June 20, 1776---James Mason deposition by John Jay committee. Mason AKA Masone is a young recruit
into the 1776 Mathews Conspiracy Summer Plot who sees much and seems to blab all. He ties in Thomas
Hickey to the plot as well as implicates a brother of David Mathews. Mason also implicates John Clark
AKA Clarke a close neighbor to Fletcher Mathews and close associate of Absalom Bull, Thomas Bulls
son. William Forbes, like John Clark is also a neighbor of Thomas Bull in the Campbell Hall area. It is
suggested near this area many men have been recruited to side with the king. The old looking brother of
the mayor described but not named is Fletcher Mathews. It appears Fletcher is using William Forbes to
relay information to his brother David. http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?

June 22, 1776---James Haff implicates Bull neighbor and compatriot John Clark AKA John Clarke AKA
Jonathan Clarke, details plot to disable cannon in the Hudson Highlands of Orange County:
http://amarch.lib.niu.edu/islandora/object/niu-amarch%3A94674

June 23, 1776---Deposition of William Forbes of Goshen by John Jay committee. Forbes provides
damning testimony that John Clarke (close associate and neighbor of Absalom Bull) and his brother
Anthony Clarke are leaders in a conspiracy to recruit men for the king from Orange County (Clarks may
be related to Bull family through Thomas Bulls paternal grandmother, a Clark):

June 24, 1776---John Yates deposition by John Jay committee . Describes Absalom Bull, son of Thomas,
(and Richard Bull, brother of Thomas) as a high ranking member within Mathews Conspiracy with direct
access to Gov. Tryon and Tryons secretary Edmund Fanning. Implicates a multitude of Thomas Bulls
neighbors from the Campbell Hall area. Also links group to Julius Smith, brother of Claudius Smith:
http://amarch.lib.niu.edu/islandora/object/niu-amarch%3A81348
(Here is an account of Edmund Fanning described in the above link as close compatriot of Absalom Bull.
Fanning lodged loyalist attacks on the Hudson Valley)

June 27, 1776---James Clinton takes the liberty to correct mistake George Washington made in
ordering Fletcher Mathews arrested and sends Fletcher home rather than to Jays committee in NYC. (The
footnote explains that brother to David Mathews sought was changed to James Mathews from Fletcher
Mathews, but Fletcher Mathews is truly infirm and old as Mason described while younger brother James
Mathews is a 42 year old soldier in the Continental army---James is soon released in NYC after he swears
allegiance to America. James Mathews appears to have been a solid American patriot.):

July 1, 1776 a day or two after Thomas Hickey is hanged, George Washington moves on and lets Fletcher
Mathews off the hook. The British invasion is imminent and Washington is desperate to see James
Clinton, who fought with Fletcher Mathews and the Bulls in the French and Indian War, complete the
Hudson River defenses: http://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/03-05-02-0097

July 8, 1776 David Mathews is convicted and sentenced to death for role in 1776 plot in which Hickey
Plot was one part. On Aug. 1, 1776 his execution was postponed and he was jailed in Connecticut. He
later escaped and returned to NYC where he resumed Mayoral duties under British control (and where he
sponsored guerilla warfare groups for the rest of the war): http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?

August 21, 1776--- Mayor David Mathews transferred to jail in Harford CT, where hes permitted to walk
around town by day. William Forbes remains in Litchfield CT jail. Other 1776 Mathews Conspiracy
Summer Plot figures associated with Goshen NY area, John Clark and James Mason jailed in New
London CT:

September 2, 1776---Abigail Adams complains about David Mathews apparent impunity, as he escapes
Connecticut to return to power in NYC: http://www.masshist.org/publications/apde2/view?id=ADMS-0402-02-0074

November 1776--- this documents New York Tory Thomas Bullis being sent to jail in New Hampshire
for involvement in the Summer plot to disarm Americans. This is the same panel headed by John Jay
which had to relocate to Fishkill from NYC as a result of the British invasion of New York, which
disrupted the panel. This fits circumstances of Thomas Bull and I believe is just a misspelling of his name
(misspellings are extremely common in these records): http://amarch.lib.niu.edu/islandora/object/niuamarch%3A82444

December 1776---one month after Thomas Bullis is sent to New Hampshire, Thomas Bulls brother
Richard and Campbell Hall neighbor James Corshader AKA James Cascadden are picked up on a
warrant and jailed for their involvement in the summer plot AKA Mathews Conspiracy

who make spinning wheels: http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?

January 1779---Claudius Smith, associate of Fletcher Mathews and the Thomas Bull family, is hanged in
Goshen. Fletcher Mathews is described as a follower of Claudius Smith. May have been the other way
around. Claudius Smith bio: http://www.monroehistoryny.org/#!the-legend-of-claudius-smith--/c15hi

March 23, 1779 Confession of William Cole, member of Claudius Smiths gang. He implicates Thomas
Bulls son George as being in the gang and committing robbery. He also describes David Mathews paying
bounties to the gang to sponsor the gangs marauding activities: https://books.google.com/books?

Coles confession is also found in Ruttenbers history, but unlike New Jersey historian Leiby, Ruttenber
doesnt stress David Mathews sponsorship of Smith Gang activities at all. I find as a general rule Orange
County historians steer around the Mathews family story (see page 73):

1791--- Absalom Bull dies in Savannah Georgia. (John Clarke of 1776 Mathews Conspiracy/Summer
plot appears also to have relocated to Savannah. They may have fled at first to Florida and moved north.)
Absalom frees a slave in his will to be sent to his father in New York as a servant. See Georgia section
under William Gale: http://gale-gaylefamilies.com/strays-in-america-part-ii.html

1838---secret compartment for hiding Tories is discovered in Fletcher Mathews house by later owner
Gilbert Gerow as documented by George Pierson who grew up on a neighboring farm to the Mathews
farm and was married to a Fletcher Mathews descendant. See page 69: https://books.google.com/books?

1846---Samuel Eager, Thomas Bulls nephew and neighbor to Thomas Bull homestead, publishes History
of Orange County, the first work of its kind. Eager does not document historic involvement of Thomas
Bull family in 1776 Mathews Conspiracy Summer Plot nor any other loyalist activities leading to
incarceration, nor does he document Fletcher Mathews activities and his significance as the brother of
David Mathews who was implicated in 1776 and other plots. https://books.google.com/books?

1904--- Independent Republican newspaper of Goshen, NY publishes account of Thomas Bull being
jailed as a loyalist in Goshen during the Revolutionary War. This news likely came as a consequence of
George Clintons papers being recently published (see page 12 marked in book under Thomas Bull
section): http://longislandgenealogy.com/SmithBull.pdf

1907--- Independent Republican newspaper publishes 1906 memoir of George Pierson, who grew up on a
neighboring farm to that of Fletcher Mathews and married a Mathews descendant. Pierson describes
Claudius Smith being hidden in the Fletcher Mathews house during the Revolutionary War (although
Fletcher Mathews is not identified by name) and also describes Gilbert Gerow discovering in the home in
1838 a secret compartment when renovations are done. George Pierson was a boy living next door when
discovery was made by Gerow. See page 69: https://books.google.com/books?

1908Russel Headley selects Margaret Crawford Jackson, a Thomas Bull descendant and occupant of
Hill Hold (house Thomas Bull built), to write the Town of Hamptonburgh chapter for his Orange County
history book. She mentions nothing of the historic activities her family and the Fletcher Mathews family
participated in, in Hamptonburgh as loyalists during the Revolutionary War.
http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=loc.ark:/13960/t9280ph71;view=1up;seq=350

1927--- Descendant of Absalom Bull living outside Orange County acknowledges ancestor Thomas Bull
was jailed during the Revolutionary War for loyalist activities, but does not know or does not
acknowledge Absalom Bull was high-ranking figure in 1776 Mathews Conspiracy Summer Plot. (see
page 12 marked in book): http://longislandgenealogy.com/SmithBull.pdf

1954--- Dwight Akers publishes High Crimes of Col. Mathews: A Chapter in the History of Goshen,
which questions why Orange County historians have failed to recognize Vincent Mathews heroic role in
the landmark Zenger trial, which established the legal precedent of freedom of the press in America.
Akers acknowledges that Vincent Mathews was suspected of being a Tory during the Revolution and that
he was the father of tory NYC mayor David Mathews. Akers also acknowledges that another of Vincents
sons (Fletcher, whom he leaves unnamed) was suspected of harboring British spies on his property (In
Hamptonburgh near Thomas Bull) during the Revolutionary War. As of 2015 no library in Orange County
retains this book and only 3 copies in the world survive in libraries: https://www.worldcat.org/title/highcrimes-of-colonel-mathews-a-chapter-in-the-history-of-goshen/oclc/39455600&referer=brief_results

intention was to give entirety of park Thomas Bulls name: https://news.google.com/newspapers?

"Future Chief Justice John Jay's first venture into the counterintelligence arena occurred in the summer of
1776. Jay, a member of the New York legislature, chaired a legislative committee that was investigating a
Tory plot to recruit people to sabotage defense and infrastructure targets in New York City and its
environs. The Tory goal was to pave the way for British occupation. The conspiracy was well organized
and amply financed. It was directed by the British Royal Governor of New York, William Tryon, and New
York City's Mayor, David Matthews."
