Middle classness is not really an economic category at all; it was always more social and
political. What being middle class means, first and foremost, is a feeling that the fundamental

yourself, and if you play by them correctly, you should be able to reasonably predict the

The obsession with form over content, with rules and procedures, has led to a conception of
democracy itself as a system of rules, a constitutional system, rather than a historical
movement toward popular self-rule and self-organization, driven by social movements, or
even, increasingly, an expression of popular will.
