Preface
The University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering undergraduate program, which is
under the regulatory body of Professional Engineers Ontario, is accredited by Engineers Canada (Canadian
Engineering Accreditation Board). Under the Washington Accord, which is signed by Engineers Canada, from
1965 onwards Canadian professional engineering bachelor academic degrees from the University of Toronto are
transferable between the bodies responsible for accreditation in its signatory regions and countries including both
Hong Kong (The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers HKIE) and Canada (Engineers Canada).
Being a participant in the Facultys Professional Experience Year (PEY) program at the Laboratory of Civil
Engineering Macau, and for the successful completion of the program, I am required to complete three reports over
the coming months and have them signed by my supervisor. The three reports, among which are as follows:
Item 1 - PEY Midterm Evaluation (Required by the University of Toronto) See Appendix A
Item 2 - PEY final internship Report (Required by the University of Toronto) See Appendix B
Item 3 - Pre-graduation Experience Record (Required by both the University of Toronto and the Professional
Engineers Ontario) See Appendix C
Item 4 30 minutes Individual Presentation in front of a panel of professors and all 2015-2016 PEY participants.
The one month that I have spent here at LECM has been valuable but experimental; colleagues have shown
much welcoming but also curiosities. This is an individual proposal that could possibly clear up some curiosities
and provide ideas to LECM regarding this internship; moreover it could probably direct and guide myself through
this internship smoothly with much knowledge gained and the successful completion of the PEY program.

Suggestions are based on the following items:

*Suggestions are made based on LECM Departmental basis and some of the group involves more than one
department*
*Since item 2 and Item 3 are correlated, suggestions and ideas thereafter will be based on Item 3 on Preface
page, reference to Item 3 please refer to Appendix C*
*Suggestions and ideas thereafter will be categorized in the five-quality based criteria refer to Appendix C*
*According to item 3, an acceptable engineering experience exposes the person, to a greater or lesser extent,
to five quality based criteria, references to the specifications of the Groups please refer to Appendix C:
Group A. Application of Theory
Group B. Practical Experience

Group E - Social Implications of Engineering

The center of Training and Documentation

1. Allowing appropriate access to the technical library, esp. reference books, technical reports and analytical
reports etc.
2. Allowing the intern participate in LECM held technical and scientific information presentations through
Seminars, Conferences, Congresses and Publications should such occasion arise
Group D - Communication Skills

Any appropriate departments or any department that is willing to take on an intern and allow
him/her to start implementing the following from the simplest report to the relatively more complex
one.

Acceptable communications experience should give you an opportunity to participate in the

followings:

1. Allowing the intern to prepare or participate in written work, including daily correspondence, design briefs
(meetings) and occasionally major reports. For example, some general inspection work report, daily report
are considered minor reports, major reports are analytical and technical reports such as lab report and
monthly report.
2. Allowing the intern to prepare or participate in oral reports or presentations to co-workers, supervisors,
senior management, and if possible clients and regulatory authorities
3. Making presentations to the general public should such occasion arise

Group C - Management of Engineering

Any appropriate departments or any department that is willing to take on an intern and allow
him/her to start implementing the following from the simplest to the relatively more complex.

I would believe CA - coordination and technical support fall into this category and some of the
materials herein might be confidential, sensitive and complex. If I could not work on any of the
materials, I would like to participate in or review some of the documents over, namely documents
regarding project follow up 1. Light Rail Transit Macau 2.Macau Airport. In hopes that these
documents would educate me in the following elements and in the completion of this section of the
report.

Management of engineering projects include supervising staff, managing projects, being exposed
generally to an engineering business environment, and managing technology from a societal
perspective. Acceptable engineering management experience involves:[1]

1. Planning From identifying requirements, developing concepts, evaluating alternative methods and
assessing required resources to planning for the social result of social actions.
2. Scheduling from establishing interactions and constraints, developing activity or task schedules,
allocating resources and assessing the impact of delays to determining and assessing the impact of delays
to determining and assessing projects interactions with other projects and the marketplace For example, a
Bored Piles Construction record.
3. Budgeting from developing conceptual and detailed budgets identifying labor, materials and overhead to
assessing risk of cost escalation and reviewing budgets in light of change. [1]

4. Supervision including leadership and professional conduct, organizing human resources, motivating
teams and managing technology
5. Project Control requiring understanding of the elements of a while, in order to coordinate phases of
project work, monitor expenditures and schedules and take corrective action;
6. Risk assessment - Relating to operating equipment and system performance, technological risk, product
performance, and social and environmental impacts.
Group B - Practical Experience

Aside from being a quality and regulatory institution, LECM is a civil engineering laboratory
with lots of equipments, it is a good place to learn about the numerous tests that exist in the
industry of civil engineering. The numerous tests that LECM are conducting will definitely
fulfill Group B and Group A requirement.

Any appropriate departments that are willing to take on an intern and allow him/her to start
implementing the following from the simplest test to the relatively more complex test.

Practical experiences provide applicants with an appreciation of the fundamental roles of function,
time, cost, reliability, reparability, safety and environmental impact in their work. Practical
experience should provide opportunities to experience, understand and acquire knowledge of such
element as:

1. The function of components as part of a larger system, including for example, the merits of
reliability, the role of computer software, or the relationship of the end product to the equipment and
to the equipment control systems;

222 College St, Suite 106, Toronto, Ontario | www.engineeringcareers.utoronto.ca

2. The limitations of practical engineering and related human systems in achieving desired goals,
including, for example, limitations of production methods, manufacturing tolerances, operating and
maintenance philosophies, human factors.
3. The significance of time in the engineering process, including the difficulties of work flow,
scheduling, equipment wear out, corrosion rates and replacement scheduling.
4. The importance of the codes, standards, regulations and laws that govern applicable engineering
activities. Definitely achievable
Group A - Application of Theory

As mentioned heretofore, the numerous tests that LECM are conducting will fulfill
Group A and Group B.

Intern will be responsible for reading the instruction manual of each piece of equipment s
(so that the intern would not be bothering the actual work of the staff) and hopefully the
instruction manual could be lent to the intern

Intern will be responsible for reading all the standards and codes required and
implemented by each test and hopefully these reading materials could be lent to the
intern

Intern will hopefully have opportunities in using the equipment, collecting sample and
data, and completing a lab report (and hopefully the lab report will be overseen by an
engineering technician)

Although the intern will be responsible for independent learning of the equipment and
the standard, minimal supervision from seniors might be needed

Since each department or center performs categorized tests. The intern will learn best by
placing him/her in one department or one center at a certain period of time and then he
or she could be transferred to another department or center to learn another set of
categorized tests.

I will be referring to Lista de preos de Ensaios Relatrio No: 6110 for the
departments in which the students will be participating.

The students will be participating in this order of the following centers/departments, the
following order is based on the interns academic knowledge and background:

1.

NEM Construction Material testing

2.

NIEE Center of Buildings and Structures Inspection

3.

NSP Center of Soil and Pavement

4.

NII Center of Inspection of Leakage

5.

NFP Center of Foundations and Prospecting.

6.
