DECONTAMINATIONCHEMICAL

ProductDescription

HyDeX is a specifically formulated chemical that will eliminate toxic gases and hydrocarbon
vapour during plant turnaround and storage tank decontamination. It is effective across all
temperatureranges.

HyDeX is watersoluble and contains an alcohol ethoxylate based compound with special
enzymes cultured in the complex detergent system. It is effective in removing contaminants
producedbyvarioussystemsinoil/gasproductionandpetrochemicalplants.Itisfastactingand
worksbyconvertinghydrogensulphide,carbondioxide,benzeneandhydrocarbonvapourinto
watersolublecompoundswithverylowChemicalOxygenDemand(COD).

HyDeXisabletobreakdownheavyhydrocarbonsandhydrocarbonscalesintosoftslurry,which
canbeeasilyremoved.Itisparticularlyeffectiveinremovingcontaminantsproducedbyvarious
systemsinoil/gasproductionorpetrochemicalplants.

HyDeX will deactivate pyrophoric materials such as iron sulphide and polymers during
decontaminationprocessthusdramaticallyreducingtheriskpyrophoricoxidationandignitionof
ambienthydrocarbonairmixtures.HyDeXcleansthewallsofavesselandleavesamicroscopic
surfactantfilmpreventingthereleaseofvapourfromanyscalethatmayremain.

Application

HyDeXcanbedilutedwithwaterandcirculated,injectedintoasteamlineforsteamcleaningor
sprayeddirectlyintoavesseltoremovehydrocarbons,H2SandLELs

Steam

The volume of HyDeX required to remove LELs hydrocarbons and H2S during steaming and
decontaminationactivitiesistypicallyfrom1:50to1:250ofsystemvolumewithlargedeposits
ofhydrocarbons.HyDeXdoesnotrequireheattobeeffectiveandonlyusessteamasacarrier
mechanism. This dramatically reduces the time required for decontamination, the volume of
steam required, as well as the volume of waste generated. Please seek advice from No Heat

Circulation

Thedilutionratioisestimatedbasedontheamountandnatureofthesludgeanddebrisinthe
vessel or system that needs to be removed. Simple bench tests should be carried out to
determineoptimalsoakandcirculationstimes.Theratiocanrangefrom1:10to1:25forvessels
with large amounts of heavy sludge. It is recommended to soak the vessel with the diluted
HyDeXforupto24hoursifpossible,tobreakdownthehydrocarbonsbeforecommencingthe
circulation.

Spraying

HyDeXcanbesprayeddirectlyintovesselsacontaminatedvesselanditwillremoveLELsand
H2Sfromtheatmosphere.Itisidealforhydrocarbonspillsasitwillremovehydrocarbonsfrom
theairandemulsifythetoplayerofthehydrocarbonstopreventfurthervaporization,(including
benzene at condensate spills). The reaction of HyDeX and VOCs will create a nonvaporizable
emulsionofwhichismiscibleinwater.

ContinualMonitoring

Duringanycleaningand/ordecontaminationactivityitisrecommendedthatsamplesaretaken
periodicallytodetermine:

Whenthedecontaminationiscomplete
Ifthechemicalhasbeenexhausted
Ifthereareotherfactorsinthesystemthatwerenotanticipated

Changes in colour and viscosity are monitored. pH levels should also be tested to measure
changesinthesystem,particularlywhencleaning/decontaminatingsoursystems.

Whenalltheabovefactorsarestable,thenthereiseithernoadditionalvalueinthechemicalor
thesystemcleaning/decontaminationiscomplete.

During Steamcleaning/decontamination, samples of steam should be taken from the route to

flarelineandtestedforLELs&H2S.OncetheseareatZERO,decontaminationiscompleteand
drainingcancommence.

HyDeX has a very low COD which can be normally treated by most effluent water treatment
facilities.TheemulsionthatiscreatedwithHyDeXandhydrocarbonsisinstableandtheoiland
waterwillseparatebetween24hoursto14daysdependingontheamountofhydrocarbonsand
amountofHyDeXused.

ForheavysludgeadditionalHyDeXisrequired,thusincreasestheamountoftimerequiredfor
separation. Where the separation time is crucial, analysis on the hydrocarbons with HyDeX
shouldbeconductedtoconfirmseparationcharacteristics.
