2. Explain Viscosity and derive an expression for viscosity in-terms of Shear stress and
Shear strain.
3. Briefly explain the classification of fluids.
4. Calculate the dynamic viscosity of an oil ,which is used for lubrication between a
square plate of size 0.8mx0.8m and an inclined plane with angle of inclination 30 0 as
shown in Figure .the weight of the square plate is 300 N and it slides down the
inclined plane with a uniform velocity of 0.3 m/s .The thickness of the oil film is 1.5
mm. (Fig pg 9)

5. Determine the viscosity of a liquid having kinematic viscosity 6 stokes and specific
gravity 1.90.
6. Determine the specific gravity of a fluid having viscosity 0.05 poise and kinematic
viscosity 0.035 stokes.
7. The dynamic viscosity of oil, used for lubrication between a shaft and sleeve is 6
poise .the shaft if of diameter 0.4m and rotates at 190 rpm. Calculate the power lost in
the bearing for a sleeve length of 90mm.the thickness of the oil film is 1.5 mm (Fig pg
12)

8. The large plane surfaces are 2.4 cm apart. The space between the surfaces is filled
with glycerine. What force is required to drag a very thin plate of surface area 0.5
square metre between the two large plane surfaces at a speed of 0.6 m/s ,if :
i)
The thin plate is in the middle of the two plane surfaces
ii)
The thin plate is at a distance of 0.8 cm from one of the plane surfaces?
(Dynamic Viscosity of glycerine = 8.10 x 10-1N-s/m2).
9. A vertical cylinder of diameter 180 mm rotates concentrically inside another cylinder
181.2 mm.Both the cylinders are 300 mm high. The space between the cylinders is
filled with a liquid whose viscosity unknown. Determine the viscosity of the fluid if a
torque of 20 Nm is required to rotate the inner cylinder at 120 rpm.
10. Calculate the pressure exerted by 5 kg of nitrogen at a temperature of 100C, if the
volume is 0.4 m3.Molecular weight of nitrogen is 28.Assume ideal gas laws are
applicable.
11. A cylinder 0.6 m3 in volume contains air at 500C and 0.3 N/mm2 absolute pressure
.The air is compressed to 0.3 m3.Find
i) Pressure inside the cylinder assuming isothermal process
ii) Pressure inside the cylinder assuming adiabatic process (k=1.4)
12. Derive an expression pressure for

13. The capillary rise in the glass tube is not to exceed 0.2 mm of water .Determine its
minimum size, given that the surface tension for water in contact with air 0.725 N/m.
14. Calculate the capillary rise in a glass tube of 2.5 m diameter when immersed
vertically in Water and Mercury.
Take surface tension = 0.0725 N/m for water and = 0.52 N/m for mercury in
contact with air. The specific gravity for mercury is given as 13.6 and angle of contact
1300.

Fluid Dynamics: Introduction equation of motion, Eulers equation of motion, Bernoullis
equation from first principles and also from Eulers equation, limitations of Bernoullis
equation.

1. Mention the Equations of motion.


2. Derive Momentum equation or Eulers Equation of Motion.
3. Derive Bernoullis Equation of Energy equation from Momentum equation.
4. Derive impulse momentum equation.
5. Water is flowing through a pipe 5 cm diameter under a pressure of 29.43 N/cm2 and
with mean velocity of 2.0 m/s .find the total head of total energy per unit weight of
the water at a cross-section, which is 5m above the datum line.
6. Water is flowing through a pipe through a pipe having diameter 300 mm and 200 mm
at the bottom and upper end respectively .The intensity of pressure at the bottom end
is 24.525 N/cm2 and the pressure at the upper end is 9.81N/cm2.Determine the
difference in datum head if the rate of flow through pipe is 40lt/s.
7. A conical tube of length 2.0m is fixed vertically with its smaller end upwards .The
velocity of flow at the smaller end is 5 m/s, While at the lower end it is 2m/s .the
pressure head at the smaller end is 2.5 m of liquid .The loss of head in the tube is

lower end repectively.Determine the pressure head at the lower end ,if the flow takes
place in the downward direction.
8. Derive an expression for Forces in x and y directions for a fluid flowing in a pipebend.
9. A 450 reducing bend pipe is connected in a pipe line, the diameters at the inlet and
outlet of the bend being 600 mm and 300 mm respectively. Find the force exerted by
water on the bend if the intensity of pressure at inlet to bend is 8.829N/cm2 and rate of
flow water is 600 lt/s.(Pg 237)

10. 250lts/s of water is flowing in a pipe having a diameter of 300 mm.If the pipe is bent
by 1350 (That is change from initial to final direction is 1350), find the magnitude and
direction of the resultant force on the bend. The pressure of water flowing is 39.24
N/cm2.(pg 238)

11. A pipe of 300 mm diameter conveying 0.3 m3/s of water has a right angled bend in a
horizontal plane .Find the resultant force exerted on the bend if the pressure at inlet
and outlet of the bend are 24.525 N/cm2 and 23.544 N/cm2.(pg 243)

12. A nozzle of diameter 20mm is fitted to pipe of diameter 40 mm. Find the force
exerted by the nozzle on the water which is flowing through the pipe at the pipe at the
rate of 1.2m2/minute.(pg 244)

13. Derive torque equation using moment of momentum equation for rotating fluid flow.
