Empowering our men to be better fathers

W
e are looking forward to
celebrating another Father's Day, typically celebrated in
the United States and scores of
other countries on the third Sunday in June (21 June 2015). Its
when families gather to celebrate
the father figures in their lives.
Retailers have adapted the
holiday by promoting greeting
cards and traditionally masculine
gifts such as electronics and tools.
Schools and other children's programs commonly have activities
to make gifts for dad.
However, Father's Days celebration is nothing when compared with Mothers Day. There
is no hype or deluge of flashy,
feel-good Fathers Day TV commercials or colorful print ads
stuffed in our mailboxes. The enthusiasm to seek out that fly gift
for dad is lackluster at best. It
would appear that most people
dont care or wish to honor fathers, celebrate fatherhood and
their paternal bonds, or the influence that fathers have on society.
The latter point is signifi-

cant, especially in the African

American community where it is
estimated that some 60 percent of
the homes are fatherless and resource-poor mothers struggle to
meet the needs of their families.
We are a generation of fatherless people and based on US demographic data, the situation
could be worst for the next generation.
Financial contribution
from the father is very important.
However, his presence alone is
also significant since it prevents a
wide range of social and behavioral issues affecting children.
The United States Census Bureau
reports that 63 percent of youth
suicides occur in fatherless
homes. Furthermore, 90 percent
of all homeless and runaway children, 71 percent of all high school
dropouts, 70 percent of juveniles
in state-operated institutions and
75 percent of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers
come from fatherless homes.
These data are not good for
our communities as they continue

patrick@streethype.net

to expose us to further poverty,

criminal activities and overall
poor quality lifestyle. Perhaps
dated back to slavery, the African
American men have always been
noticeable absent from the home.
Black men have abandoned their
responsibilities of taking care of
their children and despite several
theories and suggestions put forward, things are not getting better.
While the educational and
income generation capacities of
the African American community
have much to celebrate, its commitment to family and caring for

the kids is not keeping pace with

the improved living condition.
More black juveniles are in stateoperated institutions as their single parents, in most cases women,
are unable to manage the economic as well as the emotional
needs of these children.
In our opinion, there are irresponsible mothers among us, but
if our fathers could be more supportive and take care of their children, everyone would be happy.
Nevertheless, there are millions of fathers who want to do
better and are ashamed of their
past behavior, but they genuinely
lack the resources to do better.
A strong family network is
always the most lasting commitment to build a stable and productive society. Perhaps we need
more state and federal regulations
to encourage and support the family.
If we are serious about improving the plight of the African
American community, let us empower our men to be better fathers.

People Are Talking...!

How to Be a Critical Thinker

Being a leader is like being a lady, if you
have to go around telling people you are
one, you arent. -Margaret Thatcher

ritical thinking is an important component of effective leadership, because a

leader continuously collects and assesses information to determine the best course of action for achieving objectives.
Critical thinking can help leaders sort
through a dilemma in which there is no apparent optimal course of action by providing
a framework to assess information.
For example, critical thinking can help
a leader of a work group reach a decision
when faced with a downsizing decision when
all members of the group appear to make
equal contributions.
Critical thinking also provides a leader
with a rational basis for decision making,
which helps to avoid the appearance among
followers that decisions are arbitrary.
There is no generally agreed upon definition of critical thinking, although most definitions suggest that it is a systematic process
used to reflect on information necessary to
make decisions. It can be defined as the deliberate use of a strategy to assess information and achieve a desirable outcome. It can
also be defined as a process involving reasonably reflective thinking to determine what
to believe or how to guide actions.
The reasonable aspect of critical thinking suggests that the process is based on logic
rather than emotion. The reflective aspect of
critical thinking suggests that it is a slow
process in which information is weighed and
considered rather than a rapid process that results in quick judgment.

Dr Neva
Alexander
SPEAKS

The elements of critical thinking include

actively conceptualizing, analyzing, and
evaluating information to determine factors
such as completeness or accuracy of the information. The critical thinking process also
moves from the general to the specific, based
on deductive logic intended to identify solutions to a specific problem.
Learning how to think critically can improve your decision-making processes and
help you to become a better leader. Leaders
are inherently responsible for making decisions, with the decisions often related to solv-

ing a problem that inhibits the followers from

achieving a goal. The critical thinking
process fundamentally provides a structure
based on reason for solving problems.
As a result, the leader can justify the belief or action that is the product of critical
thinking because other reasonable people in
the same situation could come to the same
conclusion.
It also strengthens your ability to collect
and evaluate information, which is a necessary process when making even minor decisions.
Critical thinking can also foster creativity because it attempts to identify and analyze
many possible solutions to a problem. As a
result, it increases the potential for identifying a new and innovative approach to a problem that has not been tried in the past.

Juicy pieces of political gossip Domino Tournament and
Workshop set for June 20

4 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER MAY 19-31, 2015

By Senator Rev. Rubn Daz

District 32 Bronx County
ou should know that the Legislative Session for the year is about to end and there
are eight juicy pieces of gossip that are making the rounds. Here they are:
(1) Word on the street is that the new
Speaker of the State Assembly, the Honorable
Carl Heastie has achieved a monumental goal
by having Governor Andrew Cuomo take
away $100 million from New York City
Mayor Bill de Blasio and send that money to
the Assembly. This way, Carl Heastie can assign $2 million to each of his members to
spend exclusively for capital improvement
projects in city housing in the respective Assembly Members districts.
Rumor has it that with this show of political gamesmanship, Speaker Carl Heastie
has outsmarted everyone and has made off
with the candies. He has left Senator John
Flanagan, Senate Majority Leader, Senator
Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Leader of the Regular Senate Democrats, and Senator Jeff
Klein, Leader of the Senate Independent Democrats in the dust.
(2) About three years ago, Senator
Joseph Addabbo was elected by this column
as the Senator with the best hairdo, beating
Senator Jos Marco Serrano by one vote. (See
Serrano v AddabboThe Battle of the Hair
http://www.nysenate.gov/press-release/whatyou-should-know-20) Senator Adriano Espaillat cast the deciding vote, showing all that
its true when they say that every vote counts.
Now, three years later, Senator Jos
Marco Serrano has not only lost 65 pounds,
but he has also changed his way of dressing
by wearing bow ties instead of neckties. He
has grown a stylish beard and walks with an
air of confidence, causing Senator Adriano
Espaillat to change his vote this year, proclaiming that Senator Jos Marco Serrano
reigns as the indisputable champion, dethroning Senator Joseph Addabbo of his title as the
Senator with the best hairdo. (We all agree
that the hairspray that Senator Jos Marco
Serrano uses gives his hair that extra hold it
is definitely a good one.)
(3) You dont have to say that you heard
this from me, but there are rumors making
their way through Albany that Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan has promised absolution
to those legislators who will support the
Parental Choice in Education Act AND that
Governor Andrew Cuomo a most astute
politician has requested two absolutions instead of one to cover up at least two mortal
sins that he has committed against the Church.
(4) You should know that Senator Gustavo Rivera really surprised everyone during
the End of Session Dinner sponsored by Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins on June 2 at
Martels Restaurant. You might be asking,
Why? What happened?
Well my dear reader, let me tell you.
While some people were making fools of
themselves doing Karaoke, when Senator
Gustavo Rivera took the microphone and
started to imitate Ray Charles, he was just fantastic! He stole the show. I do believe that
Gustavo has a life after politics.

he International Council of Domino

Livingston Pinnock, president of ICD,
said the non-profit organization seeks to educate youths and adults of the sport by introducing the skill, strategy and thought process
that is involved with playing the game.
We are engaging, especially the youth,
in a way that can help them to be better
achievers and keep them off the streets, Pinnock said.
Jamaican-born Assemblyman for Brooklyn, Nick Perry, will deliver the official
launching address for the event, which is ex-

Speaker Carl Heastie has

outsmarted everyone and
has made off with the candies.

(5) Nowadays, you can find Assemblyman Felix Ortiz walking aimlessly through
the corridors of power in Albany. Since
Somos El Futuro was taken away from him
and given to Assemblyman Marcos Crespo,
Felix doesnt seem to be too cooperative with
anybody. I have not seen him at any Somos
meetings and people are beginning to whisper
and ask why he signed contracts in Puerto
Rico for 2015 when he knew that there would
be a new Chairman.
(6) Rumor also has it that even though
there are two new leaders, Carl Heastie who
replaced Sheldon Silver as Speaker of the Assembly and John Flanagan who replaced Dean
Skelos as Senate Majority Leader, nonetheless, the key staff and confidants of the old
leaders are still in place. This gives the perception that the old guard still has some influence.
(7) While the Legislature is busy making
arrangements for the close of Session and the
Senators are debating which bills and pieces
of legislation should or should not get to see
the light of day, Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson is occupying her time by collecting petitions to run for Mayor of Mount Vernon.
Good luck with that, Ruth.
(8) Last but not least, now that American
Pharoah has won the Triple Crown, you
should know that there are some high rollers
here in Albany who are keeping in touch with
their bookies, and who are still 75% in favor
of Senator Jeff Klein becoming President ProTemp in the near future. They are so certain
that Senator Klein will become the Senates
President Pro Temp that to them, Preet
Bharara is the only one who could stop Jeff
Kleins assent to the throne.
Ladies and gentlemen, these are some
samples of the gossip that is floating around
in Albany as the Session comes to a close.

Youth Pimps on
Sex Trafficking
Charges

Continued from pgae 1

The defendants as Kadeem (a.k.a.
Deemy) Moore, 18, and Francois (a.k.a.
Frankie) Cousins, 22, both of West 23rd
Street in Brooklyn were arrested June 2 in
the Bronx, and later arraigned before
Queens County Supreme Court Justice
Ronald Hollie on an 18-count indictment
charging them both with four counts of sex
trafficking, two counts of second-degree
promoting prostitution, two counts of thirddegree promoting prostitution, two counts
of first-degree unlawful imprisonment and
one count of endangering the welfare of a
child.
Moore is additionally charged with two
counts of sex trafficking and one count each
of second-degree promoting prostitution,
third-degree promoting prostitution, firstdegree unlawful imprisonment, endangering
the welfare of a child and criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation. Bail
was set at $500,000 for Moore and
$600,000 for Cousins and bail sufficiency
hearings were ordered for both men. The defendants, who each face up to 25 years in
prison if convicted, are scheduled to return
to court on June 22, 2015.
Queens District Attorney Richard A.
Brown said, The defendants are accused of
enslaving a 16-year-old runaway and a 23year-old woman and forcing them to work
as prostitutes. The victims were allegedly
threatened physically by both defendants
and ordered to have sex with men for money
and to turn over the proceeds to the defendants. Sex trafficking is a violent, degrading
and demeaning crime that will not be tolerated.

Crime Tops
Concerns for
Bronx Residents
---------------

BRONX:

esidents of the Bronx think the quality

of life in their borough in the next few
years will get better, but they are very concern about the level of crime.
According to a NY1/Baruch College
city poll, 38 percent of Bronx residents
think the quality of life in their borough in
the next few years will get better. Nineteen
percent say it will get worse and 39 percent
say it will stay the same.
"Overall, I think Bronxites think the
borough has really turned the corner, and we
are much better off today than we were several years ago," says Borough President
Ruben Diaz Jr.
At the same time, crime is on their
minds.
The residents were asked what was the
most important problem facing the borough
today, and the top response was crime, followed by quality of public schools, lack of
affordable housing, unemployment and finally, mass transit.
"What's happening with the guns,
blades and stuff. I think the police can act a
bit better," one person says.

By Kimmy Blair
Street Hype Reporter
isbarred attorney Kenneth Gellerman, 58, of 2596 Ocean Avenue in
Bellmore, L.I. pleaded guilty on June
3 to one count of third-degree grand larceny
and one count of scheme to defraud before
Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny
Chun, who indicated he would sentence the
defendant to one year in jail if he makes restitution of $280,000.
The defendant made restitution of
$100,000 and is expected to pay an additional
$180,000 in restitution by his next court date
of August 12, 2015. If he makes the agreed
upon restitution the case will be adjourned to
September at which time he will receive one
year in jail. If he does not make the agreed
upon restitution, he could face the maximum
sentence of 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison.
According to the plea, from December
3, 2008 until September 30, 2013, the defendant engaged in a scheme to embezzle money

from more than 25 clients by depositing

checks received from negotiated settlements
into his escrow account, or into other accounts that he controlled.
The defendant withdrew money from
these accounts, according to the indictment,
by drafting checks and transferring money
into his business account. He failed to pay
his clients some or all of the money to which
they were entitled, and in at least one case,
he failed to pay money to a third party having
a claim secured by the settlement.
After he was suspended from practicing
law in January 2013, according to the indictment, the defendant continued to collect settlements without forwarding the money to
clients. To conceal these thefts, the defendant
often allegedly settled cases without informing clients, and he signed endorsements on
the reverse sides of the checks in order to deposit those checks into his accounts. He was
disbarred following his arrest last year.

Long Island Man Charged

With Series Of Delivery Thefts

LONG ISLAND:
37-year-old Yosef A. Loulai, 37, Great
Neck of Long Island, man has been
charged in six separate incidents with stealing packages after they had been delivered
to the doorsteps of Queens residences between April and June of this year.
On June 5, 2015, Loulai was arraigned
before Queens Criminal Court Judge Bruna
DiBiase on six criminal complaints, each
charging him with petit larceny. Loulai, who
faces up to six years in prison if convicted,
was ordered held on a total of $6,000
bond/$3,000 cash bail and to return to court
on July 30, 2015.
According to the criminal complaints,
Loulai was seen on video surveillance walking up to the entrance of a home on 179th
Street in Fresh Meadows on April 1, 2015,
and stealing a delivered package, which was
later discovered to contain a pair of womens
shoes valued at $111. That same day, Loulai
allegedly walked up to the entrance of another Fresh Meadows house three blocks
away and stole a package that contained a

bread maker, a book on acupuncture and a

pain relief mat. The value of the three items
was approximately $140.
According to the complaints, said District Attorney Brown, Loulai ventured onto
the porch of a home on 202nd Street in Bayside on April 8, 2015, and stole a delivered
parcel containing a filter valued at $150.
Later that day, Loulai was allegedly
seen on video surveillance in the Oakland
Gardens neighborhood of Queens approaching the stoop of a house on 214th Street and
stealing a package containing action figures
valued at $130.
On May 5, 2015, Loulai is accused of
stealing a package containing a $183 toilet
from the porch of a home on 210th Street in
Queens Village, and, on June 3, 2015, he was
observed by a police officer taking a package
from a residence on 257th Street in
Bellerose, Queens. The package contained
seven shirts valued at $135.
It should be noted that a complaint is
merely an accusation and that a defendant is
presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Jamaican Scientist Offered Over

$11 Billion For Cancer Research

Kingston, Jamaica:
ts not uncommon to hear of Jamaicans
doing BIG things both locally and internationally.
Dr. Lawrence Williams, a research consultant with the Scientific Research Council
is certainly one Jamaican who has achieved
great things and his hard work and dedication certainly make him worthy of recognition and emulation.
Williams obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 1987, after completing undergraduate studies at the University of the West
Indies (UWI) with a major in Zoology and a
minor in Chemistry.
He has been studying a compound from
the Guinea Hen Weed (scientific name:
Petiveria alliacea) for several years which
has now reached the patent stage.
Guinea Hen Weed cancer
So promising is his breakthrough that he
has already been offered over $11 billion
(US$100 million) for a patent relating to his
cancer research. The offer was however declined because its value is estimated to be
greater than what was offered.

Dr. Lawrence Williams

Dr. Williams and a Jamaican partner residing in the United States currently hold that
patent and reportedly received the impressive offer from a major drug company located in the United States.
Dr. Williams told the press that the drug
he is developing will be effective against a
range of cancers. It works on 12 kinds of
cancers so far; two or three types of breast
cancer, neuroblastoma, lung, melanoma, adenocarcinoma, prostate etc.

UN official says cholera outbreak

in Haiti needs urgent attention

NEW YORK, NY:

he cholera outbreak in Haiti remains the
largest in recent world history, according
to the United Nations official coordinating
the Organizations cholera response in the
country, yet the health crisis has fallen off the
international agenda after having ceased appearing in the media.
When cooperation funds dry up, the response teams on the ground no longer have
resources to adequately respond to alerts,
treat patients and prevent further deaths,
wrote Pedro Medrano Rojas, the senior coordinator for the cholera response in Haiti, in
an opinion piece published in Wiener
Zeitung.
Medrano said the epidemic has caused
9,000 deaths and affected more than 735,000
people since October 2010 when the outbreak
began in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Engraved in our memories are dreadful
images of dilapidated buildings and people
trying to survive in the midst of the disaster,
he said. And we can also remember the outstanding international mobilization, committed both to reconstructing the country and

fighting the cholera epidemic that emerged

months later.
He said it was understandable that television cameras were now in Nepal, where an
earthquake similar to the one in Haiti had occurred. But we cannot forget cholera, he
said. The cholera epidemic in Haiti is still a
humanitarian emergency that requires urgent
attention. How would we react if any other
country forecasted 28,000 cases of cholera
for 2015?
That World Health Organization (WHO)
forecast could be even worse if efforts were
not made to correct the course and Medrano
said the latest UN cholera fact sheet revealed
that the situation is going through its worst
moment in the last three years.
Heavy rains in September 2014 combined with the lack of resources for an appropriate response reversed previous declines,
he said, adding that since then cholera cases
skyrocketed from approximately a thousand per month to nearly a thousand per
week, with 113 people dying between January and March.

After admissibility processing at the

will receive a notice to appear (NTA) before
an immigration judge, for further proceedings
under the Cuban Migration Agreement of
1995 and the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966.
During the fiscal year 2015 (October 1

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad:
he Trinidad Express has reported that a
director of its ultimate parent company,
One Caribbean Media Limited (OCM), is
the owner of a Trinidad-based business that
laundered money through black market currency trades for former FIFA vice president
Jack Warner, who is one of 14 senior FIFA
officials and others indicted in New York on
multiple counts of racketeering, corruption
and money laundering.
According to the indictment, Warner
used almost half of a US$10 million bribe
he is alleged to have received from South
Africa to promote its successful bid to host
the 2010 World Cup in what is described as
Scheme #1 Wire Fraud and Money
Laundering, in black market currency

The BBC reported that the funds in
question were paid in three transactions
on 4 January, 1 February and 10 March
2008 from FIFA accounts into Confeder-

ation of North, Central American and

Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) accounts in Trinidad controlled by
Warner.
Documents seen by the BBC detail exactly how and when the money was transferred JTA Supermarkets subsequently
received $4,860,000 from the CONCACAF
accounts, paid in installments from January
2008 to March 2009. The largest payment
was $1,350,000 paid in February 2008.
According to US prosecutors, the
money was mostly paid back to Warner in
local currency. How the remaining money
was disbursed is currently unknown.

Maggi noodles withdrawn in

East African supermarket

Source: www.bbc.com
ast Africa's biggest supermarket chain has
withdrawn Nestle's Maggi noodle brand
from its shops in five countries, amid concerns
over food safety.
Nakumatt says the noodles have been
withdrawn from shops in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan, after demands from a Kenyan consumer group.
The group was reacting to a partial ban in
India, where regulators described the product
as "unsafe and hazardous".
Nestle maintains that Maggi noodles are
completely safe.
Maggi noodles are very popular in
Kenya, and the company's seasoning cubes,
which are not involved in the current controversy, are widely used in West African cuisine.
The Consumer Federation of Kenya
(Cofek), which launched the complaint, says
that Kenyan supermarket chains Tuskys and
Naivas have also agreed to voluntarily withdraw the noodles.
Kenya's Bureau of Standards, the official
government watchdog for product standards,
has now issued a "verbal recall" for the noodles, according to a statement on the Cofek
website.

Maggi noodles are popular in Kenya and

neighbouring countries as well as the
Caribbean
Cofek has also asked Kenya's port authority to prevent further imports of the product.
Indian food regulators said that tests revealed high lead levels in the product, describing it as "unsafe and hazardous", leading to a
ban on the product in several states.
Nestle says that since Indian regulators raised
their concerns, it has tested a batch of 1,000
Maggi noodles in the country and found "lead
levels.. well within the limits specified by food
regulations".

he purchase of real estate in Jamaica is not free of its obstacles. While a rewarding investment, care must be taken in
the approach taken in property acquisition. There are a number
of pitfalls that a Purchaser must avoid in the process and I will
examine three at this time.
1. Never give a Vendor purchase money. Countless real life
scenarios come to mind of Purchasers who have given part or
all of the purchase money to Vendors and later have to make
contact with an Attorney when the Vendor fails to deliver a duplicate Certificate of Title registered in the name of the Purchaser. Closely aligned to this issue, is the situation where a
Purchaser hands over cash to a Vendor in exchange for property
which has no registered Title and again an Attorney is contacted
on the tail end to rectify a situation that has turned sour.
Generally, unofficial arrangements such as these described
between a Vendor and Purchaser occur between persons who reside outside of Jamaica who may not feel the need to utilize a
Jamaican licensed Attorney, or they prefer to exchange funds in
the currency of the country in which they live, rather than in Jamaican currency.
2. Purchasing property without carrying out Caveat
searches or retaining a Surveyor to produce a Surveyors Report
is risky especially when purchasing a property with cash, without the need for a mortgage. Mortgage companies in approving
a mortgage and before releasing mortgage proceeds would as a
matter of course carry out a caveat search and would require a
Purchaser to submit a Surveyors Report as part of the documentation for a mortgage application.
However, do not become complacent when purchasing
property using your own resources. Ensure that caveat searches
are done before making your deposit and just before Completion. Also ensure that you obtain a Surveyors Identification Report which would delineate any breaches with covenants on the
title for the property and it doesnt matter whether you are purchasing land or land with buildings, a Surveyors report is useful.
3. Entering into a contract for the purchase of real estate
without legal assistance. While property acquisition appears to
be a straightforward process, there are quite a few complicated
steps along the way that only a properly trained professional, in
this instance, an Attorney can handle. The Vendors Attorneys
contract ultimately requires the Purchaser to sign on the dotted
line and its terms are pro Vendor for the most part. An Attorney
is useful in guiding a Purchaser through the process of a purchase, even in the instance where a Purchaser is getting a mortgage. Please bear in mind that Attorneys who work for mortgage
companies are not representing the interests of a Purchaser, but
rather at all times works in the best interest of a mortgage company. The Purchaser making payments directly to the Vendor or
his Attorney has no such clout and can only resort to the court
of law if the sale falls through.

Gatlin snatches Bolt's Rome record

Ex-FIFA vice-president Jack Warner holds a copy of a cheque as he claims to reveal an

'avalanche' of secrets and that he fears for his life. After being released from prison where he
spent last Wednesday night after appearing in court in connection with the United States efforts to extradite him on FIFA corruption charges. Warner accused the Trinidad & Tobago
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of having a hand in him being indicted and promised
to expose all he had on her.

US slams FIFA officials

with corruption indictments

BROOKLYN:
he US government arrested more than a
dozen top soccer officials and marketing executives around the world last week, charging
that officials in FIFA world soccer's governing
body have engaged in rampant and systematic
corruption, involving millions of dollars in
bribes and kickbacks, for nearly 25 years.
Seven top soccer officials were arrested at
a five-star hotel in Zurich, Switzerland, in a dramatic early morning raid. These officials were
taken into custody as part of a multinational
swoop by law enforcement on FIFA headquarters around the world.
The 47-count indictment levels charges at
nine FIFA officials and five marketing executives, including racketeering, conspiracy, corruption, and wire fraud. Defendants include the
current and former presidents of CONCACAF,
Jeffrey Webb and Jack Warner, as well as Eugenio Figuredo, a current FIFA vice-president and
executive committee member.
The arrests were made at the request of the

US Department of Justice, which has been investigating FIFA for years. In a separate case,
the Swiss attorney general's office seized data
from FIFA's main office in Zurich related to the
2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Simultaneous to the arrests in Switzerland,
the FBI was executing a search warrant on the
Miami headquarters of CONCACAF, FIFA's regional confederation overseeing the Americas
and the Caribbean.
Taking advantage of terrorism laws, US officials framed these prosecutions as part of a
much larger, ongoing fight against corruption
and fraud that makes use of the US financial
system.
"If you touch our shores with your corrupt
enterprise you will be held accountable for
that corruption," said FBI Director James
Comey, said at a news conference in Brooklyn
last Wednesday.
Sepp Blatter, the embattled leader of FIFA
announced Tuesday he will resign as president
of FIFA amid a major corruption scandal.

ustin Gatlin, the 33-year-old

American who has served two
doping bans in his sprinting career, ran a 9.75 in the 100 meters
at Romes Golden Gala track
meet on Wednesday, breaking
Usain Bolts record at the event,
setting the mark for fastest time
this year and becoming the fifthfastest man to ever run the race.
No sprinter had run as fast
as Gatlins 9.75 in three years,
when Bolts compatriot Yohan
Blake put up a 9.69. Blakes time
is tied for the second best in history, behind Bolts scintillating
9.58 from the 2009 world championships in Berlin.
Gatlin insisted he had not
yet turned his attention to his
battle with Bolt at the World

winning is to not think about it.
I do not think of beating Usain
Bolt because the championships
are not tomorrow - we still have
some time to come," he said.

he Women's World Cup is being held

June 6 - 5 July 5 in Canada and will be
the first FIFA tournament since Sepp Blatter
announced his intention to stand down as
president on Tuesday following corruption
allegations against members of the organisation.
Before his resignation speech Fifa had
said Blatter would attend the final in Vancouver on 5 July, but in a news conference on
Thursday officials said that was still to be
confirmed.
More than 920,000 tickets have already
been sold for the tournament, while the prize

fund is $15m (10m) with the winners earning $2m, up 50% from four years ago.
England's Welsh head coach Mark
Sampson, 32, is targeting a semi-final spot
and his side begin against much-fancied
France, who knocked them out at the quarter-final stage four years ago. Mexico and
Colombia are the other teams in Group F.
The Lionesses, ranked sixth in the world,
have never won a World Cup knockout fixture but Sampson, taking charge for his first
major tournament, has a great chance to
change that record.

Dr. Love claims death

ew Jersey-based reggae artist Chris

Dr. Love Crooks said he has been
receiving death threats and verbal harassments.
According to a press release from
the singer, the threats started several
weeks after he filed a police complaint
and took legal action against Jamaican
entertainer and former Digicel Raising

Brown Suga.
Crooks claimed that he and Campbell had several business transactions
over a 10-month period, which included
lending her some US$4,000 to cover the
staging of her birthday party, as well as
for medical and traveling expenses.
After four months and several efforts to settle the outstanding loans, Miss
Campbell failed to repay me and resorted
to anti-social behavior and more recently
death threats, Dr. Love told Street Hype.
I was only trying to help a fellow
entertainer who I met at a stage show in
New Jersey. We developed a very close
friendship and professional partnership
during the period. She was experiencing
financial difficulties in Jamaica and was
seeking my help. I trusted her and decided to assist in her career and personal

Dr. Love also claimed that during
the last 14 days, he and Miss Campbell
were in discussion to settle the outstanding payments and was therefore very surprised to be getting death threats from her
agents and associates who clearly identified themselves as persons instructed to
intimidate and harass me as I seek to collect my hard earned money.
The death threats were reported to

Last week at a private fund raiser in Manhattan for Drug Policy Alliance, New York

Maybe we should have told him to stuff it

Traits of a Good Father

12 STREET HYPE MAY 19-31, 2015

By Armando Pina,
Demand Media
ny man can be a father, but a good father
is a strong and influential figure over his
children. While male characteristics drive a
man to head a household, the ability to handle
authority and responsibility defines a good father.
Important traits of a good father encompass being a leader, a loving figure who meets
the needs of his children and an authority who
guides them accordingly. An ideal father
should be a beacon of support for his children,
nurturing his children to achieve physical and
emotional well-being.

Devotion
A good father should be an ideal worker
who balances devotion between his work and
family responsibility, according to Lindsey
Trimble of Stanfords Clayman Institute for
Gender Research. Devotion will play a determining role when he selects his jobs, as he
will strike a balance between his career and
family. Men often equate a good father to a
good provider. However, while a man ought
to provide financially for his family, physical
presence is equally important. For example,
whenever possible, a good dad seeks flexible
schedules in order to attend to his family.
Authoritative
In an article that discusses the meaning
of fatherhood, Frank Tanfer and Frank Mott
describe an ideal father as one who welds authority as the head of the family. A father is
an authority in a home and needs this authority to guide his children in a loving manner.
His role should not be adversarial, but of au-

thority over his children. He should be a partner who is sensitive and loving to his wife to
model a healthy relationship to his children.
He should not assume adversarial relationships but rather model leadership with his authority.

Role Model
Children develop most of their skills by
observing their parents. An ideal father should
be a role model in order to influence the lives
of his children, both within and outside the
home. Role modeling serves as a template to
guide the behavior of his children. It involves
the way he treats their mother, members of the
extended family and other people. Role modeling also involves the way he spends his
money, time and controls his emotions. He
models attitudes and behaviors that he would
like to see in his children. He acknowledges
his mistakes, disciplines the children and
spends time with them.

Nurturance
Nurturing is an important trait in a good father. Nurturing helps him foster his children's
education and healthy development. Nurturing activities of fathers and mothers may
overlap though they are not identical. While
a mother may play a large part in nurturing
children in a family, a fathers input is crucial
as it involves offering them useful guidance
into areas not covered by the mother. For example, in some families, while mothers train
children on hygiene and politeness, fathers
engage in activities that both stimulate and excite children to promote assertiveness.

Skincare Health and Sun Protection

elcome to summer, it is
finally here! With summer it is now time to focus on
covering up meaning adequate
skincare to protect the skin from damage
from UVA (ultra violet radiation) and UBV
(ultra violet B) radiation. Both types can lead
to skin cancer therefore the differences and
protection from the sun is of concern in the
summer months and all year around. UVA
causes premature aging, wrinkling and pigmentation changes; UVB is the main cause
of sunburns.
Interesting as it may seem, the misconception is that darker skin does not require
or need sun protection; however the sun impacts each person differently and as such
people from the Caribbean for example may
not see or feel there is a need to cover up or
apply sun screen in the summer months.
Avoid spending time in direct sunlight from
10:00am through the day to 4:00 or 5:00pm
is essential. It may appear the entire day is
lost however, avoiding the sun during this
crucial period can cut sun damage sizably
over a period of time. Use sun protection if
out in the sun during high noon as I would
aptly dub this period.
Use an umbrella (NO)
The average man or woman will not
walk the streets of New York City or any
major city with an open umbrella unless it is
raining. It may be okay in the Caribbean but
you would feel ridiculous in the city walking
around with an umbrella. Avoid embarrassment put the umbrella way!

Sunscreen: Many brands available, and

reasonably priced. Start shopping for store
brands and reasonably priced under $10.00.
Consider looking at sunscreen above SPF
25. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 with UVA
and UBV protection or higher if planning on
being in the sun for a long period of time.
Sun protection is widely available in pumps,
gels, sprays, creams etc. There is the new
sunscreen that is water activated something new for our swimmers etc. Clock yourself if outside more than 20 minutes and the
sun is warm on the skin. Find shade or apply
sunscreen.
Moisturizer: topical application of
hyaluronic acid. What is it, you may ask?
Hyaluronic acid helps to plump the skin.
Hyaluronic acid is been promoted as a
"fountain of youth.
Use moisturizers and apply generously
over face and neck during the summer
months.
Remain sun proof, boost the immune
system and enjoy eating foods rich in antioxidants.

njoy Berries as a group (blueberries,

raspberry, cranberries, strawberries, etc).
Apples as a group also rich in antioxidants. Beans as a group also a great source
of antioxidants. Looking good and staying
healthy, enjoy the summer in all ways.
*Please note, there are many foods rich in
antioxidants; however only a few were highlighted for this article.
Enjoy the summer, stay cool, safe and
healthy.

Robust Arrivals From USA

For Winter Tourist Season

By Anthony Turner
Contributing Writer
ourist arrival figures are just
in for the 2015 winter season,
and Jamaica's largest leisure market, the United States (US), has
registered overall growth of 9.1
per cent over the same period January to April of 2014.
The island attracted 445,000
stopover visitors from the US this
season, compared to the Januaryto-April period last year that
pulled in 408,000.
Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB)
executives as well as local hoteliers are upbeat about the strong
arrival figures.
All major regional markets
across the US are showing impressive growth, and one region,
the South, is showing a doubledigit increase.
"Jamaica has had a very positive performance in visitor arrivals this winter," tourism
director Paul Pennicook told The
Gleaner. "For the period January
to April 2015, stopover arrivals to
Jamaica are up 4.9 per cent from
all countries. Our number-one
market, the US, was up 9.1 per
cent over the same period last year
with all regions of the US showing an increase over previous

years, and we are anticipating

continued positive momentum,
particularly from the US market,
for the rest of the year," he added.
Aggressive Sales Strategies
During the January to April
period this year, the north-eastern
US was up 9.6 per cent; the Midwest, seven per cent; the south,
11.1 per cent; and the west, 7.6 per
cent.
Deputy Director of Tourism
Donnie Dawson, who heads the

US and Latin America sales team,

attributes the growth to a number
of aggressive sales and marketing
strategies that were implemented
last fall called 'Taking Back The
Streets'. That campaign involved
a renewed effort to reach out to retail travel agents.
All of the JTB's business development managers were required to pound the pavement,
more seminars and webinars were
conducted that connected with
thousands of agents nationally,
and there was a closer collaboration with airline partners to drive
business, among other measures.
"My very effective and hardworking team and I are pleased
with the recent growth, and our
strong efforts will continue to
maintain this momentum," Dawson said. "We promised to take
back the streets, and we did."
Dawson also pointed out that
two of his managers, Marcia Sinclair, district sales manager for the
North-east, and Mark McDermoth, business development manager in the Midwest, tied for first
place in Travel Agent Magazine's
Top Supplier Sales Representatives awards in the International
Tourist Board category.

City Run (MBCR), held in Jamaicas tourism capital, Montego
Bay, on May 3, 2015. The 5/10k charity road race, which raised
over $4 million Jamaican dollars for youth education in western
Jamaica, was staged by the MoBay City Run Organizing Committee in collaboration with the Jamaica Tourist Board, University

Woman Mistaken for Cougar

Wants a Big Cat, Not a Cub

18 STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER MAY 19-31, 2015

Dear Divine Diva:

'm a single woman in my late 30s and have
an 18-year-old daughter. When I am alone
or out with my girlfriends, I am constantly hit
on by younger men. My girlfriends say it's
because I don't look my age and that I should
feel flattered. Well, I am not a "cougar," and
I don't get turned on by younger men. I find
it offensive when I am approached by them.
While my single friends are being asked
on romantic dates by professional older men,
I'm being asked on dates by struggling college boys who have no car, no job and
cramped living quarters with three other
roommates. Give me a break!
It has reached the point that I just pretend to
be married. But it's starting to bother me that
mature men don't find me attractive. I have
stopped wanting to go out because of this.
What should I do? -PM, Brooklyn
Dear PM:
Where's your sense of humor? Instead of
telling these young men you're married, why
not tell them something closer to the truth -that you're old enough to be their mother and
ask if they happen to have a single uncle.
Seriously, if the only men who pay attention
to you are men in their early 20s, your problem may be the way you're packaging the
product you're trying to sell. Your makeup,
hairstyle and attire may send the wrong message, and that's why men in your target demographic aren't showing an interest. Talk to
your friends about this and see what they
have to offer.Always Divine Diva

Love of Woman's Life Can

Be Only a Part-Time Passion

Dear Divine Diva:

fell in love with a boy when I was 12,
deeply in love. We met at our county fair.
We grew up together and have remained
friends for 30 years. He married and had children, as did I. I am now divorced, but he's still
married.
Recently our friendship has grown into
something more. He wants our relationship to
continue, but he's afraid to leave his wife because of the kids. They have been together for
20 years.
What do I do? He's the love of my life.
Any time I have with him is better than none.
It's not that I don't know I deserve better, but
he is unhappy, and I am miserable without
him. What do I do? -- KM, Co-Op City

Dear Prisoner:
What you do depends upon your strength of
character and what you want out of life. If
you want to spend the foreseeable future as
this man's "side dish," then continue as you
have been, a "prisoner of passion" with not
much common sense. If you would like to
have a stable life and find a man who will
make you No. 1 in his life, then you will have
to call a halt to this affair and go through a
period of withdrawal -- the same as people
have to do with any addiction. It may not be
pleasant, but I recommend it.Always Divine Diva

Hunger vs Craving

Hunger
Usually occurs when you haven't eaten for
a few hours or more
Results in a rumbling stomach, headache
or feeling of weakness
Doesn't pass with time
Isn't just for one specific food
Can be satisfied by a healthy snack or meal

Craving
Are usually for comfort foods, such as
chocolate, sweets and fatty foods
Are often caused by negative feelings
Lead to eating that makes you feel good at
first, but then guilty
May be stronger when you're dieting, especially if you're giving up your favorite foods
Can occur even after you've recently eaten
Pass with time

How to deal with craving

Distract yourself: Try calling a friend, listening to music, taking a walk or bike ride,
reading, or writing.
If a negative feeling is causing your craving,
use Stress reduction techniques might include
taking a long hot bath, walking, relaxation
exercises, or yoga
Drink a glass of water before giving in to a
craving. Sometimes when you think you're
hungry, you're really just thirsty
Make lower calorie choices whenever possible

inning customer loyalty involves more than offering a
stellar product or service. Here's
how to keep your brand relevant.
When it comes to customer loyalty, perhaps no other space has it
as rough as hospitality. Here's his
advice on how any company can
stay relevant.
1. Embrace change-Human
beings crave novelty so it's vital
that you consistently offer customers some kind of newness. It
doesn't mean your product or service needs to change constantly; it
could mean something as easy as
regularly featuring fresh elements
on your website. Just look at the
doodles Google often plops onto
its homepage or the way Bing
showcases a new beautiful image
every day--people love being surprised. "Anyone who doesn't keep
moving with the times and presenting new ideas or a fresh face is
going to get stale and the brand

won't be interesting anymore," he

says.
2. Keep your message succinct-Like it or not, most people
have some kind of device within
arm's reach almost every waking
second, giving them the ability to
flit between apps or social networks at the tap of a finger. As a

result, inattention is a modern pandemic. "The message has to come

across simple and memorable
enough to engage a wide audience," he says.
3. Find and tell interesting
stories-The hotel Freid makes sure
that, in their newsletters, the properties tout examples of superb cus-

tomer service, such as the time a

concierge had a shoemaker repair
a broken high-heel shoe that a customer had asked him to throw
away. It's those kind of things that
you don't expect that are the kind
of stories you might want to tell.
4. Invest the time and
money required to stay in front
of your competition-Freid renovates Sanctuary Hotel's rooftop bar
seasonally with a new theme--an
expensive process, but one that
keeps customers coming back.
While the space originally was
going to be a summer-only venue,
it was so popular he enclosed it
with clear plastic and installed
heaters. Visit this winter and you'll
find a Moroccan motif featuring
imported rugs and lamps as well as
hookahs for customers to smoke.
If you don't keep things new, if
you don't innovate and keep people engaged, they're going to go on
to somebody else because everybody likes going to the new guy or
to what the new product is.
