IhavehadthepleasureofworkingwithLauraCartieroverthepastyear,asafacultymember
intheUniversityofAlaskaFairbankselementaryteachercertificationprogram.Laurais
completingourpostbaccalaureateelementaryteacherpreparationprogram,whichisdesigned
forindividualswhoalreadyholdabachelorsdegreeandareinterestedinenteringtheteaching
profession.Lauratookninecreditsworthofeducationcourseworkoverthesummermonths,
andthenbeganherrigorousinternshipyearinAugustof2012,workingfulltimeina2
nd
grade
classroomintheFairbanksNorthStarBoroughSchoolDistrict,andtakingafullloadof
coursesinelementaryteaching.Shewillcompleteherinternshipinthespringsemester,
includingassumingfulltimeresponsibilityforherstudentsforthreeweeksinMarch,andwill
haveherteachingcertificationbytheendofMay.Lauracompletedtwocourseswithmeduring
herinternshipyearandoneadditionalcourseduringthe2012summersession,andIhave
beenherfacultyliaisonandinternshipsupervisorthroughoutherinternshipyear.Throughmy
interactionswithLauraintheuniversityenvironment,combinedwithmultipleformaland
informalonsitevisitsandobservationsduringherinternshipattheWatershedCharterSchool,
Ihavehadanopportunitytoobservehergrowthandmasteryasanelementaryeducator.
Laurawillbringcompetenceandcreativitytoherownelementaryclassroomandwillenhance
thefacultyofanyschoolwhereshebecomesafacultymember.
Laurahasmyriadstrengthsintheclassroom.Sheisenthusiasticandprofessionalandshe
clearlyhasthetrustandrespectofthestudents.Sheiscreativeandthoughtfulinherplanning
andinthereflectionshemakesoneachlessontaught.Shehastraveledextensivelyandwill
usethatfirsthandexperienceandunderstandingofworldculturestoenhanceanyclassroom
sheworksin.HerplacementattheWatershedSchool,withitsfocusonthelocalenvironment
andplacebasedcurriculum,hasledhertodevelopmultiplelessonsandunitsthatconnect
subjectmattertothelivesofthestudentsandthecommunitytheylivein.Anemphasison
outdooractivitieshasprovidedLaurawithmultipleopportunitiestofinessehermanagement
skills,bothinsidetheclassroomandinlessstructuredoutofschoolenvironments.Laurais
committedtounderstandingherstudents,andthendevelopinginstructiontomeetthe
individualandspecificneedsofeachchild.Myconversationswithandobservationsofher
havedemonstratedastrongdesiretopursuemultiplemethodsofdeliveryofinstructionto
makesurethecontentpresentedisaccessibleto
all
students.Shemaintainsaproductiveand
positiveclassroomenvironmentthatisfullofcompassionandhighexpectations.
Laurahascreativity,commitmentandprofessionalismandwillnodoubtpositivelyimpactany
groupofstudentssheworkswith.Sheisintelligentandcommittedtoherdecisiontobecomea
teacher.Sheisabletoadapttochangingsituationsandwillbeabletodealwiththe
complexitiesanduncertaintiesassociatedwithworkinginaforeigncountry.Anyschoolwould
benefitfromherdedicationtomeetingtheindividuallearningneedsofherstudents,her
engagingapproachtocurriculumplanning,andherabilitytoconnectwithstudentsina
personalandpositivemanner.Shealsohasexcellentinterpersonalskills,whichIhaveseen
andheardaboutfromstaffandparentsatWatershed,aswellasfrommyowninteractionswith
Laurathisyear.Lauraisgoingtobeadedicatedandhardworkingteacherandwillbeanasset
