2 Kings 17 Summary
King Hoshea of Israel rebelled against Assyria. Israel was supposed to pay tribute to Assyria. However,
King Hoshea decided to rebel against Assyria by seeking help from King So of Egypt. When King
Shalmaneser of Assyria found out about it, he laid siege to Samaria for 3 years. He imprisoned King
Hoshea and deported the Israelites to Assyria. The Israelites settled in Halah, Gozan on the Harbor
River and the towns of Medes. King Hoshea was the last king of Israel.
All these happen because the Israelites sinned against God by worshiping idols. It was Jeroboam, son of
Nebat that set up two golden calves at Dan and Bethel and introduced them to the people as god. The
king of Assyria relocated people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hammath and Sepharvaim to settle in
Samaria. The people did not worship God after relocating to Samaria so God sent lions to kill them.
When this happen, a report came to the king of Assyria that the people dont know the requirement of
the god of Samaria so he is sending lions to kill them off. Then, the king of Assyria commanded that one
of the priests exiled from Samaria return to teach the people how to worship God. The priest stayed at
Bethel and taught the people how to worship God.
However, the people worship God and other pagan gods as well. Each group of people made their own
god. The people from Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men from Cuth made Nergal, the men
from Hamath made Ashima, the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their
children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech (2 Kings 17:30-31 KJV). The hired their own people to
be priests at the shrines in the high places. The descendants of these people did the same. They
worshiped God and idols together.

2 Kings 17 Bible Study

1. Rely on God
King Hoshea of Israel did not seek Gods help. Instead, he turned to King So of Egypt to free him from
the dominion of Assyria. When we face problem, we should surrender it to God by telling it to him in
prayer. God will not take care of your needs if you dont tell him what you need. God want us to ask
him before he will give it to us. You can hold on to the promises of God in the bible when you face a
problem. Proverbs 3:5 states that we should trust God and never depend on our own understanding. 1
Peter 5:7 states that we should cast all our anxieties on him because God cares for you. 2 Corinthians
4:16-18 states that God put problems in our lives to prepare us so that we will become stronger in
Christ. God is our everlasting rock so we should put our trust in him (Isaiah 26:4). In Jeremiah 17:5-9,
blessed is the man who trust God and cursed are those who trust in men. The Holy Spirit can help us in

our problems by guiding us and telling us what to do in times of troubles. The Holy Spirit gives life
(John 6:63). When you trust in God to lift you up out of your problem, he will meet all your needs
(Philippians 4:19). We should seek Gods kingdom first by doing his will and commandments so that all
things else will be added unto us (Matthew 6:33).

2. The sin of idolatry

It is the sin of idolatry that caused the kingdom of Israel to come to an end. God had sent many
prophets to warn them but they did not listen. In Exodus 20:4-6, God forbids bowing down or
worshiping idols. God said he will punish the sinners up to the 4 th generation but bless the faithful up to
a thousand of generations. Christians cannot keep any idol, photo of idol, photo of temple, charms, or
have anything to do with idolatry even if they do not believe in the pagan religion (Galatians 5:19-20).
This is because doing so will open doorway to the devil and give him a foothold in our lives (Ephesians
4:27). We must not conform to the standards of the world but surrender ourselves completely to God
(Romans 12:2).
