2.1

Derivatives of A Function

Definition 2.1: Let a function f be defined in an open interval (a, b) . For x (a, b) , the
derivative of f at x is
f ( x h) f ( x )
f ( x) lim
h 0
h
if the limit exists and f is differentiable.

Method:
Using definition to find the derivative of the function f (x) , we need to the
follow:
Step 1:
Find f ( x h)
f ( x h) f ( x )
Step 2:
Find and simply
h
f ( x h) f ( x )
Step 3:
Solve lim
h 0
h
Step 4:
Make a conclusion:
f ( x h) f ( x )
(a) If the limit exist, f ( x) lim
;
h 0
h
(b) If the limit does not exist, then function f (x) is not
differentiable.

Chain Rule

If the function is a composite function ( f g )( x) f g ( x) , then we can use chain rule to find
the derivative of the composite function.
Theorem 2.1 (Chain Rule): If f (u ) is differentiable at the point u g (x) and g (x) is
differentiable at x , then the composite function ( f g )( x) f g ( x) is differentiable at x and
( f g )' ( x) f ' g ( x) g ' ( x) .
In other word, if y f (u) and u g (x) , then
dy dy du

Higher Order Derivative

Definition 2.2: If function f (x) is a differentiable function, then its derivative f ' ( x) is also a
function. If f ' ( x) is also differentiable, then we can differentiate f ' ( x) to get new function of
x denoted by f ' ' ( x) . The function f ' ' ( x) is called the second derivative of f (x) .

Definition 2.3: The function f (x) derivative 3 times becomes third derivative, denoted by

Definition 2.4: The function f (x) derivative n times becomes n -th derivative, denoted by
f ( n ) ( x) .
Example 2.8: Find the first four derivative of the function f ( x) 3x 3 4 x 2 6 x 2 .

Critical Point

Definition 2.5: Let f is a function defined in an open interval (a, b) and c (a, b) , then

Figure 2.1: Critical Point

Method:
To find the critical point and critical point value of the function f (x) , we need to
the follow:
Step 1:
Find f ' ( x)
Step 2:
Let f ' ( x) 0 , find the value of x c
Step 3:
Replace x c into f (x)
Conclusion: Critical point is (c, f (c)) .

Example 2.10: Find the critical point and critical point value of the following functions:
a) f ( x) 3x 4
Solution:
Step 1:

Conclusion: Because of f ' ( x) 0 for all x , thus that is no critical point for
f ( x) 3 x 4 .

b) f ( x) 3x 4
Solution:
Step 1:

Step 2:
If f ' ( x) 0 , then 6 x 0 x 0 .
Step 3:

Extreme Relative

Proposition 2.5: By second derivative of the function, the extreme relative of the function can
be conclude as follow:
a) if f ' (c) 0 and f ' ' (c) 0 , then f (x) has a maximum point at x c ;
b) if f ' (c) 0 and f ' ' (c) 0 , then f (x) has a minimum point at x c ;
c) if f ' (c) 0 and f ' ' (c) 0 , then f (x) do not have maximum or minimum point at x c
Method:
To find the extreme relative of the function, we need to the follow:
Step 1:
Find f ' ( x) and f ' ' ( x)
Step 2:
Find all possible value of x for f ' ( x) 0 , let say c
Step 3:
Find f (c) and f ' ' (c)
Conclusion: if f ' ' (c) 0 , then (c, f (c)) is maximum point;
if f ' ' (c) 0 , then (c, f (c)) is minimum point;
if f ' ' (c) 0 , then f (x) do not have maximum or minimum
point at x c
Example 2.11: Find the extreme relative of the following function.
a) f ( x) x3 3x 2 3x 1 .
Solution:
Step 1:
f ' ( x) 3x 2 6 x 3 and f ' ' ( x) 6 x 6 .
Step 2:
If f ' ( x) 0 , then 3x 2 6 x 3 0 3( x 1) 2 0 . Thus, x 1 .
Step 3:
When x 1, then f ' ' (1) 6(1) 6 0 .
Conclusion: There is no maximum or minimum point at x 1 .
b) f ( x) x 4 2 x 2 2
Solution:
Step 1:
f ' ( x) 4 x3 4 x and f ' ' ( x) 12 x 2 4 .
Step 2:
If f ' ( x) 0 , then 4 x3 4 x 0 4 x( x 2 1) 0 4 x( x 1)( x 1) 0 .
Thus, x 1, x 1 and x 0 .
