangelize yet every Christian is called to preach the Gospel. Although you might not have
the gift to heal others, every person needs to pray for the sick to be healed.

II.

The Key to Success Finding Your Treasure and Using Them for
Gods Glory.
(OHP : D1.110)

Who does not want to get treasure? Who does not want to search for the treasure in his life. The
key to success is now in your hand; you simply need to dig for your treasure, recognizing the
spiritual gifts that God has put in your life.
1. Those who recognize Gods spiritual gifts and will in their lives are those who are
strong, courageous and motivated.
When Queen Victoria was a little girl, she did not know that she was in the lineage of British
royal family. Her teacher was frustrated because he tried so hard to prepare this little girl for
her future but apparently no one could motivate her. She did not study seriously. Eventually,
the teacher decided to tell her that one day she would be the queen of England. After hearing
this, that little girl said slowly, I will be a good girl then. When this little girl realized that
she inherited a very high call to be the queen of England, she was motivated and had a high
sense of responsibility to change her lifestyle.

Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

When you realize that there is a higher call that God has given you, you will then become a
very motivated, courageous, strong, and relentless person.
Another example is Joseph. He had a dream that his brothers sheaves bowed down to his
sheaves, and the sun, moon and the eleven stars bowed down to him. Joseph held onto this
dream which was the revelation of Gods call for his life. When he was in the well, he
sustained and did not lose hope because he thought he would not be in that well forever. One
day, the sun, moon and stars would bow down to him. Likewise, when he was imprisoned
because of his bosss wifes slander. He continued to believe that one day the sheaves
would bow down to his sheaves. Because Joseph held onto the call of God for his life, he
could overcome and did not give up. He remained faithful to God because he could see Gods
call in his life.

Faith and courage grow in the heart of

those who fulfill Gods call in their lives.

2. The world is waiting for you.

A sailorman worked in a lighthouse. His job was to turn on the lighthouse every evening so
that the ships could find their way to the harbor safely. One night when he was on duty,
somebody knocked on his door. Apparently, it was his neighbor. Can I have a little bit of
your oil, because I forgot to buy the oil and now Im running out of oil. My child is crying
because he is afraid of darkness, said his neighbor. The sailorman gave his oil to the
neighbor. Not long afterwards, he heard another knock. This time, the chief of the
neighbourhood came for a little oil because a guest unexpectedly visited him and he did not
have extra oil. The sailorman immediately gave his oil. So people came a few times to ask for
his oil that night and the sailorman gave it to them generously. The night grew darker, the
moon hid its face that night. Suddenly, the light in the lighthouse was off because it ran out of
oil. Ships that were going to dock panicked and began to hit one another.
The sailorman might think that he did what was good for his neighbor, yet he missed to
understand the purpose of the lighthouse itself. He failed to fulfill the purpose and the loss
was thousands of dollars and many casualties.
The world is waiting for you. You have an important role in this world. The world needs
your spiritual gifts, because more or less their wellness is in your hand.

Can someone choose his assignment?

No one can choose where he will be born or who his parents will be
(George Eliot)

3. You are responsible for Gods investment in your life.

God has invested extraordinary abilities, great creativity and unlimited potentials in your life.
God values your life in such a way that He was willing to risk His only begotten Son to die on
the Cross for you. Is it wrong for Him to expect that His investment will not be in vain but
will produce a good result?
Journey of a Sure Change

Teachers Manual

The parable of the talents explains about this. A master who was going to travel overseas
called his servants and entrusted them with his treasure. To the first servant he gave one
talent, to the second two, and to the other five, according to each ones capability. When the
master returned, the servant with 2 talents made 4 talents, the servant with 5 talents made 10
talents. The master said to them:
Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you
ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord (Mathew 25:23)

When the servant with 1 talent did nothing with the treasure that was entrusted to him, he
buried that talent in the ground and returned the 1 talent to his master. What did his master
say?
You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I
have not scattered seed. Therefore you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at
my coming I would have received back with my own interest. Therefore take the talent from him,
and give it to him who has ten talents. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness.
There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth"(Matthew 25: 26-30)

God has invested in you an incredible ability,

great creativity and unlimited potential.

Dr. James Dobson once wrote, If you live long enough, you will see that life will throw away
your trophies. No matter how important it is to you, time will make the trophies rusty. Who
cares if Zachary Taylor or William Henry Harrion won the vote for the US President? Would it
make any different if Broklyn Dodgers beated Yankee at the world championship in 1955?
Would anybody care about John Gilbert who became a famous actor and one of the most
expensive movie stars in Hollywood in 1920? He died in 1936 from drinking and drugs and he
was just 36. So The world will forget about your success, even the kinds of success that might
seem great, will lose its value as time goes by. It does not mean that you do not need to succeed,
but you need to ask a question, why are those things important to me? Are those trophies for my
life or for? You will achieve true success if you win eternal trophies for God.

Giving:
Do you have enough money to cover all the hospital bill?
Administration: Do not worry about anything; I have delegated your work to four people in
the office.
Mercy:
Im sad when I heard that you are sick. The office is quiet without you. How
are you doing now??

IV.

Finding Your Spiritual Gift

Now that we have come to understand the importance of knowing your spiritual gifts, below are
the steps to recognize your spiritual gifts:
(OHP : D1.112)

1. OBSERVING YOUR FEELING

What is the deepest desire in your heart?

What excites you?
Excitement, a fire, passion, and joy that causes us to do something. What are the things that
are important to you, that fires your excitement and passion? From the beginning, Moses
desired to deliver the people of Israel, which was why he killed an Egyptian to defend an
Israelite. A n evangelist is moved by compassion and has a great passion each time he sees the
souls that need to be reaped. Others may have the desire to make an office that is effectively
run. Some others have the desire to bring forth and live out the truth. What moves your
heart? What is your deepest desire? There should be no more conflict between enjoying what
we do and fulfilling Gods call in our lives.

2. EVALUATING YOUR EFFECTIVENESS.

What are the things that naturally come out of your life?
What are the things that you do and give out a good result?
God gives you spiritual gifts so that you can accomplish something for Him. The call
of God in you is also a natural thing. Did you ever realize that there are certain things
that you can easily do, as if they were flowing out of you? God gives you talents and
grace so that you can do what you have to do easily and naturally. Just like hand could
easily pick up a thing, or feet to walk, likewise every part of the Body of Christ has
been given the grace to fulfill the task that they can do easily and will bring result. If
you have the gift of an evangelist, people will come to Christ constantly through your
ministry. If you have the gift to counsel, you will help others go through their
problems and you will see their lives straightened again. If you have the gift of
administration, your organization/office will be able to run well.
3. RECEIVE CONFIRMATION FROM OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BODY OF
CHRIST

What does your spiritual leader say?

What does the people in the church say?
You do not need to be alone God has given you parents, friends and spiritual
authorities at church to help you find your gifts and do His will. What you feel might
not be accurate but the other Body of Christ will confirm you of your spiritual gifts.
The spiritual gifts that God gave us is to build the Body of Christ, therefore the other
members of the Body will experience the benefit once you exercise your gift and give
confirmation. For example, if you feel moved to give counsel but yet after exercising
this for years only a number of people who came to you for counsel, that means what
you feel about the gift of counsel may be wrong. If you were given a task to organize
a seminar and it goes successfully, then you were entrusted to organize other events, it
might be that the gift of administration is your gift.
in the multitude of counselors there is safety (Proverbs 11:14)

4. LOOK AT ALL THE POSSIBILITIES AND EXERCISE THEM

Read the Word of God and books on spiritual gifts. Try different kinds of ministry to
exercise your spiritual gifts. Find the needs of those around you and the needs of your
church. Find a place where you are needed and meet that need.

Exercising The Spiritual Gifts With The Fruits of the Spirit

(OHP : D1.113)

If you read thoroughly, after 1 Corinthians 12 speaks about various spiritual gifts,
then 1 Corinthians 13 follows with speaking about love. Love is the foundation of
everything that we do with our spiritual gifts. If we are not careful, there is a
tendency that someone with his spiritual gifts might consider his gifts more important
and thus felt needed more than others. For this reason Paul wrote about love. Love
becomes the glue for the Body of Christ with different gifts, so that the gifts will not
be misused or manipulated for personal use.
If the worlds idea is to compete (to compete with each other to defeat), Gods idea is
to complement (to complete each other). The Word of God reminds us that the people
of God is like a human body. The Holy Spirit intertwined us to be one in the Body of
Christ. Our differences are not divisive but to put us in a dependency to one another.
Every part is valuable to God and is needed by the other parts of the Body.
Beside love, there are the fruits of the Spirit that need to be manifested in the lives of
each believer:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And
those who are Christs have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If
we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-25)

To exercise your spiritual gifts effectively, you need to have the fruits of the Spirit:
Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

Different from the spiritual gifts that are given by the Holy Spirit, these fruits of the
Spirit are the characters we need to build in our lives through our response towards
our daily occurrence and lives.

VII. Exercising Your Spiritual Gifts in IFGFGISI

After you found out your spiritual gifts, you would of course want to exercise them. In
this session, you will meet your I Care Leader to discuss how you can develop your
potentials effectively through the ministry in each satellite church.

As the closing of this session, there is a story

The Songs of the Birds

(OHP : D1.115)

A man found an eagle egg and put it in the chickens barn. Soon, the egg broke together with the
chickens eggs and so the eagle grew up with the chickens. All his life, this young eagle did what
the young chickens did, thinking that he is one of them. It started to look for worms and bugs in
the way as the chicken. It flapped its wings like the chickens and only flew a few centimeters
above ground. Year after year and this eagle grew old. One day he saw a great bird flying
beautifully in the clear sky. This bird gracefully flew through strong wind and stretched out its
wings. This old eagle looked up and asked, Who is that?. His neighbour said, Well, its an
eagle, king of all birds. It lives in the sky, we live on earth we are only chickens. So, this old
eagle lived and died as chicken, because all its life, it thought itself as a chicken.

Many Christians live like this old eagle. They live from scratching the ground, looking for
worms to eat and cannot soar because they do not know that they are actually eagles, the king
of the sky. They live for the lower purpose than what God has set for them. Do not be content
to live as a chicken; find out and do the call of God in your life, use the spiritual gifts He has
give you to do supernatural things, and win the world with God.
