THE JUDGE
LIUS LASAHIDO
Hi, my name is Lius Lasahido, an illustrator based in Jakarta, Indonesia. I've been doing
illustration since 2008, specializing in concept art and fantasy illustration. I've worked
for several game and trading card game companies. Currently I am busy growing a studio
consisting small team of illustrators, called Polar Engine. I'm truly happy to be your judge
for Ascension 20 and I can't wait to see some awesome pieces, good luck guys!

THE CHALLENGE

Design a comic book cover for Image comics: "SPAWN"

DEADLINE IS JUNE 7TH 7PM EST

You have 2 options
(A) Redesign the character as you please as long as you keep the following elements on
your design:

Must have red drapery/cloth element of some sort.

Must have the "M" for Malbolgia on him somewhere.
Must have the Spawn face pattern in some way shape or form, such as a simple outline or
even tattoos, be creative.
Must have chains.
Must have spikes.
must have glowing green eyes.
Must have Spawn's skull accessories somewhere in the design.
The character must look like he's died. Which means stay away from the clean superhero
look.
***If you're redesigning, your goal is to make something fresh and new but still recognizable
to the audience.
People should be able to easily think "Spawn" when they look at your piece.

OR
(B) Spawn Fanart.

What are we looking for?

It doesn't matter if you redesign or simply do fan art, we just wanna see something cool.
Something that would make us want to buy this book.

Canvas size must be the standard

11" x 17" at your desired DPI
(preferably 300 DPI)

Make sure you design the cover with the logos in mind.
(which you can add to the final piece)

Lt. Colonel Albert Francis "Al" Simmons, USMC (Ret.), was a highly trained covert operative
who was at his most successful point when he saved the President from an attempted
assassination. He was promoted to a high level within the CIA devoted to black ops. Once
there, he began to question the morality of what his agency was doing.
Jason Wynn hired Bruce Stinson (codenamed Chapel), Simmons' friend and partner, to kill
him. In a blazing inferno, Simmons was murdered and his soul was sent to Hell because he
had knowingly killed innocents during his days in the CIA.
Simmons made a deal to sell his soul to a Demonic Being known as "Malebolgia" to get to see
his wife, Wanda, once again. He was allowed to come back; however he came back five years
later as some kind of strange Hellspawn with no memory of what he had done. After
remembering what he had done, he sought out his wife only to find she had moved on and
married his best friend, Terry Fitzgerald and the couple had a child named Cyan.

WHAT'S THE PURPOSE OF THIS CHALLENGE?

The purpose of this challenge is to show off your illustration skills to catch the attention
of big clients such as Image, Marvel, DC, Dark Horse etc.
We're aiming to help participants build their illustration and design skills all while
building a portfolio.
