Boiler Acoustic Sootblowers - Boiler Services

Overview
BTADrayton is the only sootblower manufacturer to
embrace both media (steam/air), and non-media
(acoustic) sootblowers. In addition to supplying spare
parts for Diamond Power, Copes Vulcan and
Bergemann sootblowers, BTADrayton has
developed our own design for Sonic Sootblowers.
BTADrayton Sonic Horns can be used in a variety of
applications for the purposes of dislodging material
build-up. The most common use for Sonic Horns or
Sootblowers is in the back pass of the boiler, where
the flue gas temperature is low enough to produce a
dry fryable deposit.
Sonic Horns/Sonic Sootblowers are air operated devices that produce low frequency, high energy sound
waves. The sound waves are produced when compressed air enters the sound generator and forces the
only moving part, a titanium diaphragm, to flex. The flexing action of the diaphragm generates sound
waves that are amplified by the sonic horns bell. The resulting sound waves cause particulate deposits to
resonate and dislodge from the surfaces to which they have bonded. Once dislodged, the deposits are
then removed by gravity and/or gas flow.
Sonic Horns/Sonic Sootblowers have been successfully installed on boilers burning a variety of fuels. Such
as coal, garbage, oil, and wood. The use of Sonic Horns on boiler applications offer many advantages
when used with conventional style Sootblowers.
Benefits
Improved Heat Transfer Efficiency - Sonic Sootblowers in boiler applications, are typically operated for
ten seconds every ten minutes. The aggressive sounding of the acoustic cleaners keep the soot deposits
from building up on the heat transfer surfaces. This allows for heat transfer efficiency to be maintained at
all times. Steam Sootblowers alone are cycled much less frequently (every four to eight hours) allowing
heat transfer surfaces to build up deposits before cleaning. This results in periods of poor heat transfer
efficiency.
Improved Boiler Emissions - The repeated sounding of Sonic Sootblowers on. ten minute intervals also
benefits the performance of the pollution control equipment. The acoustic cleaners are entraining a
nominal amount of soot deposits every time they are sounded allowing the pollution control equipment
(Baghouse, Electrostatic Precipitator, Mechanical Collector) to more efficiently collect the entrained soot,
resulting in lower emissions. This benefit is more pronounced on boilers not equipped with sophisticated
pollution control equipment.
Extended Life of Heat Transfer Surfaces - The low frequency high energy sound waves emitted from
BTADrayton Sonic Sootblowers are not damaging to the boiler internals. The sound waves are an efficient
means of cleaning the heat transfer surfaces without causing tube erosion or thinning. Experience also
shows that the sound waves have no adverse effect on refractory or welds.
Maintenance Cost Savings - BTADrayton Sonic Soothlowers have only one moving part, a titanium
diaphragm. The diaphragm is guaranteed for one year and has a life expectancy of over five years. The
low maintenance required for the acoustic cleaners offers potential money savings when used to augment
the operation of conventional Steam Sootblowers.
