First of all, if you experience any problem contact your energy supplier. It is important that
you put your complaint in writing if the problem is of a serious nature. Always keep copies of
all bills and correspondence and contact Consumer Direct for more advice.

We have all been shopping around for gas and electricity for nearly five years. Existing
competition between gas and electricity suppliers means that we can choose the best possible
energy prices and service. However, things can still go wrong, problems with inaccurate bills,
power cuts, and even being switched to another utility supplier without your consent, are not
uncommon.

Be aware that to sign up new customers, underhand tactics are commonly used by
some energy companies. If sale staff cannot persuade you to switch to their company, they
can even forge your signature on energy contractsthere have been several cases of forged
signature recorded in the last 5 years. If you should be a victim of high-pressure sales tactics,
you could be entitled to compensation from your energy supplier. For example, if an energy
salesperson has forged a signature on your contract, you are entitled to 250 compensation.
Next time you talk to energy salespeople, remember that there are rules they must follow.

The code of practice

The code of practice draws guidelines for energy companies and salespeople on how they must
behave when they visit your home or your company to sell gas and electricity. In the Code of
Practice this is referred to as face-to-face sales.

First of all, salespeople cannot call at your home before 9am, and after 8pm. However,
you can arrange a visit at outside these times. On arriving at your home, salespeople must say
who they are and they must show you a valid identity card. They must also leave your home if
you ask them to.

During your conversation salespeople must not use any underhand tactics in order
to exploit you as a customer; they also mustnt give you any false information. It is their
responsibility to ensure that you fully understand the contract you are about to sign, as well as
the right to cancel.
All energy sales staff must follow this Code of Practice, and can be dismissed if they breach it.
Contact your energy supplier if you believe that a sales person has broken the code of practice
making you a victim of high-pressure sales tactics.

once?
