Latheral thinking

Story
Searcing for homework materials, I found an interesting story about efficiency of latheral
thinking , in situations which can't be solved with logical way of thinking.
The story is taken from Edvard de Bono's book, and i will try to translate it.
Once upon a time there was a men who owed money to an old greeady man. A man had a
beatiful young daughter and old man liked her, and wanted to trick them to get her.
He set a task: he will put white and black stone into an empty money bag, and a doughter will
draw stones out.
If she chooses black one, she will have to go with him. If she pick white one, her father won't
have to return the money. There wasnt a possibility for her to refuse the offer. The old man
took stones from the track - two black stones, and girl saw it.
What will she do? If she would think on logical way, the possibilities would be:
1.To refuse to pick from the money bag, then her father will go to prison
2.To tell she saw what the old man did - he might accuse her for lying
3.To take a black stone and marry the old man - she will sacrifice herself to save her father
In either way - she loses.
The vertical way of thinking-logical way is occupied with fact that she has to take stone from
a bag.
A lateral way of thinking is preoccupied with stone left in a money bag.
Girl took stone from a bag and accidently throw it to the track.
In that way she thrick the old man, because if in the bag was black stone, she surely picked
up white one.
The old man couldn't say anithing, in order to conceal a froad.
A girl saved her father using latheral thinking.

When you hear the answer, the solution seems to me easy, but it takes another way of
thinking-lateral thinking to create that kind of solution.

In order to think latheral, we have to change the perspective on the problem.
According to Edvard de Bono, latheral thinking distances itself from standard perceptions of
creativity, like solving the problem step by step from the given datas (called vertical logic), or
having many ideas but not vory about detailed implementation of them.
Edvard de Bono defines 4 types of thinking tools:
1.idea generating tools-which helps to break pattern way of thinking-routine
2.focus tools to expand area for searching new ideas
4.harvest tools ensure more value received from idea generating output
5.treatment tools promote consideration of real-world constraints, resources and support
Thinker can choose object at random, or a noun from a dictionary, and associates i with the
area he/she is thinking about-this is called Random Entry Idea Generating Tool
Provocation Idea Generating Tool: the thinker creates a list of provocations and uses the
strangest one to help thinking forward to new ideas.
Movement Techniques uses when thinker develops provocation operation by extract a
principle, focus on the difference, positive aspects, special circumstances
Challenge Idea Generating Tool: A tool which is designed to ask the question "Why?" in a
non-threatening way: why something exists, why it is done the way it is. The goal is to be
able to challenge anything at all, not just items which are problems.
Concept fan idea generating tool: systematically expands the range and number of concepts in
order to end up with a a wide variety of ideas to consider
Disproving: Based on the idea that the majority is always wrong. This technique is similar to
de Bono's "Black Hat" of Six thinking hats, which looks at the ways something wont work.
