Issuing orders and transport procedures

All transport activities, including delivery into the RF room, should be performed by a licensed carrier
only.

Transport of the magnet or any other heavy components by SIEMENS employees is prohibited.

Transport routes

Before issuing orders to the carrier, the project manager and the architect/construction engineer must
determine the weight capacity of the floor along the transport route and in the temporary storage
areas. The architect/construction engineer must certify in writing that the route can withstand the
expected load.

It is the responsibility of the carrier to obtain information concerning the various transport routes
before the actual transport. Copies of the transport plans and certification must be provided by the
carrier upon receipt of the order.

Issuing the order

The order for transport by a licensed carrier must be issued in writing. In addition to general
information (e.g., a list of parts, etc.), the order must contain the following data and documentation:

Copies of plans for the transport route/temporary storage areas.

Copy of the certification regarding the weight capacity of the floor.
Final destination of transport.
(It is recommended that the carrier obtain information concerning the transport route before the actual
transport).

Installation of the RF-room

Read this first

2-1
2

Most of the modular RF-rooms used in Germany and Europe are manufactured by Siemens Matsushita GmbH & Co. KG in Heidenheim and installed by a team of Simon Hegele employees. In view of Siemens Med minimal involvement in these areas and the separate, detailed documentation available on
the subject, we are only providing General Notes for the RF-room installation.

NOTICE

When using other RF-rooms (e.g. copper or aluminium-clad RF-rooms, etc.)

outside of Germany or Europe, manufacturers specifications and installation
instructions should be used.

However, you can always contact Siemens Med, TD MR 7, in Erlangen, if you have questions regarding the installation of the RF-room. The telephone numbers to call are ..-9131-84-3791 or 6201.

Safety

The following should be worn during the installation of the RF-room:

Protective gloves (made from leather)

Safety shoes
Safety helmet
Safety glasses

2-2

Installation of the RF-room

General Notes

The RF-room and floor have to be completed before the magnet arrives at the site. Ensure that the
opening in the RF-room wall allows for easy transportation of the magnet into the room.

The floor has to be level (including the grouting, etc.)

It is recommended to start the installation of the first side panel at the corner located opposite the RFroom door.

The contact surfaces of the RF-gaskets (used with particular designs) should be free of grease.
The nuts should be tightened with the torque specified by the manufacturer.
The RF-integrity of the RF-room must be measured (attenuation 90 dB).
The door contacts cannot be damaged.
The protocols must be filled out and filed with the other protocols (register 9 of the system manual).

NOTICE

The spectroscopy retrofit requires a second filter plate which includes the RF
wave guides for the gradient cables.
Depending on the location of the second filter plate, the gradient cables may
not be long enough. For this reason install the second filter plate in a way,
which allows you to reuse the gradient cables.

CAUTION

MAGNETOM
Planning & Installation

Dont forget the RF-gaskets while installing the filter plate for the copper-clad
or steel-clad RF-room.

Additional information

NOTICE

Depending on the space available and the layout of the facilities, the cabinets
may have to be moved into the computer room before transporting the patient
table, magnet cover, and magnet into the MR suite.
Refer to the examples on the next two pages for further details.
The order of bringing in the system components depends on the location of
the opening for magnet transport plus the space available for magnet positioning.

Moving the magnet into the room (through the front)

If there is very little room between the sides of the magnet and the wall, move in the rear magnet
covers before positioning the magnet on its location.

Final position of the

rear magnet cover
frame

It is not possible to install the rear covers

Safety instructions

Always wear safety shoes and protective clothing

Never stand under heavy loads
Rope off the unloading zone (take into consideration detours or other traffic regulations)
Use only tools which are in good working condition

CAUTION

NOTICE

To ensure maximum safety for the personnel and the system, the chains,
straps, or other lifting devices, as well as the hydraulic lifts and the steel rollers must be in good working condition.

Read through this chapter carefully. It lists all the items/steps that should
have been completed or prepared before the magnet arrives at the site.

Installation Prerequisites

Transport Requirements

Ensure that the magnet room is ready and the RF-shielding is installed.
Ensure that the opening to the RF-room is large enough (refer to the Planning Guide).
Verify dimensions of the RF-room opening (height, width; refer to the Planning Guide).
Provide temporary storage for the magnet with sufficient floor load capacity
(refer to the Planning Guide).

Ensure sufficient space for magnet installation (refer to the Planning Guide).
Take into account obstructions due to dropped ceilings, support beams, and columns.
Determine the final magnet location in the RF-room (refer to the Planning Guide).
Verify that the water for the ACCU has been routed to the final location of the ACCU. In this way you
will be able to quickly connect the compressor. This is an important advantage when the magnet has
been shipped cold, and the cold head has to be connected immediately to reduce the boil-off rate.

Rope off the unloading zone to prevent injury to onlookers.

Avoid blocking emergency or other vital access routes to the hospital.
Stay within traffic regulations. If necessary, get in touch with the hospital administration.
Only a licensed carrier should transport the magnet to the site and into the magnet room.

NOTICE

MAGNETOM
Planning & Installation

The distance of the truck to the unloading zone determines the size and
capacity of the crane.

Sea Ship Kit Removal Instructions

Introduction

If the magnet system has been sea freighted with liquid helium contained in the helium vessels, the
venting system will be equipped with a relief valve and bursting disk, regulating the pressure in the system to 2 bar absolute (see figure below.)
The magnet system can be left safely venting through the relief valve, until depressurizing is required.
When depressurization is required, carefully follow the procedure described below.

Procedure

NOTICE

This procedure should be performed only by trained personnel, wearing protective clothing.

Check that the shut-off valve at the quench valve is in the closed position (handle is at right angles to
the valve axis.)

Remove the VW25KF blank from the end of the shut-off valve and connect the valve to the site
venting.

Ensure that the pipes used are supported and not left to hang on the connections alone. If the site
venting is not installed, run the pipes to atmosphere outside the MR suite.

NOTICE

Helium gas should not be allowed to vent into the MR suite or any other
closed room.

To minimize the amount of helium lost, open the shut-off valve slowly to approximately 15
degrees from the closed position and monitor the pressure gauge.

Helium gas should now be heard escaping. The vent line will cool in a few minutes until it
becomes very cold.

NOTICE

Do not come in contact with cold components. Do not smoke or use open
flames.

When the pressure indicated on the gauge has dropped to 5 psi, the valve opening should be
gradually increased until fully open.

Open the depressurization valve.

NOTICE

The following operations should be performed quickly to prevent air from

entering the system.

Allow the system to depressurize until the vent line has thawed, indicating the system is now at
atmospheric pressure.

Remove the bursting disk assembly from the end of the quench valve and connect the site venting to
the quench valve.

Remove the 30 psia valve assembly and replace it with the stopper rod (baffle assembly) which is
packed in the accessories case.

Replace the 2 bar pressure gauge with the 1/3 psi gauge which is packed in the accessories case.

3 - 25

Proceed with care during the depressurization procedure described on this

page.

Procedure

NOTICE

This procedure should only be carried out by trained personnel, wearing protective clothing.
Ensure DCL Baffle is on hand prior to carrying out this procedure.

Remove the blanking plug (A) from the end of the depressurisation line. There may be a small release
of gas, but there should not be a continuous flow. If there is, cap off the tube and call the Oxford
Service Department, since there may be a fault with the quench valve. Do not proceed further since
this might allow air to enter the system.

Assuming there is no flow refit blank (A) and remove the large blanking flange (B) from the end of the
quench valve and connect the site venting to the quench valve.

NOTICE

Helium gas should not be allowed to vent into the imaging suite or any closed
room.

Open the depressurisation valve (C).

NOTICE

Do not touch the cold parts. Smoking and naked lights are forbidden.

Allow the system to depressurise until the depressurisation line has thawed, indicating that the
system is now at atmospheric pressure.

NOTICE

The following operation should be done quickly to prevent air entering the
system.

Remove the 13 psig valve (F) assembly and and replace it with the current lead baffle assembly
which is packed in the accessories case.

Remove the 16 psia valve (D) from the 1/3 psig valve (E), remove blank (A) from the Tee, connect the
Tee to the 1/3 psig valve and close the depressurisation valve (C). The system will now pressurise to
its normal operating pressure, 1/3 psi.

Pack the remove parts and return them to the Oxford Service Department for re-use.

Determining the temperature

General

The magnet is usually shipped cold. However, the magnet may warm when it is shipped to certain
countries or when it is in transport or storage for an extended period of time.
For that reason, the temperature of the helium vessel should be determined as quickly as possible
after the magnet arrives at the customer site.
The temperature of the helium vessel is measured via the three carbon temperature sensors in the
helium vessel.
If the magnet is still cold, that is, the vessel contains liquid helium, the temperature can be maintained
if you refill the magnet immediately with liquid helium. You will not only save time, you will also save a
great deal of money.
However, should the magnet have warmed, you have to pump down the vacuum and fill it with helium
again.
Refer to the next page for instructions on how to measure the temperature as well as on how to determine the threshold between a warm and a cold magnet.

Place the table guide (with the adjustment bolts already installed) onto the front and rear
table support. Use the M10X20mm allen screws with the large brass washers to fix the
table guide to the supports. Align the table guide as shown in Fig.14 .

In the vertical, the upper platform of the table guide has to be completely flush with the
triangular surface of the funnel. In the x-direction, the table guide has to be positioned
symmetrically to the gradient coil (guide rails). In the z-direction, the front of the table guide
has to lie against the front panel.

Adjust the back panel.

The guide rails define the upper distance from the front panel to the back panel. The exact
position of the back panel is determined by the back funnel. Ensure that the funnel is symmetric with the gradient coil in the x-direction.

Installation of the filter plate

To provide the service engineer with enough room, the RF filter plate together with the RFCC should
not be installed in the immediate vicinity of the magnet. In addition, a more cost-effective cover can be
selected for the RFCC.
In a modular RF-room, the filter plate can be installed directly in the recess provided for that purpose.
In a conventional RF-room the filter plate can be installed directly as well, as long as the RF integrity is
maintained. However, we recommend the use of a filter frame (refer to chapter 3 Components in Register 1 and to chapter 1 'RF-shielding' in Register 4 of this manual).

Install the RF filter plate (56 screws M10).

Installation of ACCU (Air Compressor Chiller Unit)

General Description/Subsystems

The ACCU cabinet is an essential component for the operation of the high performance gradient
system within the MAGNETOM magnetic resonance imaging system. Because of the heavy heat
dissipation of the gradient coil, the currently used air cooling had to be substituted by water cooling. In
addition to the water cooler, the cabinet also contains the helium compressor for the cold head of the
magnet and an air compressor for driving the pneumatic RF switches within the system.

Connecting the water hoses for the gradient coil

Overview/General
The water hoses are connected on top of the ACCU cabinet. They are then routed through the filter
plate and connected to the valves of the gradient coil. A water filter must be integrated into the secondary water circulation system before the GPS. The water cooler for the hoses is located in the center
section of the ACCU cabinet. For the technical data of the water cooler, refer to chapter 4 of Register 4
in this manual.

Control and Supervision

NOTICE

The system has to meet all requirements regarding service and remote diagnostics. This means that all available error messages from the subsystems
have to be transferred to the host computer system.
For the implementation of the supervision concept, a SIEMENS standard
SLAVE D5 SNr.: 8962300 K2079 has to be used to connect the ACCU with the
system control electronics. The messages are transferred via the serial USP
(Universal Serial Protocol) interface.

Install the cable ducts according to the project flowcharts (consult your project manager).

CAUTION

Ensure that the line voltage is switched off at the on-site power distribution
panel (remove fuses, lock switch) before you begin with the cable installation.

Switch the following circuit breakers in the power cabinet in downward (off) position
(F20, F19, F4, F12, F13, F14, F24).

We recommend the following cable installation to avoid spikes

Cabling in the computer room

Keep the line voltage and the protective conductor separate from the signal and control lines.
Route the gradient cables separate from the shim cable.

NOTICE

In case of excess cable:

Do not loop excess cable in circles. Instead, have excess cables meander
(wind) across the floor or ceiling.

Cabling in the magnet room

Route all Oxford cables separate from the signal lines, gradient cables, shim cables and line
voltage cables.

Have excess cable close to the filter plate meander across the ceiling and secure it with
cables ties.

WARNING

Do not wrap excess cable around the magnet or loop it in circles.

Route the gradient cables at a distance of 50 cm from the other cables.

Cabling in the control room

Cable routing

Follow manufacturers instructions when installing fiber optic cables, as well

as RF and gradient cables (bending radius, strain relief, etc.) For further
details, refer to Recommended Room Configurations in chapter 1 of
register 3 of this manual.

NOTICE

Cable numbers

The ends of the cables are identified with the item number, type number, and connector identification
as well as a running cable number. Allocate the cables via the cable number which is identified by a
W (wire) in the circuit diagrams.

Protective Conductor Test

NOTICE

The entire system cabling must be installed, before this test can be performed.

Use the protective conductor meter and measure the ohmic resistance between the protective conductor connection on top of the line power distribution cabinet and an uncoated
metalic part of the:

ACCU
MR electronics cabinet
RFPA
RF-room
Filter plate and RFCC
Magnet OR35
Patient table
RFAS (front panel)
Housing MRC
Housing Monitors 19"and 15" (MRC)
Housing MRSC (if available)
Housing Monitor 19" (MRSC) (if available)
Digital camera

Should the resistance exceed in one instance 200m, test the protective conductor in question
for satisfactory galvanic connection.

If this is not successful for devices with inlet-connectors (for non-heating appliances), an
additional 16mm2 protective conductor should be connected to the respective housing. Do
not disconnect the protective conductor in the line voltage cable.

Installing the magnet covers

Complete the installation of the magnet covers:

CAUTION

Fig. 33 Gradient cable connection magnet side

Check the gradient-bolts Fig.33. They must be attached tight on the gradient
coil! In Oxford the gradient bolts have been tightened with a torqe of 25Nm.
Check if the gradient cables are tight together Fig.33.
Each pair ( X and X, Y and Y, Z and Z ) separately, see Fig.33.
In case of Vision Upgrade, dont forget to use tie wraps to tight the gradient
cables together.
