A $10,700 EMA grant was
used to purchase the trailer.
Customization costs of $6,700
came from the Sheriffs equipment line item. Equipment
for the trailer is being paid for
from different line items in the
sheriffs budget.
The sheriffs fleet has several vehicles capable of towing
the mobile command center.

It wont necessarily be the

in after the scene is secure.
He noted his department

name of one Civil War veteran,

whose name hasnt, as of yet,
been located in spite of exhaustive research.
County commissioners have
announced that a special dedication ceremony for the new
plaque at the courthouse at
2:30 p.m. on June 19. The public is invited and encouraged to
be present for the ceremony.
I became curious years ago
when talking with Uncle Ray
(Keck) about how many veteran casualties there are in our
county, said Holtsberry. One
by one we started to work on
and compile a list. Melinda
Krick was a big help. I knew
she had kept a list on file on her
computer.
She made the list available
to me and Jonathan Lichty
made his resources on the mat-

ter available to me, continued

Holtsberry. We have the name
of every person in Paulding
County who gave their life in
the service of our country.
Holtsberry said that recorded names go back as far as the
Revolutionary War and War
of 1812. The commissioner
noted that the war monument
is designed in such a way that
names can be corrected if necessary. There is also additional
space for names to be added.
One of the hardest things
was seeing pictures of guys
in uniforms with smiles on
their faces prior to going into
World War I, said Holtsberry. To see those guys with
smiles on their faces and then
to know that they never made
it home, plus all of the grief in
their families, that was tough.

I thought, What would

they have done in research?
What would their families and
children have looked like?
What they would have done
for a career if they had come
back, said Holtsberry. How
many future doctors or judges
are laying out there? Thats
the part that really bothers
me.
Holtsberry said that the most
meaningful part of the project
was talking to friends and relatives of the fallen veterans. He
noted that many of the stories
he heard were very heart-rending and emotional for him.
It has given me an even
greater respect for the price
that was paid for our freedom,
said Holtsberry. We are looking for a really good attendance
at the dedication service.

June is here already! As

I write this, tonight will be
daughter Lorettas eighth grade
graduation at the school. This
will be the fifth of our eight
children completing their
school years. Time slips by
so fast. Life brings so many
changes through the years.
Today, June 2, also marks
five years now that daughter Verena, 17, had that bad
brain concussion. At the time
doctors told us that she will
heal one hundred percent, but
it will take time. We can now
see what they meant, but there
were some hard years for Verena and our family. How thankful we are. God is good and has
given us many blessings.
This week is a very busy
week with neighbor Joe and
Susies wedding and nephew
Ben and Lovinas wedding,
both on Thursday. We will
work in both! We decided to go
to Berne, Ind. and attend Ben
and Lovinas wedding, and
after lunch, well come back
home and go to Joe and Susies
wedding for the evening meal.
I was asked to be cook at
both weddings. Timothy and
daughter Elizabeth were asked
to be table waiters at both weddings. They were asked several
weeks earlier to be table waiters at Joe and Susies wedding and had already said they
would before Ben and Lovinas plans were published. Joe
and Susie bought the house just
down the road from us and will
be our new neighbors. Daughter Verena will be a table waiter
at Ben and Lovinas wedding.
She will find a way home
(back from Berne) with someone from my family. I need to
do the finishing touches on her
peacock colored dress suit yet.
Elizabeth has to wear a tan colored suit to be table waiter.
Tomorrow morning I will go
help bake pies for Joe and Susies wedding. I was also asked
to help for Ben and Lovinas
wedding but since this is closer Ill just walk over to help.
I really wish both weddings
wouldnt have been on the
same day but sometimes that
happens.
The school will also have

the school picnic on Thursday.

Doors will close after the picnic until next term. They always do lots of fun things on
the last day so Joseph, Lovina, and Kevin want to go to
school. They will go with us to
Joe and Susies wedding in the
evening. Loretta cant participate in a lot of the activities on
fun day so she will go with us
to Berne, Ind. My sisters Verena and Susan will travel with
us to Berne and also come back
for Joe and Susies wedding
as they were asked to be dish
washers. Usually the dish washers make sure all the dishes get
packed back up in boxes and
put in the wedding wagon. This
takes a lot of the work load off
the cooks and helps out cleaning up the next day.
Our highlight of the week is
our horse Ginger giving birth
to a little filly. She is pure black
like Itty Bits filly, Black Beauty. They could pass for twins but
Black Beauty is a month older
and has grown a lot. We are still
pending on the name. Everyone

Following too close caused 67,000 crashes in 2014

VAN WERT - Motorists
that dont leave enough space
between vehicles cause far too
many crashes in Ohio each year.
This violation, known as following too close or failing to maintain
an assured clear distance ahead
(ACDA), was the most frequent
cause of crashes overall in Ohio
in 2014. In total, 67,886 crashes
on Ohio roadways occurred when
the at-fault driver was following
too closely, resulting in 62 deaths
and 27,294 injuries.
Troopers wrote 11,926 citations that included an ACDA
violation last year, primarily between the afternoon rush hours
of 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
If a motorist travels at 65 mph,
he or she has traveled nearly the

length of a football field in just

three seconds. If the vehicle in
front of him or her slams on the
breaks, and there isnt enough
distance between cars, theres no
way to stop before it is too late.

Traffic can be frustrating,

but thats no excuse to endanger
yourself and other drivers, said
Lt. Tim Grigsby, Post Commander at Van Wert. Its always
best for all motorists to maintain

a safe following distance.

Remember, following too
closely diminishes motorists
view of the big picture, meaning
they are unable to see what is
going on further down the road-

being trained for duty.
Judge John DeMuth met briefly with
the commissioners to discuss the district

Judge Suzanne Rister spoke to the

Schroeder stated Poggemeyer will
assist with the bid documents/specs
and the bidding process. They will also
make sure the project is advertised in
a paper of major circulation (Bowling
Green Sentinel was suggested), as well
as soliciting contractors specializing in
the type work required. Poggemeyer
will also review bids and make an award
recommendation. They will provide a
contract and the proper AIA documents
once a contractor has been selected
for the project. Poggemeyer will also
monitor the project during construction
until completion. Schroeder quoted an
estimate of $6,000 for their complete
services from beginning to end of the
project.
Claudia Fickel and Ann Pease - The
commissioners and Fickel and Pease
walked around the courthouse exterior
to discuss the landscaping. All agreed
updates are needed. Several bushes
need to be pulled and replaced. It was

suggested that lava rock to match what

is around the war memorial be used
instead of mulch. The mulch tends
to blow away. Zartman thought the
grounds would look nicer if there were
more color. Different perennials were
discussed and it was decided the commissioners would try to find a nursery or
landscaping business that could recommend plants, trees or bushes that would
be appropriate.
Commissioners Journal May 18, 2015
This 18th day of May, 2015, the
Board of County Commissioners met
in regular session with the following
members present: Roy Klopfenstein,
Tony Zartman, Mark Holtsberry, and
Nola Ginter, Clerk.
MEETING NOTES OF APPOINTMENTS
Marsha Yeutter, PC Senior Center,
presented the United Way grant application for the commissioners review. She is
asking for $7,500 and will designate it for
meals expense.
Yeutter reminded the commissioners
of the Paulding County Senior Day at
the OSU Extension hall tomorrow. She
reported having 500 meals ordered for
Senior Day. Yeutter encouraged the commissioners to stop out for the festivities.
She then discussed the mileage reimbursement for volunteers, saying she is
trying to find a way to allow an increase
in the rates.
Jim Guelde The commissioners requested a meeting with Guelde to discuss
the courthouse landscaping upkeep and
maintenance. The commissioners noted
they would contact Grunwell-Cashero
Co. (the company who did the tuck-pointing last summer) to see when they plan to
come back and finish their project. Guelde
noted some plants need replacing due to
being trampled during the tuck-point
project. He also reported he was ill and
out of commission for two weeks. He just
recently has been able to get back on his
work schedule.
Guelde presented a quote from a subcontractor for spraying the yard and flower
beds. The commissioners approved the
quote and asked Guelde to proceed with
the spraying. The commissioners and
Guelde then walked the courthouse perimeter to evaluate what needs to be done
to spruce it up.
Chris Banks met with the commissioners to discuss the landscaping inside the
sidewalks next to the courthouse. They
walked the perimeter of the courthouse
and requested Banks recommendation
for replacements for the bushes.

Master Gardener hotline

available for questions
PAULDING With gardening season here
again, quickly come the questions: Is this a bad
bug or good bug? Whats wrong with this cabbage plant? How does one transplant petunias?
Can these two plants grow side by side? How
much water is too much?
To help the public with gardening questions a
Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) helpline will be available
again this year through
The Ohio State University Extension Office
in Paulding. Community members can call,
email or even stop in
with a sample plant or
bug for volunteers to
look at and diagnose.
This free service will
be available from June
through September from 9 a.m. until noon each
Tuesday. Volunteers will help the public figure
out what the problem is and answer their questions. If they cannot help, they will refer people to
one of The Ohio State University experts.
Questions can be called in to 419-399-8225.
Walk-ins may be brought to the office, located at
503 Fairground Drive in Paulding.
When calling the helpline, supply as much information as possible. The more data provided,
the easier it is for the trained volunteer to assist.
Personal visits with plant samples are encouraged. In many cases, seeing the problem makes diagnosing the horticultural concern easier. When
bringing a sample to the extension office, make
sure it is of sufficient size: a branch 1- to 2- feet
in length, a piece of sod the size of a dinner plate
or several leaves of a plant. Samples that are
completely dead are not as useful as portions of
plants that are just beginning to show symptoms
or withering.

E-mailing a question is very helpful in identifying a plant or plant growth problem. When
e-mailing, attach low resolution photos so the
problem can be seen.
The helpline program gives the public an opportunity to get answers to their gardening, insect, tree, flower, herb, wildlife, pond, landscaping and fruit questions from trained
volunteers. Master

faculty,

call center operators
to respond with the
latest and most pertinent information. A network of resources is available to them including numerous informational
fact sheets, an extensive library and electronic
technology.
The Master Gardener program is sponsored
by The Ohio State University and Extension
programs. Master Gardener volunteers receive
a base training of horticulture information plus
continued training to help prepare them for this
project. They have completed rigorous program
requirements, communally logging hundreds of
volunteer hours working in gardens, answering
landscape and environmental questions.
The Paulding County Extension program currently has 14 volunteers. During 2013 more than
1,000 hours were donated to community service
projects including the services of the Master Gardener helpline.
In addition to the gardening season hours,
helpline assistance is available year round, but it
may not be staffed in person.

Skill-a-thon through the
eyes of a 4-H exhibitor

By DEVON SMITH

4-H Writer
PAULDING It wasnt only about having
the knowledge of livestock; it was about teamwork as well. That describes Skill-a-thon, the
last step 4-H exhibitors have to take before
going to the Paulding County Fair.
Its important that Skill-a-thon runs smoothly in order for all the exhibitors to complete
their assignments. The purpose of Skill-a-thon
is basically an exercise to test an individuals
knowledge of specific subject matter using the
experiential learning model of exploring, reflecting and applying that knowledge.
Skill-a-thon was held on May 27 from 4-7
p.m. at the Extension hall on the Paulding
County Fairgrounds. This year the new 4-H
Youth Development Educator, Michael Schweinsberg, took the leadership role in coordinating the Skill-a-thon.
It took a month and a half of planning,
meetings and cooperation with everyone to
get Skill-a-thon rolling, said Schweinsberg.
There were a few small changes, but noth-

ing major that I know of. One of the small

changes was the tables positions were moved
to try and give more room for all of the stations and for the exhibitors, said Schweinsberg.
The total number of exhibitors that came
during the three-hour Skill-a-thon totaled 180.
With this many youth coming through Skilla-thon, the judges and volunteers worked together to make Skill-a-thon run smoothly.
From our judges to the volunteers teamwork played a big role in Skill-a-thon. I believe the judges and volunteers were eager to
help and learn to work Skill-a-thon. This year
over 60 volunteers helped out and for many it
was their first time, said Schweinsberg.
According to Schweinsberg, Skill-a-thon
ran smoothly with no major problems during
the three-hour session.
If we didnt have teamwork at Skill-athon, then it wouldnt have run so smoothly
and we wouldnt have had enough time to get
all 180 exhibitors through, concluded Schweinsberg.

Jammin around the area

Summer time is wonderful
because there is always something to do and places to go.
There are upcoming fairs, festivals, parades, and outdoor
concerts. It is nice to be outside or even inside listening
to music. Music is a universal
language which can calm our
souls and lift our spirits.
I dont call myself a socalled musician, but more of
an entertainer. Those who are
familiar with me know that I
have been pounding piano and
keyboard keys for most of my
life. I am not one to brag on
myself, but when things are
difficult for me in my own life
music has played an important part in helping me cope.
To me music can brighten up
your day and a song in your
heart is always good.
There are many talented
musicians around this area.
I cannot even name them all,
however, I can let you know
about all the jam sessions and
open mics surrounding us and
where you may see some good
talent close to home. If you
ever want to get away from
everything and enjoy some
music or perhaps bring your
musical instrument and play
along, you just may be the star
of the show.
Jam sessions are fairly informal and most of the time
they are free to get into and
usually there is snacks or food
available. If you are a musician, dancer or just like to listen, you can leave your troubles outside the door and relax
for a couple of hours. To me it
is better than medicine.
A lot of these musical events
started in a park, around a

campfire, or maybe even in a
barn. The music in these musical events are mostly old
country, blue grass, with a little bit of old rock and roll and
a little bit of blues. Whenever
you decide to go to one, be
prepared to kick up your heels
and have a good time.
I am going to make an attempt to list the jam sessions
in and around Paulding County. If I miss one, please let me
know by email. One of the
longest lasting jam sessions is
in Melrose at the Opry Barn.
The music begins at approximately 6 p.m. and there is a
dance floor available.
Every other Monday night,
there is a group of musicians
who get together and perform
in Vaughnsville. I have never
attended this jam, but from all
reports it is a fun place to go.
Again, music begins at 6.
On Tuesday evenings, Steve
Scott hosts a music session
with many locals showing
their talents. There is good
seating and this too has been
in the community for some

Business News

time. Scotts is located just

outside of Oakwood.
Another event on Tuesday
nights is at the diner in Oakwood. This music presented
there is gospel music and I
hear the food is fantastic.
If you want to travel to Edgerton there is a band playing
called the Tuesday Night Jammers. This is hosted by local
musician Don Bowdle and is
held at the K of C Hall. There
is a big dance floor and snacks
are available.
I am sure there are some
Wednesday night events, but I
am not quite sure where they
are located. One of them is in
Whitehouse with Candy Miller.
Thursday nights there is
open mic at the Continental
American Legion. The food
is excellent and there is a big
dance floor for anyone who
wants to dance. This is hosted
by Len Collier, a long-time
musician around this area.
Also, on the first Wednesday
of the month, there is open mic
at the Defiance County Senior
Center where you can see all
your favorite locals performing.
So get out your dancing
shoes and either go hear an outdoor concert or come to one of
the free jam sessions. I promise
you will have fun and at my
age, that is what life is about.
If I missed any jam or event
email me at nancywhitaker@
yahoo.com.
Can you sing? Do you play
an instrument? Maybe you can
tell a good joke. If you can then
come on out and visit one of
these jams and Ill give you a

Attorneys expand with

Paulding satellite office
PAULDING Attorneys Shaun A. Putman
and Rachel L. Franklin are pleased and excited
to announce the expansion of their law practice through the opening of a satellite office at
108 E. Jackson St. in Paulding. With a grand
opening scheduled for June 26, attorneys Putman and Franklin will be practicing under the
name Putman Law Offices LLC.
Both attorneys are committed to offer the
residents of Paulding County and its adjoining counties the same legal expertise, service,
and professionalism they currently offer out of
their office located in Van Wert.
Attorney Franklin explained, As a lifelong
Paulding County resident and Paulding High
School alumni, opening this satellite office
provides me with an opportunity to get back
to my roots and provide quality legal services
to those I consider neighbors. I am already
heavily involved in the Paulding County court
system, and with the opening of our Paulding
office, I am excited to be able to give back to
this great community.
Attorney Putman added, Paulding County
already has great attorneys, judges, and court
officials and staff. We have an excellent office in Van Wert, and I look forward to adding
our expertise and skills to this community as
well.

COLUMBUS Paulding
County track athletes completed their season over the
weekend with all of the countys runners who qualified to
the state meet claiming their
respective spots on the awards
podium.
On the boys side, Antwerps
junior Sam Williamson also
wrapped up a tremendous season with a third place finish in

the 3200 run, crossing the line

with a time of 9:25.88.
Williamson, a fixture at the
state meet, enjoyed his best
finish and time in the 3200.
Last year, the Archer managed 10th place with a time of
10:10.30. The slower time was
the result of also running ion
the 1600, where he finished
fourth. This year, Williamson
concentrated on just the 3200.
His first year, as a freshman,
Williamson finished 10th with
a time of 9:57.50.

1:46.92.

CMH 5K to benefit
Edon fire department

HICKSVILLE On April 2, the community of Edon suffered

a serious blow. While some members of the Florence Township
Fire Department were having a meeting in the fire department
building, one of the truck bays started burning. Luckily no one
was injured but all five of their fire trucks and nearly all of their
gear was destroyed. Nearby fire departments battled the fire, but
the fire department suffered huge losses.
The community has rallied and many fundraising events have
been scheduled to help replace the losses. Community Memorial Hospital of Hicksville will be sponsoring a 5K race and
walk event on June 27 that will be held at Walz Park in Edon.
The event will start at 9 a.m. with registration beginning at 8
a.m.
T-shirts will be given out to the first 100 participants. Community Memorial Hospital will also be selling the T-shirts at
the Firemens Convention, which will be held in Hicksville on
June 19-20. The cost of the shirts are $15 each and the cost of
the 5K is $20.
All profits will go directly to the Florence Township Fire Department.

Wayne Traces Baumletop player in county

HAVILAND Senior
pitcher Addison Baumle of
Wayne Trace was selected the
2015 Paulding County Softball Player of the Year by the
Paulding County Progress in
voting by the county coaches
recently.
Baumle was a unanimous
choice after striking out 99
batters in 73-2/3 innings on
the mound for the Raiders.
Addisons love of the
game of softball has made it
very enjoyable to coach her
over the years, stated Raider
head coach and Addisons father, Jack. She always gives
100 percent, whether it is at
practice or during a game.
At the plate, Baumle hit .429
on the season totaling 33 hits,
including seven doubles, a triple and four home runs. She
also drove in 16 runs while
scoring 23, the latter of which
tied for tops in the county.
She is an unselfish player no matter where she plays
on the field, continued the
Raider mentor. She has put in
many extra hours into pitching, hitting and fielding to become a better softball player.
I am going to miss all of the
time we have spent together

through the years working

together. It has been a lot of
fun.
Joining Baumle on the
all-county team are three of
her senior teammates in Molly Crosby, Mackenzie Swary
and Bailey Bergman.
The Antwerp trio of Cheyenne Miller-Sweet, Avery
Braaten and Olivia Tempel
also were selected as was the
Paulding duo of Morgan Riley
and Audrey Manz.
Bailey Bergman finished
with a .392 batting average
on the season, posting 29 hits
on the year. The Raider senior
topped the county in home
runs (five) and runs batted in
(27) on the season.
Molly Crosby batted .443
on the year to finish as the
county runner-up, recording
a county-high 35 hits. She
also scored 19 runs and added
three doubles while driving in
a dozen runs. On the mound,
Crosby tossed 72-1/3 innings
and struck out 76 hitters.
Mackenzie Swary, a senior
catcher/center fielder, ended
the year batting .385 and tied
for the county lead in runs
scored at 23.

Olivia Tempel drove in a

dozen runs for Antwerp and
posted a Paulding County high
of 10 doubles while hitting
.383 for the Archers.
Cheyenne Miller-Sweet hit
.359 for the blue-and-white,
totaling 23 hits that also included four doubles. Miller-Sweet scored nine runs for
Antwerp and posted 12 runs
batted in.
Avery Braaten also had a
dozen runs batted in for the
Archers, picking up 24 hits
on the year with three doubles
and a triple while finishing
with a .329 batting average.
She also scored a team-high
14 runs.
Morgan Riley led all county players with a .471 batting
average for the Panthers, ending with 33 hits, two doubles
and two triples. Riley also
touched the plate a squad-high
17 times.
Audrey Manz batted .339
on the season with 11 runs
scored and led the Panthers
with 16 runs batted in. She
also recorded five doubles on

ODOT projects

The following is a weekly report regarding current and upcoming highway road construction projects in the Ohio Department of Transportation District
One, which includes Paulding
County:
Berm work will take place
at the following locations during
the week with traffic maintained
through the work zone. Work is
being performed by the Paulding
County ODOT maintenance garage: Ohio 637 between SR 111
and SR 613; Ohio 613 from just
west of Ohio 637 to the Putnam
County line; Ohio 49 from the Van
Wert County line to Ohio 111.
Ohio 613 from Ohio 500
to U.S. 127 east of Payne will be
restricted to one lane through the
work zone for pavement repair
and resurfacing. The project will
continue until late June. The portion of the project on Ohio 613
from the state line to the village
of Payne is largely complete with
berm work and pavement markings remaining to be completed.
Beginning June 8 and continuing
for approximately two weeks,
work to install curb ramps within
the village of Payne will take place
with little effect on traffic anticipated. Beginning June 8, paving
on Ohio 613 from Ohio 500 to
U.S. 127 will restrict traffic to one
lane through the work zone.
U.S. 127 between Garfield
Avenue and Jackson Street in
Paulding will be closed for approximately eight months beginning April 13 for a sewer separation project. Traffic detoured
onto Ohio 613, Ohio 637 and
Ohio 111 back to U.S. 127.
Work is being performed by
VTF Excavation, Celina.

Pool to open June 15

PAULDING The Paulding Municipal Swimming pool is

set to open on Monday, June 15.
Hours will be Monday-Thursday, noon-6:30 p.m.; Friday
and Saturday, noon-7:30 p.m. and Sunday, 1-6:30. Admission
is $3. Children under 3 and adults over 65 are free.
The pool opening is usually a few weeks earlier, but this
season has been postponed for several reasons.
Paulding Village had the pool floor professionally painted
by Howard Painting of Defiance, which was delayed because
of cool weather this spring. The metal structure of the slide and
the bathhouse interior also were given a fresh coat of paint.
Northwest Pools of Toledo are installing the chlorine pumps,
which are removed at the end of each season for cleaning and
maintenance.
Workers began filling the pool on Monday, a process that
takes three days.
After concessions are put in place, the chlorine pumps are
ready and the pool is filled, the health department will make a
final inspection before opening day.
Another reason for delays this year was because schools
were in session later than usual; many pool employees are high
school students. A total of 22 people have been employed as
lifeguards, concession workers and front desk workers. Pool
manager is Jacob Shook.
Several special events are in the planning stages, such as the
popular dive-in movie nights.
Councilman Roger Sierer noted that the recreation committee is looking into getting a new pool heater if they can obtain
a grant. They also are considering purchasing a solar blanket
to help prevent heat loss at night.

Hee Haw to return in Aug.

PAULDING John Paulding
Historical Society (JPHS) will
present Hysterical Hee Haw
on Aug. 15 this year. Organizers
are now looking for all sorts of
talent.
If you can sing, dance, play a
musical instrument, tell jokes or
just generally be silly, your help
is needed.
The production also needs
volunteers to help on stage, be-

hind the scenes, with make-up,

hair, costumes, set-building or
props, and with sound and lighting equipment.
Those who would like to help
in any way should contact Judy
Wells, the director, by phone at
419-393-4105 or send her an
email at philandjudy@artelco.
net. Or, stop at the museum any
Tuesday to speak with her in person.

Bubba Gump strawberries

Strawberry shortcake.
Strawberry pie. Strawberry
jam. Strawberry sorbet. Strawberry milkshake. Strawberry
sundae. Strawberry smoothie.
Strawberry wine. Strawberry
ice cream. Chocolate covered strawberries. Strawberry
cheesecake. Strawberries
and cream. Strawberry trifle.
Strawberry mousse. Strawberry yogurt.
Tis the season and with
strawberries being one of my
favorite fruits, I want to make
them all. Today. Ill start with
shortcake, move on to cheesecake, and wrap it up with a
smoothie. I dont think I could
ever eat too many strawberries.
While the most commonly
grown strawberries are June
bearing, we grow Tribute at
our house, a day neutral berry
that gives us a big flush of
fruit in June. It then produces
berries all summer in lesser
amounts and then another bigger picking awaits us in fall.
There are three types of
strawberry plants: June bearing, everbearing, and day neutral. The June bearing gives
one crop of strawberries in
June and both the everbearing and day neutral produce
berries all summer into fall,
with the day neutral producing
higher yields. Another vigorous day neutral variety besides
Tribute is Tristar.
Strawberries are quirky little
fruits with a long list of did
you know? facts:
Strawberries are the only
fruits with seeds on the outside.
They are the first fruit to
ripen in the spring.
The strawberry is a member of the rose family.
The average strawberry is
covered with 200 seeds.
Strawberries are low in
calories, having 55 calories in
one cup, unsweetened.

BOOK SWAPS Paulding Elementary had its first book swap at the end of the school year to
promote summer reading. Children were invited to bring gently used books to donate for other
children to read. Every child had the opportunity to choose books to take home to read this summer, along with a new summer reading incentive. The school was selected by Ohio First Lady
Kasich to receive 200 free books that were included in the swap. Paulding Elementary was chosen
because it has proven its commitment to student success. Nearly 2,000 books went home with
students to read this summer. Three more book swaps are planned this summer to provide opportunities for students to get new books and remain excited about reading on June 16, July 7 and
Aug. 4 from 9-10:30 a.m. Students who come to the elementary library will get to listen to a story,
swap books and have an opportunity to read. The goal is built on helping children learn and love
to read. Allowing children to choose the books they want to read is creating excitement and joy
that will only create positive results.

You never know whos

in the background

The seeds on the outside of a strawberry are called achenes and

are not actual seeds. Strawberries are usually propagated by runners.

In the
Garden

By
Kylee Baumle
Eight medium-sized
strawberries contain 140% of
the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C.
Strawberries will not
ripen further once they are
picked.
It takes three days for a
strawberry to ripen from green

to white to red.
In the U.S., California
produces 83% of the countrys strawberries. One year of
the states harvest laid end to
end would circle the earth 15
times.
There is a strawberry museum in Belgium.
A full moon in June is called
a strawberry moon because it coincides with strawberry harvest.
Though the apple and banana are the favorite fruits of
most Americans, we still average eating nearly five pounds per
person per year. If youre one of
those people who doesnt like
strawberries, Im probably eating
your share.

Friday night as the Relay

For Life was in full swing, just
prior to the luminary ceremony, one of the leaders received
a phone call that her parents
had been in a car accident en
route to the luminary ceremony.
The phone call stated that
the parents had been in a car
accident just minutes before
arriving at the Paulding County Fairgrounds. Although they
appeared to be all right,
physically, their car had been
totaled and various emergency
crews were in the process of
assisting with the situation.
After a totaled vehicle and
an airbag in the face, there are
definitely some severe bumps
and bruises, said the official
who asked for special prayer
from close friends.
Later the official wrote on
her Facebook site, My heart
overflows with thank yous, as
in the next few moments my
friends, family and Relay family stepped up and took care
of the family if it were their
own.
The thank you mentions
were indicative of all of those
who work behind the scenes
when there is an accident or
emergency: Paulding Fire
Department and EMS, Ohio
State Patrol, Marsha Yeutter,
everyone who helped locate
transportation, a new hero,
Paul, for getting them home;
and to the entire community
family.
