ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING INSTITUTE

UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES DILIMAN

EEE 4 INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS AND EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION. Electrical measurements and some of their industrial applications. Operating principles,
characteristics, and application of electrical equipment. Equipment and devices used for system protection
and control. Applications in power and industrial systems. Modern control devices in industry.
PREREQUISITE. EEE 1 (Essentials of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) or EEE 3 (Elementary
Electrical Engineering)
CREDITS. 3 units. (2 one-hour lecture sessions and 1 three-hour laboratory session per week)

COURSE GOALS
At the end of the semester, you should be able to accomplish the following:
1. Appreciate the operation and application of electrical equipment in industrial power systems.
2. Apply quantitative methods in analyzing and predicting the behavior of electrical equipment.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. 2 QUIZZES (10 pts. each). This is a written examination to assess your understanding of the topics.
2. 2 EXAMS (30 pts. each). This is a written examination to assess your understanding of the topics.
The exams are more comprehensive than the quizzes in terms of coverage and variety.
3. 2 PAPERS (5 pts. each). You need to submit a one-page reflection paper after the first and second
exam. Each paper should answer the following questions: (a) What have you learned in EEE 4 (lec
and lab) so far? Cite specific examples. (b) How do you think you can apply the concepts you have
learned so far after you graduate? (c) How do you feel about the course? You can comment on your
experiences in EEE 4 (lec and lab) so far.
4. 1 REPORT (10 pts.). This is a group presentation on the application of industrial electronics and
equipment AND mechanical engineering across other disciplines. The report must showcase the
groups understanding and appreciation of the concepts learned in EEE 4 in relation to mechanical
engineering and other disciplines.

CLASS POLICIES
a. PASSING THE COURSE. To pass EEE 4, both your lecture and laboratory grade must be at least
60% each. This in non-negotiable.
b. FINAL GRADE. Your grade in the lecture is equal to your total accumulated points. Your grade in
EEE 4 is the average of your lecture and laboratory grades. Each of your lecture, laboratory, or final
grade cannot exceed 100%.
c. APPEAL FOR CORRECTIONS. Appeals for corrections to exam results are only valid for up to two
weeks after the exam has been returned or until the deadline of submission of grades, whichever is
first.
d. LATE SUBMISSIONS. Submissions made outside the designated UVLE submission bin are
considered late and will automatically merit a grade of zero.
e. MISSED QUIZ OR EXAM. If unexcused, you will get a grade of zero for a missed quiz or exam. If
excused, (A) a missed quiz will be replaced by your score in the next long exam and (B) a missed
exam will be replaced by a comprehensive exam at the end of the course. You can only have one
excused missed quiz or exam.
f.

INCOMPLETE. Failure to submit the report will merit a grade of INC provided that your standing is at
least 60% in both the lecture and the laboratory components of EEE 4.

g. NO REMOVAL EXAMS. I will not give a grade of 4.0.
