Half-time pep talk for the BHSC Juniors Under 7 Lions team under
lights at Surfside
Record numbers of Australians are

taking up football, the world game,
with an estimated 1.97 million
players participating this year.
The kids of Barwon Heads have certainly found out for
themselves how much fun football is to play...a record
number of 154 local kids have signed on for training
this year with the Barwon Heads Junior Soccer Club at
the Village Park. Many of these future football stars
also participate in MiniRoos matches against other
Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast teams each
Sunday morning, with BHSC Juniors fielding teams in
Under 7s, Under 9s, Under 11s and Under 12s
competitions, with both boys and girls involved.
Our hardworking organisers, James Ramage and
Jon Phillips, make it all possible, along with the
support and encouragement of all the parents,
sponsors and the community.
As David Gallop, CEO of the Football Federation of

Australia, points out, MiniRoos is specifically designed for
kids; it is all about having fun, learning new skills and making
life-long friends in a team environment.
The game of football is safe, simple and skillful for boys and
girls to play, and it's also inclusive, accessible and
multicultural just some of the reasons why more Australians
are signing up to play football than any other mass
participation sport.
Barwon Heads' turn to host the MiniRoos hub

matches at Village Park happened on 24 and
31 May.
Stay tuned for a wrap-up of the two Hubs, along with some
player profiles featuring our talented juniors, in future
editions of Talking Heads. With such interest and
enthusiasm being shown from the kids, it will only be a
matter of time before we will be seeing a home-grown
Barwon Heads superstar playing in the Socceroos or
Matildas!

comes to the aid of Nepalese earth-quake victims.

We also support the Uniting and Catholic churches of
Barwon Heads, many of whom make up our volunteer
staff.
However, the donations of which we are

especially pleased are the ones which support
local groups run by volunteers.
GIVING
It is said that Giving is better than

receiving.
We Op Shop volunteers are all very happy to give the
time and effort we put into keeping up with Op Shop
chores. But twice a year, we have the added joy of being
able to give money to the church and community.
In May we gave away a record $80,000.
Because we are an Anglican Op Shop, we give money to

support the work of the Anglican Church here and in
Ocean Grove. Then an ancillary amount was put aside
for other Christian activities, such as the Scripture
Union Family Mission, whose young workers provide
school holiday activities during the longer summer
holidays. Another worthy cause is that of the Christian
Blind Mission, which does vital work in Africa, but also

Bluff, cater for all ages, but it is particularly good that we
give to younger people, Scouts, Guides, and the huge
group of kids who now play Soccer.
I am also delighted that we give $1000 each to a
wonderful program to support siblings of those with a
disability, and to the Riding for the Disabled group.
Details of these, and donations to the usual groups,
Fire Brigades and Surf Clubs, etc., will be displayed
for you to see as soon as we can do so.
We are SO fortunate that members of the Ocean

Grove Mens Shed have recently assisted Don
Everitt in the building of new shelving for the BookRoom. Don and John Brady are our chief helpers in
taking away unsold items and rubbish.
John takes very large quantities of unsold goods of
many varieties across to the Donations in Kind
organisation run by the Rotary Clubs.
Their shipping containers take goods to many third
world countries.
To support their costs, we have given them $2000, as
each container costs so much to ship away. It had been
suggested that possibly some members from groups of

our recipients could make themselves available to do
some of the chores we find difficult.
Some years ago, some members of the Connewarre
Fire Brigade took rubbish away for us, and a Scout
leader also helped.
Fortunately, Don copes with most if this chore,

but any extra help would be appreciated if
offered.
In all this giving, we are so aware that without the
donations of clothes, books and all kinds of other goods,
we would not be giving any money away.
The volunteers who work in the Sorting Room would
especially like to thank those who put descriptions on
bags and boxes, as this does make their job easier.
I would like to thank those who remember that very
heavy boxes and bags really strain our ageing bodies.
At present I am also recognising that some rubbish bags
sold currently are not as strong as ones previously
available. I am often so grateful that no one else is
around when I pick up a bag that disintegrates, and
spews clothes in all directions! (The language I use is
NOT repeatable.) As winter weather turns colder and
wetter, please make sure that donations are left well
under our veranda, and thanks you all once again for
making our work so worthwhile. Please come and buy
extra winter woollies as I think we will all need them
soon.

Our May concert certainly was

a spectacular success!
Matthew Fagan provided us with
a most impressive virtuoso guitar
recital including Spanish
Classical & Flamenco styles &
impressive original arrangements & modern
interpretations for his 10 stringed guitar. His
performance was modelled on the Lute & included Celtic
tunes. He chose highlights as Homage to his Ancestors
as he followed in the footsteps of his Grandfather, Milton
Parkes (a celebrated concert pianist) & his Great Uncle,
Cecil Parkes (a concert violinist) who toured with
Australian Opera legend Dame Nellie Melba throughout

USA in the early 20th century! Matthew has toured with
international celebrities such as Natalie Cole, The
Original Buena Vista Social Club, Billy Connelly, Shirley
Bassey & Michael Crawford & he tours regularly to USA!
His renowned virtuosity & versatility on guitar has
always surprised audiences as his repertoire spans
many eras & cultures. Some of the highlights he
performed for us included the Flight of the Bumble Bee
by Rimsky Korsakov, Capriceby Paganini, Winter
from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi & baroque lute
music by JS Bach. Some classical South American
music followed with a Prelude first written by Villa Lobos
for Andre Segovia (who famously re-introduced the

classical guitar to the world!) & between 1920 & 1940
Antonio Lauro composed wonderful Venezuelan
waltzes etc. Matthew included a medley of One Note
Samba & The Girl from Barwon Heads (Ipanima!)
Afternoon tea on the church porch in the lovely sunshine
was quite a success! And we did appreciate the strong
support for our monthly concert!
Our next concert will be held at The Anglican Church on
Sunday 14th June at 2.30pm with the return of violinist
Julien Dupont & his trio. Donations: Friends/Members:
$10; Visitors: $15. Everyone is welcome to stay for
afternoon tea following the concert.

Bellarine Kids are holding their forth Family
Fun and Market Day at the Bellarine Indoor
Aquatic and Sports Centre, Shell Road, Ocean
Grove, on Sunday June 28th. The Bellarine
Kids Family Fun and Market will be a
celebration of Bellarine's child friendly
services and businesses, with a day of great
activities planned for the whole family to enjoy.
Showcasing many of the best the Bellarine has to
offer for children and families, the day will be filled
with free children's activities, demonstrations and
stalls. The entry cost is $4 per child and includes
face painting, jumping castles, craft, bike
demonstrations, giant games, music, dance, hand
drumming and sport sessions. As well as activities
from within many stall spaces, including the school
holiday programs', daycare centres, family
services, as well as information from local
community groups including The Ocean Grove
Scout Group, the Toy Library, Playgroups', health
and well being professionals, support services and
businesses, and a lovely range of items and
services to purchase.

Energy for Life

Hi all, cold enough for you yet?
Well it is winter, so grin and bear it or get out and
get moving. Nothing gets you warmer than a very
brisk walk, rugged up and out there!!
One thing to keep in mind is even though its cold,
keep your water intake up at 2 litres a day , just as in
summer.
As well as water for fat loss and to keep the body
functioning as it should, remember to eat properly
and regularly. To build lean muscle and lose fat,
90% of your daily food intake should consist of
whole, unprocessed foods- anything that doesn't
come out of a box. Eat lean meat, fish, chicken,
vegetables, eggs and fruit....and make sure you
have breakfast, as it kick starts the metabolism.
The body uses 1200 calories just to function and
more if you're especially active, so don't starve it or
it will go into famine mode, and when you do eat it
will store what it can as fat.
If you don't eat consistently you also tend to eat
more than you need when you finally do because
you are overly hungry. Eating every 3-31/2 hours is
as long as it takes most meals to be digested, and
the next small HEALTHY meal/snack will again
kick start the metabolism. If you don't feel like a lot
to eat try healthy snacks like fruit and yoghurt,
nuts, cottage cheese and vegetables.
To turn your body into a fat-fighting machine

and burn off stubborn fat, try eating 6 small meals
of whole foods a day. This will stabilize insulin
levels which helps increase energy, prevents
hunger cramps so you don't binge on the wrong
food and provides the body with a steady flow of
nutrients to repair and rebuild muscle tissue after
any workouts.
I have a client who by introducing breakfast,
morning and afternoon snacks of yoghurt and
fresh fruit, cutting out soft drinks and the
occasional potato chips and drinking 2 litres of
water lost 7kgs in 3 weeks. So try it and see how
you go!

Abbott Federal Government allowing the Geelong Star (the Dirk Dirk re-named) supertrawler to fish in the pelargic regions in our southern waters.
This will devastate our fishing industry and

So, I first noticed her on the kitchen blind 2 weeks

ago.
With 8 hairy legs and eyes that seem to follow
wherever you go, she was smaller than your average
kitchen spider. No bigger than a 5 cent piece when
she curled into herself. And she did that often.
Curl into herself that is.
You would too in a loud house like ours.
She didn't move at first. At least, not from which I
could see. She sat so still on the blind. Quietly, in her 8
legged hairiness until the first of my smalls

And with a petrified voice screamed, Huntsman!
The word itself conjured up so much panic.
Even I ducked my head to take cover. To protect
myself from this fearful description, from this terrible
beast, that apparently had recently invaded our
home.
But then I didn't reach for the tupperware bowl and
scoop her outside. Nor did I reach for the Echo to
swipe her into oblivion. I watched her. We all watched
her. And as we watched, she started to uncurl. And
as she started to uncurl, she started to open. She
started to move. She started to dance. Sideways.
And with a delicate dance of 8 legged hairiness, she
began moving through our kitchen. And to our dining room.
And even sometimes to the lounge. Always staying high.
Always moving sideways. As graceful as any young spider
could be.
As open and beautiful as any creature could be.
She became a great topic of table talk.
At breakfast we'd all look for where she'd been
sleeping. At dinner, we'd watch how she could peek
from behind the blue-tacked drawings on the wall.
Over school readers with milo, we'd see her sideways
dance across her favourite place on top of the
kitchen blind. Watching us. Listening to us. Being one of
us.
Yesterday, the condensation on the morning window
promised of the sun which was to come. With the
season journeying inwards towards winter, we all came
to the breakfast table in dressing gowns.
To find her gone.
Not on the blind. Not behind the blue-tacked pictures.
Not sideways dancing along the high wall. It felt oddly
lonely. I wondered why she left. But pressing that to
the back of my mind, we packed up and walked
outside towards school.
When we got outside, it was the sun that bites. A sun
with no warmth made my fingers hurt. The morning
held it's fog, and was thick with salty dew. We
marvelled at watching our breath. Marvelled at
seeing our footprints shiny on the grass.
Until the first of my smalls noticed her work. The work
of our spider that is. Hanging between the leaves of
the rosemary. Holding diamond sparkles in the dew.
And with a voice filled with awe, Our huntsman.

The natural world continually begs to take our breath

away. In befriending our fear, what we first thought
gross and hairy became an object of exquisite beauty.
We could see the delicate balance between what our
spider was and what our spider could be. The web she
had woven in her grace was not only through the leaves
of the rosemary, but also the naked branches of the
nectarine next to it. In weaving herself through the
trees, she had woven her grace into our hearts. She
had woven her love through us dancing sideways. She
had woven her simple being into our lives.
We marvelled at the strings of fine thread, as
smooth as the finest lace. My smalls asked me, Will
our huntsman ever come back inside?
I really don't know, but I hope so.
Because I love to dance.

A Winters Tale
Just a casual glance out the window tells us that
summer couldn't be further away.
All that remains of the last summer are faint
memories, maybe some regrets and a flimsy bank
balance. All that and pockets of rubbish that
demonstrate the degradability of plastics in less
than 500 years.
THE YOGA SUTRAS OF

PATANJALI
(written in the first millennium) are a set of guidelines
designed to reinforce a healthy

Yoga.
Last month I mentioned the first
limb of Yoga the Yamas.
The five Yamas are a set of
guidelines to teach us to direct
our energy or our thoughts in a
positive manner.

1) SAUCA means Purity.

This Niyama instructs us to be pure of thought and body.
This means we need to be sure we exist in a 'clean'
environment. Healthy, pure thoughts create a healthy
flow of prana (life force). If we are filling our bodies with
food that doesn't benefit our health, our flow of prana also
suffers. And if we are in an environment that creates
unease in the emotional and/or physical body; again the
flow of prana is impeded.
2) SANTOSHA means Contentment.
Learning to be satisfied with what we already have (or
don't have) and where we are in our life is a great thing!
Being content with our environment and knowing things
are just as they should BE. We teach ourselves to be
content with the blessings and challenges that life
presents.
3) TAPAS means Intensity/Heat.
The teaching of Tapas is that whilst we may aim to
practise peace and acceptance on our path, we still need
to have passion! Passion creates fire and keeps our

energy from stagnating. Just as it is not good to be too
fiery, it is not good to be too docile. It is necessary to stoke
the 'fire in our belly' so that we can achieve balance
between the heat of our passion and the coolness of our
harmony.
4) SVADYHYAYA means Study of
the Self and Scripture. This Niyama
instructs to study the writings of
Patanjali and learn about the
relationship of the form (our human
body) with the soul and the universe
as a whole. When presented with a
positive or negative experience we
can take a step back and observe
our behaviour when acting and
reacting also noting the effects our
behaviour has on our environment.
We have the opportunity to ponder on whether we need
to moderate our behaviours for the future.
5) ISVARA PRANIDHANA means Surrender.
The lesson is to approach life with faith. Allowing
ourselves to be vulnerable and trust in the higher good; to
have an open heart with no fear. When we learn to believe
in divine timing and accept everything as an opportunity
to learn or grow we are one step closer to enlightenment.
We apply the Niyamas to our physical Yoga practice by
practising Sauca being pure in our thoughts towards
ourselves and how we nurture our bodies; Santosha
being content with where our poses take us; Tapas approaching our yoga with passion and creating heat in
the body to protect from injury; Svadhyaya observing our
reactions in certain poses and Isvara Pranidhana
surrendering into the poses to allow the body to soften
and stretch trusting that everything is as it should BE.....

Talking food...
CORIANDER PESTOBLISSTO!
At the farmers market recently, I bought a very large bunch of fresh coriander (cilantro)
which was variously sprinkled over curry on dollops of thick yoghurt, layered with thinly
sliced roasted pumpkin on rye bread with pitted black olives & home made mayo, blended into
freshly made pestowith lots to spare.
For the pesto, I used bunch well washed herb to 2 tbs olive oil, cup blanched almonds, 1
large clove garlic, 50 gms pecorino cheese (or permesan), juice of 1 lemon, 1 tbs sherry (or
white wine) vinegar, tsp ground white pepperall into the blender then pulse until it
starts to come togetherusing extra V olive oil, blend into the
consistancy of thick creampour into sterilised jar and seal with a
slick of olive oil on top to cover.
The simple pasta above is cooked, warm org. soba noodles, coriander
pesto, chopped black tomatoes & shaved pecorino with a grind of black
pepper. (Vegan option - omit cheese and add 50gms org. firm tofu).
More ways to serve this pesto...top baked potato, with fish & chips, on a
roasted pumpkin pizza, in a salad sandwich or roll, on minestrone (or

I love cheese. It intensified when I moved to France.
It felt like my cheese shop lady was my dealer
because every week I'd say, "I need this cheese, I
need that cheese", and she'd cut me enough for the

This one was epic as it contains a whole bunch of cooked and chopped
silverbeet...once youve prepared the silverbeet, the rest is easy so, using scissors,
cut the leaves off then chop them up roughly...wash & rinse then place in a heavy
pan and sweat on med for 10 mins or until silverbeet has collapsed...drain in a
collander with a plate to weigh it down then press out all the water you
can...meanwhile, finely, chop 2 shallots, 1 clove garlic and fry in 1 tbs olive oil until
soft...cool...in a bowl mix shallot mix, shredded silverbeet, cup shredded
mozarella, 1/2 tsp dill leaves, sea salt & white pepper to taste...beat 4 eggs lightly

then mix into quiche...well butter a pie
dish and pour in quiche mix...top with
halved cherry tomatoes, a good
sprinkle of shredded mozarella and a
few more dill leaves...bake at 180c

Freezing Weather
Now we are heading

into the Winter months
it's time to take a
serious look at the
wonderful world of
freezing.
You know that feeling when you

just need a little something
sweet after dinner?
Make these little bursts of bliss...
12 pitted medjool dates
1 tbs almond meal
1 tbs organic cacao powder
2 tbs dessicated coconut
1 tbs toasted brown rice
1 tbs toasted sesame seeds
1 tbs puffed rice
1 tbs honey
1 tbs coconut oil...
Soak dates in hot water for 15 minutes and heat
honey & coconut oil in a small saucepan...toast
sesame seeds in a dry pan until a little
golden...mix dry ingredients & sesame seeds
together. With a fork...process dates, oil & honey
on pulse until a puree then mix through dry
ingredients until it comes together...let sit for 10
minutes then, using wet hands, take tsp sized
balls of mix and toss in toasted shredded
coconut or ground almonds...store in airtight
container in the fridge then eat with a smile G
Now don't get me wrong.

Fresh is still best but as an option freezing not only
keeps our produce in a state of arctic limbo but it is
extremely economical, saves time and
dramatically reduces wastage.
You would be astounded by the number of
freezable foods at hand and the creative dishes
you can produce from your freezer.
Here is a list of tried and

true products which can
be frozen.

Grated cheese
Milk and Yoghurt
Soups Stocks and Casseroles Pasta
Sauces Vegetables Meat and Fish

A great idea to reduce wastage is when
you think your fresh herbs are approaching
their use by date, chop them finely on a
chopping board and sprinkle them into ice
cube trays.
Fill the trays with water and freeze.
Next time you're preparing a dish which requires
herbs just drop a herb ice cube into the mix whilst
cooking.
Another idea is when your bananas are starting to
look a bit overripe, peel them and slice into 1-2 inch
pieces. Place on wax paper lined pan and put in
freezer then transfer into freezer safe bags when
frozen. They can then be converted into rich
creamy smoothies or vegan banana icecream
when you feel like a banana fix.
So next time you look at the produce lying languidly
around your fridge or pantry think about freezing it
for a rainy day.

Before baking
I picked up a copy of Dish

magazine last week and found this
little gem for baked eggplants.
Just oil a lasagne dish then halve 4 medium eggplants...cut side
down, cut 4 slices in each piece...place face down in dish then slice 4
rima tomatoes into 4 slices and finely slice 2 cloves of garlic and
place tomato & garlic between eggplant slices...in a jar, make a
dressing of 1/4 cup olive oil, 2 tbs red wine vinegar and 2 tbs honey
and shake well until combined...drizzle slowly over eggplants
making sure dressing goes in between slices...sprinkle with lemon
thyme leaves...cover with foil and bake at 180c about 45 minutes,
basting with juices every 15 minutes...keep warm...top with:
A small handful parsley, 2 tbs roasted pine-nuts,2 tbs rinsed capers,
zest of one lemon and 1 tsp lemon thyme leaves & 2 sliced spring
onions...all roughly chopped together and seasoned...serve
eggplant with dollops of thick, plain yoghurt scattered with topping.
This was amazing served with slow cooked lamb rump and again
with lemon & black pepper grilled chicken thighs and Im thinking it
would also be good with grilled & spiced quail G

Responding to call outs
In the past month alone the Barwon Heads Fire

Brigade has responded to XX call outs, bringing our
total for the year to XX. In the past weekend alone
(16 & 17 May) we were called to three incidents as
diverse as a transformer on a power pole exploding
in the early hours of the morning, a small fire set
alight just behind the Barwon Heads Bowls Club in
the scrub at midday and to assist the Connewarre
Fire Brigade.
In all situations we are the first response for 000,
however there are times when we need to call on
additional support, such as Powercor or the Police.
As CFA members we use each opportunity to
reinforce the key components of our training and to
teach less experienced members so their skills

continue to improve. We hold training sessions
every Tuesday night for all members and recently
ran a practical, hands on session on how to put out
car fires using a 'hot fire' car prop. Photographs and
a short video of the session are on our Facebook
page.
We will soon be undertaking training in using a
defibrillator, a device used in assisting first aid to
people experiencing cardiac arrest or arrhythmia.
The defibrillator was purchased thanks to the
generous donation from the Barwon Heads
Community Bank. This will be a very useful piece
of equipment and we are very grateful to Chris Lacy
and his team for their efforts.
Training is core to being a member of the CFA all
members must pass a minimum skills practical and

theory test before being allowed onto a fire ground.
These skills are refreshed at the beginning of each
summer, or fire season, and additional courses are
held throughout the year to build on that base.

Barwon Heads Community Garden
Winter plantings:
Plotholders have been busy preparing their soil and
enthusiastically planting a variety of winter seedlings. It is
always exciting to see the tiny leaves of broad beans
poking through heads through the soil hopefully I will get
a good harvest this year again to make some of my
favourite recipes. Sowings of caulis, broccoli, cabbage,
beetroot and garlic are all looking really healthy I will give
them some liquid fertilizer to assist them on their way.
Two of our members, John and Rob, recently sowed
many packets of seeds in the communal area and we will
have an abundance of many varieties of vegetables to
share with members. The poly house is a great asset in
helping to give us a good supply of new seedlings at a
very low cost. All members are welcome to use the house
to grow their own seedlings please remember to label
your containers with your name.
Compost and its making:
We had a successful Compost Making Workshop with

Steve Findlay with 17 keen gardeners attending. Steve
recommends chopping all green waste with a motor
mower to help the breakdown of the material. Materials
that are high in nitrogen are typically moist, green
materials, such as lawn/grass clippings, fruit and
vegetable scraps, animal manure and green leafy
materials that rot down very quickly are ideal. Rock
dust: Steve also recommends adding a couple of
handfuls of rock dust to the soil when preparing your
garden beds. Rock dust is a unique mineral fertilizer
which will help to improve your soil. It is available from
firms that sell garden soils, gravel etc.

also made some quince paste and pickled some figs
(haven't yet tried them but hopefully they will be nice).
Now to make some Pickled Pears a recipe I discovered
last year and very easy. They are great to serve with
cheese for a savoury snack. You may like to try it whilst
pears are available at a very reasonable price.

Pickled Pear Recipe:
1 kg pears, 1 sprig rosemary, 2 and a third cups cider

vinegar, 1 and three quarter cups sugar, 1 teaspoon
allspice berries, 1 cinnamon stick, 2 cm. piece ginger root
- sliced thinly, 4 strips lemon rind.

Word about the Hood
In mid May, several Surfcoast &

Bellarine hooded plover
volunteers, land managers &
agency staff joined 120 people
from across the southern and
eastern coasts of Australia to
attend the 5th National Beachnesting Birds Conference at
the Point Nepean National
Park.
From Esperance to Merimbula, volunteers,
land managers, researchers and
Government agency representatives
gathered to hear of the latest research
developments for beach-nesting birds and
to participate in a Question & Answer
session with an expert panel. Afternoon
field trips in a stunning Mornington
Peninsula setting created ideal
opportunities to network.
On the second day, workshops on

photography, bird ID, advocacy and plant
ID spread out amongst the Commanders
house and grounds of the Quarantine
Station at Point Nepean were highly
engaging. Participants then ate gourmet
DIY burgers on the lawn overlooking the
bay, sitting in the warm Autumn sun.
After a group photo, participants split into
groups to head to field trips at the Coolart
wetlands, the ocean beach at St Andrews or
the rocky coves at Koonya.
On the Sunday, regional coordinators went on
to attend a recovery meeting and identified
key gaps in the delivery of the BirdLife
Australia Beach-nesting Birds program (e.g.
lack of top down support), and discussed
ideas for improving communications,
volunteer engagement and data collection.
The conference was very well organised and
has bolstered our enthusiasm to keep helping
our beloved local hoodies.

Growing cities big problems HEYWARD CONSTRUCTIONS P/L

Geelong is advancing towards Barwon Heads at a
rapid rate. However discouraged we all feel about the
Armstrong Creek suburb and the adjoining industrial
estates that will stretch from Marshall to the Airport,
nothing can now be done to halt this amazing
floodplain development. Geelongs population will
double and our road will become one of the busiest
regional roads in the country.
So what forward planning has been done for road
links? Nobody is saying, but its obvious we will soon
need a four-lane highway from Barwon Heads to
Geelong. You might even have thought that Council
and Vicroads would be building that road right now to
forestall the delays that have already started to cause
frustration.
And how about rail travel to Melbourne? What we
need can be expressed very simply a modern highspeed electrified service from Torquay to Southern
Cross.
This would be a dual line track, of course, which
means widening the Geelong tunnel which presently
causes untold inconvenience and restriction to the
service. All trains would run all the way, ending the
absurdity of a current timetable with three terminations
Geelong, Geelong South, and Marshall. Multistorey car parks would be built at Geelong, South
Geelong, Marshall and Torquay. Right now, our
service cant meet the current demand because the
parking is overwhelmed every morning.
Imagine how different future rail travel could be from
what we endure today the busiest, the most
overcrowded, and the most regularly late-running
regional train service in Australia. We would have
what a city like Geelong deserves, a modern public
transport link that would greatly reduce travelling times
and get thousands of cars off the highway.
Unfortunately, we all know that this is not going to
happen. Overcrowding on the trains to Melbourne will
get worse, and the soon-to-be-built Tarneit Link will
almost certainly exacerbate the chronic problem of

late running. This new line may remove the Newport

and Footscray bottlenecks, and improve the lot of
Wyndham residents, but surely will make our trip to
Melbourne even slower.

Many of us travel overseas occasionally and get the

opportunity to experience the way public transport is
offered elsewhere. Its often said, quite correctly, that

Europe or Asias compact equivalents, but Geelong is
not that different from many overseas provincial cities
in terms of area and population.
Needless to say, the tram routes interconnect with

schools, shopping centres, universities, the train
station, the airport and so on. The frequency of service
trams every 3-5 minutes is such that theres no
need for timetables. And the town-planners didnt stop
with a tram service. They have banished all cars and
traffic from a substantial part of the city centre, in

Recently, we spent a day or two in Montpellier, the 8th Have

News from the Beaches and Coastal Environs
Barwon Coast is a
Committee of
Management appointed
by the State Government
with responsibility for
the management of 13km
of coastal crown land from 7W
Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks,
Barwon Heads covering our beautiful
beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon
Heads and 13thBeach.
Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.
COASTAL EROSION
The last week or so has seen some substantial impacts
on our coastline and the assets managed by Barwon
Coast.
The Barwon Heads Promenade and timber sea wall
came under serious attack from high tides and strong
wave action with portions of the wall planking lost or
damaged resulting in loss of material from under the
concrete promenade. Consequently a section of the
promenade has been closed in the interest of public
safety while remediation options are investigated.
The large staircase beach access at 31W came under
significant impacts with Barwon Coast staff acting
promptly to strengthen and extend the bottom landing
and flight of stairs; saving what could have been a very
expensive replacement cost.

fencing were almost lost. Local
contractors and Barwon Coast staff have worked to reestablish the fencing that helps protect our fragile dune
systems from human impacts.
Barwon Coast will continue to monitor and respond to
threats caused by storm surge events. Our local
community can help by reporting any problems they
observe.
RECYLING CURTAINS TO SHOPPING BAGS
Replacing your curtains or have some odd bits of fabric
around you're not sure what to do with, now it can all go
towards a very worthwhile project. As part of our
commitment to the Let Our Sea Be Plastic Bag Free
community project, we are seeking old curtains or left
over fabrics for groups to assist with the making of

reusable shopping bags. The distribution of these free
bags will minimise the amount of plastic bags entering
our natural environments such as the Barwon estuary
and the ocean. So if you are replacing your curtains, or a
curtain company with old curtains or fabrics and don't
know what to do with it, please donate to this cause. The

BARWON ESTUARY WALK IMPROVING

RESILIENCE
As many will know the estuary walk along the river bank
from the Barwon Heads Bridge to the Ocean Grove Golf
Course is one of the great local walks. In recent times a
section of the walk at the bridge end has come under
increasing impacts from erosion.
Over the last few years maintenance of this section of
path has required continually renourishment of the bank
with sand after significant flood or tide surge events.
To reduce this continuing maintenance cost and build
resilience into this section of path Barwon Coast is
constructing a 80 metre length of boardwalk and access
stairs down to the river. Last week a pile driver installed
the required piles and in coming weeks Barwon Coast
staff will construct the boardwalk.

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

Every off season there is a time when
the issues of cricket are just so buried
that it's difficult to find anything the
write about.
As usual at this time of the year there is a huge amount
of work being done behind the scenes to make the
transition to the actual playing of the game in early
October look as seamless as any other season.
Recruiting of players, junior coaches and new
committee members is well under way.
On a positive note, we've advertised on Facebook
and Team app for junior coaches for next season. In
Under 11's - two dads have said they are happy to
take over under 11 sides and we'll be searching for a
third if numbers are high and we have a third team.
The Under 13's will be coached by Ash Muir while in
Under 15's Ash's batting partner Matt High has put his
hand up.
We are looking for assistance for Matt to help him out

where his work commitments might clash with this
position.
The Under 17's is up in the air at the moment as some of
the boys have graduated to senior cricket next season
and the parents that were helping out have moved on too.
What we need is a person who can dedicate an hour on a
Thursday night 5pm 6pm on the Harry Blyth field or in the
nets to train and develop these boys, the ones that aspire
to play senior cricket then usually stay for senior training.
Match day Saturday mornings will require roughly an 8:30
start until about 11:45 am. These are a wonderful group of
lads and they have excellent parents who are really good
helpers in this group.
The club is extremely proud of support we give our
juniors and the level of support that we get from them
and their families in return. We place massive
importance in their development and we hold them all in
very high regard. As pointed out last season, most of the
players who played in the 2013-14 premiership in A

Grade were either former or current juniors at the time.
The future of any club is in the junior players and their
families and our success in recent seasons has been a
result of high standards shown by the juniors.
If you have any interest in any of the positions described
above then please let us know.
The next important date in cricket is the AGM which will
be held at the Barwon Grove Golf Club rooms AKA the
Tin Shed at about 7pm on July 31st which is a Friday.
Last year we had a great turn out and some really good
discussion around the issues of the club at the time.
All members are welcome.

Already into June, as you wonder where half the year has gone.
The AGM has come and gone for another year and we welcome some new faces and
some not so new to the various positions within the Club.
The winter social bowls has gotten off to an excellent start with strong support again
from neighbouring club, lets just hope mother nature plays her part.
With last pennant season long gone and the new one still a long way off, its time to
reflect on whats happened in the last year.
Many highlights and low lights come to mind.
The day a very high ranking club official put his first 2 bowls down on the wrong
bias. Seems with the assistance of a few wines he put new stickers on his bowls the
night before, only to find they were on back to front.
Margarets bowl of the year to win mixed pairs championship.

A day of bowls at Drumconda started to sound like the old VFA days.
Very senior female official hoisted the Australian flag upside down.
The day two elderly male

bowlers were trying to lift a very
big lady who had fallen. Was
never going to happen.
There are many more highlights,
but defamation laws deem they
remain untold.

Recent wonderful donations from the Barwon

Heads Kindergarten and AusNet Services have
been a highlight as they are going to enable us to
purchase some new reversible playing singlets for
our teams. We have so many teams now that
often we play against each other. This is very
confusing obviously as everyone is wearing the
same colour! Now one team will just reverse their
singlet to an opposite colour and away they go.
Fantastic. It will also make our club very
identifiable and Im sure boost our membership
even further.
We will be doing a special presentation for the very
generous Barwon Heads Kindergarten donation
so will post some photos of this on our Barwon
Heads Seagulls Basketball Club Facebook page.
Finally, we are very pleased to announce the
Barwon Heads Community Bendigo Bank as our
sponsor for our annual presentation day which is
on the 12th September. More details for this fun

The Under 16's had a close
game against Modda at Modda.
With not much separating the
sides all day the 22 point margin
at the end was the biggest
margin of the day, well done boys. Best players: R.
Griffiths, L. Reekie, B. Mazouris, M. Gumley, N.
McMahon & N. Sutton.
Next up they tackled Drysdale at home and with a 5 goal
first quarter this set up a 32 point win. Best players: Z.
Copland, Z. Walter, L. Hooper, J. Davis, I. Carpenter,
N. Sutton. May 16th saw them travel to Bell Park, a trip
Sam and his boy's would prefer to forget about. Not one
of their better days they were outplayed by a stronger
opposition. Best players: F. Guina-Stannard, L.
Reekie, R.Griffiths, N. Sutton, N. McMahon & D.
Booth. With 3 wins and 3 losses we are sitting second
on the Division 2 ladder.
The last two grading games saw the Colts continue on
their winning way. First up handing St. Mary's (2) a
thrashing by 200 points thanks to Kyle Polley who had a
day out with 13 goals. Other players that stood out
were C. Balshaw, D. Hewitt, O. Park, M. Philp & B.
Eddy. A total of 12 players contributed to the 31 goals
kicked.
Drysdale was their next victim. Another stellar
performance produced a 71 point win. Best players: C.
Balshaw, M. Philp, K. Polley, D. Hewitt, T. Blair & M.
Beckwith. With successful grading games completed
the boys were rewarded with a promotion to Division 1
which is testament to the work Andrew is putting into the
boys. Congratulations and Go Colts.
Torquay at home was the first Division 1 game for the
Colts. After a slow start the boys went into the long
break with a 16 point lead. Torquay made a late charge
in the 3rd quarter pegging back the lead to just 5 points at
time. The last quarter produced their best football for
the game running away with a 30 point win. Best

players: M. Philp, B. Michell, B. Eddy, J. Johnstone,
J. Ollis & T. Croft.
Round 4 saw us up against Newcomb at home. A
massive 121 goals was kicked between the Colts,
Reserves & Seniors. The reserves had a percentage
booster kicking 45 goals, K. Johanneson 8, A.
Rodgers 7 and C. Martin 7 were the main goal scorers
with another 12 players posting majors. As you could
imagine there was a host of good players with Pete
Swinton playing his 150th leading the way.
The seniors kicking 17-9 in the final term finished the
day with 45 goals also. Out of 17 goal kickers Andy
Walsgott got the most with 10. My hat goes off to the
Newcomb players who front up each week.
Round 5 we travelled to Drysdale which hasn't been a
happy hunting ground for us in the past. The Reserves
notched up another impressive win. Great to see young
Scotty Michell amongst the best. Thanks to the
fantastic efforts of the back 6 we kept Drysdale to just 3
goals for the game. It took half a game to shake off a
persistent Drysdale. The end result was a gutsy 58
point win. The 3 from 3 wins had the supporters going
for the record books to see when we last achieved that
result at Drysdale. Congratulations to Jimmy Taylor on
playing his 100th senior game.
Round 6 the reserves playing for outright top spot on the
ladder had a great 18 point win. Leading all day we had
to work hard to fight off the previously undefeated
Torquay. There are probably 6 players that are knocking
on the door for senior selection a far cry from previous
years.
The undefeated Torquay senior side came out firing,
with relentless pressure and slick handball they jumped
to a 27 point lead at time, by time they had
increased it to a match winning 40 points. Inaccurate
kicking 7-15 didn't help our cause.

Going into the bye weekend we have a 4-2 win loss ratio
which puts us 1 game clear on third.
The reverse raffle has been run and won by Herbo &
Sue congratulations on taking out the major prize.

Seagulls feasting on island cuisine I think the heading
should have read Football Director feasting on island
cuisine. It seems he dines on King Island steak, crayfish
& cheese. No wonder Leigh is his favorite boarder. I
know for a fact that none of those delicacies have made
it into the footy club Kitchen for all to share.
The Thursday night kitchen gang continues to put in a
stellar effort, providing restaurant type meals to the
players and supporters.

NETBALL News
The netball season is well and truly underway in Barwon Heads and each Saturday,
the courts come to life with Seagulls players and supporters. From our super excited
Under 11's taking to the court in the icy morning's right through to our focused A
Grade squad in the middle of the afternoon.
Our Barwon Heads juniors have been playing some sensational netball and we are
confident some of our teams will be representing the club in finals later in the season.
Development of our junior girls continues with several girls playing in both the Under
17 and senior divisions. Maggie Leahy, Georgia Ryan, Keely Babb and Madi Finn
joining the A and B Grade squad and Jordan Koster and Molly Gray taking the
court in C and D Grade. Stepping up into seniors is not without its challenges for
these young girls but it is great to see them taking it in their stride, their confidence
growing both on and off the court each week. We also have several Under 15 players
training with the seniors to get a taste of what seniors is all about, in view of being
transitioned into those teams over the next few seasons.
Our B and D Grade girls have had an exceptional start to the season, with D Grade
undefeated after six rounds and definitely the team to watch. Our A and B squad are
settling well after some tough competition in the early rounds. Both teams are
looking stronger each week and their hard work and commitment is starting to pay
dividends with improvements across the board.
All of volunteer coaches are currently in the process of completing their
Foundation or Development Coaching accreditation.
These courses are designed to provide our coaches with additional skills to better
aid the development of our junior squads. A big thank you to each of our coaches for
taking the extra time out of their lives to participate in this further training.
The excitement has not just been confined to court this season with senior's
coach Mel and partner Shelly welcoming new son Alfie to their family.
A big congratulations to them both from everyone at the club. Continuing with the
baby news, A Grade's Perri Jones has finished up for the season in preparation for
the arrival of her baby later this year and we wish her all the best. We look forward to
seeing her back next year.
With matches beginning at 8:30 and going through until 2:30 each home game, there
is plenty of great netball to watch.
Our senior matches are a great spectacle and provide a terrific Saturday afternoon's
entertainment.

There have been mumblings around our proud club of a

big ride.
And when I say big, I mean really big. Massive.
Enormous. Gigantic. Epic.
The BHCC have done many big rides before, including
Gran Fondos, Around the Bay in a Day, cycle touring,
Cadel Evan's Great Ocean Road Ride and even Away
from the Bay and Away. But, our Scotsman has been
cooking up something for a while. He has got a lot of us
excited about riding from Sydney to Barwon Heads.
Bondi to Barwon? Or Bridge to Bridge? The famous
Sydney Harbour Bridge to the infamous Barwon Heads
Bridge. Both iconic Aussie structures spanning world
famous waters. Hence, the B2B was born.
B2B: Bridge to Bridge
We have had a few meetings already and have

between 6 and 8 riders who are very keen to participate
in this epic journey. We'll be riding over 1,000 km in a
week, aiming to arrive in our famous town of Barwon
Heads early April. The team from BHCC plan to follow
the coast with support vehicle nearby.

Barwon Heads Soccer Club

Half-time pep talk for the BHSC Juniors Under 7 Lions team under
lights at Surfside
Record numbers of Australians are

taking up football, the world game,
with an estimated 1.97 million
players participating this year.
The kids of Barwon Heads have certainly found out for
themselves how much fun football is to play...a record
number of 154 local kids have signed on for training
this year with the Barwon Heads Junior Soccer Club at
the Village Park. Many of these future football stars
also participate in MiniRoos matches against other
Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast teams each
Sunday morning, with BHSC Juniors fielding teams in
Under 7s, Under 9s, Under 11s and Under 12s
competitions, with both boys and girls involved.
Our hardworking organisers, James Ramage and
Jon Phillips, make it all possible, along with the
support and encouragement of all the parents,
sponsors and the community.
As David Gallop, CEO of the Football Federation of

Australia, points out, MiniRoos is specifically designed for
kids; it is all about having fun, learning new skills and making
life-long friends in a team environment.
The game of football is safe, simple and skillful for boys and
girls to play, and it's also inclusive, accessible and
multicultural just some of the reasons why more Australians
are signing up to play football than any other mass
participation sport.
Barwon Heads' turn to host the MiniRoos hub

matches at Village Park happened on 24 and
31 May.
