Bracing System

Application Details
With BraceLok Bracing Rods the only fabrication
required to produce a completed bracing
member is to cut the bar to length. The product
is then simply assembled on site, using the
BraceLok end components, as part of the normal
steel erection process.

Versatile and easy to use, BraceLok Bracing Rods

offer a range of standard end connection details
to suit most applications. The patented BraceLok
system, developed by SpeediBolt, is a practical and
cost-effective alternative to fabricated bracing rods
and angles.

Installation Details

Site assembly procedures

Step 1 Select a clear area to suit the full length of the bracing being
assembled. Screw on the BracekLok Fitting (with thread) at one end
of the bar.

Step 1

Position the end of the bar in the middle of the fittings adjustment
window to allow adjustment of overall bracing length in both
directions.
Threaded End BraceLok Fitting (with thread)

Step 2 Slide the BraceLok Fitting without thread onto the other end
of the bar. Position the end of the bar in the middle of the window of
the fitting.

Step 2

Step 3 Place the BraceLok Holding Collar inside the window of the
BraceLok Fitting, align the two flat surfaces inside the collar with the
flat sides on the bar, and slide the collar onto the bar.
Step 4 Place the BraceLok Locking Nut inside the window of the
BraceLok Fitting without thread and screw it onto the bar.

Plain End BraceLok Fitting (with out thread)

Step 3

Step 5 Align the tabs on the BraceLok Holding Collar with the slots
in the BraceLok Locking Nut and engage the two components.
Step 6 Lift the assembled bracing unit, and bolt into place.

Step 1

Step 7 Adjust the assembly by turning the bar with a shifting

spanner gripping the flat surfaces of the bar to reduce the sag in the
overall bracing to less than A/100 as shown below.

BraceLok Holding Collar

Step 4

A
A/100

Notes
1. Ensure any burrs are removed when the bar is cut to allow the bar
to run freely through the threaded components.

BraceLok Locking Nut

Step 5

2. If a coupler is used to join the bar, ensure the bar is always turned
clockwise into the coupler during both assembly and adjustment of
the bracing unit to length.
3. The overall length of the bracing unit can be adjusted by altering
the position of the holding collar and locking nut on the bar. Always
ensure however that the bar protrudes beyond the locking nut and
threaded end of the BraceLok Fitting.

Assembled bracing unit

4. BraceLok should not be over tensioned. One person with a 200mm

to 300mm shifting spanner (depending on the size of 500PLUS
REIDBAR used) should achieve tensioning to the correct amount
of sag.

(See Figure C).
Step 8 Fix the remaining fasteners, a further two
each side of the column on each saddle.
Step 9 Tension up the bracing with a shifting
spanner, ensuring both columns are vertical or in the
desired position to complete the installation.

Standardised Foundation Bolt Kits

Over the last few years, SpeediBolt and the Australian Institute of
Steel Construction, now the Australian Steel Institute [ASI], in a joint
initiative, have worked to establish the standardisation of building
column base plates and holding-down bolt configurations for the
Australian market.
In the past, structural designers did not have the opportunity to select
base plates and holding-down bolt configurations conforming to
recognised standard patterns that suited a major proportion of the
range of the steel sections used for columns in Australia. Traditionally,
these items have been custom made to suit each project.
The SpeediBolt FootiPak range of products allows the designer to
select pre-engineered, off-the-shelf kits of foundation bolts, complete
with prefabricated cages and base plate templates to suit 150UB to
610UB, 700WB, 100UC to 310UC, 76CHS to 165CHS, 89x89 SHS to
150x150SHS, and 102x76RHS to 200x150RHS sections.
This rationalised range of FootiPak kits, available as stock items,
provides a practical and economical alternative to custom made
product for a majority of column base applications.

1. Bolts have formed threads.

2. Bolt projections allow for nominal 50mm grouting or mortar bedding under base plate, or nominal 75mm concrete bedding
under base plate.
3. Edge distances are recommended to allow holding-down bolts to develop full capacity in 25 MPa normal-class concrete.
4. Design load capacities have been determined to AS 4100 Steel Structures.
5. The cog lengths have been confirmed by detailed testing. The anchorage capacity has been shown to exceed the ultimate design
capacities of Grade 4.6 holding-down bolts.
6. The FootiPak range of products is subject to change without notice.

Foundation anchoring bolt embedment lengths and
minimum edge distances have been determined
using the design model given for unreinforced
concrete so as to exceed the ultimate design
capacities of Grade 4.6 foundation anchoring bolts.
For embedment lengths or edge distances less than
these values, fully developed reinforcement must be
provided to intercept potential cracking planes.

Combined Actions

1) Design Load Capacities are applicable for pinned type base plates only where any induced bending moments are neglected
2) Ends of columns are assumed to be cold sawn so that axial compression is transmitted by bearing.
3) Base plate holes are 4 mm oversize as this has been shown to be most practical for typical installation and erection requirements.
2 washers may be used under anchoring nuts to satisfy the requirements of AS 4100 CI. 14.3.5.2.
4) Shear forces resisted by holding-down bolts have been limited to half the design load capacity of the bolts and linear interaction has
been assumed for combined tension and shear loads. This conservative approach reflects the lack of a clear consensus in current
research on shear in holding-down bolts.
5) Larger shear forces may be resisted by suitable shear keys, or recessing the base plate into the footing.
6) The design model is based on the model detailed in A.I.S.C. Design of Stuctural Connections Section 4.II - Column Base Plate Pinned Type Connection.
7) Design load capacities on column sections are based on the capacity of the web section only as the base plates are not detailed to
extend to the outer extremities of the flanges in both directions. This conservative approach is used throughout the design model
and yields design load capacities which exceed normal design requirements.
8) The yield line method of analysis given in the design model has been used exclusively for calculation of base plate tension capacities.

Deformable Brackets

Commonly called Fire Ties

SpeediBolt TiltLok Deformable Brackets provide
restraints for tilt-up and precast concrete panels.

Features

These life-safety devices allow designers of buildings

clad with tilt-up or precast concrete panels to specify
components that meet the needs of the Building
Code of Australia. The TiltLok brackets can be used to
secure panels to the structure, or to adjacent corner
panels, so that in the event of a fire, the likelihood of
outward collapse of the panels is minimised.

Prefabricated standard components

Made from 100 x 10 Grade 250 flat bar
Economical, off-the-shelf components
Available in black, or galvanised
Simple to use
Slotted holes aid alignment
Feature podger holes to assist in installation

Design requirements and

limitations

Deformable Brackets

TiltLok Deformable Brackets are required to restrain cladding

panels for the duration of a fire.

Performance Criteria

TiltLok Deformable Brackets are designed to allow tilt-up or

precast concrete panels to hog during a fire, yet prevent the
panel from being displaced from a building during the fire.

TiltLok Deformable Brackets have been designed

and tested to meet the performance criteria of
Specification C1.11 of the Building Code of Australia,
and the BHP Structural Steel Development Group
Technical Note Single Storey Steel-framed Buildings
- Support of External Walls in Fire, Revised February
1997.

Vertical panel height should not exceed 9.0 m.

Support column spacing should not exceed 10.0 m.
Vertical panels must be each connected to the supporting
columns, or designed such that intermediate non-attached
panels are all connected, and served by TiltLok brackets.
TiltLok brackets must be located less than 2.0 m from the top
of the panel.

Testing carried out by the Structures Laboratory of the

University of Queensland has shown ultimate capacity
on a pair of TiltLok brackets exceeds 164 kN, limited
by Grade 8.8 fastener failure. Deformation at that load
was 550 mm.

Panels must be fitted with appropriate cast-in ferrules sized

to suit loads. Brackets to be fastened to panels with M20 Grade
8.8 bolts.
Standard brackets to be connected to column web with a pair
of M20 Grade 8.8 bolts.
The smallest column section that can be used with TiltLok
brackets is UB250.
The Technical Note cited above suggests that for structures
having columns with a bending capacity
oMs <50 kN.m, deformable brackets need not to be used to
connect panels to the columns.
The Technical Note also suggests that the temperature of the
bolts in the cast-in ferrules remains relatively low due to the
concrete wall panel acting as a heat sink.
In applications where post-installed masonry anchors
are to be used with TiltLok brackets, the capacity of the
anchors should be reduced substantially to allow for elevated
temperature effects.
The use of chemical anchors is not recommended due to
elevated temperature effects.

Engineering Notes
Equivalent Bracing Rods or Sections
As a design aid, tables have been included in this
brochure for the SpeediBolt BraceLok and DBracket
BraceLok products, to help designers substitute
SpeediBolt bracing systems for commonly used
bracing rod materials. The sizes of the equivalent
bracing rods shown in the substitution tables have
been determined from the requirements of the
AS 4100 Steel; Structures Standard, for threaded rods

with cut threads of either Grade 4.6 steel [with 240 MPa
yield strength, 400 MPa tensile strength] or Grade 300
steel [with 300 Mpa yield strength, 440 MPa tensile
strength].
It may be appropriate to substitute BraceLok or
DBracket BraceLok bracing systems for other
structural sections used for bracing. The following
chart provides additional information that can be
used by designers to compare the capacities of the
SpeediBolt bracing products with other commonly
used bracing sections.
